That's because Cover Girl is a commercial brand when at the time was only hiring actresses and or ordinary models... cycle 15 was geared for high fashion and vogue where a gap is favored... all Tyra was doing was trying to mold the contestants to the prizes and winning agency

Because Tyra was a commercial model and they need more approachable and safe looks. High Fashion models,have interesting and cool haircuts. The thing with wigs on photoshoots is that they can look cheap,like part of a costume. They're selling fashion,not fantasy.

soccer 11 it seems like many models and actors are required to make some permanent changes , placing veneers, or something, alter their noses, enhance their lips etc. That's just showbiz, and it's upsetting that they're paid millions for ruining young's life and promoting unauthentic and unrealistic beauty.

She was the one with alopecia and they promised her a wig but made her wear a shaved head even though the winner got a Pantene contract. So she knew at that point she was never going to win but be strung along.
Consent is no defense for harming someone’s dental health. Shaving off teeth like that can cause hypersensitivity or even pain and increased risk of tooth decay
Totally. In season 6, Dani (winner) had a gap and they made her get it closed (somewhat). Now they want you to have a gap lol. I understand how fashion changes. No way I can be a model. I paid $7,000 for my braces. I ain't going back lol.

As far as I can remember (currently rewatching all the cycles on Hulu up to 22), outside of whitening there were only four contestants who had dental makeovers shown on the show. Norelle (Cycle 3): Braces Removed Dani (Cycle 6 winner-Danielle): Tooth gap closed (enough to look proportionate) Joanie (Cycle 6 runner-up): Tooth extraction and veneers Chelsey (Cycle 15 runner up): Tooth gap widened.
I have never watched ANTM, but all of these makeovers were hideous. Changing one's hair is bad enough, but to allow a dentist to grind off one's teeth - WTH??? I would have never agreed to that, no matter how badly I wanted to win. I'm surprised she didn't sue.

I do not like the attitude the stylist gave the first girl all because she didn't want to get her hair cut even shorter. Being a model should be about displaying your unique beauty not forcing other's to conform to what you think is beautiful and then kicking them out because they don't want to conform to your stupid beauty rules.
true story bro, and it takes ages to grow them back the way they were before. I cut my hair off too and growing it back since a year now it takes so long and it costs a lot of money to cut it regularly so it doesn't look like shit inbetween lenghts.
usually, designers hire models that are already close to the Picture they want to create. so cutting her hair off radically like that has nothing to do with a designer wanting his model to look a certain way, it's just hair butchering. who says her look wouldn't have gotten some interest by good designers already who want a natural look or a big nice hair style?
That dentist should've been struck off, I can't believe a qualified, professional dentist actually agreed to creating a bigger gap in her front teeth, I'm also confused as she sent that other girl a few years ago to get her gap closed because they said it was ruining the way she spoke! At least with hair, eyebrows etc they grow back.
Actually it was only like a difference of about four/five years between Dani's tooth gap fix of Cycle 6 verses Chelsey's tooth gap widen of Cycle 15. By the time Cycle 6 rolled around, ANTM was pushing out two cycles a year. But yes, that was probably the biggest part of the whole tooth controversy.
Everything all looks so cheap, so tacky. And while weave can be removed and hair can grow out, ain't nobody permanently altering my TEETH! Especially considering this show, through 465,938,383 seasons, has launched ZERO CAREERS.
Jenna Leigh's Beauty Slam ANTM has launched plenty of careers to varying levels of success. Just very few “top models.” Leila Goldkuhl from cycle 19 is one of the top ranked high fashion models in the world. Dani Evans and Fatima Siad have also been very successful. The list could go on. I’m not condoning these awful makeovers by any means though. If you want to watch a Top Model series that isn’t absolutely ridiculous, does good makeovers, and churns out successful models, check out the Australian cycles.
You should check out some of the shows performing make overs on regular people. The top model crew is polite & nurturing by comparison. And at least the models are getting (mostly) useful feedback & exposure for their careers. I don't watch alot of these shows regularly, but what I have seen is like "if you wear this, change your hair, you look more _____ & we believe that to be more marketable because _____" vs "guuuurrrl! No wonder you unemployed & no one wants to f*ck you! Do you get high & dress in the dark? Why can't you see that you look like sh*t?"

And this lady was just super sweet. These a'holes had her crying for most of the episode. Ok, her long, bleach blond poofy Texas hair needed some help, but they chopped it WAY to short & dyed it red & it wasn't even particularly flattering. She was devastated! Then they spend the rest of the show either ignoring her trauma or dismissing it. "This what we deal with!" Jerks. I was glad to see at the end of the show she recolored it & got extensions on her own & looked happy again. (I bet a nice honey blonde & a few inches shorter would've been adorable on her, btw - but it still looked so much better than what they did.) Anywhoo, it's the only time I've written into a reality show to tell them off. You can be honest without humiliating someone on national television...
The stylists on this show are so awful. The tooth gap was horrific. They really abuse the girls on this show. I don't watch it anymore becasue I could not bear how they used and mistreated the girls. It seems to be the norm in the fashion industry to abuse models. In the fine arts world, such abuse would never be tolerated by respected artists or art institutions. They are the opposite, they do everything in their power to show respect to models.
Teeth should be off limits...Tyra..would have never let some one mess with her teeth. They ruined that chicks teeth..and that also made them weaker...forever. Never...let someone mess with your teeth...unless it's between you and your personal dentist.
+Sugar Plum Uh you do know that shaving the gap, means shaving the enamel protecting the root. Right? The biggest thing protecting the root. Thinner enamel, less protection. And enamel doesn't grow back. And teeth aren't that big so a millimeter shaved off is a lot of protection gone.
For some people growing hair back is possible but for some black women it literally takes years and years to grow back a short amount and it doesn’t always come back the same. So, yes, it is a big deal.
I agree. Watching it back now I'm realising it was a form of abuse. These contestants were often poor, uneducated, naive and vulnerable and they trusted Tyra. She was like a cruel jealous stepmother towards them, giving the worst makeovers to the prettiest of them.

To give red, white and blue that one girl to represent the USA flag on an American show is one thing. However, it comes across as a stupid move if you're doing it for a competition between British and USA contestants. Did no-one on the USA team look at the British flag???? BOTH countries proudly use the colours red, white and blue! I remember watching it with my friends, we were really amused and mildly confused how the production team didn't pick up on it.
True, but this competition was between the USA and UK, to not only use something that represents both to show your country pride but make a fuss about it just makes the girl and her team look a little stupid. Someone on the production staff should have realised and maybe steered the girl to clothing, hair decoration or make-up of stars and stripes if they wanted flag representation.
Model agencies should make the most of a girl's assets, such as nice white teeth or beautiful long, thick hair. In reality, I doubt very much if an agency would ruin a model's natural look in these kinds of ways. This show is an example of Narcissistic media people thinking that they rule the world. It is not OK to ask a reality show's contestants to radically change their look, just because of some media mogul's whim. And it should be illegal to ask someone to have their teeth permanently altered. If you want to be on a reality show, people, read the small print, and stand up for your rights! Because the TV show hosts do not care about anything but ratings.
I must be the only person on the planet who thought Saleisha’s bob looked decent. Not the best makeover, but fine. Also I never blamed Molly for being pissed; it looked painful and ridiculous.
I’ve done half and half hair twice. I don’t get what’s wrong with it? She actually looks really good with the hair. The eyebrows may have been better for just a picture and not permanent but she still looked great with those too.

That is kinda the point though. I don't think a brand would make you look as bad as some of them but as a model they have to be prepared to cut their hair however they're told. Just as a actor has to gain or lose weight depending on the role.

Models aren't asked to cut their hair randomly. They may put weaves in or wear wigs but the stuff Tyra comes up with is absurd and unnecessary. I don't think it's about modeling but a test to see how far they're willing to go.
I remember seeing Jaeda's photo and thinking she looked GORGEOUS with the short hair 😍 she just needed to embrace that androgyny... She went from meh to Stunner real quick.

(which we now know takes about 6 months JUST for the implant to take to the jaw bone.. so in total.. we're talking a full year to do it correctly! I don't think they were 'shaved' down and redone.. but still.. THAT takes alot of time.)...But they made the poor girl get it done without a break .. think she was awake and it took 18 HOURS to get it done! THEN.. made her go to that day's shoot, and they were bitching that "she wasn't talking right" throughout the season. Uugh!!!! That IS SUCH MEDICAL MALPRACTICE.. and her teeth weren't THAT BAD! They totally could've done something different! I'm sure they also failed to tell her that because there's no real nerves from real teeth anymore, that her jawbone WILL SHRINK overtime. The horse weave would've looked good if they hadn't cut it like a mullet.. A long mohawk looks cool, plus it's pretty versatile. And the first "dishonorable mention" was actually super cute. She may have disliked the cut, but it definitely didn't look bad. And as for the patriotic makeover, the streaks were just on clip-ins it looks like, so at least she could just take them out. She looks good blonde. I will echo what everyone else is saying on the tooth gap though: that shit is fucked up. They better be paying for her dental bills for the rest of her life if they're going to do shit like that to her. Even though she "chose" to go ahead with it, she was pressured into it. I mean, look at how they kicked that one girl out just for not cutting another inch off her hair. Ridiculous.

And when i do get my hair cut. It's time for me. And some people have a huge attachment to their hair. And when it's not time.... It's not time. Buttuhcup My young daughter had phenomenal, long blonde hair. Then, she wanted it cut to within an inch of its life. All the girls in the salon were too afraid to cut it so the amazing male salon owner did it. 1O years later and again long...all the hairdressers in town would watch her pass by hoping one day, they'd get the chance to work on it. One got to. Brilliant hair designer. Amazing style, transformation. Just saying.
When I used to watch ANTM, Tyra use to introduce the hair stylist as some big name company that all of the celebrity go to but then one of the contestants would be given a botched hair cut/ style. I know for a fact no celebrity has been given a crappy weave like poor Molly got. After seeing that episode, I swore to myself that I would never go to any “Top” hair stylist that was mentioned on this show.
I feel like Tyra did not protect the girl it almost seemed like she was playing the part of mean girl, Tyra definitely crossed the line. Making the girls tuff for the business is one thing but humiliating and butchering them like that for ratings is very sad.... clearly Miss Banks has issues.
agree later seasons it seemed to become more about getting a reaction from the contestants than making them more marketable for their profession. But 1 of the criticisms of the show is that they've not exactly helped make/discover any superstar models like a Gisele Bundchen or Adriana Lima. The only 1 that I've ever seen with an actual 'model' job post-show is Danielle and that's on NY& Company's website as a catalog model.

@@yespls4184 They did it to make good tv. We all loved makeover days to see the good ones and bad ones. A former contestant Jeana did a youtube video explaining her experiences. She was the one with alopecia and they promised her a wig but made her wear a shaved head even though the winner got a Pantene contract. So she knew at that point she was never going to win but be strung along.
The tooth one is completely unethical. Dentist should refuse.

As far as I can remember (currently rewatching all the cycles on Hulu up to 22), outside of whitening there were only four contestants who had dental makeovers shown on the show.

Dani (Cycle 6 winner-Danielle): Tooth gap closed (enough to look proportionate)
Joanie (Cycle 6 runner-up): Tooth extraction and veneers
Chelsey (Cycle 15 runner up): Tooth gap widened.
She didn't have to do it though, she agreed to it.

Widening the teeth is beyond hypocritical. All throughout season 6, Tyra lambasted Danielle and Joanie for their gap and snaggle tooth, respectively. She even had them go to the dentist to have them corrected. But then she sends a girl to MAKE a tooth gap? What the living hell?????

Although i agree it's ridiculous to widen someone's gap for a stupid reality tv show, I don't see it as hypocritical to do both widening and closing gaps. If they're going to do one style they might as well do the other. Different people suit different things.
I do not like the attitude the stylist gave the first girl all because she didn't want to get her hair cut even shorter. Being a model should be about displaying your unique beauty not forcing other's to conform to what you think is beautiful and then kicking them out because they don't want to conform to your stupid beauty rules.

true story bro, and it takes ages to grow them back the way they were before. I cut my hair off too and growing it back since a year now it takes so long and it costs a lot of money to cut it regularly so it doesn't look like shit inbetween lenghts.
usually, designers hire models that are already close to the Picture they want to create. so cutting her hair off radically like that has nothing to do with a designer wanting his model to look a certain way, it's just hair butchering. who says her look wouldn't have gotten some interest by good designers already who want a natural look or a big nice hair style?

Actually it was only like a difference of about four/five years between Dani's tooth gap fix of Cycle 6 verses Chelsey's tooth gap widen of Cycle 15. By the time Cycle 6 rolled around, ANTM was pushing out two cycles a year. But yes, that was probably the biggest part of the whole tooth controversy.
Everything all looks so cheap, so tacky. And while weave can be removed and hair can grow out, ain't nobody permanently altering my TEETH! Especially considering this show, through 465,938,383 seasons, has launched ZERO CAREERS.

Just very few “top models.” Leila Goldkuhl from cycle 19 is one of the top ranked high fashion models in the world. Dani Evans and Fatima Siad have also been very successful. The list could go on. I’m not condoning these awful makeovers by any means though. If you want to watch a Top Model series that isn’t absolutely ridiculous, does good makeovers, and churns out successful models, check out the Australian cycles.

You should check out some of the shows performing make overs on regular people. The top model crew is polite & nurturing by comparison. And at least the models are getting (mostly) useful feedback & exposure for their careers.
I don't watch alot of these shows regularly, but what I have seen is like "if you wear this, change your hair, you look more _____ & we believe that to be more marketable because _____" vs "guuuurrrl! No wonder you unemployed & no one wants to f*ck you! Do you get high & dress in the dark? Why can't you see that you look like sh*t?"

The stylists on this show are so awful. The tooth gap was horrific. They really abuse the girls on this show. I don't watch it anymore becasue I could not bear how they used and mistreated the girls. It seems to be the norm in the fashion industry to abuse models. In the fine arts world, such abuse would never be tolerated by respected artists or art institutions. They are the opposite, they do everything in their power to show respect to models.

Model agencies should make the most of a girl's assets, such as nice white teeth or beautiful long, thick hair. In reality, I doubt very much if an agency would ruin a model's natural look in these kinds of ways. This show is an example of Narcissistic media people thinking that they rule the world. It is not OK to ask a reality show's contestants to radically change their look, just because of some media mogul's whim. And it should be illegal to ask someone to have their teeth permanently altered. If you want to be on a reality show, people, read the small print, and stand up for your rights! Because the TV show hosts do not care about anything but ratings.

Models aren't asked to cut their hair randomly. They may put weaves in or wear wigs but the stuff Tyra comes up with is absurd and unnecessary. I don't think it's about modeling but a test to see how far they're willing to go.

The horse weave would've looked good if they hadn't cut it like a mullet.. A long mohawk looks cool, plus it's pretty versatile. And the first "dishonorable mention" was actually super cute. She may have disliked the cut, but it definitely didn't look bad. And as for the patriotic makeover, the streaks were just on clip-ins it looks like, so at least she could just take them out. She looks good blonde.

Yeah if it was a pure white that would be fantastic. The look is super different and defiantly makes her stand out. It pushes the boundaries in the right way.

I NEVER understood why Tyra kept trying to force (Season 6 winner) Dani Evans to close her natural Lauren Hutton-esque tooth gap, then forced Chelsey to get hers widened. You can't have it both ways.

Me, too. I cannot understand why they would ask someone to do that. Also, I feel they could use weave or wigs rather than demanding the girls cut their hair because if I didn't win I'd be really ticked if I submitted to their demands.
Tyra used these girls like they were her dolls. It didn't matter how ridiculous. She seemed to actually punish the "pageant girls," by demeaning them, almost always cutting all their hair off!

I actually really liked Shei's hair (the eyebrows were to far though). Also how could you forget the mullet Ava got in Cycle 22 or when they gave Kari ice blonde hair and made her look like an alien

Phil's makeover turned out to be his signature look. He's still a working model now and he kept his hair like that. The weave might be terrible but at least they gave him that idea.

Buttuhcup My young daughter had phenomenal, long blonde hair. Then, she wanted it cut to within an inch of its life. All the girls in the salon were too afraid to cut it so the amazing male salon owner did it. 1O years later and again long...all the hairdressers in town would watch her pass by hoping one day, they'd get the chance to work on it. One got to. Brilliant hair designer. Amazing style, transformation. Just saying.
When I used to watch ANTM, Tyra use to introduce the hair stylist as some big name company that all of the celebrity go to but then one of the contestants would be given a botched hair cut/ style. I know for a fact no celebrity has been given a crappy weave like poor Molly got. After seeing that episode, I swore to myself that I would never go to any “Top” hair stylist that was mentioned on this show.

I feel like Tyra did not protect the girl it almost seemed like she was playing the part of mean girl, Tyra definitely crossed the line. Making the girls tuff for the business is one thing but humiliating and butchering them like that for ratings is very sad.... clearly Miss Banks has issues.
agree later seasons it seemed to become more about getting a reaction from the contestants than making them more marketable for their profession. But 1 of the criticisms of the show is that they've not exactly helped make/discover any superstar models like a Gisele Bundchen or Adriana Lima. The only 1 that I've ever seen with an actual 'model' job post-show is Danielle and that's on NY& Company's website as a catalog model.
