I bought one of these radios just a week ago. Its great for simplicity and am sounds great. Haven't tried FM as I have a LG stereo for that. Cost sangean radio cost $109 new, but it will last me years. Excellent video too.

It’s a brilliant radio. It’s the first one I’ve bought within the last few years with an actual analogue tuner. It’s not choppy when searching for channels. The sound is great. Mine arrived today and it’s refurbished but it’s really clean, has a box, power adaptor and the handle to install if needed. It’ll replace my much smaller Sangean SR-35.

I like the knob placement actually. You could have one hand on the volume as you tune with the other. Instead of getting carpel tunnel going back and forth between tuning knob and volume. As always everyone's mileage will vary. Good calm relaxing review.

    I was looking at the
Sangean PR-D4W AM/FM Weather Alert Portable Radio, for emergencies power outages, and have seen very good reviews on it

It`s an amazing radio for AM and has AM auto tracking like the very expensive CC Radio 2E and basically equal AM reception. The Sangean has a hard time locking onto FM stereo though. In a very rural location the CCrane EP PRO would be the best choice because FM reception is unbelievable. As far as AM reception goes it and the Sangean are equal, with an edge in clarity on some weak and fading nighttime signals going to the Sangean, but then again the AM fine tuning control on the CCrane can often help bring better clarity by reducing interference on the crowded nighttime dial. Neither has the dreaded soft muting that plagues the nighttime AM performance of otherwise great AM DSP radios like the Sony ICF-19 and Panasonic RF-562DD2 which are incredibly sensitive and shine on long range daytime AM signals.

I am seeing these on wal mart for $30 currently. Would have liked to hear the speaker a bit more and test the tone controls. Maybe next time you can find yourself somewhere with decent reception to demonstrate.

Nice piece, something the Mrs would love to take away. Simple to operate for the technophobic. I will look one up on eBay maybe. 73 Lee.

Would fm still work if the antenna is taken off?

I just checked. Unless you have a really strong FM signal, you won't be about to get a decent signal without the whip attached.
