I grew up in Roanoke. Moved out of there and live in Phoenix Arizona now since 1995. I graduated HS in 1986. My senior year use to take my girl up to the Mill Mountain Star where would would sit all night and talk and see the lights of the city. Those were the days.

I remember cruising Williamson Rd on Friday & Saturday nights in the 70's & 80's... Just like in the movie American Graffiti...

Moved to Salem in December 1981, this video is very reminiscent of the Roanoke valley in 1986, sights seen are what it looked like. Thanks for this, even though in 86, I was completely into the Grateful Dead thing and other Psychedelic music thing and couldn’t care less what was happening in this area because it was so far behind, Thanks for this car ride, still very cool! Very.

      Went to Preston Park elementary.
We moved north to Harrisonburg in 1966.
Then truck company transferred my dad back in 72.
Cave Spring was a nice area.

Start out north on Williamson Rd until about 2:10, then west on Hershberger at 2:15, south on 581, then back onto South Williamson Rd at 3:55, pass Hotel Roanoke at about 4:25, onto the Jefferson Street Viaduct at 5:00, stopped at the light for Salem Ave. at 5:25, continue south on Jefferson past Heironimus Department Store at 5:47, west on Reserve Ave. at 6:29, south on Franklin Rd at 6:30, back north on 581 at 7:03, passing downtown again at 7:20, Roanoke Civic Center at 7:35, and a worried cop at 7:36...

    Great video, thanks for sharing.
I remember as a kid staying with my cousins who lived near Cross Roads Mall. It's was great we were allowed to walk or get dropped off at the mall. No worries back in the good ole days. 🕡

My old hometown. I left the Big Lick in 1986 for Northern Virginia, but have always maintained connections. When anyone asks me where I am from, the answer is always Roanoke. It was a great place to grow up. I recognize every frame of this video. Brings back memories.

I forgot all about that old water tower being there just before the N&W Shops. So many things have changed since then, but enough remains the same to know where the drive took ya.

Roanoke valley is STILL very far behind, but THANKS for the video! Btw, 1986 was my personal worst year of the 80’s besides 82, but still nice to see all these years later. Thanks

The cars probably the most thing that has changed now all you see SUV's and people on cell phones. even here in Spotsylvania county I been here since 1994 and it went from being a small town to now being almost like a big city.

Tanglewood Mall with normal commerce. Haven't seen that in a while. I call it Regula 1 now, after the science outpost in Star Trek II. A few orbital businesses surrounding a dead planet with a hollow interior...

what was the original audio? if it was a radio station, what type of music? Rock, Pop, New Wave? I remember K92 and Q99

    • @BeatlesTribute
      @BeatlesTribute  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks for watching! Great question! I do remember it was Pop music. I'm a rocker but Q99 had just gotten away from Album Rock and switched over to the Lite Pop that they still play. WROV was still just an AM station at that time. The original music that TH-cam made me replace was Chicago, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner. So I believe my girlfriend (driver/future wife) had it tuned to Q99.

My father worked at Roadside Furniture in Hollins when I was little...I think it's a Karate shop or something now. We lived in Buchanan at the time (on Lowe Street) and I recall bits and pieces of the '85 flood. I was 3 at the time. I have fond memories of Roanoke, the "big" city for me growing up. And yes, I do remember Tanglewood and Crossroads hopping in the late 80's early 90's :) I seem to recall a store called Waccamaws (spelling?) at Crossroads. And going Hills! But the thing I remember the most was going to Happy's with my parents. They loved that flea market! And afterwards we'd ALWAYS go to K&W for our meal LOL. Great memories.

My Parents and Family Moved to the Area. I had stayed with them for about a year and a Half before the Army sent Me to West Germany.
I had been Stationed at Fort Belvoir and appreciated being able to drive home on the weekend and sleep in my own bed and have homemade breakfast with fresh perked coffee. I also liked hiking the Peaks of Otter.
The 80's were good times for that area.

There was a store called Waccamaw that started in 1977 in Myrtle Beach. It was first a pottery company and then it was a furniture company.
Was that what you were talking about?

That might be what I was talking about. Last time I was there for my family reunion I don’t recall it being there. It’s been a couple of years we didn’t have a family union this year because of the virus. Also hate The fact that they tore down Happys flea market and we’re going to the shop when I was little as well to
