Man... this is sooo important. I know a young dude in Jalisco who grew up speaking Nahuatl, and he's embarrassed for having that knowledge. Now, we don't need to go down the road of "why?", but I'm confident thanks to your videos and others that someday his kids won't feel this way... why do I a European-American care? I like to use this metaphor to explain my sentiments... When there's a family or group of families that have lived in your neighborhood for years and years you look up to them, you give them the respect, because they've been around long enough to understand patterns of the location or developed a strong culture. It's the same thing with the Americas as a whole. P.s. why not give a name check to your friend in the description!?

I don't want to tell you how to pronounce your own last name but in Nahuatl "tl" is not pronounced as "kl." This mispronunciation sometimes occurs when a Nahuatl word enters Spanish, such as the word "escuincle" which comes from the Nahuatl word "itzcuintli."

Thanks for keeping this language alive! What is your translation of Aztlan?

    • @nahuatltlahtocan
      @nahuatltlahtocan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Az(tli): wing.
      -tlan: locative suffix.
Therefore, Aztlan literally translates as Place of Wings. However, I've heard of more metaphorical translations like "Place of Herons." In Nahuatl, heron is aztatl, so Place of Herons would be translated as Aztatlan.

You can take a more casual approach to learning if you want. You can learn a bit here and there when you're interested and leave it alone when you're not. And if you ever take a trip to South or Central Mexico you could brush up.
Just so you know this method works, I've used it to be able to say things like hello and thank you in these languages:
      Dutch
      Arabic
      Chinese
      Vietnamese
      Japanese
      Greek
      Cherokee
      Italian
      Russian
To ask basic questions in these languages:
      Choctaw
      French
      Hebrew
And I used more traditional methods to speak more extensively in these languages:
      Spanish
      German
The last two groups involve more extensive study and vocabularies of at least 500 words, but in the first group I only know 1 - 15 words maybe. It's very easy to "learn a language" just enough to say "hi, what's this, I like, where is, food, water, bathroom".
You seemed sad so I just wanted to give you other options, since often when we think of language learning we're actually thinking of language mastery (which is not necessary).
The only language I've mastered is the one I was born into: English.

I found out from a podcast about experimental archeology that everytime I had heard the word atlatl, it was being pronounced _very_ wrong, and then I figured, oh wow, then I've probably been saying axolotl, Nahuatl, and Quetzalcoatl all wrong too. I understand that pronunciations change as words get loaned, but I felt it was important to know how they were properly pronounced. I am really enjoying learning a bit about this and intend to continue the series.
