If you're watching this, it's because you love a song - more than that, you love how someone plays that song. Several artists have covered "Wagon Wheel," an inescapable staple of folk festivals and hootenannies. But you know what? No one performs that ramblin' folk stomper quite like Old Crow Medicine Show. So here, 20 years after the band recorded and turned it into a phenomenon, Ketch Secor and his band open their Tiny Desk with "Wagon Wheel."
For nearly three decades, Old Crow Medicine Show has served up a revved-up take on old-time music, folk, bluegrass, country and everything else tossed into what we call roots music. That energy, still wired from its early busking days, translates here as the band runs through "O Cumberland River" and "Wolfman of the Ozarks," complete with train-chugging harmonica and a jaw harp duet. The group closes with "One Drop," a hopeful, gospel-style call for unity in a moment we could all use some.

Thanks for having us! We had a blast on Tiny Desk!
@@oldcrowmedicineshowvideos YALL ARE KEEPING ME ALIVE. The whole new album is beautiful and inspiring. Painkiller and Bombs Away I LOVE 💚💚💚
@@oldcrowmedicineshowvideos Thank you for years of music and memories. Lifelong fan of ocms.
Thanks for rocking out!
Please come back to Wilmington NC!
A few weeks back went to Nashville for the first time ever for a family reunion. This is what it felt like the whole time I was there. Ya'll are now on my daily musical playlist rotation. Muchas gracias amigos!
Once again, the Tiny Desk sound engineer kills it. Listening on a smartphone speaker and this 6? piece band sounds like an orchestra 🔥
Tiny Desk, Big Mix
Listen to the highway number
Wagon Wheel was the last song I sung with my mom before she died. Thank you for that memory ✌️
Do you think there's people under the desks? How many? What are they doing?
It's a very clean sounding mix.
Singing with all that energy and playing the fiddle at the same time has to be astronomically difficult
So good- this man was made to lead this band. That hat was never going to stay on that head.
Serious contender for the most fun a musician has had on Tiny Desk!!
Old Crow and Tank and the Bangas are my picks.
As a Johnson City, TN native, I hear Wagon Wheel nearly every day in some capacity. It never gets old.
I had the pleasure of visiting Johnson City twice years ago. My pleasure was seeing those mountains. Beautiful area....🏞️🏞️🏞️🏞️🏞️
I’m from Philly and I don’t, but the same goes!
Also from Johnson City (technically Unicoi) and I’m only here for the reference. I couldn’t care less about the rest of their music 😂
☝🤓 um ackshully johnson city is EAST of the Cumberland Gap
I cover this as “he’s headin’ west TO the Cumberland Gap AND Johnson City, Tennessee.”
A little picky, maybe, but I’m big on the geography bein’ from Appalachia, and I don’t want anybody scratchin’ their heads at a crucial moment 😂
I was a raft guide in the smoky mountains when Wagon Wheel came out and it was played all season, so I’m always reminded of the Pigeon River when I hear it now
nice! music is magic!
I had the same experience in Utah! Definitely have in memorized
I’ve floated the nearby Blackfoot river here in Montana to the same song
Hartford?

"Wagon Wheel" was one of the first songs my late friend Ryan and I (and several others) ever learned to play together and every time I hear it I think of him. Thanks for being part of that memory.
really nice to see people loving what they're doing
Wow, that energy is infectious!
usually not a fan of this type of music but it put a smile on my face.
This is just "one drop"! You should see them in person!
Energy level was off the charts with these guys! So good!!!
This is coming from someone who isn’t the biggest country listener, this performance is really fun to watch
I dunno I've never considered them country... Folk music.
this isnt country this is bluegrass 💜
If one more person calls bluegrass country music.... 😡
You simply have to be in a better mood after listening to this ❤
I won some free tickets to see them a couple years ago. I only knew them for Wagon Wheel. They had Molly Tuttle opening for them. That concert was one of the best and most fun concerts I've been too. Made big fan out of me that night. And hope them come back around my way soon..
Is this the first appearance of Old Crow on Tiny Desk?! They are simply the best at what they do!
Sad that they are only now on the show after years of being one of the best
OCMS is like Taylor Swift of bluegrass...
@@seanclimbhey man whatever gets them to know the smaller guys like Steve Martin and the Hillbilly Thomists...amiright?
Is that good or bad? @@seanclimb
@@sheddon.@sheddon, Both. It's good for the bluegrass genre to have some "mainstream bluegrass" to help introduce more people to this type of music. But "mainstream" and "bluegrass" also seem contradictory and I don't like pop music so from that perspective, humanity should be spared from having to endure another rendition of "Wagon Wheel'.
as someone from Appalachia in Kentucky, these guys are truly the masters of the genre. I grew up on around the legacies of old tent revivals and listening to old folk music from the 50s and its just so cool that they are keeping that energy alive. I've never seen them play live before, great energy! So impressive to play fiddle and do lead vocals at the same time
Man I would love to see these guys live. I'm not even that into this type of music but fantastic energy, love it.
OCMS shows are some of the best shows I've ever seen!
I've seen them a few times and they never disappoint.
Do it! We had so much fun the whole show and then Wagon Wheel at the end with my wife in my arms is something I'll never forget.
Oh and Ketch's energy is insane, he had just as much in my tiny little town as he did here. So fun.
Saw them in 2006 or 2007 in a bar in st Louis back when Wille Watson was in the band and they about brought the house down.
They are incredible live! Just saw them in the fall
Love the confidence of opening up with Wagon Wheel. They crushed it so hard, I wanted to keep going with them. Each song, while listening, I was finding it on Apple Music and adding it to my current playlist. I've loved Wagon Wheel for 15 years, but never thought to go deeper on them. Will be listening to a lot of them in the next few weeks. They have this wonderful band on the run feel.
Listen to albums, not songs. Not only will you get a much better feeling for the artist, but you'll find the hidden gems that you'd otherwise miss out on your whole life. Give it a try-trust me😉
Agreed. Of course, you know that Secor co-wrote WW with Dylan.
he wrote wagon wheel!
@@CMDR.Gonzo.von.Richthofen I finally got my friend to do this, changed his life
@@CMDR.Gonzo.von.Richthofen It's their song.
as a north carolinian it's great to see our state anthem performed on tiny desk 😎
Watching this and the doechii tiny desk back to back is the best possible form of whiplash 😂
Saw them a couple weeks ago at the Grand Ole Opry. Amazing show, and now to find them on Tiny Desk.
Raised my energy, that's for sure!
Thanks OCMS and Tiny Desk for the infectious toe tapping vibes. Love your work, all the way from New Zealand!.
It sounds like from other times… awesome. Will be looking into them
Oh my goodness, I love good music. And this is it. Thank you Tiny Desk.
My morning just got better. Thanks OCMS and Tiny Desk ❤❤❤
What an amazing concert holy smokes! Every one of these musicians is so freaking talented! This has brought me joy to watch! Thanks guys!
Think these guys are talented? Check out Ketch Secor's girlfriend....you can thank me later....
a few years ago in Raleigh at the outdoor hockey game, late in the 3rd period with no PA music the crowd sang Wagon wheel from start to finish, it was fantastic!
My 8th grade math teacher made me an OCMS mix cd and I’ve been listening ever since so this is a highlight tiny desk for me. I’m only 29 but that’s half my life listening to these guys!
Yeah these guys are great
Welp, this immediately gets added into the pantheon of Tiny Desk Concert performances
This is superlative. The joy these men exhibit during the performace is contagous. I want to see them live now.
Looking forward to seeing OCMS on New Year's Eve at The Ryman in Nashville ! Their shows are the best way to ring in the New Year ! 🎻🎸🪕🎹
Why did it take so long to get these guys on Tiny Desk? Glad they finally got to do this. Because they are an amazing string band!!! True bluegrass
I listened to them like crazy in my teenage years, thank you NPR for bringing them back
Absolutely magnificent. It gives me good memories from Tennessee but I’ve never been there. 😂😂😂
Same! I will meet you there.
I encourage anyone who enjoyed this to look up other songs of theirs such as Sweet Amarillo, I Hear Them All, and Old Hickory. They rule!
This was spectacular! I couldn't help but think of the late great Gord Downie while watching Ketch perform... (very different music, same spirit)
Love the energy of not just the lead but the whole band like it better live than recorded good stuff guys and thanks tiny desk for all of the good stuff that happens there much love for it all made my night after a long day of work and the next morning when I was on break from making paint. 👍🏻
Wagon wheel was one of the first songs, if not the first song I learned to play and sing with my buddies when we were 13 years old, just discovering bluegrass and stringband music. It's overplayed, sure, and not always done well, but when I hear these guys playing it I can't help moving. Such amazing energy. Also that last number is absolutely gorgeous. So many amazing voices singing together!
He rocked his hat right off of his head!!
Tiny desk tiny hat
I wondered how long it would take before his hat fell haha, not too long..
Man, the drummer has vocal chops! Wish they'd feature him some more.
Musicianship with unlimited energy 🎉 amazing show
Old Crow's Wagon wheel has been my favorite song since I was 8!
Absolute magic! Please tour the UK!
saw these guys sometime around 2005.... by far the most unexpected and unforgettable concert I've ever seen. I just followed a bunch of hardcore fans towards the stage... had no idea who I was gonna see, but the energy their local fans had got me all caught up and I had to see what it was all about. Love this group to this day. Sparked a whole bluegrass discovery and changed my musical borders forever! Thanks for that show OCMS!
This is one of the best TDCs I've seen but dang it makes me feel like an old man.
I love this band !
Ketch's energy is absolutely contagious! Saw OCMS in CO about 10 years ago, got hooked, and they still got it!!
I saw OCMS at Wolf Trap, outside DC, this past summer. So much energy! And the members each played multiple instruments.
@ best part of a performance like OCMS! Flexible musicians make the band energy amazing
That was fantastic! their enjoyment was contagious and exactly what is needed at the moment. Well done OCMS!
Wagon wheel is my go to drinking song. You can play it any party in the South and 90% of the people will know the lyrics. Love from South Carolina to anybody reading this❤
One of the best tiny desk love old crow
Splendid show !!
Great way to start my day. Thanks NPR
Here you find Irish,French traditional music the roots going Sooo Deep, and beyond hello from Greece
West African and Scottish as well
That's the beauty of American folk/jazz ...it's takes homage from so many genres and blends them together. Say what you will about everything else but the US has done well with its traditional and blended music. And for that I am grateful
Said it before and I'll say it again.... Sound engineer and desk man need more money ❤ OCMS absolutely knocked it outta the park too
My wife and I drove 12 hrs one-way, leaving at 4am, to see these guys in concert. It was our one chance to see them in Canada at that time, and was worth it!! I appreciate the wider audience DR gave Wagon Wheel, but these guys will always be the OG GOAT
OUTSTANDING!! 👏👏👏👏 Thank y'all
OCMS was an unexpected and welcome surprise today, thanks Tiny Desk!
What a glorious surprise this morning! Love. Love. Love.
I love these guys!
OCMS: my favorite band ever. I play them every day. ❤ love and adoration from Connecticut
Thanks for introducing me to Old Crow Medicine Show! That was FUN!
I have never enjoyed anything this related to country. The folk, blues, and gospel were just a bonus. Can't wait to share with my elementary students and add to my personal playlists!
Love these guys, but white shirt man's energy definitely took this performance to the next level!
Ketch Secor is one of a kind!
These guys are so much fun to watch! Great show!
What a gift! We are so lucky that they are touring, however still no West Coast dates!! I will kick down some bread to fly you guys to CA.
Have been a big fan of OCMS for years now, haven't seen or heard them recently, but they never fail to impress with their incredible talent and energy - wow!!
They should make a movie about these guys
check out big easy express if you haven't seen it
@@randomdestructn Thanks
What a great performance!! Thanks OCMS you guys never disappoint.
Top tier ELITE live show. Always a great time!!!
I had the opportunity to see OCMS at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City a week before Thanksgiving. Willie Watson opened and joined them for several songs. Such a fun show, I'd go see them any and every time they play around here.
Killer venue! Can't imagine how good they sounded there.
Ha this takes me back about 20 years wow. Everyone I knew played this dang song when it came out. We saw them a good few times in the nearby pub
Even I sang it with Harvard physics professors at a back-yard party in Cambridge.
I had a bet with myself how long it would take the hat to fall. Great performance. Luv it. ❤
Absolutely awesome really enjoyed these dudes and the front man hes great amazing facial expressions 😂
I just got front row for old Crow in Shipp schwa Indiana. I'm super pumped. Going front row in Amish country!!!
OCMS Are one of THE Best ... To those that have NEVER seen them live i HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend it !!!!!
I was really into live acoustic joints in the late 2000s back home in Kentucky so I've heard wagon wheel enough for one lifetime- I never knew old crow brought that kind of energy, love to see it
🎉🪕🎻🎸🥁❤ love these boys so much fun live
Discovered these guys during the pandemic. Kept me company and provided all kinds of entertainment.
Thanks.
i havent heard this in YEARS since i moved from Oklahoma!!!!
Seriously what a killer band, and one of the best energetic bluegrass frontman alive. Makes me feel niceyyyyy 😎
Only the second person I've ever seen play the bones, the first being a dear friend. Props to Dante' and of course the rest of the band!
Wagon Wheel ❤ The first song I heard from Old Crow Medicine Show many years ago and I loved it.
Great set to showcase the many talents of all the members.
Thanks again NPR and Artists!
I remember seeing you guys at an early "Strictly Bluegrass" (as I think it was then -- now "Hardly Strictly...") in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco -- probably 2004. You sang "Wagon Wheel", and cemented it in my memory. You've been one of my favourite Americana (I guess) groups ever since. Glad that you're around!
I needed the joy of this music this morning. This made my day. Thank you!
Feels like a big giant hug. Thanks, Tiny Desk.
One of the best bands around! Killer live show 🔥 🔥 🔥
I was so stoked they played O Cumberland River! While I love WW, OCR is my favorite. Many thanks!
Wagon wheel takes me back to the days when I was 16 in back country NZ driving the hay truck with my buddies on the back, making what felt like mega-bucks, having the times of our lives and rocking out to this after sunset with a few cold brews... now leme tell you, THOSE were the days
Thanks for adding a little sway to my morning. Cup of joe and beautiful music. Thanks for the vibes, OCMS, and Tiny Desk!!
One of the Best Tiny Desk!!
Wolfman of the mountain just calling the hog? That's so hard. You pulled out all the stops for that one. Wooooahhhhaaaa. Took out the whistleblower. Left no next of kin!
Why can't I like this more than once?
You can always tell who is a true artist… bravo
Saw them at a festival this past summer. Best show I’ve ever seen! The energy and the way they make each show unique is what’s got them at the top of my list. Highly recommend seeing them if you have the chance
I saw Ketch twice this weekend as the emcee at the Ann Arbor folk festival he was much fun and two shows were very good.
Wow great performance!!!
Thank you for that
Freakin LOVE IT!!!!
