There are over 1 million Kenyans living abroad and now sending to Kenya about $ 3 billion each year. If those Kenyan diaspora are ordered to go back to Kenya, it would seriously affect the Kenyan economy. The world is a small village these days where people should live freely and do business. Refugees are very resourceful people and indeed if allowed to settle in Kenya, they can surprise you on how much economic opportunities they would create for themselves and others. Zimbabwe is the only country in Africa that has a well laid out immigration law concerning refugees. Kenya ought to develop its immigration laws in order to be at par with the developed world on how migration of people should be managed.

There should be a time limit for people being in refugee camps. Being born in and living in a refugee camp all your life is not normal. So voluntary repatriation should be encouraged since local integration seems to have happened for some. So let those in camps go back to normal life... It's only fair...

Kenya desicion to close the camps is caused by the national security worries among Kenyans and the government is holding itself responsible for the protection of its citizens .For example look at the attacks on shopping malls and universities were as a result of Al-shabbab militants moved into Kenya through the camps and also Kenya should be humane and should move people out of the camps in stages and the should look at the security situation of the mother countries before sending the refugee home and closing the camps for good or temporarily

So is she insinuating that there should be more attacks to justify the security situation in the country ? Should more lives be lost in Kenya? The previous terror attacks weren’t enough?
Evidence of terrorist disguising themselves as refugees have been reported and its a governments job to protect the citizens. It is now up to international actors and the Somali government to come up with reintegration strategies, effective peace reconciliation processes and security enforcement in Somalia. There’s only so much a country can do, in this case Kenya has played its role for approximately 30 years.

There need to be concrete steps and plans in place going forward for the camps and refugees. The number and size has grown exponentially over the years and so has the need to increase the support on the ground for the refugees during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kenya alone cannot solve this disaster here, it requires the collective work of the Government of Somalia, Government of Kenya and of course the support of the international partners to come to a resolution here. The resolution would look some like this - provide the people with the essential services they need such as healthcare, education and initiatives to reintegrate them into the wider society to prevent the refugees from being disconnected. To guarantee that they will not be neglected if cases of COVID-19 begin to spread through the camps and all relevant parties must ensure they put the welfare of the refugees first before anything else.

30 years no real solution, the UN is proving to be very complacent

  • @jonathanokolie009
    @jonathanokolie009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

All parties to this issue should meaningfully engage each other... Kenya, the mother counties of these refugees and the UNHCR... It shouldn't be a one-sided approach and the solutions should be a wholistic one that really gets everyone on the safe side.
    Talking about the safe side:
Kenya has a good case of national security but that alone is not enough to be used as a cover to rob hapless and vulnerable people of their lives, homes and livelihood.
The UNHCR is at the middle of these crisis. They truly understands how difficult it is to manage these camps over the years and they understand the plights of these refugees more than anyone else. These refugees didn't willingly want to be refugees.. they were simply victims of circumstances.
Some of them have lost loved ones, family and almost everything in life to get there. And many have resettled and have started picking up the remains of their lives. So it will inhumane to just throw them away just like that.
The big question is this: where will they go from here?
    Return to where?
Many of these people are kenyan citizens by law and by right, they are supposed to be cared for and protected by the government which wants to throw them away now.
The other important party is the mother countries where these refugees came from.
They need to be involved in these talks. They need to see it that they must show willingness to repatriate their citizens back home voluntarily and safely.
Over 400k refugees is beyond a national Security interest... The issues should assume an international attention by now because a lot is at stake now.

Kenya gets paid billions for hosting these refugees. Amisom soldiers make more than most civil servants in Kenya, and most of the funds destined for Somalia are routed through Kenyan banks. Most NGO's intended for Somalia are in Niarobi, so lets not act like your giving anyone charity. The timing of this whole thing is obvious. Kenya tried stealing Somali waters, and they lost the court case in the ICJ. Bring them back to Somalia, no problem. Allah is with us.
