The scene where Priam begs Achilles for Hector's body is almost ripped word for word from the Iliad. Pretty crazy that something written so long ago can still hit so hard today.

That explains why those lines sounded extra poetic.

Hector represents, even today, all the qualities of a good leader and a great man. Brave, fair, considerate, capable... for me is the true real HERO of the Iliad.

AGREED.I was very sad when he died in this film,Achilles wanted fame and glory, but,he truly LOVED his cousin tho. Which I found endearing.GREAT movie too,saw it at the cinema.

Very much agree. Literally had all the hard choices and never faltered. They didn’t sell out his brother, yet scolded his brother and try to change his father’s mind. When he could not, he fought his father’s and his brother’s battle. Went out on his shield. A true man, a true person of character. Great movie.

Just wanted to say that I think yours was one of the best reactions I've seen to this movie. You are much more knowledgeable about the Illiad than almost any other reactor I've seen. My hat goes off to you. 👍

The acting in this movie is top tier acting. Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Sean Bean, Peter O'Toole.

I have loved this movie since it came out. Kahla, like you, I had a cursory knowledge of the Iliad only because I was reading Homer's Odyssey in high school. Having Peter O'Toole as King Priam was an inspired casting choice, with his smooth baritone voice presenting an image of a wise and discerning king who loved his people and was loved by them.

Everlasting glory-to have your name remembered throughout the ages, had a lot to do with your place in the afterlife for ancient Greeks. If no one remembered your name, you may as well not have walked the earth--if after your death people still spoke your name and recounted your deeds that was the closest to immortality you could hope to achieve.
One of the most remarkable things about the Iliad was how much Homer humanized the Trojans throughout the poem. That is a very rare thing, even today but in antiquity that was exceptionally rare to portray the enemy side with empathy--we admire Hector and the plight of the Trojans as much as we feel for the Greeks.

In this movie, Achilles vs Hector is portrayed as the idealist vs the patriot. The little bit at the end where Paris gives the Sword of Troy to Aneas is a nod to The Anead, another story that has Aneas leading the Trojan survivors to Italy where they became the ancestors of the Romans.

9:49 The Myrmidons were pretty much like Special Forces today. Achilles commanded 50 ships, each with 50, so he had 2500 Myrmidons.

I like that the movie attempts to show the war "realistically" the gods are never involved, and when mentioned do nothing. Nothing mythological happens, just men fighting a war.
    And war... war never changes.

Here we don´t see very clear, for obvious reasons for a blockbuster, but in The Iliad there was a love relationship between Achilles and Patroclus.

If the man that found Troy had actually cared about the history and archeological data, instead of fame and fortune, we may have found out if this story had any truth to it or not. Even right now, we can’t be 100% certain the site is Troy, but it’s a pretty good chance it is. Unfortunately Schliemann blew up most of the top layers of the city and where it stood, destroying a lot of it. Maybe we’ll find more information in the future, but I’d like to believe there is some truth to the story, however little.
