Fr, this is something personal. It's something that's a part of you. If a stylist can't work with what you got and they have to take away so much then they're shitty stylists. K Aaron I didn't know she had a talk show so I based my comment on what I saw on ANTM 🤷♀️ And actually that's not even about weaves or not, but the contrast between this grown woman wearing long voluminous hair 99% of the time pressuring young ladies to like their shaved heads. Not every woman has the strengh and confidence to wear really short hair and always seeing Tyra with long hair gave me the feeling that even her wouldnt be confident enough to do so. But these girls had to accept it because it's "the opportunity of a lifetime". And that makes me uncomfortable.
- Tulliae not every woman is cut out to model. Tyra already has things that make her stand out. She's already a success. Her image is already iconic it wouldn't make sense for her established brand to cut her hair. The cuts she chooses for her models are about setting them up to cultivate their own distinctive style so they they can have the best chance to build themselves up as Tyra already has

Cutting people's hair is such a psychological thing, and Tyra did it intentionally because she was jealous and loves to torment other girls. This show was very toxic, didn't prove anything about the modeling world.

@@SayY0 No Tyra was behind the makeovers. Miss J and Jay Manuel say Tyra decided the makeovers and they tried to discourage makeovers they disagreed with (i.e. Jael getting a weave @2:30). It's her show after all and she's executive producer. I've heard repeatedly that everything had to go through her and Ken Mok, they made the final decisions.

Some of these meltdowns were justified. The “professional stylists” did some really bad styles.
I only saw two that worked. These stylists were aweful. But some of those cuts were actually in hair magazines at the salons. Lol.

You're so right about white hair not being able to handle tight cornrow or weave. I had a friend put in 3 cornrows on the side of my head, and my scalp went all red and I was in a lot of pain. Shes a black girl and was honestly urprised how much it hurt me and how red it made my scalp. So we both learned that lesson that day lol.
There are different hair textures for white hair as well. Scandinavian hair -blond, thin, and without much volume- cant handle rows. Thicker blond hair, particulary when there is a lot of it could potentially work because there is more to braid and more to sew the weave into.
Those girls should host a reunion, gang up on Tyra and give her the stupid Rosemary's baby/Twiggy's pixie cuts she was so obsessed with, but never had the backbone to get it for herself.

It is called modeling. They were investing in them to fit and build a brand. They go through many changes because of hair because they are working w/ someone that has a vision for their clothing or product. A model is a live action doll to compliment a product, the person creating has a right to see their vision come to life as they saw fit

Mi Gi I remember watching that scene when it actually aired for the first time and it was so cringey. I felt disrespected for her. They didn’t even have the right kind of clippers to shave her head. She ended up having to fix it herself. Tyra, as a black woman, should have known better but then again this is all of her song anyway. I dnt think she a happy person so she wants to make the younger prettier girls miserable too.

I agree and this is coming from someone that cuts her hair off all the time. You have to use the right products and take care of black hair also. My hair grows fast but I experience constant breaking and shedding the longer it grows which is why I maintain short hair styles. Our hair is naturally dry and prone to breakage but that was my choice. No one forced me into it.

Please don't bring that stereotype 😖 People's hair on average grows around six inches a year. People typically get long hair with 3-5 years. I watched a lot of natural hair journeys and on average it takes that amount of time. Also shrinkage adds to that, of course.

Tyra needs to stop forcing weaves onto thin and sensitive heads. Not many Caucasian women can physically hold a weave in their hair (unless it's thick thick hair) so Tyra is literally breaking their hair.

Pixie hair doesn't look on anyone. At best, it looks ok (.e. Halle Berry).
I feel especially bad for Molly. It looked like the work of a cosmetology student using her to complete their training hours.
That weave was awful.
That was a VERY bad weave. They should have given her a perm, then given her a vixen sew in. Heck, even a full sew-in with a 360° closure would have been better than the atrocity they gave her.
Yeah... I've had my hair done by students mostly because it's cheaper the first time it was awful! I got about 6-7 inches cut off, enough to donate. The stylist didn't take into consideration that my hair is curly and when it's dry it is shorter like by an inch or so and the shoulder lenghth cut that I wanted became some weird looking thing that went to my ears and looked like something someone would have in the 50s. The stylist said that 'oh I can straighten it' I don't always have time to do that also I don't think you're supposeed to do that kind of thing to your hair everyday. The last few times it was fine got exactly what I wanted, it was great then again it was done by a friend who I could trust.
For real. I had never realized how bad these weaves are in this show. They look ratty and matted.
I am a cosmetologist and trust me, I have seen so much worse in school. Sad, but true. On the other hand, I have seen students do so much better than what Molly ended up with
It’s frustrating to see how much they do not care about these girls feelings I mean hair is hair and can grow back but it plays a huge part in our identity🙄

Makeover day ends up making Tyra look like a sadistic hypocrite. A wig would have suited many of the young ladies just fine, and it would have spared the health of their roots and edges.
What does Tyra care, she treats them like toys she bought with a little promise at fame and fortune. None of the "models" she produced became famous or have huge amounts of fortune and yet they get so many contestants still so she treats them like dirt while having a huge smile and acting wise for the cameras.

i know right, it feels like some kind of initiation ritual: even something as small as forcing them to cut their hair or else they'll be forced out of the competition. at first they teach them they have no control on how they look and that it's up to other people to change their appearance, then it all escalates..
I stopped watching this show ages ago. Tyra's flippant indifference to the young contestants' psychological well-being was repulsive to me. These women are barely post-adolescent, & just discovering who they are, & forming their identity.. Treating them like a collection of your personal Barbies, whose appearance you can manipulate to suit your personal whims, is unethical. When you look at top models, very few of them made their name with either an absurd, fake-looking weave, or, with extreme, hacked off hair. Tyra, herself, never wears her own hair at all, in preference for overly thick, often phony-looking blonde wigs. These 'makeovers' seem more about shock value & sensationalism than about modeling.
Tyra stated that she was a bully in school. She clearly never outgrew it & used her show as a way to spread her anger & hate.
I just grew disinterested in the show after s while
Tyra needs to realize that NOT ALL HAIR TYPES CAN HANDLE A WEAVE!!!!!!! Molly’s hair was way too thin, way to straight for braids to even hold up, so obviously the weave was an awful idea from the start.

Imagine having to cut off hair that you've been growing for years just because someone else says so! an bc someone else says it's cute. IT'S MY HEAD. everyone thinks it's "cute" except the person that's getting the cut. even if it is cute if they don't feel confident of better yet, comfortable then then u can't force that! That's an issue ! Then you get sent home if u don't obey. Imagine doing all that JUST to not win and get sent home.
When I turned 36 I went home to visit my parents and I saw high school photos of my senior year and realized I hadn't really changed my "look" in nearly 20 years. I decided to get a short sassy cut in order to embrace my getting older. The woman at the salon kept asking me "Are you sure you, are you ABSOLUTELY sure?". I had walked in with hair just above my shoulders and I was about to get a dramatic cut (very similar to the one Fo had actually). I replied with "Yeah, don't worry, I can handle it. It's just hair and it will grow back". She did a GREAT job and I loved the new look I walked away with that afternoon. When I went to work the next day I got lots of praise of how the shorter locks made me look younger (which is always welcome). I loved the newfound attention I was getting. Then came the weekend. I was reading a book that was making me a little drowsy and (as I am sometimes inclined to do as I get sleepy) I reached up to run my fingers through my hair. I've probably done this a million times or more, however, this time when I tried, all my fingers gripped were the small tufts of hair on the top and sides of my head (the back was buzz cut). That's when the reality of HOW MUCH HAIR I'd chopped off hit me. I was devastated and proceeded to UGLY cry--hiccups, snot, the work--for about 30 minutes. It took my friends Ben & Jerry, Little Debbie, and Mr. Pringles to sober me up and snap me out of my funk. Also a phone call to my actual BFF convinced me "I am not my hair" and reminded me that it would indeed, grow back. But I say all this because will admit that while I chuckled a little at some of these ladies' meltdowns, I totally get it. I mean if I could have a dramatic (over)reaction to a cut that I REQUESTED, I can only imagine how trauma-inducing it would be for someone else to force a new style--one that I might not be prepared for--on me. And if you read this ridiculously long comment, kudos to you and thanks for listening :)

I've never really had hair above my shoulders before and I had this never ending itch to cut it short. I finally got the balls one day (only to my chin though). Just like you they kept asking me if I saw sure and I said yes. The finished product was it's own kind of cute but honestly I hated it. It wasn't the hairdressers fault though so I tried to make her feel really good about it. I never cried though but i sort od get the emotions. But with these girls...there is really no excuse. Most of them knew it was coming and knew what they signed up for. Except for when that chick got her teeth spaced because Tyra wanted her to have a gap. That's crazy. What's even crazier is she didn't come even close to having a fit about it.
I’m sure you looked fabulous with your new do. Sometimes we aren’t use to change and it can be very emotional too. I remember I cut my hair out of anger when I was a teenager lmaooo so you can imagine how it looked. A mess! I’m now natural and wear weave too. But thank god hair grows back lol

Personally I thought the makeovers were totally unnecessary, and that Tyra took pleasure in having their hair cut. However, they knew full well what they were signing up for, and several even said that they were willing to do anything. 🤷♀️

It's a form of bullying. You know if someone comes on with fabulous hair they'll end up with the pixie cut. If someone comes on with a pixie cut they'll end up with a ton of extensions. Just use wigs initially and then if they like the look, fine...but then that would be rubbish TV wouldn't it. Nothing better for ratings than to have a few meltdowns. I admired that girl who had already let them chop her hair and then said 'Oh f you!
