Growing up my older cousin had an impressive SNES collection. He turned it all in for a 3DO at launch lol. Was exciting at the time to get to play the new fancy looking console but in hindsight the console swap was BRUTAL

My breakup with Wii U was nasty. I spent so much money to make the relationship work and Wii U just always felt like it was going through the motions. Looking back I realize it was caught between two worlds and not clear what it was. Best of luck.

The Wii U is emotionally draining. Mine always wants me close to it. I do want to work things out, but sometimes it control is hard to fix.
The Wii U had a much stronger game library than most people think. Nintendo's marketing was confusing. Look how many games have been ported to the Switch and been wildly successful.

This may be more recent but breaking up with my PS3 to look at the PS4. I only sold the console and kept the games. PS4 games were incomplete and with microtransactions leading to resentment.
I bought the PS3 back and expanded the library with more unique titles that I was unaware of at the time (such as Sly Cooper). And to this day, we keep a healthy relationship and haven't looked back
Not me but my dad has many. My dad was one of the very, very few who bought an Atari Lynx back when the system was brand new. He was only about 10 or 11, but within a week he decided to trade it in for a Game Boy, mostly because he couldn't find any games he wanted for the console. This led into his breakup with the Game Boy, after owning it for a week he got really angry at a game and smashed the system into a sidewalk, breaking it, and then kicked the pieces into a nearby sewer drain. Cut to 30 years later and he suddenly regrets both of these dumb decisions, he now bought a Game Boy Color and has hopes of getting an Atari Lynx to return to a time he misses out on. He sold off his SNES and Genesis catalogues back in the 90s, then began re-collecting for them both in the late 2000s, then sold them off again in the late 2010s, and is now re-collecting AGAIN for both platforms. He has a hard time making up his mind about items he owns. He likes something, but the second he gets bored of it even for a small duration he thinks it's time to sell it, and then a year or two later is already regretting his decision.
The Neo-Geo CD. I thought it was gonna be awesome to buy arcade perfect Neo-Geo games that weren’t $150-$200 each. But the loading times were just so unbearable.
The Neo SD Loader has fixed those slow loading times. So it might be worth it to you now.
Then again it's a safer bet to play Neo Geo games on the Neo Geo CD instead of playing on Sony 2
I didn't know about this until the Hi Score Girl anime. There is a scene where you literally have to watch a Neo Geo CD game load. It was on Netflix.
Great topic! Console breakups happened all the time when I was a kid as I just didn't have the money to keep buying the newest one until I got older, so I had to sell my previous console and games to afford it.
One in particular stuck with me. When I was a kid, I owned an NES late into its life cycle when the 16 bit era was taking off. One of my best friends had a Sega Genesis and showed me many amazing games that just blew my little mind! I wanted a Genesis so badly that I sold my NES and all of my NES games (that I loved) to my cousins. When I finally received the Genesis, I loved it completely, but I always had this little feeling of remorse in the back of my mind for that NES that I abandoned.
I live her own to Playstation or Xbox I grew up as part of the master race they remain part of the master race except now I have a Dependable switch
I bet a lot of people have a story very similar to yours. Did you ever see the cousins you sold it to? You could at least still play it when you visited if so.
@@RetroBirdGaming Well, I did see my cousins who I sold it to, but, unfortunately, they never took good care of the system. I had kept the system in excellent condition complete with everything (boxes/manuals).
However, at their place it was covered in dust, stained, and all the boxes and manuals were now torn or completely missing. Made me feel even worse. 😅

Broke up with my TurboGrafx-16 when I was 12. Traded it and about 15 games (including the Bonk games and some other rarities) for an SNES with two generic games. You have to understand that where I lived, TG-16s were bargain bin consoles at every pawn shop. You could buy one with about 5 games for $30. How could I have known at the tender age of 12 what a rare love I possessed? You shall be mine again some day, TG-16!
Had an unfortunate break up with the snes when I sold it and all my games many years ago. Haven’t yet been able to swallow the bitter pill of buying it all back… yet… 😢
Yeah, that's a tough one. Always hard to buy something back you already had.
In 2014 after collecting all of the systems and games I wanted,I though this is it. I’m getting too old for these old video games. I rarely play them so I sold my whole collection just to be able to go to the bar with my college friends. 🤦🏽 I regret it yes but it has been a blast rebuilding my old collection and making it 10x better then it was ! Sometime the breakups make you realized what you had 😂

I had 7 retro systems at one point including a Dreamcast and the orange N64 with matching controller... Sold them all except my colecovision and nes. I've regretted it ever since. 🤷🏻♂️
The PlayStation Vita was one I feel out of. Not the Vita's fault but when I first owned it, I was put off by Sony's lack of support for the thing. So I sold it, thinking the Switch was a better version of that idea. Bonehead move, cuz the Vita is dope. Earlier this year I got another one this time with the early OLED screen and jailbroken. Turns out it's a pretty amazing indie machine, has some cool exclusives, can function as a PSP, can emulate older consoles, and has a smaller form factor than the Switch which depending on the situation can be a great thing. Viva la Vita.
The Vita is awesome! I have had 3, first was stolen, second I lost and the third was stolen again. Going to buy a 4th when I get the funds again. I absolutely love the Vita.
I think the Vita's a nice system, but I've struggled to find a reason to keep mine. I find all the reasons I bought it in the first place can be done better by my Switch or Steam Deck. I think Tearaway's really great, and the PS4 version isn't nearly as good, but I don't know if I'd miss it if I sold mine.
Try Hotline Miami, waaay better on PSV for this exact reason you wrote: the smaller size makes it way easier to lock on enemies via Touchscreen
@@swissoccer Yep, loved playing Hotline Miami on Vita for that reason. It was a perfect fit.
For most, its probably the Wii. We played it as kids...then rejected it. Stupid waggle controls. But as we have grown older we have fallen back in love. If you haven't fallen back in love with your Wii yet, you will...you will. It is a beautiful consoles with so much to offer. It went from my least favorite console to my new favorite when I gave it another chance.
Wii is probably the most common answer I've seen.
oh hell yeah. i can relate to a lot of these. i was an n64 kid but at one point i just had it, there just werent enough games i wanted to play and no non-nintendo stuff. i was craving the ps1 and flipped sometime in 1998. I also entirely skipped the ps4 gen and skipping this gen as well. I've been on PC.
I would say I fall into that category of falling out of a particular Generation. I have no desire to get a PS5 or a Series X. I don’t like where gaming is headed with mandatory downloads, games not running off disc, required internet, DLC, Roadmaps, and Microtransactions. The amount of storage they provide you for this so called all Digital age is piss poor when you compare it to past generations. I won’t support the way we are being taken advantage of with more expensive games that don’t even come out complete and try to get us to purchase Season Passes. The most recent console I play is the Switch because at least most of the game is on the card. I have almost an ikea shelf full of games off one 256 Gig Card on the Switch with about half the space to spare, meanwhile you might be able to have 2 or 3 games only with that amount of storage on PS5 or series X. That is just pitiful. I have been enjoying just collecting and playing each system between the Nes and Switch. It sucks because the retro stuff is expensive but I am ok with it knowing I have a complete product, don’t have to wait for updates, or downloads, and can get into the games rather quickly.
This is precisely why I stick to retro consoles, 100% agree with you!

Unless you have a 4k 120hz tv there is really no reason at all. I picked up the newest xbox to play the older stuff, not the newer stuff....your milage may vary!!!
@@Draftcard I have that kind of TV and I still don’t want them. I have plenty of games to last me the rest of my life. Lol I will say the PS4 Pro does look really nice on the TV. That is the most powerful console I own.
Hey Retro Bird (leaving this comment on your most recent video hoping you see it). I just wanted to say that I have been really enjoying the humor in the videos. The perfect mix of geeky and goofy humor sprinkled in at the right time. You got me to laugh out loud on a few videos and I was like, "I should probably sub to this guy". I normally dont laugh out loud like that (especially if I am by myself at the time). I am watching a few videos each day after work to catch on your other videos. Also, that ending theme song is (i mean this in the best way possible) so bad that its good... whats not to like. I appreciate the perspective you present when discussing the various topics. Cheers

As a kid entering high school, I sold my GameCube along with all of its games including the GBA player and my PSone with the official screen attachment. At the time, I just felt like we didn’t understand each other and I could see that I was no longer putting in the effort, but we found each other again as I entered University and, though we’ve definitely had our ups and downs, we are getting along just fine now! Me and my genesis, though . . . I’m not so sure.

When I was 3, I lost my Gamebou Advanced, I still wish it was there and I can still play 😢
Always been a Nintendo Kid growing up but then a commercial came out for Mortal Kombat (I think in 1992.) The Music & The Line...FINISH HIM. And then Nintendo announced they will not be like the Arcade Version, but a more family friendly game. I broke up with my Super Nintendo & just used my roommates Sega Genesis. My roommate moved out to start a band & I dusted off my old Super Nintendo with no hard feelings. Or I thought as it stopped working a month or so later. Then I dusted off my old NES & it's still with me to this day!
In my opinion I think Mortal Kombat is the best music ever to be put out by any game EVER! In the 90s I made a mix tape with that one song on both sides!
"You think you're making an upgrade" SO true. I had an SNES and I "upgraded" to a Turboduo near the end of its life. Even though some of the games were excellent, the SNES had a much better collection. I still have a soft spot for the Duo but it wasn't the upgrade I thought it was at the time.
Moving on from the snes/genesis to the PlayStation was a tough one for me but eventually you end up coming back to each other great concept retro bird thanks as always you’re appreciated
Catching up on videos here, so a bit late to the game, I broke up with everything 20 years ago when I sold everything I had for a ridiculously low amount which then started a long hiatus. Well I’m back now, starting to recollect and try to play since beginning of 2023, but I’m experiencing gaming guilt, and on the fence about getting rid of everything again. I put everything in boxes and holding off on making a decision I may regret after, eh we’ll see. Great videos! I really enjoy them!
PS4. I owned one for about a year, but the exclusives with the exception of Bloodborne didn't appeal to me, and I sold it once I built my PC.
I've been playing my PS2, my Genesis and My Sega Saturn today and yesterday because I needed a break from the new ones. As for breaking up with consoles well uhh I haven't played my Wii and Wii U for quite sometime. Now I don't like saying this but my PS4 is having the same fate. Playing the retros felt really good to play again without internet, microtransaction, updates. plus been watching anime on DVDs again as well
This happened to me with the Master System. Twice. I sold the original collection I had in the 1990s to just focus on Nintendo consoles, then started buying again in around 2016, then sold everything again because both my Master System 2s were giving me video issues. Then, finally, I became interested in the console again three years ago, and now I own 90 games. It seems this time my MS and its games are staying with me for good, and I think it's a worthy system.
Sold my N64 two years ago and 30 games. Started to find the system was unplayable. I don't miss a single thing about it.
The N64… it crushed my heart. After having been a Hardcore gamer since the early 8 bit days, the horrendously ugly 3D games were not only hurting my impeccably aesthetic taste but made games less fun than the previous generation. It wasn’t until the Gamecube/PS2 that I got back into gaming again.
Love the question. I moved back in with my parents at 19 and refused to ask for money. Got a horrible pyramid scheme job and needed some extra cash. Pawned my Gamecube along with all my games and controllers and got like $50. A couple weeks go by, find a new job waiting tables and honestly probably didn't NEED to sell it at that time. Still stings...😅
The year is 2022. I found your channel last year and finally just realized you had a color coded order for your shirts in the thumbnail based on your love of that oh-so-great gaming color pallet of red, blue, green, and yellow. We knew you liked Bananners, but this is next level. Im sure you addressed it and I forgot about it, but that’s channel commitment goals for sure.
I've alluded to it with a couple jokes here and there, but I don't really mention it. I get comments every now and then from people who say they just noticed it :) So, you're not alone.
I've never really stopped playing any of my consoles. I still have most of them from when I was a kid that weren't brutally destroyed by some heinous chance of fate. The only one I've never gone back to is my Switch. I remember getting it slightly after launch, because there weren't enough. I loved my Wii U, so I was super excited to see what it was supposed to be. And, I absolutely hated it. From the endless ports and shovelware, to the crappy controllers, to the system itself. I've never had a console crash as much as my Switch. What finally sealed the deal, is that I have a tendency to squeeze my controllers when a game gets tense. I snapped one of the joycons out of the rail, and realized I had twisted the entire console. I wanted to love it, but It's sat in my closet ever since.

Broke up with gaming in general at a time in my life when there was so much uncertainty. This was just when I moved to South Korea in 2009. I brought my PS2 and PSP with me (had been a pretty avid gamer up to that point for most mainstream systems except XBox). But from 2011 until the start of the pandemic I barely gamed. Maybe it was because I was just more interested in travel and my job, but during that time I went cold turkey on gaming.
Now that I have an established career, I have slowly re-bought and am starting to relive my consoles of yesteryear. My friends poke fun at me because I don't play anything pre-PS3, but I'm just having a blast finding some hidden gems that I haven't been exposed to when I was younger.

Had to sell it to make room for a Genesis. I haven't gotten rid of a console since.
No epic or scandalous stories here! I still play games from all different eras. And I got most of my consoles late, so money wasn't really an issue.
Closest thing to a breakup would be either temporarily shelving some of my 3D systems like N64 (where almost everything looks and plays better on emulators),
or becoming a bit apathetic towards newer generations of games and consoles, to the point that I stuck with retro games and skipped the whole 7th generation at the time, only going back later to give some of its games a try.
I sold my Genesis to raise money for a PS1 and threw out my Game Gear (and entire collection) when the screen wore out. Two of my biggest gaming regrets.
I traded my Game Gear, Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System collection to a pawn shop to get a N64. Even with all that traded in there wasn't enough to buy the 'shiny new console'
Some of those games would of been worth hundreds (each) and miss the heck that I will never play them again
Game Gear isn't that good of a system. I remember I wanted one badly after I had gotten the Gameboy because it was in color. When I played the games on it like Shinobi & Sonic I found the games were a lot better on the Gameboy.
Really the only systems I gave up on were the N64 and Dreamcast. Both are awesome machines to play with friends. They do have some great one player games. I just got tired of feeling like both systems were lacking compared to other ones that had whole libraries of fantastic one player games.
Bryan beat every single player game on the Playstation, that's why he moved on to the Nintendo 64. Legendary.
I broke up with my dreamcast and never looked back. I jumped to the og xbox and since a lot of the sega games came over to the xbox then it wasnt needed anymore. The only reason i kept my dc is because it was a present from my grandma 😢
Luckily, Ive never had console breakups! Ive sold consoles before, but I've just regretted it each time. Now, I own practically every console!
My biggest console break-up was the DS and 3DS library. I’ve been into the DS all the way back since the launch in 2004, and also loved the 3DS but eventually played basically everything on it I wanted to death and got bored of it. Kindof miss Link Between Worlds but honestly I’ve been fine otherwise, gave up my 3DS over five years ago

I had a NES, then genesis, then my little brothers got a SNES. Then I worked at Babbage’s and got a saturn on release when they showed up with the regular shipment by surprise, but then the big breakup for college, cars and romance, but the fire never went out and years later I got to experience all of the consoles I never could before and even share them with my kids, what a great ride!
For awhile I stopped playing all consoles but now I want the older consoles back now. But I just got a wii u and an xbox one x and an original xbox console
Weird. I remember when I sold my ps2 and Xbox…sold those and the games to GameStop. They both were starting to have issues working and I decided to get some money out of them before they finally gave up the ghost. Also remember when I sold my nes and a ton of games and accessories to a guy from Craigslist I met at a mall parking lot. I can still remember handing off the cardboard boxes as we loaded them into his car. The mall is now defunct. I don’t remember selling my 64 or snes and decided in the wii era to not sell any longer.
I remember going through a break up with most of console gaming at one point. I didn't get rid of any games or systems, especially knowing how much time it took to get all of that stuff. But usually I'd just get whatever the PC equivalents were or just emulated them. Really the big exception would be games I had trouble emulating like the PS3 onward, or the monster Rancher serie due to its CD swap gimmick. I was able to get into an amazing world of game that I've always wanted to play but never thought I'd get the chance to. Or heck, even just outright discovering games I've never heard of that I'd come to love.
I also really enjoyed getting to try out ROM hacks and mods for a lot of games, mainly that of the enhancement variety. I love finding ways to improve my experience with a game, and that was a huge part of why I got into PC gaming so hard. The customizability of it all was incredible. It was even during that time where I'd learn to really appreciate what a CRT can do for older games and went wild with CRT filters to try and replicate that experience.
This whole thing went on for a while. But there were some things that managed to squeeze through the cracks that eventually got me back into the collecting scene. The first instance was the want to sweep up the rest of the Monster Rancher series. I really wanted to have as many of the games as I could get my hands on with it being such a meaningful series to me, and since it was 2020 the prices were starting to look scary, so I didn't want to miss my chance. Especially since my copy of Monster Rancher 2 at the time was scratched up enough to give me trouble, and I knew that'd likely be one of the bigger targets in the series for a price spike. So I got a replacement copy of that with the case, Monster Rancher Battle Card Episode II, Monster Rancher Hop a Bout, and Monster Rancher Advance 2.
So after that I thought my whole thing was done. But not quite. At some point I was wanting to get into the PaRappa series after listening to Taste of Teriyaki and loving it. But I found myself having trouble running the games on ePSXe. So after that, I figured that I may just go ahead and get physical copies of the games given what I've heard about the PS4 Remastered version of PaRappa 1. I got US copies of Lammy and PaRappa 2 and a Japanese copy of PaRappa 1 and really enjoyed playing through the series. Although I ended up playing through them in reverse given that was the order the games arrived in. I mean hey, nothing wrong with it. It's not like I wouldn't understand the plot for PaRappa 2 without playing the first two games.
But after that when I was going for physical Wii copies of Pikmin 1 and 2 after having played the games several times over on Dolphin, I knew I was back in. I found myself purchasing a bunch of games I adored through my time with emulation and other game collections like Streets of Rage 2 Alisia Dragoon, Gunstar Heroes, and many many more. Heck, I already had the means to play some of these games officially, but I was truly back on collecting, I wanted to get some of those original copies to play on those consoles. It felt great. I had such a renewed interest in the hobby that's still going strong today. But I don't regret that collecting break. I still think it did a lot to expand my horizons and I wouldn't take it all back. Now it's a sort of balance between emulation and playing the games on that original hardware. I also still love the PC ports that I was able to get in that time as well. Being able to customize my Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 experience to be exactly how I want it is great, just like how playing the games the way they originally were on the Dreamcast is great. It certainly makes me all the more glad I never sold all that stuff off. I hope to continue enjoying this hobby for many years to come.
One thing that I learned during the last pandemic: KEEP YOUR LODER STUFF. Prices for some of the older systems was crazy.
I've kept my Gamecube and its games. I don't play it as I don't have a CRT or HDMI solution right now. Sometimes it does bother me that I never play it, or my PS2 for that matter.

As a young kid, I got an Atari 2600 (the wood-grain 4-switcher) CiB, two joysticks, and a crap-ton of games with their manuals as a hand-me-down from my older cousins who moved to Spain. I already had an NES and it may have been a year before I got an SNES (and later a Genesis) but after playing it a bunch (even E.T.), I mentally broke up with it because I felt there was no reason to ever replay any of the games. I never got rid of it and still have it (and it's even hooked up and on display) but I never bought any more games for it and I'm pretty sure I haven't touched it more than 2 or 3 times since.
I love the atari 2600 look. You can play Atari games using Genesis controllers. It is so much better than using the Atari Joystick.
@@tonyp9313 The joysticks aren't bad at all. I personally think the joysticks are a part of the charm of the system. The problem was never with the controls but the game themselves. They were mostly repetitive and just weren't fun to play after 20 mins.
@@Marc_Araujo Yeah that's cuz those games were high score games that never ended. As a kid I loved those controllers. I need percision & accuracy now, so the Genesis controllers are the best.

I had to sell my old systems to get the new ones Started with my Atari 2600. Now I’m collecting them all back.
1:05 well im giving these consoles a first chance now I just... yaknow wasnt alive back then...
But I guess im giving the wii a second chance now since I played that as a kid. Oh that breakup. That wasnt a normal breakup where I just didnt want to see it again... it was an unfortunate death. I had gotten my own personal computer and miniclip took up my interest for a while. The poor thing couldnt take the loneliness and when I went back to boot it back up again... nothing. No response. The wii was dead. You'd think after such a tragic loss id be a wiiU owner, but no never got the console.
As for my 3DS its certainly in the friend zone. Last I played it was to play metroid samus returns as I was going through that series (I gave AM2R a shot dont worry, I just got a corrupt save and figured if im starting over lets see some 3D). Though it is officially 100% friend zoned now as I got a 3D monitor I can use instead to play 3DS in HD without losing the 3D!
I broke-up with my Pioneer Laser Active + 6 LD games because it just took up so much dam space. I wanted to stream line and clean up my gaming setup so something had to go. Haven't missed it and if i ever think about getting another one, which is very seldom. I remember how much space it took up and the thought goes away immediately.
In '05, I broke up with my GBA and moved on to the PSP. Then like a couple years later, got my PSP hacked and got back into some of my favorite GBA and NES games. Being able to play WarioWare on the PSP was mind-blowing. My eyes were opened. I couldn't wait to see what all home console games I could take with me anywhere. Instead of taking reworked NES games for the Game Boy, I could take the actual NES ones, no cartridges required! It was nuts and I was happy :D
I actually have GBA and a GB/C/Game Gear/Master System emulators on my PSP without hacking it.
moving from my Saturn to Dreamcast was tough. it was never the same.
Gave my PS2/games to my younger brother/kids after getting a 360 & PS3 and being dazzled by the HD graphics then sent them that PS3 and bought another because it had problems playing some of my newer games several years later. As time went on I realized I missed some of my top down Action RPGs and JRPGs from the prior gen but no longer had a way to play them since my newer PS3 was not backwards compatible :-( Since then I have always kept my older consoles.
The PS3 is obsolete now. I sold that console years ago with my games.
@@tonyp9313PS1 definitely is since every PS2/PS3 system is backwards compatible with it. There are a few games I have that are exclusive to PS3 that have not been remastered or available for DL elsewhere so I keep it around (Folklore, Dark Kingdom, Resistance 1-3, Lair, Little Big Planet 1/2, White Knight Chronicles 1/2, Heavenly Sword, 3D dot Game Heroes, Killzone 1/2). Pretty much all non exclusive 3rd party games (Exception being FFXIIIs) run and look better on 360 so have been re-purchasing on it the last couple years since they are dirt cheap with half being backwards compatible on my XB1S. For Birthdays/Christmas I actively collect and gift them to a friend of mine who only has a PS3 console (PC gamer) primarily for his kid.
X-box 360, I played it a lot and so I went through three of them (one they covered on guarantee). When the last one quit on me, I bought a PS3 instead (which I still play from time to time) 😅
My own story is that I sold my Sega Saturn and entire collection of about 30+ games, some of which are incredibly rare now, for a PS2. I cry about it to this day as I will never afford to get those games back. I do own a Saturn again as it is my favourite console of all time, but a large number of those games are now forever out of my reach :(
there is a big gap in my gaming life, causing me to miss out on the Wii U initially, but glad I discovered it later on. I do regret selling all my SNES game to get N64 games, that was the breakup, but thankfully my retro collecting allowed to reclaim almost all the ones I wanted, some are just too pricey to own though.
I lost my 3Ds in 2020 I plan on reviving it one day like Frankenstein.
The wii was my break-up console with Nintendo.. it was '05 & I was a freshman in HS. I was more hyped than ever at the potential & long story short I was pretty disappointed. There were a few good games but I was very excited for metroid prime 3 which was supposed to be a launch title but they delayed it with no announcement 😕
During the post on this subject I talked about breaking up with my Sega CD model 2 and ALMOST breaking up with my New 3DS XL. Afterwards I started thinking a little bit, and I might do the same with my GameCube. Not because I don't like playing GameCube games of course I still have plenty of those, but because the Wii can play GameCube games just as well. Only reason I still have my GameCube is for the Game Boy Player but I might end up getting a consolized GBA as a standalone console so selling my GameCube makes more sense after that.
Switch renewed my love of gaming. Lost the lust around the 360/ps3 era but it’s back baby!
Me and my Pegasus, the famiclone my parents got for me when there was nothing but famiclones available in my country, have been through our ups and downs. To be fair, I had some affairs with younger ones, and in revenge it played dead for a bit just to spite me, but we stayed together for thirty years. Our love has just been rejuvenated as I got it a bootleg Dragon Quest collection (there was nothing but bootlegs in my country at the time, so it's the way to do it for this console), and we're going through our second honeymoon. I never even considered selling it, and so we've been together for thirty odd years, still going strong. I even kept all the cartridges I had for it, and they all still work. The N64 on the other hand - the breakup was nasty, sudden and left a hole in my heart that I'm only now rediscovering...
Well I dug an old N64 out of the attic along with a Genesis and NES. The N64 is the only system I havent really played since.
So many games relied on multiplayer to be enjoyable and I'm not a big fan of platformers, especially 3D ones. It just feels like an obsolete console to me and it makes me sad because it was a lot of fun in the heyday of couch co-op.
That's a good take. I probably enjoyed n64 the most growing up. Goldeneye, Blitz, Mario Kart in couch coop. But it's just not the same revisiting alone as an adult.
I broke up with my n64 and went back to my ps1. I cheated on my genesis and spent time once again with my nes, genesis never knew about it.
You know, I remember my first "console" was the gameboy color. Yes I know it is a handheld, but I got it before I could even read. It wasn't until I was 7 years old that I got my gamecube (and fell in love). But the sad part is, my gameboy color ended up getting left in the walmart when i put it down on a shelf and forgot it. By far the worst break up.
haha,funny because I was the opposite.I was super excited the get the N64,LOVED Super Mario 64,played the heck out of it.but then when I moved on to other games I found the N64 library lacking.and then Final Fantasy 7 was announced as A Playstation exclusive and that was the death nail for the N64 in my house.traded it in after 6 months for A playstation and never regretted it.the Playstation was an RPG lovers dream.
kept them almost entirely, only one i ever sold was a atari 2600 but then years down the line i got it later.
Growing up right around GameStop's trade-in heyday it was nearly a given that any older games and consoles would go into funding our next one. The exceptions being earlier handhelds and systems where they would not accept them or would give nearly nothing. So as.a result most of my playstation 2 and Xbox 360 libraries are long gone but I have a fair bit of Gameboy Advance titles.
Giving it a thought, I did recently part with my PS3. I liked it for Gran Turismo, but I didn't have more than 2 games for it and had no room for a system that wasn't being used, so out it went.
I m breaking up with my ps5. Just fed up with it. So sticking to my xbox series x.
I've friend zoned the ps1, ps2 and ps3 at this point. Pretty much friend zoned the switch too since the switch lite I have has that battery meter issue and shuts off from "full charge" after about 4 or 5 minutes... happily picked up the steam deck though and that's handling my current gen handheld gaming for me :)
I'm having a pretty rocky breakup with my switch now that I have a steam deck.
It was '93. I'd had SNES for a year and LOVED her, but I suppose I had a wandering eye because Genesis was so alluring with her purported speed and maturity. I didn't come from money, so I had to get a job if I wanted things, and Genesis kept calling, so instead of getting a new game or two for SNES that year (as I probably should have), I saved up and bought Genesis home.
Flash forward to '95 and I'd only ever have two Genesis games, but even with rentals I was focusing on SNES; Genesis and I had a fling, but I was filled with regret and went back to my dear Super Nintendo within months.
We'd become good friends about 20 years later, Genesis and I, but by this point, she'd changed her name (and look) to CDX; we've been close ever since.
The other notable one that comes to mind was with N64. I got one, was thoroughly disappointed in every respect (just not the one for me) and said to myself, "I wish I'd gone with Saturn.'; Saturn and I have been besties ever since ;)

It was never my favorite, but I miss my old Virtual Boy. Other than my PS1 (which I gifted to my brother when I got a PS2) it's the only system I've owned that I don't still have today. I had left it behind with a lot of my childhood toys when I moved out of my parent's house at 18; years later, when I had a bigger place and came back to collect it all, I learned that most of my old stuff had gotten mingled with my little brother's toys and was sold at a garage sale! I wasn't too bothered at the time, but as time has gone by I think more and more about the small fortune of games, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man figures, etc. that my mom probably let go for a total of $25.
For me, my first console break up was my folks getting a Sega Genesis for me when I had an NES. Thing was they had to get rid of the NES for it. Looking back, I regret not having an NES, but i had great memories with the Genesis. First time as an adult? Getting rid of my XBOX 360
My biggest break up was my Atari 2600 collection that my brother lost and it killed me , so it’s like she left me and I never had closure. Other consoles I’ve broken up with is snes and Xbox, which I’ve own and played some games but never had deep connection to so it was just easy to not collect and say bye. I did have a small break with my genesis and since getting back together, we will never part
I had to breakup with my console collection because of college. My family was going thru a rough time and I had to pay tuition. Since then I just emulate my game collection instead of buying a new console.
I am currently going through this with Xbox 360 and everything newer. X360 is the biggest part of my collection with over 500 games..... that I'll never play. So, I figure it's time to sell probably half of the physical games. It won't be easy to decide on toasting 150 games. Maybe I'll do a TH-cam channel and get an audience to help me decide!

When I was about 7 or 8 we had a super nintendo. And we were one of those families at the time that could only afford 1 console at a time and if we wanted the newest thing at the time it meant selling our current console to help pay for the new 1. Well I think we ended up selling the super nintendo to get a PS1 and after that I never had or played another actual Super Nintendo for like 22 or 23 years. Didn't mean I hated the thing, I actually loved that console because it had my favorite Zelda of all time, and I just loved the 2D sprites that console seemed to have. But for whatever reason buying another 1 when I got older just never crossed my mind if I felt like getting retro games I usually just bought the ones I never had as a kid. Well a few months ago I started actually trying to collect as much as I could and about a week ago I finally got reunited with a Super Nintendo again and I'm loving it. I'm going back and getting all the Super Nintendo games I had as a kid that I haven't played in over 20yrs.....along with a few new ones.
I broke up with my NES when a new love entered my life. The Genesis! We were separated for nearly 27 years before finding each other again one emulated night.
I have a different sort of break up story. It really pertains to handhelds, but I'm finding as I get older that my eyes are going, and even with new glasses, I just can't play some handhelds as easily as I used to. Thankfully, some of them have ways to be played on TVs like the old Game Boy games. I've had to give up on games for things like the Neo Geo Pocket Color though (the games on the eShop are nice and all, but that handheld has an amazing clicky d-pad thing that can not be replicated on the Switch), and even my PSP forced me to go out and buy adapter cables so I could play on my TV. It really makes me sad because I love handheld gaming, and so many great games are locked on these systems, but I just had to break up with them because I can't see well enough to play on them comfortably anymore. This does make me extra glad that some stuff is getting ported and remastered to modern consoles lately, but it will never be everything I want, so it has me looking at emulation more and more lately, so I can get these games on bigger screens, which makes me sad in a way too. I feel like I'm taking myself out of the collecting space by doing that, but I suppose I'll just have to find a good balance. Oh well, I've rambled on enough here. That's my story for this, and I'm curious if anyone else has had to do this, or found good workarounds.
I had a TG16 in its heyday and held it to this day. However I sold all my games about 15 years ago and instantly regretted it.
I broke up with Xbox a long time ago, I was Playstation since PS2, now I have made the switch to The Switch.
Console breakups happened a lot when I was younger - the worst was when I was roped into my younger brother's breakup with the family's Wii - though in recent years they've been replaced with first dates that I've yet to get around to, like with the PlayStation 2 and - to a lesser extent - the PlayStation 1.
My break up with the DS Lite has been around since day one. I buy a system, feel the controls, start playing for a minute and just loose interest (rinse and repeat). There's something about that system that gets me aggravated. Even when I converted one to a macro it just felt wrong. This dead end relationship is something I'll never get over.
I stopped playing handheld because the screens were too small (ended up selling my DS)... Until they weren't. The Switch finally got me back into handheld gaming and Now I have a Steam Deck which is perfect.
Is it the system itself, or do the games not hold your interest?
I find that the DS Lite is literally painful to play- it's too small for my hands, and the sharp edges dig into my palms. Plus I greatly prefer console/PC gaming over handheld.
But it has some great games, so I'm looking into emulation for any further DS gaming.
@@3dmarth It's probably just the comfort and games. I mean the original DS felt okay, but the Lite and XL I could not enjoy.
I REALLY don't do gaming console breakups TBH. But I will say that PS4 definitely fits into that. I bought it 2 months after I got my Switch on launch day, but I don't really use it. I might as well sell it and get a Series S or something. But at the same time, it's really due to me not being completely interested in modern mainstream gaming.
But it also really boils down to my time with gaming as a whole since life has become extremely busy for me and nowadays, I hardly have the time for gaming due to working crazy hours at my job.
The Saturn and Dreamcast, those 2 dying young had me lost both times. First I just split the time between ps1 (psx) and n64, then DC rescued me. Second when DC died I floated around owning all the systems until I could confidently say that the og xbox was my home when xbox live launched. I always buy all the systems but each gen I have a favorite.

The Xbox 360! I had two previously, and now I have a black slim model. I mostly have it for the games that are on there that currently haven't been ported to modern platforms like Steam and the Switch.
So I first broke up with my NES because I wanted the newer systems. I almost broke up with my Neo Geo AES because it broke, but I fixed it and we are still together and happy.
When the ps2 came out I tried so hard to breakup with my ps1, but the ps1 was modded and just wouldn’t shut up about it. When I got my ps2 I told the ps1 that it was best if we go our separate ways, but of course it would look up at me with the open disc tray and go on and on about it being modded and how I had dozens of burnt ps1 games that the ps2 couldn’t handle. Eventually I shoved it away into a box with a case of burnt games. However, I could never entirely let go, every once and a while opening the box and staring at the ps1 while it would say to me “ha! Ready to come back to me?” And I would just shake my head and close it back up. Very painful and protracted breakup that neither of us have fully recovered from.
My breakup is also an unbelievable one. Its with the xbox 360. When I had one, it got the RROD and I sent it to Microsoft to fix it. However, my system got broken in shipping on the way back to me. That is when I decided to go with the PS3 in that generation. It wasn't until I got a Series X that I decided to play some 360 games on it.
The only breakup I've ever really had with a console is when my Xbox 360 red-ringed 3 times. Microsoft repaired it for free twice, but then when it broke the 3rd time I said screw this and bought a PS3. I've since kinda gotten back together with it since my wife has an Xbox One-X that has some backwards compatibility, but I regret selling off most of my games. Oh well
Back in the day I sold my NES and my collection of 10 games to buy a Turbographx. While the TG was a great system and I had some good times with Splatterhouse, I didn't have as much fun as with the NES and quickly realized that I made a mistake. Haven't sold any of my systems or games since.
