      @@p344y I disagree but then I am a dachshund owner and I am sure everyone else who owns a different breed would say the same about their dogs. All of those chosen as best in breed and best in group have the same level of confidence in the ring as a peke or they would not be chosen and they are all super cute and probably just as affectionate. Because of the usual outcome I seldom watch the show beyond best in breed and best in group for a variety of breeds especially the working dogs and the herding dogs. I have nothing against pekes or any dog. I am just pointing out the frequency of certain breeds winning gives me pause.

      Maybe, but I love the Pekingese. My family had a Lhasa Apso/Pekingese mix. She was a sweetheart. Loved stuffed animals and would cry if she saw one out of her reach until we gave her it. Loved food too, though we didn’t over feed her.
      I guess I protest a little that she was a cat. Lol.
      I prefer Pekingese more than a cat, sorry. But, yes, they’re not as needy as most dogs.

      Ha! They do act like cats sometimes! They are very aloof. Training is sometimes difficult if they see no reason to do something.. You must convince them. They act like dogs too because they are protective. Everyone has a Peke story about a grandma's Peke biting someone. Any dog that is not trained in acceptable behavior can bite. My Peke does agility and obedience work. That is not a cat's behavior, but stubbornness is.

      I imagine the BIS judge has many, many years experience judging ALL Groups so she knew the standards. Sometimes we can't see or feel what she has seen or felt. They could have ALL had perfect standards but she had to pick one. Perfect Pekes are rare since the breed doesn't have that many breeders anymore. True Peke breeders anyway. There are plenty of back yard/puppy mill breeders out there creating Pekes that do not follow the Peke standards.

    My family had a Lhasa Apso/Pekingese mix who looked mostly like a Pekingese. I can see the mannerisms in Wasabi to our Sophie dog. We never had a small dog before but we got a little Lhasa Apso/Poodle mix and then the Pekingese mix. No question, the Pekingese is my favorite out of the two. Sophie wasn’t needy and she loved toys and food. She could be on her own but she was loving too and got jealous of the poodle who always was needy. I loved Sophie so much. I liked how she was a little grumpy but also a sweetheart and just a simple dog. She wasn’t yappy, never bit anyone, just a chill great dog.
    Sorry but poodles from what I’ve seen they’re smart but so anxious or neurotic. I don’t know how to explain it but poodles have this anxious energy and are kind of difficult to deal with because of that. Whereas the Pekingese is calm and regal.
    Both are deceased now for several years. They both lived a nice long happy life.
    I’m thinking about getting a Pekingese now that I’m an adult and living on my own. But, the only downside is I might have kids and I know that small dogs are best with grown kids and not toddlers.
    But I love this breed.

    the problem with this dog show is that the same breeds win over and over again. If you look at the list of winners over the last 114 years the frequency of wins by certain breeds cannot be missed such as the fox terrier winning 47 times. In fact a total of 60 terriers have won best in show including the fox terrier since 1907 [ > that 50% of the total winners] It is rare that a new breed is ever best in show. IMO there is no way out of 2500 dogs showing that these same breeds come up as best in show so many times as a reasonable expectation. IMO those that enter other breeds really have no expectation of being best in show but if they do well in their breed and their group it raises their value for breeding.

      Well, they had an OES and a Whippet up there they could have chosen but, they didn't. I am bored with dogs like this peke winning. Beagles, Pekes, Bichon....seems they favor small dogs.

      There are more terriers bred, the chances of getting a good one are better, then for a Frenchie. Up to judge to decide which comes closest to written standard.... but being sequestered, judge knows the lineup, know who top dogs are, have a dinner & discuss the dogs. Most ppl. just want to show off their dog in breed competion, & advertise their kennel, & winning breed is a great accomplishments.

    • @coveyssteve
      @coveyssteve 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wrong. During the past 10 years, a Standard Poodle, German Shepherd, a Scottish Deerhound and a Shorthair have won. Sussex spaniel also in 2009 and a Bull Terrier in 2006. Most of the Fox Terrier dominance was long ago.

    • @interestedobserver-gk3ih
      @interestedobserver-gk3ih 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@coveyssteve It doesn't change the fact that there is a statistical probability that certain breeds will win and certain breeds will never win. Not all terriers who have won are in the terrier group and the number of terriers who have won over the last 114 years is impressive and the largest statistical anomaly I have yet to see. If I owned a champion Kuvase I wouldn't waste my time entering him/her in this show because I would stand better odds winning the lottery statistically speaking. On the other hand if I had peke, a poodle, or a terrier the odds would be more favorable. I am not making any accusations merely addressing statistical probability based on past performance.

    How can anyone hate on the Pekingese? They are a very distinctive, yes proud, breed. I won't call it conceit, but they certainly are aware of how beautiful they are. Probably from hearing it seven times a day from complete strangers. You don't train a Peke, you come to a mutual agreement. That is why they consistently place in the top four slots at dog shows.

      @pattiyohe4196 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said! They are smart enough to decide if they want to do something or not. It has to be their idea. Using force to make a Pekingese walk while leash training and you will be holding an empty collar and leash. Wasabi has loved the spotlight from the beginning and it showed. Really good Pekes like Wasabi are rare though.

    • @pattiyohe4196
      @pattiyohe4196 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andreil1313 you are wrong. Great breeders have stopped the problems, but puppy mills and back yard breeders keep breeding dogs with health problems. People buy a dog based on how cheap the price is so you get what you pay for...a cheap dog with lots of future vet bills. Avoid "RARE" dogs like albinos or lavender eyed or "designer mixed breeds" because they have many defects and health problems. I have owned Pekingese for 46 years and they have always had a lot of hair. Most people trim it, but professional handlers do not. They keep it clean and wrap the hair so that it grows very long. If it is wrapped, the hair doesn't get chewed on by other dogs, so it grows longer.

    • @andreil1313

      @@pattiyohe4196 you’re delusional if you think that show dogs are free of health problems. Delusional. The Pekingese looked nothing like this dog just 80 years ago, it was very similar to the Tibetan Spaniel.
      Just the fact that the breed became brachycephalic is a huge red flag. Just for that people shouldn’t support it.
      And this is not even considering the obnoxious amount of fur and the bowed front legs. BOWED FRONT LEGS. But sure it’s cute who cares of the dog.

    • @pattiyohe4196

      @@andreil1313 Many show dogs come from unethical breeders. Some breeders raise and sell puppies just to support their show dog hobby or to make money. The government treats dogs and cats like cattle. Too easy to breed dogs. Such a shame. BUT....there are MANY ethical Peke breeders who ARE trying to keep the breed healthy. That spaniel COMES from the Pekingese breed so of course they look like them. The Pekingese breed created a lot of different toy breeds just like the oldest dog breeds from Africa created most large dog breeds. So, I am not delusional, but you evidently believe you have to be rude and insulting to try to make your point. If you would like to discuss the various breed standards as FACTS not your OPINIONS, we can do that. I agree with you that some breeders are breeding bad dogs, but most peke breeders do not do that. A little less bracephalic and without the bowed front legs and it would be great :D from what I understand most pekes have a little longer face and more normal body and look more like the tibetan spaniel. A dog should be healthy and functional no matter what it is. As far as hair I have to say I find it lovely and in a very cold climate it wouldn't hurt to have it. Where they come from in northern China the people wear the padded clothing filled with goose down and they were little companions to keep your hands, feet or lap warm while sitting relatively still doing paperwork, needlework, etc.for long periods of time, etc. They also were guard dogs so you could nap and not get snuck up on by an assassin ninja etc. Tiny pekes could be carried in a wide sleeve and were known as "sleeve Pekinese" would bark to alert of someone the owner might not be aware was there. In a palace full of intrigue and competition your little peke(s) were loyal friends, kept you safe, and brought joy to your life.
