The latest version of the phone app, just fyi, does in fact provide the same data usage graph that is available via your SL account. Just tap on the account icon in the top left corner and after a few seconds the usage graph will load.
@@KJ-fl5wn Only if you "opt in" to agreeing to that 24c/gig as an automatic charge to maintain your priority access. If you don't opt in, there will be no extra charge, but you'll get de-prioritized service until the next billing cycle. For most users the de-prioritized performance (same as "best effort" or "RV" performance) will likely be perfectly satisfactory.
I live in rural east Texas . I got Starlink this past June after waiting 15 months. All the internet I could get prior was DSL! 1.5Mbps! AT MOST! WHEN IT WORKED! I now dependably get 40-90+ Mbps down, 10-12 up!(Dependent on time of day of course). It'll only get better. I'm now paying just a few bucks more for Starlink Internet than I was with Phone and DSL internet!. I think these changes are just temporary until more and better satellites are up. Starlink is a Godsend! Also, we had a fiber cable put in along the highway near us about 10 years ago! We've had NO offers for ANY high speed internet! Like you said, the big company's take in the BIG bucks and then do the very least for the consumer! I am now in the 21st Century! Thank you Elon!
I recently moved from an area served by Xfinity where I had Gigbit Internet (1gb down about 1/10th up that up) where I consistently ran up against the Xfinity 1.2TB limit. I moved to an rural area served (I guess you could call it service) by the local phone company that offered 'Up To 6 Mbps download', no way to hit 1TB per month data cap at that rate. It took a full month to get their DSL installed and 6Mbps was on a VERY good day. I was able to get Starlink within the next 60 days and it has been a great improvement. I also received the 3 confusing letters. I'm just finishing my 2nd month billing cycle and tonight I'm back at 1287 GB of data according to the 'Total'. (I still need today's number to see the 'total' for the billing cycle). When I received the 3 letters, I went through the Starlink Data Usage graph day-by-day and copied the peak and off-peak usages into a spreadsheet. Based on that data, the Total Usage number shown on the account management page only includes the Peak Usage numbers. I did the review the same day I received the emails and at that time the account management page indicated that I had consumed 1239 GB of data between Oct 8 and Nov 5. My spreadsheet totals were 1240 for peak and 671 for off-peak usage for a total of 1922 GB to date. Average peak hours usage was about 43GB/day and off-peak hours was about 23GB/day. Yes, I have 2 youtube 'addicts' and a gamer living here... 🙂
I agree that 1TB is not enough for residential use. I completely agree with you that this service was intended for customers that have little to no internet access which now they do. There is still way more growth in this service and we will see what the future holds. I am not a residential user but an RV user so if I was using it for my residential service then I might feel differently about it.
lol, you know ViaSat had an unlimited plan, they datacapped it at 150 GB before they throttled you to snail speed. I only execeeded the 150 GB twice in the 8 or 9 years I had it.
I think this will be very fluid as they continue to put more assets in orbit. Totally expected. No comparison to the Hughesnet I had. Love Starlink! Hoping they quietly drop this as they flesh out the constellation. On a side note I work at an observatory that uses laser guidestar for adaptive optics and one of our astronomers loses it every time we have to shut the laser down for a Starlink satellite passing overhead. Having Starlink I kept my mouth shut until one of my coworkers outed me with "How's that starlink working out for you?" and I got the look of death from the astronomer. I smiled and sung their praises. To date no one has complained about exposures/data being ruined by any satellite that I am aware of.
it is headed to just above Hughesnet. If you can get a t mobile cellphone signal it is possible that you will have a strong contender. Their 5g home internet is unlimited at $49 a month. Peeps I know are talking good about it and they are gaming with it. Problem is, its T mobile.
@@breakfastclub3909 Cellular dead zone. Have to be on porch to maybe handle a phone call without dropout. Cell over wifi never worked with HN. Works great with SL. Worst latency for SL is still under 100ms, HN was seconds. Even if they were the same DL speed Starlink would still win by far. Never had to wait 45 seconds for a page to come up with SL, common with HN Suspect by the time cell companies develop my area SL will have a full constellation up around Mars.
I checked my usage and for the month I only used 364GB. Yay me! Love your videos, haha, don't know if I really listen to all of them but you're easy on the eyes and love your voice.
Living out in the country, I don't have many options. Before Starlink I was using hotspot data from my cell service. Based on my average use up to date, our family is using aprox .33gb per day. I will be at one Tb if no one in the family does anything out of the ordinary. I agree 2-3 Tb would seem to be closer monthly average for a family of 4 with teenagers. Thanks for your channel, lots of great information.
Thanks for the 😊info. I’m on a residential in an area that will have 1000s of RV connections in January for the RV show. Mixed emotions, one hand my 1st TB will be at a good speed, any more is a going to be a lower speed, hopefully better then before SL. If you had a lot of users doing 10TB a month would I be able to get a reasonable time slice.. If your in the 90%, no big deal. There are those that would try to push the most TB through in a month just for bragging rights and the congestion would kill everyone else. One good thing is we will all start paying attention to when we update software.
Like I said in the past we were cut way down at a 50gb cap with Hughesnets very slow satellite internet and couldn't play online games. Starlink has been a lifesaver for us. We have 5 kids at home and our average usage is 1Tb per month. Even if we go over though I bet it'd still be faster than Hughesnets 1 - 5gb connection. We are rural though so I realize not everyone looks at it the same.
For what it's worth, I just checked my data usage and it just so happens today is the last day of the cycle. We're at 255GB. That's for 2 senior adults. Having said that, I would agree that 1TB of data for a family with children could be easily pushing it.
I am a senior, and I use lots of Data Internet, Facebook and driving plus games. Also, I have maybe 800 calls, the next generation retiring from 2022-2029 use data!
You 100% sold me on your channel when you speak so eloquently about our dispicable public schools. I liked and subscribed to your channel as those golden words came out of your mouth. I dispise what the PBS and the Public Schools are doing to our brilliant young minds.
Fingers Crossed they re-consider there Data Cap, 1tb I dont feel is enough, not when youve signed up and paid for unlimited. Thank you for the video again.
Hi Joe - I agree that 1TB is too low, and that 2-3 TB is more reasonable threshold in today's world. Starlink indicates that after crossing the threshold, de-prioritization will happen during times of network congestion. This sort of verbiage is maddening, as it is WAY too vague, giving Starlink the ability to do pretty much whatever they want to and claim that they are operating within the terms of use (which is the point of them selecting such language). It is what it is. As long as they are the most attractive option available to truly unserved rural folks, Starlink will remain the service of choice. Once options arise, many folks like me will re-evaluate and act accordingly.
I know when deprioritization hit my T-Mo LTE router, at 6pm I got 3k ms pings when it wasn't timing out. Completely unusable between 6pm and midnight. I'll be praying for an alternative pretty quickly if Starlink starts doing that during primetime hours like T-Mo.
Weird. My app shows uptime, latency and throughput. No usage 😢 Now I know why I had to re-setup my Starlink….Thanks again for all the hard work you do cranking these videos out for us. ❤
So I received an Email on Nov.3... Your Starlink Order has Shipped!!! Yes finally unlimited high speed internet at my rural Canadian property!!! Uhoh... Nov.4 received the Fair Use Policy email explaining 1TB data cap. I am really disappointed, 1TB is not nearly enough for my residence (5 people) That being said I am hopeful and I am going to give it a try. Thanks for all the Starlink content!
There are some games that now require 150 Gig downloads, but you can schedule them to download off-hours while you sleep. This can also work for operating system updates and even some movie downloads, but if you are unaware it can really catch you by surprise. ( I once hit my data cap with viasat 2 weeks into my billing cycle because my wife decided to binge stream Love is Blind on Netflix) 😍 I really can't complain because my only other option is satellite internet. Viasat had over 700ms ping times, 25 MBps downloads at best, and a 250 GB cap all for $160+ a month. I don't come close to the 1TB limit, and never expected unlimited data to last forever, but with the move to streaming services, working from home, and technology companies forcing larger update download on us, I think the cap (for all providers) should be at least 2 TB
We are a 2 person household with one heavy gamer. Our usage is going to be close as we have 10 days to go on the cycle and used 500 gb of data and the gamer wasnt here for a week so yah it will be close. It is BS that they sold us X and give us Y. Keep up the good work Joseph. Thank you for keeping us updated !!
My Starlink did a factory reset as well. It turned off my pass thru to 3rd party router and jumbled my wifi network. All is good now. Also found a usage tracker in the app now - tap the account icon and you get a daily tracker there as well. Congrats on the wedding sir! You looked dang sharp.
I got just one email saying that if I stayed with my current usage I would not be deprioritized. It's just my wife and I living here watching TV and paying bills on the internet. And look I'm at 217GB already almost halfway through the month. You are right in saying that it should be 2TB or 3TB and that 1TB isn't enough for anybody.
I understand why people are mad, basically terms of service got changed from what they expected they would have. That said, I do believe that their numbers for how many users are using more than 1 TB a month are probably pretty accurate given the demographic that uses Starlink. I know for me with three people in the house and my billing cycle coming to an end in five days we haven’t even broke 50% of the allotted 1 TB. What I’d like to see is cost come down because of the cap though.
I'm on RV, and from what I've read, I'm always de-prioritized, on basic data. So, I would not have priority over a residential user if I am under 1 TB. And when a residential user exceeds the limit and is on basic data, we will have the same priority. At least in eastern Ohio, RV's basic service isn't slow or unreliable. I am still able to work from home and the family streams HD TV on two TVs simultaneously. I wouldn't worry too much… But it does get slow some evenings during peak hours. Not unusable, like Viasat got after just 4 days into the billing cycle when I hit 100 GB limit, and they throttled me to 256kbps. Remember, wasn't this service mainly for those who are so rural they don't have other reliable high-speed options? It is still so much better than the next best option, in my case. And if you have better options, please, by all means, switch off Starlink.
I completely agree that 1Tb is too low. I wish they would show us the monthly data for the last six months that they referenced in the email they sent us. All we can see is the current billing cycle/month.
I was so delighted when Starlink opened up its Beta service after I moved into a data deprived zone. My life could continue as it had been before my move. I was upset when the service speeds collapsed for a few months, but I assumed it was teething problems that would get sorted out. Happily, my service did recover. But then I got the throttling emails, and my heart fell. I didn’t think my data usage was particularly unusual, as we do not game, and usually only have one TV or iPad streaming, although admittedly sometimes in the day a TV and iPad may be used coincidentally a we do have video calls. We are virtually shut-ins, so really need the service. I certainly don’t think of myself as an abusive user, yet I do use over a terabyte a month- a good portion of which is pushed upgrades to various platforms. Apparently, I am in the top 10% of users, but just being in the top 10% doesn’t make me an abusive user by any normal standard. Don’t normal distributions usually only focus on the 95th or 99th percentiles as extremes or unlikely in the event of say polling?. Several terabytes might be abusive, but definitely not one terabyte in this day and age. To me, the cap on 10% of users seems like a way to raise revenue quickly and urgently, knowing that most of these users will need to suck it up and pay the very expensive overage rate now that they have invested in the system up front and settled into their usage patterns. (A second terabyte of data will cost me twice as much as my first terabyte, something that just seems like a revenue grab.) This seems like a sudden rushed decision and implementation, so I wonder if Musk is doing this to be able to leverage Starlink with more financing to keep lenders to the overpriced Twitter acquisition on board. On the other hand, Musk may simply be tarting up Starlink’s financials for an IPO to free up capital for another venture. Either way, I have gone from a religious Starlink disciple to just a jaded user. I now recognize that I am nothing more than a commodity for Musk to squeeze nearly dry time and time again. Hopefully, Musk will back off this offensively low data cap with its high priced option for overages, but I am not holding my breath. Starlink is well on the way to becoming just another satellite service that satisfies no one, rather than the game changer that I thought it was. I am so sad, yet hope that I am wrong. 😂
Help me understand how a no gamer, single TV or iPad stream house busts over 1TB a month. My rural place has four users. Work chores during the day, watch a couple of 1080 stream movies on individual monitors at night with several TH-cam streams on portable devices thrown in and we ave around 600GB per month. None of my devices area allowed to upgrade or update without my permission and I plan to only allow such updates (once I review them) to proceed at night after midnight thru 7am now. I don't see how this 1TB is so terrible that a little discretion and management couldn't make the Starlink system work for all of us better.
@@jeff95050 I understand that one could manage their data usage, as I did with my old DSL line and Turbohub, but I want to live in the present as much as possible and stream visually striking 4K movies at home like most of North Americans can. It is important to me as a near shut in. My usage would not have changed much since I got Starlink. Starlink would have known this, yet obviously sold more dishes for my area than it needed to and perhaps should have. It could well have concentrated its expansion efforts in areas where sufficient capacity was not a problem. But no, it is instead making more money by unprofessionally changing the rules on short notice. That’s not nice.
I understand however in general it could be much worse, it is kind of unreasonable for the top 1% of users to consume the shared resource. I agree 1TB is a bit low however, since their excluding late evening till early morning I think that is much more reasonable than other ISPs such as Xfinity which also have a cap after 1 TB. Comcast is charging about $150 or more per month if you want to consume more than 1TB per month without being fined per byte. So, if we shift our usage from peak time to evening for updates for games etc. I have also discovered that I can download many movies for offline viewing so in a way we can with small modifications keep the usage under 1TB. They had to do something because it was obviously being slowed down by a small number of users consuming massive amounts of data. I suspect that they will increase the capacity as the V2 satellites will come online. The are also constrained by competition. No other ISP allows completely unlimited data exceeding 1TB. All do some sort of "network management" after you exceed a certain amount of data.
1Tb is plenty for those of us who came to Starlink after years of the horrendous data allowances (20Gb per month for me, for 15 years!!!) from the likes of Hughesnet. LOL Anyway, in the case of Starlink, the effects of going over the 1Tb threshold are likely to vary, perhaps quite significantly, depending on how many other SL users there are in your particular cell. The reason is that SL is going to "de-prioritize" your data, which is NOT the same thing as throttling. The effect of throttling would be to limit users' data speeds to a predetermined and set threshold regardless of traffic volume, whereas the effects of de-prioritizing your data will depend on how much priority access traffic there is in your vicinity. Folks in heavily populated Starlink cells are going to see much more of an effect, especially at peak usage times, than the rural users in cells that are relatively sparsely populated. Basically, if you exceed your billing cycle data threshold, you'll end up with the same data access dynamics that the RV and "best effort" users are currently getting all the time right now, and plenty of those folks are happy as clams with their Starlink performance even as their data is de-prioritized all the time. The only people this is likely to cause problems for are serious power users who are routinely consuming way more than their fair share of a limited capacity. Sure, some heavy residential users with big households might have to introduce some frugality by streaming more content in HD instead of 4K and carefully scheduling big software updates and their Steam downloads for the nighttime window when data doesn't accrue to the monthly count. I think by far and away most SL users will find they can adjust easily to this change, and one heck of a lot of them won't notice any performance degradation at all, even if they do occasionally go over the 1Tb cap now and then.
Thank you for the important "how to" on getting the usage. Very helpful. I also agree that 1 TB is too small. Should be 5 TB at least. I also feel ripped off since I ordered dish at $500, had to end up paying $550. Subscribed at $100, now paying $110. Started out at about 180 MPS, now lucky to get 100 on a good day. Fortunately, I kept my land line connection. Was told by ATT supervisor the area I live in will be the last area considered for fiber. So, I am stuck. I can understand Starlink feeling jilted by the gov. However, if Starlink looses customers, it will loose in the long run. So they should do a real "what's fair" to their current customer base. After all, we entered the deal in faith of fairness, they should do the same back to us, the customers.
1tb I definitely not enough. I also have two kids in my rural home and we have a number of PCs, smart TVs, gaming consoles and phones. On low bandwidth consumption days, we use an average of 36gb. Even with us placing focus on downloading large files/content after 11pm, we are around 30-35gb. I did reach out to starlink and their response was that I can buy additional priority data per GB. They didn't give me a price on said data but they did confirm that it will be per GB.
I have checked my usage over the last month. It was 80mps peaks and 40mps I am in West Virginia significantly a rural area with only DSL as an alternative which I have closed. I would say that my usage should be ok as of yet. Starlink is my only choice. We also teach an online course and who knows how things will go with increased enrollment. I wish our government was “for the people”. Thanks for all you do.
@@williamriffee3075 if you go to your account it will give you the usage to date. It will not be expressed in your speed. There will be no ps (per second). The 1TB limit is not 1TBps. But 1TP accumulated data transfer. What you express in ps is the speed at which it is transferred.
So I contacted Starlink about this, and asked if there are Data Caps in Mexico also, and this is what they responded ... Hello, Thank you for reaching out. There are no changes to your service. The Fair Use Policy changes will be implemented for Residential customers residing in US and Canada, and all Business/Maritime customers. If you have any other questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact us by opening a separate support request. Have a great day! From my understanding there won't be in my country Mexico ...
Hi, I'm very pleased with Starlink. People going back to a terrestrial service, which is obviously usable or they would not return to it, did not need Starlink in the first place. Maybe their 'migration' will ease the situation. For me even 500GB at 50Mbps would be fine and is better that an unusable 100GB at 2Mbps 4G from Vodafone. Luckily Europe hasn't been capped yet, but it is bound to come. I certainly agree with your comments about fibre and 5G but business is business and companies will do everything to maximise the 'bottom line'. Thanks for the data usage info., that will be very useful. 😀
Even with what we have, I am with you about the huge users that run social media. Perhaps they aren’t using Starlink, but that should be a factor in throttling
My question is that i have the RV package, which that I believe does not have prioritized download available for this level, so how do I work the system, that it does not affect adversely my RV plan? Have at times had interruptions of regular tv channels (during the 7am to 11pm time slot, but have also watched during the 11p to 7am, and not noticed much improvements. Granted I am usually moving every 2-3 weeks to a new campground, (reason I have RV subscription). Seem to have work better, in southern Idaho, Utah, and New Mexico. But when got to northeast of Dallas, through Oklahoma, northern Mississippi and Alabama, costal South & North Carolina it fades and sometime goes off-line. Anything I can do with this package, to make it better (my fifth-wheel trailer is my home towed by my Ford truck). Don’t think I have gone over any caps, as mostly watching Christmas movies, NCIS, and reading some news articles (not video) . I really appreciate all the information you provide on Starlink, From what I gathered, with the RV plan I have, there are not many tricks to help on data use, i.e.,doing iPhone, iPad, laptop upgrades, downloading a movie between 11pm to 7am - unless I have not correctly interpreted your explanations. Guess I’m stuck gettin whatever is left over from the business, and family plans in the area??? At least it works when phone (Verizon) doesn’t get service, and sure beats the really bad service normally set up in campgrounds. Thanks Mr. Cristina, for any information you might provide. Love your tech video, are very helpful
So PC Mag had a thing on the data caps. Apparently if you opt in for the priority service at least from what they found once you go over the 1TB it will cost 25 cents per gig if you opt in. So on top of the $110 for that 1TB if you want another 1TB it will cost another $250. SO make sure you only use your internet from 11PM to 7am or get put on the basic package. As I'm having a slow month just watching shows and youtube haven't really been gaming or watching live streams I have used roughly 500GB so on a month where I am gaming and doing other things as a single man living alone I'm easily going to reach that 1TB by myself. I can only imagine a family of four going through that amount in a matter of days.
If you update your starlink app it includes the web version you showed on the video. My billing cycle started 10/15 to 11/15 and we’ve used 688GB so far. I gotta say it’s still better than what I had before which was capped at 150 gigs and only got 50mb down MAX and was paying around the same price.
I agree that 1TB is too low, but going to the site and checking my data usage, I'm actually surprised I haven't gone over that amount for my billing period. I also 100% believe that if they're doing firmware updates to the dish/router then that shouldn't be counted towards your limit. My billing period started on 10/12 and today is 11/7 and I'm at 76GB used despite having youtube videos at 1080p pretty much all day every day. Granted, earlier in the billing period was before I got essentially laid off from work, but I was still watching a fair amount of video content. It's looking like my highest usage is 6.8 GB per day. That's also with updates like War Thunder in the background eating up over 1.2 GB. My personal biggest concern is what the upload speed cap might be if exceeding the 1TB limit, because I got Starlink so I could start streaming. I can handle download caps of even down to 10mbps or even lower because that's what I'm used to, but I'm trying to run a business where upload speeds are so important and capping the upload speed might be a problem. At least it's not like a phone company where they cap you at something ridiculously low like 1 GB... yet.
only for the current month, and its only 8 days in. If you are a gamer and a true 4k video watcher you will be pushing those limits. If you watch 1 true 2 hour 4k movie every night you will be at 840 gigs. You are only 160 away. Now throw in some game downloads and these very youtube videos and you will be tanked.
@@breakfastclub3909 yep the expert network engineers don’t get. Most retired 15 years ago and think ISDN is still state of the art. I love the data cops, 1 2 hour movie is too much go outside they say. Guess I’ll our FILs both disabled vets they can’t watch TV anymore we are rural so it might be back to 300 for direcTV.
great, we sat on the waiting list for 2 years and we just received our starlink yesterday and no were did they tell us this before we payed for it. we have xbox and stream our tv content and dont use cable/sat. we bought starlink because the only internet option we have out here is hot spot on our phones which of course is capped and throttled. now we are considering sending it back in the refund period. thank you for the information. after being online now for about 2 hours we are getting about 40 to50mb down and 8 to 14mb up and latency of about 40-ish. we were hoping atleast 100mb. we have been making due with about 2 to 5mb down and 4mb up with latency of 100-200 for the past 2 years.
Living in rural Vermont, there is no cell service here for hotspots, and our only option is DSL that barely reaches 12 or HughesNet. Working remotely during Covid was a nightmare with teenagers going to school, and my husband and I teleworking. I work as a social media manager and downloading/uploading videos has become impossible with Starlink since January 1st of this year. I am on Zoom calls for coaching clients and we've invested so much money and faith into Starlink. We've cut down the quality on all devices to 720p and some to 480p. With business accounts at $500/month I am holding my breath to see what happens February 1st.
I’m on the “best effort” version and if this is their basic plan I’m ecstatic with it. It’s miles beyond anything we have available in my rural area. I just can’t complain at all. Data caps are inevitable for the time being. I’m afraid of t-mobile using Starlink with their cell phones, I think it will be a huge drain on the bandwidth but we’ll see.
Tmobile won't strain Starlink because it won't be available under the current conditions. You won't see that change until the Ver 2 Satellite dish are launched and in orbit. I'm hoping those dish will bring us into the TB bandwidth Era with Starlink thus taking us out of beta even though I know we are supposedly out of beta.
I definitely feel I was sold X and now I'll be getting Y. I live in an area that the only other available internet service is Hughes satellite which is awful. I also was only able to get the RV Starlink. 25 miles down the road Residential Starlink is available. This area is the black hole of internet service. Now I have to worry about how much data I'm using! This after not having decent internet service for over 20 years. Thanks a lot Starlink!
My Starlink is installed at a lake home deep in the woods and my window of visibility is very limited due to tall pine trees around my home. Since I am not a heavy user and have another ISP for streaming, this really doesn't hurt me and I'm just glad to be rid of Viasat! Also, when I installed mine the app said I was having outages every 45 seconds and since I have security cameras installed I was having to wait occasionally for them to load. Now I'm having outages every 12 seconds but having way less interruptions of service and quite happy. More satellites I guess and even with more outages they must be shorter since my cameras are up all the time.
I'd like to add I do agree 2-3 T would be the happy medium, considering most games are reaching 100gb mw2 is a good example so we can download 10 games with out streaming or browsing the internet.
While I understand completely why they are doing this, I too have concerns over the 1 TB limit. I live rural and after years of lousy service with insane prices, I was happy to climb aboard the Starlink train. I'm sitting at 482 gb for 18 days (~800/mth). There is only 2 of us in the house and neither of us play (data intensive) games. I really don't want to have to micro-manage my usage particularly as a) so much occurs such as updates behind the scenes and b) data demands won't be going down but rather up as applications get more sophisticated. I concur that I feel cheated as the goalposts change after investing big $'s for the equipment. In my opinion, they should have focused first on a deep dive into those that are the large users - for example I know of a local business that may have significant data use but is paying for a residential application (much lower cost for the equipment/monthly fees than commercial application) but is in violation of the terms & conditions we all agreed to. When I tried reached out to Starlink to alert them of this issue I did not receive a call back or followup email.
Gaming itself is not really data intensive, it’s the download first time and upgrades. Why you not telling what are you doing to exceed 800 MB? It’s a lot data which I could only archive with watching tons of videos in the highest resolution. 1TB is enough to watch 333 hours HD movies, this are 14 days and nights without any break.
I hear where you are coming from with people in rural areas. I live in the Big Sur mountains in California and the only other option is Viasat which was 150 gigs of data for 260$.I would always have to buy more data each month and was tired of it. I am still happy with Starlink , so far I am not trending to go over the 1TB. I do gaming, Wi-Fi calling , and streaming through Starlink. Since I have no cell signal where I live, Starlink has been a game changer and all my devices run through it and I constantly get 100-200 mbs download.
I agree with you 100%. I had the same thing in the hills of Tennessee. I was paying the same with Vista and I had to drive to town to get cellphone service and would download movies on my phone to hook up to tv to watch it. I really hope they move it up to 1.5 or 2 tb.
@@pawpawray5250 agreed, my PlayStation 5 would automatically update and before I know it. An 80 gig game download update. took up my data. My Viasat would run at 35 Mb download, Starlink has made a major difference. The 1 TB is still an upgrade for me, but they definitely should make it 2TB + ,especially with family households.
I sure hope the billing system will work accordingly. You get throttle down, I think ( in my opinion ) that the bills should be throttle down accordingly.
This was to be expected sooner or later. Any company which offers unlimited data in the beginning is doing it to sign up as many customers as possible (market share grab), then put a cap on it once their network is unable to handle the bandwidth due to too many users and usage. Unfortunately there's a finite number of satellites they can cram up there once the total space grid is fully saturated. They are currently trying to expand bandwidth using v2 Starlink satellites, but even that has a finite amount of bandwidth and probably requiring the purchase of new more sophisticated ground receivers. The problem with space based internet is that each satellite has to cover a much larger sized ground "cell" compared to mobile cellular "cells". Both technologies have their pros and cons, so onc must chose wisely depending on usage, and geographic coverage.
it's surreal to see people from 50K GDP per capita countries like the US or Australia complaining. i'm in rural part of a 2K GPD-per-capita country and i can't wait to get starlink.
I feel so upset that Starlink completely change the plan on us after we purchased all the equipment. I definitely see that 1TB is not enough after looking at my data usage and seeing that my sons video game downloaded over 80 gigs for a new game and two days later 60 gigs to update. I teach from home and my husband works from home so in order to try and not go over the limit I had to change all my video settings to 1080 P and research where everything is being used. it has been interesting to see, but I don’t think that we should be having to do this. so many people are updating with the times and cutting the cables and using streaming it’s unbelievable that companies are putting data caps on growth and advancement! I find it very hard to believe that only 10% are using over a TB! looking at Facebook posts those of us that do use over that dreaded 1TB looked at as outcasts and data hogs lol… I call that digital progress! thanks for your thoughts!
I installed Starlink at my grandmother's house in southern Vermont. Her and my Aunt watch television with TH-cam TV and they roughly use 900gb for just that. They don't get out much so the TV is on most of the daytime.
I think 1TB is to low. These days almost anything you buy electronically for your home wants internet access. I'm 66, wife's hitting 60, we don't game, rarely watch a 4 k movie but stream Hulu for TV service. I'm at 1075 gig with 4 days left in my billing period. I have loved Starlink but feel kinda like a bait a switch here. Feel like now I'm being penalized because they have grown the network to quickly......mobile, RV's, boats, and aircraft. I'll give it a few months to see if calmer heads prevail on the data limits but won't stick around long at $110 for 1TB. Thanks for all you do Joe, great video as always. Congrats on your daughter's wedding.
From my understanding, starlink RV has no priority data, and will always be throttled during congestion. So residential will have priority over RV until you hit 1TB.
On what you said from 6:53 looking at the Starlink Fair Use Policy page, at the Residential Services under "Residential, for RV, Portability, and the Best Effort" plans on the chart, both for "Priority Access Data Limits During Peak Hours" and "Additional Priority Access" it reads "Priority Access Not Available" for these groups. So I take that for these, you will not have priority over Residential, even if you never go past 1-TB. So in other words Residential Service users will be put in with the group of "RV, Portability, and Best Effort" after going past 1-TB and all will be put back in the line behind any Residential that have not gone past 1-TB or for those who choose to pay an additional $0.25 per GB to keep their Priority.....did I say that right? Edit to add: So if I'm right, $110.00 per month comes to about $0.11 per GB then $0.25 per additional GB until the next billing cycle. Add it this way... 1-TB costs you $110 and additional 1-TB for another $250. Link to page I got this from as see the date/time I posted this comment... www.starlink.com/legal/documents/DOC-1134-82708-70?regionCode=US
I have the RV Starlink and we use it as primary internet. Our data usage 10-31- 11-8 is 125gb. We don't use it for primary streaming but for gaming and internet.
I agree, 1 TB is not near enough, I was on that TB cap with Telus and we had to continually monitor especially the last two weeks of the cycle. We are a foster home with several bits of technology coming and going....nice while it lasted.......crap
Australia doesn't officially have data limitations yet, but it is definitely here even on basic usage. Have had throttling applied on multiple occasions because of over congestion. Stupid thing is they are currently running a cheap purchase sale to get more customers on service. Another strange thing have currently been having problems with is I can no longer share TH-cam videos to Facebook if I use starlink. Yet have no problems if I use my mobile wifi.
What current speeds are you getting ? I live in suburbia in Brisbane Australia and I am currently getting 245mbps down 23mbps Upload with Telstra normal NBN. Are you getting similar speeds with Starlink?
@@confilms5041 Rural SA no NBN unless drive 60km to nearest town currently ranges from 150- 200 unless you hit their data cap then it only drops back to between 100-130 still better then Telstra which struggles to hit even 1 here were I live on mobile broadband
Need 3 TB for residential at a minimum. Kids and modern entertainment eat up the GB quickly. Like you said, the updates and other stuff eat thru the 1 TB quickly.
Keep up the good work!! Outside of the data cap, which should be 3TB, anyone else see the expected speeds are now half, Normal: 20-100, Basic 5-50? Before Normal was up to 200 and Basic was up to 100. Data cap levels and stated slower speeds, not a good look for Starlink.
Starlink is still the best thing going for my purposes. Viasat wanted to charge $319.93 (tax included) for 300 GB package with less than a 5gb down load.
In the fair use policy it also states that if your area is not congested there should not be a difference in speeds. So as Starlink launches more satellites congestion should decrease and speeds should not change after the 1TB cap
Joseph, I became an early adopter of the technology because I "believed" in what it was trying to accomplished. Now, I am starting to become doubtful of what Starlink's core intentions are or were. The service went up in price by 10 dollars, we accepted that, I haven't seen numbers north of 200 Mbits in almost a year (I used to see 300 Mbits) I accepted that, now with the data caps. I own 2 dishes which I pay for monthly and I barely use because I have symmetrical 1gig at home. I only use SL when I go camping and that's a few times during the summer, yet I am paying 110 a month X2. The least Elon could do is allow rollover data and allow people to accumulate their unused gigs. Why are we being [their customers] penalized for Starling's lack of capacity management? They were the ones who oversold, oversubscribed their service and saturated their network? Now, they want an excuse to charge more while providing a s#itty service. OneWeb and project Kuiper better get their acts together and create completion.
Thanks for showing this. I was not sure how to track data but this certainly helps. As far as the question, I am pleased with starlink, I am rural and have no choice. I hope that 1 TB will expand in time, and I believe it will. I would buy the service and equipment again.
I have RV service so I have been on basic since RV was offered. The only option where I live is viasat it was $170 a month for150 gb. The speed was 5mbs down and 1up on a good day and less then 1 up when we went over 150 gb for about half the month. With RV I get 20-30mbs up and 10 down and pay $135 a month.I am currently using 350-400gb per month. I paid the deposit for Residential as soon as they started accepting them and live in an area that went from mid 2021 to mid 2022 and now has no time listed.
I am fine with it. Starlink is for rural users, etc that don't have other high speed options, 1TB/mo is a crap ton for those of us that have been living without high speed options. Granted, many Starlink users may have other high-speed options. Great, you can evaluate your options and move to another provider if 1TB/mo is not enough data for you.
We only stream TV’s and use wifi on our phones because no data signal through cellular. I’m already at 2TB this cycle. No games and no downloading of media. It’s all streaming, phone data, and voip.
@@josecovas7716 damn, I've got 4k tv going most of the day and are nowhere close to that. No idea how you can hit 2TB in a month tv only, even with a few on at a time.
RV and Mobile users are already de-prioritized. They will not have faster service if you go over 1TB. Also, 11pm to 7am is not a 'free-for-all' as you stated. While it does not count towards your data limit, if you go over, you will be de-prioritized 24hrs/day. Now, it is likely that service between 11pm and 7am will not be congested.
I use my Residential Starlink at my second home. I'm only there one week each month on average. I also take it along when we go on weeklong off-road riding and camping trips. Which is often, but still, I think I'm rarely using the 1 terabyte in any of those months. So, I'm not a good test person for this. I think it's interesting that my residential system works so well on the road. But I'm usually out in the backwoods with it, not in congested areas.
No data restrictions in the UK as yet. Thank God! I am preparing myself for the throttling to be introduced here as well, 1 TB is not enough and I am wondering what the additional cost for priority is?
I believe you are correct in that 1tb is to low for normal use. I also hope Elons minions are monitoring Reddit and your channels and pay heed and raise the limit. Thanks for your work on this and other subjects.
Wasn't there times stated by StarLink where data usage doesn't go against your data cap? Like 11pm-7am. Just do all your major updates/downloads during those times and you should be good. Now that I think about it, does data upload go against your data usage?? Im a photographer and I use Adobe Cloud to upload/download/share my photos, which I shoot RAW, and can get to large size folders.
I've been on starlink since July. I downloaded Forza 5 yesterday that alone was 125 GB. My household watches a lot of online videos. We are to far out for cell signals or cable. I may need to adjust my sleep schedule to take advantage of the off peak hours. We work from home as well.
I have a house of 5 (3 kids my wife and I) we game, watch movies, social media, and watch shows. We only use around 500 gb. My suggestion if people are using more do updates uploads or download set your devices to do between hours that don’t count and you’ll be good.
We just got SL about 2 months ago......we canceled yesterday because of the data caps. With a special needs daughter and my wife and I working from home and connecting to VPN's, we hit 800gb and still have over a week to go. We will get it when we move in a few years and hopefully they will change their data policy. It would be nice if you can get different plans....i.e. 1TB, 2TB etc.
Thanks for all the useful information you post about Starlin. Very useful and has helped me many times. I am having a new issue the past two days, early in the morning. We have been woken by a high, shrill screaming from the Starlink receiver (may it is the ethernet adapter). By the time I get out fo bed and get to the unit its lasts maybe a minute or too and whn I place my hands on the cords it seems to disappear. I am guessing the unit or the adapter has a short? I do have a ticket in for help but was hoping you may have some insight into this. Thanks so very much! Roger Thompson Illinois
Just weighing in - the two main reasons I went to Starlink are because of their proposed speeds and UNLIMITED usage. They are not able to deliver the proposed speeds in my area and they say to wait for more satellites and generation 2 satellites. OK, I am a believer in Elon Musk and SpaceX what they have been able to deliver in the past. But now, they are changing our agreement for them to provide unlimited data. I never approach 1TB of data in a month, but that is because I do not watch movies online or play games. I got this because I would LIKE to watch a movie once in a while and I am very interested in the technology and want to see how it progresses!!! VERY disappointed, but I will stick with it for a while due to the initial investment in the hardware and, while the performance is not what I had hoped for, it IS usable.
I agree with you. However, what can we do about it? I am not sure except cancel the service, but that is not always practical. If they start losing subscribers quickly, they may reverse or alter their policy.
Rural area here. Paid alot for, waited for this service and now they change the plan; not happy. It is easy for any area to say they upgraded the rural areas when they consider everyone in the same category like where I live. Fir the people that had good service; they installed fiber in those areas and left me without another option. They claimed the whole county was rural but they aren't getting nor ever was getting 1.5 speed. So this change by starting it sucks.
We are also 2 Senior users and at 27 days in our useage is 240 GB........... But if our son was still at home and gaming/streaming/etc. I'm certain it would be 4-10x of what we use to watch internet tv!! 2Tb is a more reasonable min - max before they ding a user for being excessive..
As a youtube TV user, I'd like to see about 2TB of data. I'd also like to see what download speeds will be on basic access. I guess I'll find out next month.
Ty sir for your post and analyses. Now my view. Without 'Starlink' we, my people, would as in the past be orphans on the 'world wide web'. Prior to 'Starlink' we were not able to access the world. Now we can become part of humanity and its rich knowledge. A few orcs/trolls/heathens should not be able to by their callous selfish, me only, attitude be granted the power of their greed. The law of supply and demand should rule, with the understanding that those abused by tyrants should have a voice as an alternative to their providing justice to all people. In brief, if you want, you pay for, what you use of a finite resource, or you kill the resource for all.
I think they didn’t bring datacaps for money in the first place. Starlink in US is suffering from congestion and a lot of people are complaining about low speeds. If the priority budget is too high, nothing would change. So I think everyone has to overthink their usage, to ensure everyone can have 150 mbps for example.
I'm highly considering Starlink, I moved to a rural area last year, been one year without internet. All these pros and cons, and I'm really worried about dropping roughly $800 (I watched your 9 things to know before buying video, so estimating the extra equipment from that, as well as the first time monthly charge) I'm worried about spending roughly $800 or so on something seems so great, but might not end up being what I hoped.... I really hope you can read and respond to this comment, I'd love to hear what you think.
I'm glad to see someone else who is posting the same concerns as well. I have spent some decent time learning about this offering and have many questions that remain unanswered. For example: what is the minimum Grade of Service? This service appears to be very much open-ended in terms of cost/benefit. Starlink's web site appears to be primarily geared towards sales hype and not much else. I will not buy this system at least until my basic questions have been answered and then can determine its true value.
There are a couple more changes in the TOS. Expected Download speeds are now 20-100Mbps, down from 50-150Mbps. The other change is in the description of service type for RV and Best Effort: "RV and Best Effort service plans are permanently Basic Access." And their expected speeds are 5-50MBps.
Have you read this for yourself? I just reviewed the TOS and I didn't see any such for Best Effort. Best Effort is active for me. If I try to change my plan it shows that Residential is active for me. As soon as a slot becomes open I will be prioritized. But my Best Effort plan is considered residential - best effort.
@@Justin28082 The speeds are in a chart under Starlink Specifications. The text I quoted is a cut and paste into the comment. I can't find that again, possibly changed as I notice several other changes, including this " (2) allowing users to choose among Service Plans at various price points depending on how much prioritized Service is right for their needs." Under Fair Use Policy is also a chart with "Priority Access Not Available" for basic access. That just means your not under any cap and also don't get priority until that availability comes your way. The fact that they charge the same rate for Basic and Priority seems wrong to me.
Agree that one terabyte is not sufficient. It is the last day of my billing cycle and I'm sitting at slightly less than one terabyte in may hit that 1 TB when the usage updates tomorrow. There are three in the household and primarily internet is being used to to stream TV on TH-cam TV, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, prime video, Netflix and a few others. There are two 4K TVs that are on maybe 10 hours each per day. During this period there were a few movies streamed in 4k as well as a couple of college football games streamed in 4k. There is nobody that plays games over the internet like with PlayStations or anything like that. During this time we had four grandkids during the day for about 5 days and they play on their tablets or smartphones including watching videos. I have a feeling there will be times where there will be heavier usage and based on my current usage closing in on 1 TB, no doubt we will exceed one terabyte. Now if the speeds when deprioritization occurs is still fast enough then I see no problem. But that is an unknown at this time to me, so will have to wait and see.
It seems to me that folks are losing track of why Starlink was created. To provide low latency high speed internet to those with no other option. These folks (me included) have never had anything like this. 1TB is more than enough for people in the situation for which Starlink was created.

@@mrsrhardy In Canada, its $161 a month, assuming I don't go over the 1TB limit ☹
The latest version of the phone app, just fyi, does in fact provide the same data usage graph that is available via your SL account. Just tap on the account icon in the top left corner and after a few seconds the usage graph will load.
They are going to charge 0.25 for 1 gigabyte of data if you over.
It averages out to 33 GB a day per billing cycle that you have to keep your usage under. Pretty had to keep under that with streaming and gaming.
I do not believe the plans will get better regardless of the infrastructure. Prices never go down on these services and infrastructure is costly.
@@josecovas7716 Agreed historically speaking. We shall see. Never say never with Elon.
I hope so.
it is headed to just above Hughesnet.
Never had to wait 45 seconds for a page to come up with SL, common with HN
Suspect by the time cell companies develop my area SL will have a full constellation up around Mars.
Hughesnet was as bad as the Tmobil hotspots in rural areas.
I checked my usage and for the month I only used 364GB. Yay me! Love your videos, haha, don't know if I really listen to all of them but you're easy on the eyes and love your voice.
Yay!!!! truly appreciate you being here.
Best comment so far 👍
For what it's worth, I just checked my data usage and it just so happens today is the last day of the cycle. We're at 255GB. That's for 2 senior adults. Having said that, I would agree that 1TB of data for a family with children could be easily pushing it.
Agree.
I am a senior, and I use lots of Data
Internet, Facebook and driving plus games.
They are always congested, thus the massively decreased speeds over what they promised. Very disappointing for the rural customer.
Yep
There are some games that now require 150 Gig downloads, but you can schedule them to download off-hours while you sleep. This can also work for operating system updates and even some movie downloads, but if you are unaware it can really catch you by surprise. ( I once hit my data cap with viasat 2 weeks into my billing cycle because my wife decided to binge stream Love is Blind on Netflix) 😍
I really can't complain because my only other option is satellite internet.
Could not agree more!
Agreed. However, in reality the costs are only going to go up from here.
Good idea. I wonder if they have an email address to actual contact and get an answer?
But no, it is instead
making more money by unprofessionally changing the rules on short notice.
LOL
Anyway, in the case of Starlink, the effects of going over the 1Tb threshold are likely to vary, perhaps quite significantly, depending on how many other SL users there are in your particular cell.
Thanks for all you do.
that sounds like speeds, not usage.
@@USMC6976 I’m sorry, that was data usage.

So I contacted Starlink about this, and asked if there are Data Caps in Mexico also, and this is what they responded ...
Hello, Thank you for reaching out. There are no changes to your service.
Thank you for being here.
Exactly.
If you update your starlink app it includes the web version you showed on the video. My billing cycle started 10/15 to 11/15 and we’ve used 688GB so far. I gotta say it’s still better than what I had before which was capped at 150 gigs and only got 50mb down MAX and was paying around the same price.
Likewise.
I'm hoping it's a hiccup to get better with time.
I’m not sure if there was an update to the app, but you can now see your monthly usage in the app for iOS in the account section in the top right,
Thank you for this video, just wanted to add that on the Android App "Usage" is labeled as "Throughput"

Really appreciate you covering this, it really does help clarify things.
LOL
On the App you can see your total usage totals like from the webpage. Click the Head symbol at top left.
Love Starlink and will not give it up !!!!!
I agree. 1 TB is not enough data. I hope Elon us hearing us!
Loud and clear. He is a brilliant man.
@@jcristina Do they have a phone number or email so that the ticked off people can be heard?
From my understanding, starlink RV has no priority data, and will always be throttled during congestion. So residential will have priority over RV until you hit 1TB.
I bet you’re right and I’m wrong.

Thank you!!
I have the RV Starlink and we use it as primary internet. Our data usage 10-31- 11-8 is 125gb. We don't use it for primary streaming but for gaming and internet.
👍🏻👍🏻
I agree, 1 TB is not near enough, I was on that TB cap with Telus and we had to continually monitor especially the last two weeks of the cycle. We are a foster home with several bits of technology coming and going....nice while it lasted.......crap
Well many blessing to you for help those of us that need a hand up. Hoping Elon is listening.
@@rogermckinnon5738 awesome thank you that’s very helpful. :)
Thanks for all your info on Starlink Joe. 1 quick question. They say 11pm to 7am. Is that Eastern time, Central time zone or which? Do you know?
In the fair use policy it also states that if your area is not congested there should not be a difference in speeds. So as Starlink launches more satellites congestion should decrease and speeds should not change after the 1TB cap
However, I am concerned that starlink will raise end-user rates just the same.
Good point
We only stream TV’s and use wifi on our phones because no data signal through cellular. I’m already at 2TB this cycle. No games and no downloading of media. It’s all streaming, phone data, and voip.
@@josecovas7716 damn, I've got 4k tv going most of the day and are nowhere close to that. No idea how you can hit 2TB in a month tv only, even with a few on at a time.
Amen. Same for me.
@@cbenson513 I don’t know how either, but It’s happening.
Where did you get your humidifier i love it lol
I hope so!
Agreed kids using it and watching videos I am at 850gb with 7 days to go. Gonna go over for sure each month.
So from 10/8/22 till today I am at 2098gb
You can check the data on the phone app as well. Also how do they determine what time zone everyone is in? Is it by your POP?
Interesting solution. Everyone that works from home and uses Starlink needs to which their sleep pattern to accommodate the service. 😂 I love it!!!!
I have a house of 5 (3 kids my wife and I) we game, watch movies, social media, and watch shows. We only use around 500 gb. My suggestion if people are using more do updates uploads or download set your devices to do between hours that don’t count and you’ll be good.
My next video.
I agree that 1TB might be a bit low but my local Internet that I unfortunately cannot get has a limit of 500GB I believe so it's a step up from that.
Is your data streaming or uploading TH-cam videos. Or downloading software or movies other than streaming.
what do i think? a really good show tonight! tenx for keeping us up to date!!
You're comparing SL w land based options. Why not compare against similar sat based providers like HughesNet ?
Ouch!! No comparison!
Cox residential customers have a 1.25TB data cap.
What is the minimum GOS (Grade of Service)?
I agree with you. However, what can we do about it? I am not sure except cancel the service, but that is not always practical. If they start losing subscribers quickly, they may reverse or alter their policy.
Agree
I’m sorry if I missed this but what exactly are we talking for speeds with the basic access?
You can also get your daily and total usage on the app, just click on the icon at the top left corner of the apps home screen.
Thank you. Might need to update the APP
Wonderful points.
1 Tb is double what I use per month. It work for me as a full time RVr. I have good internet where ever I go which I did not have with LTE.
Keep up the good work!!
Thanks, will do!
I can't find that again, possibly changed as I notice several other changes, including this " (2) allowing users to choose among Service Plans at various price points depending on how much prioritized Service is right for their needs."
Under Fair Use Policy is also a chart with "Priority Access Not Available" for basic access.
