Hi everyone! I am the youngest son of little Willie who played in the band Royal King in the 60's/70's. I am 52 yrs now and did not realize until later in my younger life that my father played in the band back in the day. He passed away in 95' still loving music. Family and music was his life. If you would like to look up more music from The Royal Kings please look up these songs he left me on vinyl. (Take some time) (I will find) (Let's do the tighten up) (It's got to be you) I hope you enjoy!
Back in the day I had some great times and fond memories listening to the Royal Kings at the Kings Inn and dancing with stag ladies. Great to see you Kings on Facebook after so many years.
This is really cool. Bruce Jacobson was my 8th grade English teacher. I had no idea he made records too. I just Googled him and it looks like he does voice-overs now. Nice guy as far as I remember. I got an A in that class.
I was lead singer with a Roanoke-based band called "The Reasons Why" in the late 60s. I knew the Kings primarily from the old Driftwood Inn where they were house band during the week; we played the weekends. I don't remember this song, but do remember "Do the Tighten Up" (Our lead guitarist, Don Harris, was an invitee) and their version of "'You keep me Hanging on" (exceptional lead guitar work!). The Royal Kings I remember (Perry Calligan (sp?), Tommy Thompson, Jim Guilliams, - later Willie, et al) were (was?) a really tight, R&B leaning band. Great memories!! Is there any chance they're still doing their thing?! Leroy Harden Smith, Jr., outstanding bandmate and human being, RIP. I'll never forget you.
i remember being in a band with roger dickerson and only dreaming to be as good as the royal kings wished i could hear some of their songs that did get airplay in town
Short story-----------Bruce was sad about breaking up with his girlfriend was loafing around the house. His dad said, "Get over it! Just go upstairs and write a happy song" And that's the rest of the story!!!
I started playing in clubs here in roanoke va. When I was 12 yrs. Old, a guy used to come around and sit in with my band and was really good playing and singing old rock, his name was Wayne King. I was told by someone that the original Royal Kings was actually. ...Wayne King and the Royal Kings, does anyone know anything about that?
I certainly remember through the fog of time and blue smoke of yesteryear those grand eves at "The Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing's Inn!" (ala those radio spots) . As a product of Northside High Class of 70, having good times was my thing, with my then "wifey" and friends .around '72,'73, '74...Anybody remember the "Live and Kicking" concert and their hit "Hold On Just A Little Bit Tighter" there at King's Inn? Also, 'At Papa Joe's" (they wear nothin' on top!) was a fav of mine. Say "Hi" to Perry Callaghan for me, would ya?
Sharing my thoughts could take days, months, till somebody yell suzie spoon shut UPmy friends in the band are &sorry to say a few were great to be around. Some times after the gig more than during.Alot of members come & go but they all remember being in a long lived band. If the opportunity arises & this transplanted Texan ,should make it back to Roanoke again, I hope the "Kings" will be going strong & playing a gig some where. If you aren't I haunt all of you. So many good times were we really teen agers with fake ID's?My love goes out to all of you nokers. Play on, play on!!!!!

I knew "Little Willie". He was a great singer and drummer! My brother played in a rival band, The Divots.
I loved to hear Little Willie sing at the New Wood! He was just as good as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Percy Scheldge, and many others
I am so proud to have been in The Royal Kings and played at Chuck Poss's "Kings Inn!" Such great memories. Long live The Kings!!!
+Greg Slusher Did you ever play at the Tree House in Charlotte, NC?
Yes, Jenny! It must have been around 1971 or 2. Great times!!!
It was 1975 when my husband and I were dating. Will never forget those times.

The gentlemen's voice sounds a lot like the voice from the band "Blood, Sweat, and Tears."
