    Games Played: Balloon Kid (0:00), Ninja Gaiden (0:13), Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (0:24), Super Mario Land 2 (0:40), Donkey Kong Country 2 (1:03). Also, a lot of people have mentioned the original Xbox as their choice. Definitely a good case to be made for it!

    NES seems to have the advantage that many new and younger collectors find the games hard to get into. That generally makes them avoid the console which is great because it keeps the demand down.

      This is true for a majority of the NES library. But some of them must have games can still cost an arm and a leg. But, that would still be cheaper than trying to have a comparable SNES collection for sure.

      The thing with the NES, as with most all consoles, interest and prices peak when the kids that grew up with them get in their mid to late 20's, have settled down a bit, have disposable income and think "man I sure loved playing my ______ when I was a kid, I think I will buy one and all the games I had, and then branch off into all the good games they couldnt have as well. Then the prices spike. NES has passed that point, thats why the Gamecube is so hot right now, cause the 8-12 year olds that had are now 28-32 year olds. So the 360 ps3 will be next, and possibly Wii but that console was so wildly popular, only the most obscure good games will be pricey.

    One simple rule: Always collect one generation earlier. Only problem at this exact moment is, there are few PS5/XSX exclusive games. All the games are also released on PS4/XB1. In a few years time it will be the time to collect PS4/XB1 games.

    • @breakfasthole3851
      @breakfasthole3851 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was about to say this. PS3 and 360 prices are still pretty low here in the UK too. Without going into all the reasons, it's mostly about more people selling off stuff they don't use anymore and fewer people wanting to play and collect what they're selling. Once it becomes 'retro' in another console generation later, you've missed that time when the retro gamers and collectors weren't there and prices become more like they were when the games were new

    • @jonnyOysters
      @jonnyOysters 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like that works once the new generation is in full motion. The ps5/XSX is still in its foundational stage specially since not that many people have been able to get their hands on new consoles and as you said not enough people have made new games for the systems.

Thanks for the Atari shoutout - my 2600/5200/7800 games are still cheap, and boxed Intellivision is still fun. Game Gear is another cheap option. Master System isn’t bad. Yeah the CD games are pretty affordable, especially compared to AES and even MVS cartridges. The console is probably pretty cheap because most people seem to try and get a hold of the CDZ variant for the faster CD-ROM drive. The CDZ goes for crazy money now.

    As with all markets, it’s about supply vs demand. Collectors who got into retro games for the money, artificially created demand by implementing the grading system. Don’t fall for the scheme. Outside of that artificial inflation, it’s just supply and demand.
    Some games aren’t in demand because no one knows them or they suck. Others are in demand because people know them or they’re fun.

      That’s why you get a lot of TH-camrs *cough* Metal Jesus *cough* who flip through their own collection and make “Hidden Gem” videos. While they’re good videos to turn people on to new games they never considered. They caused nearly every game mentioned to spike in price. Example: Xbox Outrun Coast to Coast was approximately $30 before his video, and about $150 shortly after.

  • @baronhausenpheffer
    @baronhausenpheffer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I would add the Sega Genesis to the list for the same reason you mentioned for the PS2: Sega has repeatedly anthologized and re-released almost every good first-party game in its library across multiple consoles for almost 30 years. They started it with "Sonic Jam" on the Sega Saturn all the way back in the mid-90s... heck, arguably did it first on the Genesis itself with the "Sega 6-Pack" cartridge! Anyway, there will always be a few games in the library ("Crusader of Centy", etc.) that remain stupidly expensive, but the vast majority will never explode in price simply because there are so many cheap, affordable ways to play those games apart from the original hardware.

And Castlevania, Shining Force III, IV, Thunder Force III, IV or Streets of Rage 3 are very expensive. At least here in Europe. You can have a great amount of best games for the PS2 without robbing a bank, if you exclude some horror games that is.

Like Monster Hunter Stories 2. The first 3DS Title did costs around 15€ and now ppl want 60-80€. Just crazy how "interesst of ppl" makes a jump, just because they may never played a 3DS before or even know there was a first Game. Same happen atm with Metroid Dread. I've noticed a few sellers on EBay in particular that constantly buy up games that are in low supply and then reselling them for literally 3 to 4 times the actual value. They often times don't sell BUT it leads to artificial price hikes because other newbie sellers think the game is really that valuable. This also leads to buyers feeling they have to spend more or lose out. I don't see this trend changing any time soon.

    Yeah, I think a lot of people threw away those old cardboard boxes they used to use for games. The issue is that cardboard just sends this message that "this is disposable" and that you shouldn't keep it. That's why I like that they eventually switched to things like DS game cases and any game case like the PS2 going forward. They're so much sturdier and easily send the message that you want to keep this.

      I'm pretty sure the cardboard boxes that Nintendo put their games in were intended to be thrown away. They expected you to put all your loose carts in a cart rack or something like that; the box was just for retail display. The Sega clamshell cases were obviously meant to be kept.

    I know a lot of people don't consider it a retro console, but every time I go to a flea market, antique store, yard sale, or whatever it may be, I see truckloads of Xbox 360 games for pennies on the dollar, even for the best games for the console. I think it's easy for a lot of people to forget the Xbox 360 is almost 18 years old now, so I think it's fair to consider at least the early games for it to be retro games now. Even if you don't consider the 360 a retro console, it has compatibility with the majority of worthwhile OG Xbox games, which are also still really cheap.

    Two more that I'd add to that list are the original Xbox and Wii. Heck, I was even able to find a 'like new' copy of the legendary edition of Halo 2 for only like $30, where special editions of retro games can go for hundreds of dollars, normally. Most of the games I've picked up on Ebay for the Xbox and Wii have been around $10-15. There's also lots of games that came out on the GC, PS2, and Xbox where the GC and PS2 versions are extremely pricey while the Xbox version is much more affordable. I've seen games on Xbox that were $50+ more on the GC, for instance. A sizeable portion of the 3DS library is still very affordable, but I don't expect it to last long. There's a few more niche games spiking in price, at the moment, but you can still get many at a decent price, for now.

    The cheapest to collect here in is N64 and DS games in terms of retro gaming. I think people don't praise enough N64 in these days and DS sold a lot here, so there's plenty offer for its games.

    The atari 2600 gets a bad rap for all the absolute garbage on it, but look at it this way, it’s the growing pains of home consoles. If you look for the arcade ports, which are for the most part fun or decent, and some of the better original titles like Yars Revenge, you’ll be able to get so many great pieces of history for dirt cheap, CIB Atari games are surprisingly cheap too if that’s your thing. Don’t expect a thrilling narrative or even beautiful graphics, instead look at it as a part of history and the fact that they even got them to run on the Atari to begin with

    On a topic like this, there is one big factor that has yet to take full effect. And that is when modern gaming goes totally Cloud. As in it's all run on some remote super servers and everyone rents access. Once the world is forced to choose whether they will dish out the monthly cash for that PlayStation/X-Box/Nintendo/RockStar/Sega/Brand Y gaming app access to just play games with, then we will truly see where the classic retro games that you can own for life truly stand with those 'to be' generations.
    Sure. We've seen the Stadia make that Mario jump towards the idea. And the world will probably vaguely remember it in the same lime light as the Sega Channel as being a noble idea that was just too far ahead of the technical curve for it's own good. But the world is pushing hard for that 5G and ever more stable internet. It's really just a matter of time before processing the game inside your home becomes antiquated. But, should we let the gaming industry become so remotely hosted?
    After all, it's like when I wanted to see an entire series of a show and found the on-line hosted versions were just a bit more expensive then their DVD counterparts. With the hosted streams, I merely bought a (questionable) lifetime access to them. But, by getting it physically, not only can I view those episodes on days when the internet goes down, but I got something physical that I can resell, should I so chose to do so. Those remotely hosted episodes? I'm just stuck with a contract to be able to view them.
    Same with gaming. I physically own that Super Mario Bros game. (Oh, yea. The night I paid a whopping eleven cents at a brick-and-mortar store. How even that game has shot up from those days.) And I can do whatever I want with it. Like glue it together with a few hundred more copies to make a king's throne...per say. Or sell it for a great increase of a whole $8. With current digital, I technically leased the software for the life of the console it's stored on. And probably cost $25 for the right to download. And in a slightly future setting of remotely hosted...I'm probably dishing out $5 per month for it. (May Nintendo always be the cheap internet choice.) ("What's that? What just happened? $50 a year, they just announced? (Well, may Nintendo stop being greedy and return to being the lowest online.))
    If rental access doesn't bloat by greed, it's possible that the future generations will just pay the price with little thought about it. (Just the way life is.) Or maybe...future gamers will get fed up with paying for this, that and the kitchen sink to enjoy the simple act of gaming...and find new value in stuff you can hold in your hand. Only time will tell.

    • @paddfootsam

      I dread that day. It seems like ever since gaming left the arcade it's been trying to find a way back to it. Don't get me wrong, I have a deep love for various arcade games, but you know kids dumped more quarters into those machines then the modern physical games costs today.
      I sincerely hope cloud gaming services of the future don't end up like movie streaming services. Everyone wants a piece of that Netflix pie and it's become a nightmare.

    Great video bird, as always. Gameboy was the first to come to mind as well. Both for the reasons you mentioned and, well, hopeful thinking because I’m collecting for it too. 🤣 There are always exceptions, but I’d say most of the library is within reach even if it’s not dirt cheap any longer. It’s also refreshing that many of the games are shorter and light-weight. Just pickup and play which is great for me and my never ending backlog.
    As far as GBA, it’s probably the best device for ROI and gb/gbc compatibility, but yeah some of the game prices are insane. I’m looking to pick up more of the Super Mario Advance series as they’re still very reasonable. Unfortunately I can’t see myself getting others that I really want like Minish, Metroid fusion, zero mission, aria of sorrow and others. I’ll just play them on WiiU VC.
    …speaking of WiiU - I honestly haven’t looked at prices. I know I was able to pick up some 3rd party stuff dirt cheap years ago. Im wondering if lack of sales will drive prices up as there will be less copies of games available when people want to get into it.

    • @baronhausenpheffer
      @baronhausenpheffer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% agree on this. The 360 is in a sweet spot right now for collecting because it's still in that limbo area where it's just considered "old" by gamers rather than "retro". The games are still plentiful and pretty easy to find, and it had a ton of excellent exclusives and also great ports of games that went multi-platform. The same thing is mostly true of the PS3, but I have noticed that in almost every case the 360 version tends toward being cheaper when a game appeared on both consoles, even if their gameplay was identical.

    In most cases, the most affordable game systems are the ones that are a console generation or two old when the systems and software are still available and sold at some stores but are no longer commonly seen.
    The Xbox 360 and now the Xbox One are good examples of this. Xbox 360 games were and are exceptionally prevalent and you can find them in most retro and thrift stores today and the Xbox One titles are slowly being phased out slowly to make way for the Series X titles, making them easy to come buy for decent prices. The same goes for Wii software as well.

    My largest collection is for Gameboy. If you can get import copies you can save so much. 1-3 bucks can get you a pretty good game. We live in Japan though, so that's easy for us. But sometimes I just want to play in English... Even then importing a NA game to here isn't that bad in price compare to some systems.
    But if you just want to play and enjoy games, Everdrives and other flashcarts make the hobby so much more affordable. The question is are you a collector or just a gamer? That can really determine what systems are affordable or not.

    I think the prices will keep going up because the games and consoles are finite and shrinking buy the day. (Being lost, or destroyed) and the amount of gamers growing each day(A much larger audience that existed in the consoles original life time and also more self aware of these consoles than most were when they were active). And if even a fraction of those new growing gamers are hardcore or retro the market demand is even larger.

If you are patient you can get a legit copy of any DS Poke'mon game for 70% of the ebay going rate. Also, while I agree that NES is affordable it's not without some expensive must-have games. Megaman 5, Metal Storm, Felix the Cat, Gargoyles Quest II, and Zen Intergalactic Ninja are all well over $100.

      Even some of the decent rpgs are cheap on the DS, Radiant historia is quite affordable.

    I would think Virtual Boy games would be some of the most affordable, unless the Virtual Boy is sought after. I'm sure there's lots of shovelware titles that would be super cheap too, like Ninjabread Man or games with 101-in-1 or 1001-in-one in their titles. Of course, their low prices might be because those games/consoles suck, not popular in gaming discourse, or whatever reason.

      Virtual Boy games are not especially cheap, mainly because of the low print run and how briefly they were on the market. "Mario Tennis" (the pack-in), "Wario Land" (arguably its only GREAT game), and "Red Alarm" are all pretty cheap due to their popularity and ubiquity, but you can run into some money or scarcity issues collecting the rest.

    I find it funny that the PS2 ‘had a lot of games’
    Checkout how many games were released for stuff like the C64 and Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
    That’s a LOT 😆
    I really like that you’ve focused on stuff that we can still afford/justify.
    The other end of the market has gone a bit crazy.
    Handheld in general is mostly still fun to collect for, although Vita and New 3DS/ New 2DS stuff is for sure creeping up.

    I feel like the Sega Master System is more or less in the same boat as the Game Boy; any window for the prices of most games to go crazy has already come and gone, and for the Master System games that _are_ super expensive in North America, there's always a more accessibly priced European version of the game.

    I'm sending in my sealed games into this service called my game room. Where I open them put them in the console and play them

    Tough to argue with your logic. Good advice for anyone involved in the hobby. Only one I would add is the Sega Genesis.

    I agree with Game Boy and NES probably staying moderately priced. The Sega Master System's library is also pretty affordable, especially for being somewhat obscure. But Playstation 2 can be selectively affordable. If you're looking at jrpg and 2/2.5D platforming games, expect to hand over your life savings. Also, games like Silent Hill 2 that got a greatest hits treatment, releases on all other consoles at he time, and a PS3 HD remaster is insanely expensive.
