Grundfos UPS3 pump vs UPS - is it really as powerful????? Please help.

    its not just the head you have to compare the pump curves i.e flow vs head. Some pumps deliver a higher head but smaller flowrate.

    Good vid. Opens up a serious question about compatibility and the manufacturers honesty.
    What did Grundfos say, did you ask them?

    I had the same issue and i did the same as you by just swaping the head, So after playing around I changed the body too. And its a masive diference, I dident get a good side by side look at the bodys as i was in the loft with just a phone light But they did look a lil different. Anyway it works good . i also set it to Proportional pressure ll as i found that just haveing it at the set speed lll setting The pump could not pull water fast enough so it basicley cavitates and dose little work , with my application (oil fired heating and water) the boiler would cut out on over heat, but on the Proportional pressure setting its all good, I think its more about flow rate than presure and the pump running flat out makes presure but it cant suck the water fast enough, It was a pain to find that setting mind lol. but as i was playing i found the boiler was more happy with standard speed set lower. more flow but less presure. i also did change the 2 ball valves each side of my pump as it had 2 screwdriver type shut off valves that were 22 mm pipe to the pump fitting but the hole inside the shut off valve was like 15mm so i just removed them just a pain to drain the system to change a pump lol , sorry for the spelling im dsylexic, just hope this helps x

      Ross, thank you so much for taking the time to respond.
      Having heard your experience I may now take the trouble to change the body too.
      To be honest, since making the video my UPS3 has remained in its box sat on the shelf in my garage, with the original pump doing a sterling (if yesteryear efficient) job up in the loft.
      Luckily I have decent valves in place so I shouldn't need to do a full drain down.
      Once again thanks for the info and in the event that I do get around to changing it no doubt I'll probably make a video and certainly will give you a mention and credit.

      Interesting. Wonder if it wasn't fitting the new back that did the trick but upgrading the valves?

      @@petemc5070 Reading his initial message I think the changing of shut off valves might have caused his initial problem of "not pulling enough water" and so he had to change the motor to proportional pressure. Personally I would never mix and match body to heads for any pumps as most of the initial design and testing of any equipment is done on a complete new design, fixture, holes sizes, etc.

      Thanks for the information I’m hoping fitting the UPS3 my L1 overheat fault on my IDEAL Boiler stops occurring,

    My boiler is struggling so I thought a better flow rate would help. It appeared from the graphs the that litres per hour were more then the UPS2. I fitted the new pump keeping the fitting as you did, it looked exactly the same to me. However I got a fault on the boiler,temp spread to great which basically means the flow was too low and this was on 3. I feel I’ve been sold a lemon.

      @@cousinbenson2999 British Gas seem to agree with you. The changed the pump over entirely, they said you should always do that. But the flow is still too low. They said I’ve a restriction in the pipe work which means floorboards up etc. A job for the New Year. Luckily I had the immersion wired up in August as an emergency so have some heating and hot water.

    The bodies are different . I just useda micrometer there I'd 1.6mm difference . That's 0.8mm either side of the impeller .

    I just got my pump changed as the the old Grundfos (no lights on head) ceased, and the new Grundfos UPMO 15-60 compatta is NOT as powerful as the old one, some of my radiators on the end of the circuit are not warming up as much as they used.... Maybe thats where the energy efficiency comes from

      You may need to rebalance your lockshields now your system is reconfigured.

      I too replaced an old Grundfos which circulated water across my 20 radiators quite happily on no.2 setting. The new UPS3 was unable to heat the furthest radiator on my system at no.2. Only when I switched it to 3 did the radiator heat up. I will rebalance the upstairs rads to see if this helps.

    Did you bleed the rads i install one just the other day and my boiler kept on going turning off after less than two minutes i put the old back into place as i thought it was faulty then i drained the whole system and bled each rad turned on the heating and the knocking noise was very load i gave it another few hours to make sure rads where full of water checked by bleeding any air
    from the Rads one the rads i discovered a lot of eir coming out of the bleed valve gave it a chance to make sure trickles of water start flowing from the bleed valve.
    Turned on the boiler and bingo working fine all radiator's piping hot and the old pump working fine it was down to an airlocks.

    Yes, I also found out that the pump with LMH Settings which was made obsolete are now being made again for old systems, grunfos have not stated anything about this issue,, the new pumps won't work on an old system I've just spent 4days ... in the end I changed the pipework to suite...😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

    When they say the bodies are interchangeable I bet they mean that they're the same length and connection sizes.

    To be honest these pumps are shit...!!
    I only fit the old style pumps when I’m doing replacement’s and that saves the customer ringing me to tell me some of the rads are not working , if you fit this type of pump on a new clean install it would be ok but on old clogged systems forget it... 👍

      Nothing wrong with them. Usually down to crap engineers not bothering to flush the systems and balance the rads. Do the job properly and they're absolutely fine.
