I wrote this on another RM TH-cam segment but I'll write it again here. My dad grew up in Arkansas and loved to bass fish. He spent a lot of time teaching my brother and me how to fish and hunt. His birthday is today and he would have been 98 but he passed in 2015. His all-time favorite lure was the Smithwick Devil's Horse "Ma-Scooter". He fished a lot on Caddo Lake in the mid-1950's with this lure so it's been around awhile! Seeing Roland Martin fish with this classic old topwater kindles some great memories. Thanks again Roland.
Outstanding! Love the enthusiasm ... ain't a bit different than 35 years ago when my buddy Stan and I would watch Roland, Jimmy and Bill before heading out to the pond for the weekend. RIP my friend, Stan Johnson, Upatoi, GA. Thank you Roland!
You know Roland has always had such a wonderfully exuberant attitude! He's still that excited teenaged boy scout when fishing, except with the wisdom and sage advice born of 60 plus years of bass fishing ! I do pray he keeps an sage eye on his fittness for many more years to come! This world is a better place for his being in it !
Roland so glad to see u out there doing it. I was born and raised in Belle Glade so we have known about u for a long time. Keep doing what u do. God Bless.
I cant believe how you get around on that boat. Up down right left amazing. Filming talking and catching BIG FISH. .Well done.. I saw the 9.4pounder on Fridays what's happing Roland. NICE
I just had my best ever top-water hit a few days ago on a torpedo. I play it over and over on my head. I've never seen a bass move so fast before - it surprised me. The moment my lures hit the water I saw that bass come up full speed at it from under the dock. It was epic. I ALMOST didn't throw it, but something said try it once. There's nothing like fishing
Ohh man I'm so rdy for this weekend after watching Bill Dance and your son son who just made your grand daughter mad and than LFG video and this I'm rdy for this weekend... Ooh I just finish Jimmy Houston after I watch this... 3 of my best Teacher... Thank you Roland Jimmy and Bill and Scott who's gonna make me do something crazy or interesting..
All this rain and flooding here in GA is giving me cabin fever! Haven’t been since early February! Can’t wait to get after it soon! Great video Roland!
Great video Roland, thx a lot. You’ve still got it bud. Clewiston brings up a lot of memories from over 50 yrs ago. My dad and I used to fish for specks out of the Jolly Roger Marina with the Racicots. Looking forward to getting down there in the next month or so before it gets too hot to do it again.
BEEN WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS NON-STOP! I WANT TO GO FISHING!!! AT WORK THOUGH. MAYBE I'LL FISH THIS WEEKEND. BANK FISHING. THANK YOU FOR SHARING AND TEACHING US. SO INSPIRING!
A really awesome video Roland! Watching u use the devils horse made a believer out of me. Thanks for the great tips. Never knew big bass would suck down a lure like that w/out an explosive strike.
I've been watching you since I was a kid! I just bought some of these along with some whopper ploppers! I'm about to slay em' here in Northern Michigan! Let's go son!
Great video roland good catches l catch alot of bass on fly rod and a mix of bream too on top water and I use regular gear too love top water fishing keep ur videos coming and wet lines to u
Youre amazing! I wouldn't be able to get down, on my back ,then raise up with that big fish! I'm embarrassed to say, I'm only 54. Way to go Roland, my friend. How do you stay so quiet. 😂 I'm learning so much while attending your classes.
I used to have a pencil thin devils horse that sat upright until you jigged it. Caught a lot of bass on it but no big ones back when Rayburn had mostly Kentucky bass. With the length that bass looked 9 - 10 lbs. You are doing good with the camera.
I love your fishing vids Mr.Martin...only man that can use the word DEAL wrong everytime and make it sound right EVERYTIME!!lol...thats the deal Mr.Martin...much love from here in Tennessee
Nice bass Roland!!! Yep, more often than not, the really big bass just slurp down a surface bait with little eruption. My most recent 12 lb'er hit a small #90 Whopper Plopper like that. But sometimes, that little "slurp" is more of a distinctive deep "thoomp" sound that only a really big mouth cavity makes from sucking in so much water & slamming shut on the lure. Hard to notice the sound difference, unless the angler is really paying close attention.
My favorite topwater is a Keitech fat impact rigged on a VMC drop dead hook. You gotta play with the weight sizes for the particulate r size (mostly I use the 4.8oz on a 1/8oz but also the 5.8 on that same 1/8oz). You gotta hold your rod tip up just right to get the topwater action (and sometimes what I call "subsurface topwater where the tail just breaks the surface of the water)...Sometimes the bass just love that more subtle action. Plus you can drop it down and let it fall to the bottom...bring it up across weeds and mats...totally versatile.
Dang Roland that was a pig!! I bet she was spawned out she looked better than 7... Sometimes the snooks and tarpon I catch will just come up and slurp a mullet down and other times it looks like an explosion.. cool to see these different techniques Roland and I apply them to my world of saltwater fishing. Great job buddy thanks for great video
Yes you were fishing out there alone but on the flip side you have thousands with you! Enjoy these videos more than the TNN days as these have a more personal one on one flavor to them as if we are right there in the boat with you.
so you're using 20lb mono, I do too and I have trouble with having my line look like a corkscrew on top of the water. How do I fix that should I change brand?
Hey Roland Quick Question. I fish A local wildlife refuge and they dye the water a really blue to keep down vegetation. What colors do you recommend in water that has be dyed.. does the dye effect how bass see colors..
He aint lying about being tangled while fishing topwater. I've seen people throw frogs over a low limb and just dip it in the water and get demolished.
I through my Devilshorse over a limb one time and was easing it up and shaking it to try to flip it over the limb and a three pound bass came out of the water and hammered it
It sucks for the simple reason that the last hurricane destroyed a lot of grasses and bass habitat, so why would they continue with a super aggressive eradication program!
Roland Martin Outdoors They give out contracts that specify that treatment must be done as scheduled. Like a lawn service contract that mows your yard in the middle of a drought when the grass hasn’t grown in weeks...IDIOTIC. Which is just what I’ve come to expect from Fl government.
Roland looks and moves great for a young man of 80 years old. Love this man, he has taught me a lot over the years..... Thanks Mr. Martin
I love watching Roland fish. The man's forgotten more about fishing than I'll ever know.

Love hearing the wildlife in that video.
I believe a lot of that is sand hill cranes. They're everywhere in South FL.
Right?
@@BobSellersSings Boat-tailed Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds mostly. Maybe a couple Gallinules too.
Still has the urge to get up early when conditions are right. What a thrill to see a Legend in action. Made my day to watch this.👍
You’re the best Roland. Thank you

I'd love to have the opportunity to fish with this legend! Could you imagine the stories he has to tell!
Love topwater. Love the Devils Horse. Remember when Smithwick was really Smithwick and they used to make so many different colors of their baits.
Roland so glad to see u out there doing it. I was born and raised in Belle Glade so we have known about u for a long time. Keep doing what u do. God Bless.

Victor Remick and he's 80!! Makes me jealous at 44.
You are an American treasure! Thanks for taking us along on your adventures and teaching so much.
Grew up watching you Roland, now my son watches you with me, thanks for all you do! Hope we can fish with you some time soon.
We're not doing our Okeechobee trip this February because of Covid, so I'm watching this video and living vicariously.
Roland, nice fish at 9:00! 😎🎣 Bravo for leaning on your hip and side leaning over and grabbing that monster!
You are one of the best guys to watch bass fish and Happy belated Birthday. May the Lord continue to be with you.
I love a top water bite. My favorite top water prop bait is the Heddon Baby Torpedo in brown crawdad.
That's a good one too
I like the frog colors in the Baby Torpedo
give the yellow perch with red under the nose a try , thats my go to color.
That's a good one

What a legend, this guy explains everything in so much detail. I’ve learned a lot
All this rain and flooding here in GA is giving me cabin fever! Haven’t been since early February! Can’t wait to get after it soon! Great video Roland!
iTz ATL Clutch same here in Baton Rouge LA. These cold fronts and rain keep delaying the spawn!! They won’t bite
Changing speeds can make so much difference. Thanks for the reminder. #legend
This is also why I have saved about a dozen old wood Strike King Spence Scouts. From the 70's. Brilliant bait for shallow water snags.
I love hem
I think I'll be more sad when we lose Mr. Martin then any other childhood hero I can remember.
I look up to Roland Martin and macho Man
Stop talking like he's sick, geez!

They started hitting top water in Ohio yesterday ! No better feeling than that first bite !! Love the channel Roland
Awesome catch Roland! The bite is on!
Roland talkin dirty to that second bass @ 6:50. Had me laughing...
Holy shit lmao

We still have a foot of ice (sigh). The Spro Rat 50 is my Devil's Horse. Great vid. Keep it going strong.
Awesome catches Roland. You the MAN!

okeechobee is alive and well.gorgeous early morning footage.love it!!
Love it as always Roland. Been watching you a long long time. Keep on keeping on 👍
A very lucky and blessed man. Keep on keeping on Roland,
You got me fishing a frog very successfully, I'm trying a Devil's Horse tomorrow. Fortunately I have a bunch of them.
Wife told me fishing is good therapy. Who can argue.

Roland got some dislike haters huh?
What do you people want from an aged guy? He is harmless!!! The only thing you can have with him is a good advise!
Thanks
New favorite rod nicely done Roland
Thank you Roland, great video!!!

Man that looks like a lot of fun. 👍🐟
I remember he taught me how to fish for bass with plastic worms. Awesome video
That lake is my dream ...wish to fish....never been on that lake but seen nice bass caught on it...let's go roland...I'll by the senkos....lol...
Another great Video
Dang Roland that was a pig!! I bet she was spawned out she looked better than 7... He definitely has a back up bag of senkos.. or 20 bags somewhere on that boat.. keep it going roland,
The greatest topwater Bass Slayer ever son, 👍
Top Water Clinic from the best ever.
Nice bunch of fish keep the videos coming thanks
The Devils Horse also has propellers that are on the small size - it's actually somewhat subtle as far as prop baits go.
Yes
Roland , show them how you used to catch them back in the day on a gold johnson spoon with a spinnerbait skirt glued on the back.
I have a lure from the eighties, it a weed less gold spoon with 2 propellers on the front. It also had a rubber skirt on the back.
I'd happily skip work to film for you 😎🤙
I felt like I was retired and out there with him for a second there.... 😌
I always say the same thing about catching a fish on the first cast. I feel like it's bad luck. I never knew anyone else had the same superstition.
Roland, you need to do another video with Jimmy Houston , you two together is priceless!
I hear there doing one called two fisherman one boat.
Dang! Your channel is becoming better than your son's. Appreciate the great tips!
I bet the devil horse sales is going to go up!
Thank you sir.!!👊🏻👍
Yes you were fishing out there alone but on the flip side you have thousands with you! Enjoy these videos more than the TNN days as these have a more personal one on one flavor to them as if we are right there in the boat with you.
Good job roland
Great video. I wonder if you've ever tried a buzz plug by Arbogast? You can stop and start it similarly as the devils horse.
hey i just noticed lots of birds singing.
spring is in Florida.
If that isn't the most perfect conditions for a Big Bass i don;t know what is.
Mr. Martin, have you done any Stiper Videos on Lake Texoma? If you have I would love to see some.
I'd be delighted to just catch the smaller ones, but that 7lb. bass was nice.
Excelent goodfather 🤜😎
Thanks Roland I Still Get To learn Son,👍
That is 1 sweet bass.
Hey Roland Martin are you still coming to bass pro shops
Roland, Bimini twist? how do you tie that on a lure? Thanks for the video
I'd like to know too
I have the same question. I thought it was a palomar knot.
It's a difficult knot but look it up on google
Mr. Martin do you ever try any South Florida original prop baits like the Sam Griffin Lil' Richard or Daniels Deceiver?
Sam and I are big fishing buddies!
so you're using 20lb mono, I do too and I have trouble with having my line look like a corkscrew on top of the water. How do I fix that should I change brand?
You can also drag it behind the boat and stretch it!
Hey Roland Quick Question. I fish A local wildlife refuge and they dye the water a really blue to keep down vegetation. What colors do you recommend in water that has be dyed.. does the dye effect how bass see colors..
I don't know because I've not fished dyed water
He aint lying about being tangled while fishing topwater. I've seen people throw frogs over a low limb and just dip it in the water and get demolished.
I through my Devilshorse over a limb one time and was easing it up and shaking it to try to flip it over the limb and a three pound bass came out of the water and hammered it
Yes the Devil's Horse is OLD from the 1950 era and the OLD Zara Spook is 83 years old now in 2022. just a couple of the BEST Lures, that Test of Time.
Thank you @RolandMartin for everything!!!❤❤❤
I was almost about to say he had it out the water for 3 minutes lord roland the fish aint an olympic swimmer lmao but he got lucky for sure
If I caught a fish on the 1st cast yesterday, it would have been 1 more than I caught which was 0 😭
Roland, what is your view on the FWC's aquatic plant management strategy?
It sucks for the simple reason that the last hurricane destroyed a lot of grasses and bass habitat, so why would they continue with a super aggressive eradication program!
Roland Martin Outdoors They give out contracts that specify that treatment must be done as scheduled. Like a lawn service contract that mows your yard in the middle of a drought when the grass hasn’t grown in weeks...IDIOTIC. Which is just what I’ve come to expect from Fl government.
Anyone ever heard of Bagly baits?
That's old school baby. I still have a few in my tackle box.
JUST SUCKING IT DOWN!!!!! ABSOLUTE LEGEND!!! ROLAND IS KING!
Roland does the devils horse work really good in the fall as well
Almost
Almost
@@RolandMartinOutdoors I can't wait for Maryland's waters get on the top water bite
Mike, now that our state has made catch and release fishing illegal for now, might have to wait. Stupid decision.
@@corollinout and what state is that your talking about
love that topwater bite, thanks son
GOAT !!!
I would like to see you using spinning reel
