When recently, I became aware of Mid/Side... I knew where to look for clear definition and direction...this is the most comprehensive and smart approach I've seen in over literally hundreds of hours of tutorials..thank you.
thanks a lot! just got rid of all my cracked plugins, felt pretty bad for a while now using them without paying... so i was searching for this solution for a long time! great video
there are many vids on mid sides, but I understand yours better than the rest..:) Thank You..will check out your website, n purchase your course at some point.:)
I like your videos because unlike other music production tutorials, you can actually hear very clearly the difference in everything you do. Keep up the good work ...... I’m sure I speak for the masses when I say that I definitely learned a few new tricks watching your tutorials.
I literally have no words.... I mean how you know which frequencies to pull out of the real ears/skill thing here. But this is a phenomenal technique, punchily & beautifully demonstrated. SUBSCRIBED!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
AMAZING TUTORIAL. I'm used to work with mid-side EQ, but on Ableton Live, so I had no idea how it'd work on Logic. Well, you just nailed it. Thanks, man. Just subscribed.
After a day of reading theory about this topic, I discover this absolutely awesome tutorial that succinctly explains and demonstrates the practice with dramatically awesome results with the tools already available in Logic. Thank you, sir. I feel so much better now, hahaha. Brilliant job. : )
OMG THANK YOU! I just started using Logic from Studio One. I noticed my SSLEQ plug-in was different in Logic....giving me the Mid, Side, Stereo options that were no in Studio One. I've looked all over for an explanation how to use. WOW!
I'm pretty sure you do know this already, but I'll post it anyway, as I haven't seen it in this video and I'm quite surprised. Did you know you can basically use ANY plugin in Mid/Side type of processing without the need of the plugin having it as an option? When inserting your Audio Unit, pick Dual Mono instead of Stereo. Then at the top bar you've got buttons to switch instances of plugins for Left and Right channels (as they are processed separately now). Clicking the cog wheel opens up the options, which allow you to switch L/R type of processing to Mid/Side if you so desire, and this works for most plugins. Of course separate L/R is useful too, for bus compressing the drums for example.
Actually the other downside of a linear phase eq has is if the frequency curve cut becomes too steep with a deep notch, Linear phase eq introduces a problem of comb filtering adding a second version of the signal in return l as if it had a slap-back delay. It's usually good for adjustments such in mastering scenario where you don't generally make carve an eq very deeply. But in a mixing process where you might want to play with timbre using steep eq on your composition, you might meet these problems
lol same as obvi-US. why is this topic almost never mentioned? everyone talks about gain staging, eq, compression, saturation, but no one ever talks about mid/side processing. mind blown!
Thank you so much for your channel. Do you think there is any chance Logic XI will be developed in the near future? Logic X has had a good 6 year run now, and there was only a 3 year gap between 9 and X.
I don't know. But if you really think about it, Logic 10 has changed a lot since the initial release. 10.0-10.2 are a completely different beast than 10.3 and higher. Apple has this trend with Final Cut X too -- the first release of Final Cut X was 2011. They've just been updating it in smaller increments. Obviously the same could be said for Mac OSX. If you compare Logic 10.0 through 10.4 updates to, say, Pro Tools ver. 9, 10, 11, 12, 2018, and now PT2019 -- Pro Tools has barely changed since ver 9. Logic has had some drastic changes since ver 10.0. If I had to put money on it, I'd say Apple will continue to update Logic incrementally until there is a major fundamental change in their hardware. I've been hearing rumors that Apple will be developing their own CPUs for Macs in the future (they already do for their iOS devices). So in the future, they may be the tipping point where they finally release MacOS11, Logic 11, etc. Right now, I'm happy with the way Logic 10.4 works, I'm really happy with the updates so far. 10.0-10.1, had some pretty major glitches that had to be worked out. Now if they could just fix Flex Pitch......
Thanks for the helpfull vid! When listening mono, you loose al the sparkle added to the sides though, so listening mono gives a totally other EQ image of the sound source compared to listening to it in stereo. So there's not only a difference between wide and tight, but also between bright and darker. Do you usually compensate for that in the MID channel?
I appreciate this video was uploaded a few years ago and I may not get a response to this but Instead of loading up two Individual eq plug ins. Could you not just load it up in dual mono mode and utilise the mid/side functions that way?
Yes, that is my preferred way to do it now. I think that when I put out this video, the Dual Mono > Mid-Side option was not available yet. I could be wrong, but I believe that's why I demonstrated it this way for this video. Now, you can just load up any plugin in dual mono, and switch over to MS processing, including third party plugins, which is really nice.
In one of the recent updates, pretty much any plug-in in Logic can be Mid Side. Including third party plug-ins. Load any plug-in in Dual Mono, and you'll see a gear icon that you can select, and you can apply processing to just the L or R, or switch it to MS.
When recently, I became aware of Mid/Side... I knew where to look for clear definition and direction...this is the most comprehensive and smart approach I've seen in over literally hundreds of hours of tutorials..thank you.
Thank you for addressing the differences between the channel and Linear phase EQs. The track was awesome too! Sounds like a happy Anathema.
Awesome channel!
This video is a gem for any and all producers. Straight to the point, with real life example where we can actually hear the difference.
Brilliant. So simple yet such drastic results. Thanks Josh
EQing is such an important tool in mixing and mastering and thank you for the video was so helpful
I can't describe enough how much I love your channel. Absolutely superb information.
thanks a lot! just got rid of all my cracked plugins, felt pretty bad for a while now using them without paying... so i was searching for this solution for a long time! great video
wow... Was that ever helpful! I might've gone another 5-10 years before figuring _that_ one out! THANKS!
crazy, I can think of so many cool mixing and sound design tricks you can do with this!

Dope track. I’ve learn this all about listening and paying attention. Listening is key. It’s all about the ear

thankyou. I'm at this stage of learning production. so really useful
Never really paid attention to this when mixing. Thank you for clearing up this! I have learned so much from you! :)
Great explanation of Channel and Linear EQ! I had never understood it fully, now I get it. thanks so much!!!
This was extremely useful, I love this channel, thanks again.
Wow, that was a lifesaver. I'm so glad I found this vid. All of yours are helpful but this has put me over the top. Awesome !!!!

Superb presentation
this was so great and concise, thank you
freakin LOVE YOU MAN!!...you just given me 100s of hours in just 7 minutes..bless you
Another great informative, easy to understand video. Cheers!

Yes! Great point! I've been meaning to make a video on that too! I think that was something they added in the recent 10.4 update if I'm not mistaken.
This was VERY informative. Nice Job Josh!

Awesome! And very well explained, as always!
What an amazing informative video! Couldn't have explained things any better
very clear explanation, thank you so much!
Thank you. Wonderful job

Wow very nice! Thank you very much!
So helpful! Thank you!
Thanks again! Great channel. 👏👏👏
Perfect video! Very informative:)

Any pdf for applying mids/side proccessing for edm track while mixing process.
Thank you so much for your channel.

The difference between EQ and without EQ is huuuuuge! Wow!
Awesome! thanks for the video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you.
Very very helpful. Thanks!
Great tutorial, thank you!
Is non linear phase eq the same as minimum phase eq?
Could someone explain why I'm unable to do this on an .m4a file I'm dropping in?
I don’t understand how a signal that’s mid processed can feed into processing for side processing.
thank you mate, golden
Thanks!
Cool, Thank u!
Thankyou legend!!

@@MusicTechHelpGuy Thanks for the response and thank you for the very helpful content 🙏
Thanks bro
I really like the song you're using in the example. How come you use them then never put the bands name? I like the song I want to get it .
THIS WAS DOPE!!! #ThatsMyWord
Helpful
Thank you!!!
Big ups
You are the best
Man!!! this was useful!!!!!
You know what drives me crazy is that Izotope Neutron 2 doesn’t have mid side eq!!!! It cost as much as Logic!!!
I used Ozone 7 & Neutron. Dey look really nize but da final result was almost useless. Not worth da price.
Still waiting for simultaneous mid/side eq possibility in one plugin
