Honestly, a lot of pregnancy symptoms would be masked by having a newborn. Tiredness? Check. Sore breasts? Check. Extra belly weight? Check. Irregular periods? Check. Hormonal shifts? Check.
Not only that but when your told its normal to have symtopms like that and that you defiantly won't get pregnant. You don't watch for other signs. Movement could be attributed to gas. Especially if the baby does not move that much.
Plus if your placenta is at the front (like mine was for both my pregnancies) it can mask the baby's moments a fair bit. In this case I can completely understand how she didn't know.
@@jamieharrison4142 And then there's me. I am an RN and have had a bunch of kids (I'm pregnant with the 5th). I know exactly what early fetal movement feels like. I swear that I have "phantom baby kicks" in between kids. It legitimately feels like a baby early on, and it super messes with me haha
I agree too! Fun fact: One of the ob doctors on this episode of "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" addressed the fact that pregnancy symptoms can be masked in women who have given birth less than a year before becoming pregnant again. Doctor Jones did not show that part of the episode.

Can we talk about how NO WHERE in my life have I ever been told or heard that breastfeeding can be actually used as birth control. I'm 24 and never heard a whisper of this and was actually giggling at the title not knowing it had even a shred of truth to it
Yes, breastfeeding works for me when I had my first baby. I got pregnant after I stop breastfed 2years and 2 months. Then, after the second babies I started birth control….that when my troubles started. (Ps all our families like that.)
I think if there's ever a time you would miss pregnancy, it's post partum. I lost weight initially then gained, my periods returned after 9 months but I had aches and pains like period pain before that. My hormones were all over the place and I was exhausted. With a newborn, you don't have time to think about yourself as much so you definitely could miss any of the normal symptoms.
Defiantly, my nephew is one if those, my sister was just so busy she didn't even think about it till we were having a joke about getting pregnant and she was like "oh wait a sec" counted the months.
The parents seem nice, but the heartwarmingness was kind of ruined for me by the fact that the child probably has some kind of permanent damage (either from the mother unknowingly having such a terrible diet while pregnant and then giving birth so prematurely, or the treatments they had to give the baby for months to keep her alive, and/or from being dropped on her head at such a young age) which all would have been prevented if an OBGYN hadn't given out misinformation to a patient.
As someone who is newly pregnant I definitely can’t miss the fact that I am. The nausea (which ironically is the least pervasive in the morning) is unreal, I would be convinced I was dying if I didn’t know. However, my sister in law had no idea she was pregnant. She had milder but seemingly regular bleeding, which she assumed was her period. She did gain weight, but she carried towards her back so she didn’t get the belly at all, and him being so far back cushioned a lot of the movement, so she didn’t feel him move. (Apparently her mother carried her the same). Her hips widened and that was the only physical change of her being pregnant, but even it was so minor that no one thought anything of it. Near the end she started to have swelling of hands and feet, seemingly when she had caffeine so she went to doctors who ran tests and everything came back normal so they said just avoid caffeine. She did experience some back pain, but she has chronic pain in her back already, so her pain was actually lessened by being pregnant. And then finally, on March 28th, she started getting cramps and back pain that just kept getting worse. She tried to run a bath to soothe her back and her roommates cat literally lost its mind when she was alone in the bathroom (we’re convinced Taz was the only one who knew), at 9:30 pm they went to the hospital and did an ultrasound in her lower abdomen where she was having the worse pains and saw NOTHING. They told her they thought a cyst was bursting, switched to a more sensitive device to find it to make sure it wouldn’t get infected/go septic, when the device registered a second heartbeat. They returned to the ultrasound and looked higher than where her contractions actually were causing pain, and realized there was a whole ass baby in there. Problem one of many was this hospital they were at no longer had a maternity ward, so they had to be taken by ambulance to the next closest town to even have the baby. Problem two was of course no prenatal care and ensuring he was healthy. My spouse was asked to go babysit my sister in law’s younger siblings so her mother could go to the hospital with her (her dad was working well out of town and was coming home but took a couple hours). I casually slept through all of that. Didn’t find out anything until 4:30am when my spouse returned from what I thought was just going to the bathroom but was actually several hours of babysitting. She explained what was happening, and after the initial “what do you mean Liz is in labour? She’s not pregnant! I saw her 2 weeks ago!” Then fearing she was having a premie, only for her to have the baby 15 minutes later and my mother in law to message me that a baby boy was born at 7lbs 10 oz (so not a premie!). The doctors ran tests and checked him over and they cleared him as a healthy miracle baby who was okay to go home. It was incredible to watch how the family and friends rallied to provide everything they needed within 2 days. Unfortunately though, the doctors missed something again. Our miracle baby was not healthy. To their credit, it’s usually safe to assume that babies are born with brains. Especially when the cranium is not caved in. But, our ‘I didn’t know I was pregnant’ story did not have a happy ending. My nephew was born with hydro anencephaly, meaning both his head was filling with fluid, causing ridiculous pain, and his brain had not developed. He had a brain stem that kept him alive for 12 weeks and 3 days. To me, he is still a miracle, his birth is the most amazing story, and I am grateful I got to know him even if it was far too short. I miss him everyday. And I know my sister in law still blames herself for not knowing, and not being able to help him. But he still had the best mom and dad for his short life. He is still loved beyond all measures.

After having our twins, my husband and I had to attend a short class before being discharged from the hospital. In addition to talking about safe sleep practices and basic infant care, the nurse repeatedly told us "breastfeeding is not a form of birth control". She must have said it at least three times. We figured they had to have seen quite a few unplanned pregnancies to emphasize it that much.
It happens a lot more than we might think! My period didn't come back for 18 months after having my daughter. After I have this baby I really don't want another for at least 3 years and I'm already paranoid about it hahaha. How am I going to know when I need to start avoiding it?!?!
Pregnancy after multiples is really hard on the body a pregnancy back to back is hard on the body. After my twin my OBGYN and other doctors pushed me to get any kind of birth control. Was limited to non hormonal and local birth controls due to a benign liver tumor I developed from the pill. IUD was not the way to go...

Yes this is the logic I used after I had my daughter. When she was 7 months old I was still nursing, no period. Felt a little funny so I took a pregnancy test just to rule it out and low and behold I was a pregnant not only that but went to the gyno that week and learned it was twins! My daughter and my twin girls are 14 months apart..... had 3 in diapers, 3 in car seats, 3 in the stroller 😟 so it was basically like having triplets. It was very hard that first year or 2 but I wouldn’t trade it for the world! They are all healthy and 9 and 8 now 😊
My sister had twins (kids 6 and 7), then got pregnant with kid #8 before the twins were one. I think the last kid was a planned pregnancy, but the twins were not.
Me and my younger twin siblings are 16 months apart! My grandpa got me a personal nanny because he didn’t want my parents to divorce. Luckily my parents baby potty trained us, so I was out of diapers by the time the twins were born.

And I thought my mom had it rough with 3 kids age 2 1/2, 19 months, and a newborn and often thought about how much harder it would have been had my twin survived (he died in utero after a beating from my dad. He would also have been 2 1/2 at that time). But you really had it rough. I hope daddy helped and still helps if the kids are still at home (mine are grown)
My father in law had a vasectomy back in 1979. Apparently his dr. Decided it would be a good idea to take a phone call during the procedure and left the room to take it and came back to finish up. WELL.. about 6 moths later my in-laws had a follow up appointment with the doctor and my mother in law passed the doctor a confirmed positive pregnancy test from her doctors office. That was when the doctor came clean about the phone call and fix my father in law right up.. free of charge this time. Thank God for that doctor because without that botched vasectomy and unplanned pregnancy, I wouldn’t have my Husband or two amazing daughters! 😂🥰
Okay but did he have a negative sperm test? I need to know. My bf had a vasectomy and 2 negative sperm tests so I guess the doc didn’t answer the phone during it.

So you do know that a sample needs to be checked to see if the tubes have healed properly to prevent sperm from be released. Don't go for the check up then its not ever to be considered done
STORY TIME : I delivered a baby at 15 , I am now 18 and when I look back on it I kinda feel freaked but proud of myself that I didn’t run away the first chance I had. My cousin was pregnant and no one was home except me , my 6 year old brother and my 11 year old cousin .......I remember my older cousin (the mother of my 11 y/o cousin) cousin having pain and I was so confused, I immediately called for and ambulance but as I was talking to the operator he told me that I was going to have to deliver the baby as the ambulance was too far out and the contractions were less the 5 minutes apart. I was freaked and panicky as was my brother and cousin I remember shouting at my cousin to get towels etc she was scared and shaky but did it anyways...my brother hid under the sofa lol he was so scared. But just remember telling myself to focus as I had a baby that depended on me. Everything was so fast one minutes my cousin is screaming the next there’s a baby in my arms , like I had just helped deliver a whole baby.....freaky. The ambulance came soon after that and congratulated me for helping and being ‘brave’ . My mother now keeps telling me that I should try for a career as a ob as I have more experience than most do 😂😂😂 but I don’t know if could go through that stress again lol Ok I edited so hopefully it makes more sense now lol. No my 11 y/o cousin was not pregnant it was her mother who is also my cousin . Sorry for the confusion Also thanks for the likes. The baby I delivered is now 3 years old and very healthy and beautiful girl.

I currently still feel “phantom kicks” that I know now are gas pains so I can imagine how movement or kicks could feel like just has to someone who doesn’t know they’re pregnant.
I had gas pains as a teenager which set me up for disappointment when I felt my first baby kick. I was like, “damn... is that it? I know what THAT feels like!!” 🤣🤣
I often watch these "Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" videos and they kind of freak me out some times. When Doctor Jones watches them and gives facts/information, it makes the videos calm. You are crazy good at your job, lady! ❤
I've been watching Doctor Jones react to this show for a very long time now, and I always thought "there's no way this would happen to me". Well, guess what? I just found out that I was 14 weeks pregnant (I'm lucky I didn't find out at 9 months! haha) and I had no symptoms, was on birth control, had my periods until this month (which is why I did a pregnancy test, expecting to be like 4 weeks pregnant max) but no, I'm already in my second trimester! Baby is healthy and my boyfriend and I are super happy but still shocked! My baby bump showed immediately and now I'm experiencing about every symptom in the book!
I've heard the whole "you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding" when I was younger before but never heard the detailed explanation behind it. Great info!
I give these lessons to my patients too, but I specifically say that breastfeeding exclusively means every 2hours, including midnights, no excuses, for contraception to work. And yes, no pumping and if you gave birth less than 6mos ago.
@@lestatlouis47yui my obgyn also told me no pacifiers. It's a lot of work to use breastfeeding as a form of birth control. I wouldn't risk it even if I was exclusively nursing. I don't like to say exclusively breastfeeding because pumping and giving expressed milk is breastfeeding.
My daughter and son are five days less than nine months apart. I didn’t know I was pregnant with my youngest and delivered him myself in our bathroom, unwrapped the cord from his neck and clamped and cut it myself. I never understood before I had him but you can absolutely not know you are pregnant before having a baby. P.s. I gained 7 lbs which is lower than my normal winter weight I expected to gain.
No. I had sex two weeks after birth. He was premature. Born at 2 lbs 14oz. We used condoms and I asked my husband not the other way around. I have always had a good sex drive and my daughter slept a lot in her first weeks of life.
@@wintertrine some women are ready to go soon after giving birth and others need time, nothing wrong with either. A normal pregnancy is 40 weeks (counting starts from the start of the last menstruation), but this baby could also have been premature, so it might have been weeks after the birth or months.
PS- I do want to note that my first son was almost 10lbs, 28 hours of labor, 4 hours of pushing and 14 stitches I ripped from my v to my a and was induced at 41 weeks. My daughter was 6lbs 2oz, born at 37 weeks one day, no ripping, no cutting, no tearing, no stitches, five hours of labor and 25 minutes of pushing so I was in a much better position to want to have sex because she was extremely easy on my body when I delivered her. It so much depends on your birth and your body and your sex drive. I wanted to put that out there to be fair because there were reasons I was wanting sex two weeks after delivering- no one should ever compare to each other or their pregnancies because I didn’t have sex for about 4 months after my first one- it’s just all about the circumstances and what you are okay with. 💕

I'm a teen and I have a 1 year old son. I played soccer through the pregnancy, but my parents never knew I was pregnant. I was so scared to tell them, but then I did and we found out my son was growth restricted. It took only 3 weeks to get him from 3 pounds to 6 1/2 pounds at birth. He's perfectly healthy now. This is my story.
The "going into labor in the middle of the night" is for sure a thing 😂 my poor mom went into labor with me (only child) at 5AM and woke up because her water broke; tried to smack my dad awake saying "I'm in labor!" .. in which my half-asleep father responded "oh that's nice" then went back to sleep 😂 but I was born just 6 hours later!
When ever you get a chance you should definitely react to The Resident Season 2 Episode 20: "If Not Now, When ?" It is probably one of the most profound episodes on racial discrepancy in pregnant patients I have ever seen. Really powerful stuff.
Gotta say, this is the first "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" where I could wholeheartedly understand how they missed it. Really, her weight gain seemed to be her only pregnancy symptom, and even that had a reasonable explanation (thanks, grandma!). And I guess the reason she never had a period because that very FIRST post-partum egg got fertilized right away! :D This one brought me to tears... I can't imagine having gone through so many miscarriages, and then nearly losing a baby that you didn't even know you were carrying! I'm so relieved baby Abigail pulled through-- any loss of an infant is tragic, but for a couple who'd been through what they'd been through already, I imagine that would be devastating. That old shoe probably saved her baby's life! Mama Doctor Jones, Is cord avulsion a common thing, or was this likely a side effect of the fall? My understanding was that the umbilical cord was pretty tough and stretchy.
@@SaraS-jq1ln besides the fact that periods are often very erratic after birth, breastfeeding can also stop your period for a while. That's where the misconception that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding comes from, just because you haven't had your period yet doesn't mean you haven't ovulated. Which is exactly what happened to the lady in the episode.
I didnt know until I was almost 5 months and went to urgent care for what I thought was a bladder infection. I hadn't had a period in 3 years due to being on the depo shot, and I had previously lost over 100lbs and had a lot of loose skin on my stomache. I didn't feel kicks, didnt swell, and didnt have morning sickness AT ALL. My husband and I had been together for years and we had a spare room that we talked about becoming a nursery someday. There would have been no reason to keep it a secret if I had known. People still had doubts, and that hurt for awhile. Pregnancy feels different for EVERYONE. Even with my 2nd pregnancy (twins) I had ALMOST no symptoms. I had 2 days of flu like symptoms with vomiting and then NOTHING for the rest of the pregnancy. I delivered 2 breech baby's via c section weighing 6lbs, and 6lb 12oz. NO swelling ever, no Braxton hicks (sp?), and no morning sickness after the 2 days I felt like I had the flu after I conceived.

But my aunt and uncle are "Irish twins" (same bday one year apart) and my grandmother breastfed, and my brother is only a year and 3mo older than me and he breastfed for a year... My oldest 2 are 1yr 11 days apart I fell pregnant second child 3 months after had first. I must admit was horrendous pregnancy I was in hospital twice week from 30 weeks. She was born 39+6 but measured 2 weeks behind i had high blood pressure hence monitoring they never confirmed pre eclampsia but I had high protein in urine at 30 weeks and overnight stay and meds started. She was fine and healthy just me that had issues haha.ooo she was a super fast labour o shocked the midwives who didn't think I was so far in labour we never made it to delivery room she was born in the room I was put In on admittance.
I was still breast feeding my daughter when I got pregnant with my 4 th child. I never had any periods after my daughter's birth, and we were using contraception - I didn't know I was pregnant for sure until the 20th week because I had been to my doctor with my suspicions and he dismissed them and told me that I wouldn't be pregnant because my baby was still fully breastfed and my periods hadn't returned. I eventually went to see the midwife I had had for the births of my other babies and she confirmed that I was 20 weeks+/- 5 days. There's only 10 months age difference between my daughter and youngest son - they have their birthdays in the same year! My pregnancy and birth with my son was completely normal and he weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces. This was in the 1980s.
It’s interesting that they talked about newborn babies crying with an accent. I just learned in my language class that babies can code switch in the womb.
My mom's french and my dad's english and I was taught that it takes a newborn baby 2 hours to learn to distinguish between two different languages. As soon as I started saying words I always used the correct language with the correct person.
@monny287 I hear music in several different languages and I'd love the idea of my future child being still a baby but able to be like- There she is with the Italian music again.
I had two miscarriages before my oldest was born, three between him and his little brother, and another two between my younger son and the litter girl my husband and I are currently expecting. It's hard... But absolutely worth it, because in the end, you appreciate your children that much more because it was that much more work and perseverance to have them.
Wow, you've had 7 miscarriages? That's rough. I had 3 miscarriages and 5 babies. My first miscarriage was in between my 3rd and 4th child. Then I had 2 more miscarriages between my 4th and 5th child. It's physically and emotionally painful and my sympathy goes out to everyone who has gone through that.
As a mom who’s dealt with secondary infertility, I cried happy tears hearing that sweet girl survived. Also what a sweet family, you can just feel their love
@@carultch Secondary infertility is the term used for women who don’t struggle with getting pregnant, but instead struggle with staying pregnant after conceiving.
I got pregnant while exclusively breastfeeding. My doctor told me the same thing about breastfeeding being very effective but when my son was 5 months old I got pregnant with my daughter! I did have a regular cycle that returned 6 weeks after my 1st was born. No one told me that I could get pregnant if my period had returned to normal 🤦🏻♀️
Regarding the labor at night: I do remember my water broke with my daughter at about 1:30 am. We had literally just gotten home from a NYE party and I was standing at my vanity taking off my makeup.
A W I had a very similar situation with my daughter, my body was stressed out and I had my daughter a week and a half ahead of schedule, she was very jaundice and starving because I have really flat nipples and she has a receding chin, between the two we couldn’t get a decent latch and she cried around the clock and never got enough to eat, her skin and eye color got more and more yellow, finally we took her to the emergency room and they told us she was starving since she had blood tinged urine and not much wet or and no poopy diapers, so we had to start feeding her formula and work with lactation consultants on latch, they gave me nipple shields and that helped a lot but for some reason because we had to feed her formula from the beginning and had so many problems with latch, I never established a good supply and now 4 months later I’m all dried up, so I would very much agree with getting help from the get go and not waiting to resolve your issues
My mom was still breastfeeding me when my sister was conceived (also she was on the pill, but she did have a stomach bug shortly before my sister was conceived). My second nephew also was conceived when his older brother was still breastfeeding. (In fact my mother suspected my sister-in-law was pregnant before my SIL, because my 10 month old nephew suddenly completely refused to breastfeed anymore and my mom said I'd done the same when mom was pregnant with my sister)
I never really thought about it like that, but my two oldest are 19 months apart and my son weaned himself right about when his sister was conceived! That's interesting!
@@ladyrepunsel4567 It isn't uncommon for a child to self-wean during a subsequent pregnancy due to changes in the mother's milk brought about by the change in hormones. My youngest daughter continued to breastfeed up until about a month before my youngest son was born, likely due to the milk changing to prepare to switch back to colostrum for the new baby.
Thats how my mom knew she was pregnant with me. My brother got sort of an upset stomach and she was like I'm pregnant 😂😂😂 she said it was because she had already started producing calostrum and not actual milk I don't know if that's possible
The amount of people who think you can’t get pregnant while breastfeeding baffles me. If you have sex, you can get pregnant. I’m surprised her OB would recommend it. None of the doctors I’ve ever had have said that breastfeeding is an effective form of birth control.
I think these episodes are rather old. My mom got that recommendation, too. (And immeadiately got pregnant again.) There was probably some kind if research at some point that made it seem easy and safe and nobody questioned it. A bit srupid of course: There used to be no other option than breastfeeding and people still kept getting pregnant all the time with kids just years apart.
The Deco Cottage I think a lot of people think that because some women don’t have a cycle during breastfeeding. However, I always got my cycle back like 7 weeks PP even though I was nursing.
@n grose except, clearly, that's not an accurate statement, and you CAN get pregnant without having had a cycle, because we just saw that's what happened to her. Also, it happened to me. There are young girls who get pregnant without ever having had a period, because they had sex and got pregnant their VERY FIRST time ovulating.
@n grose Once you've menstruated your body has tipped you off that your cycle has started again, but before that you could become pregnant without completing a full cycle. Certainly if exclusive breastfeeding is the only birth control available to a person it can't hurt to try. But everyone should understand how it works and the risk involved, and consider using other forms of protection.
I have always been that one person to say "how could they not know?" But I am currently pregnant with my second baby after trying to conceive for a little over 3 years, dealing with secondary infertility and one potential miscarriage (it was different from my regular cycles and later than usual). With my son I knew I was pregnant because of symptoms and a positive pregnancy test at about 5 weeks. This time I knew because of some of the same symptoms and a positive pregnancy test at 4 weeks. However I only had morning sickness until i was 6 weeks pregnant but was never sick. From then to now I do not feel pregnant at all. I am 14 weeks pregnant now and if I had not taken a test or knew my cycle I, to this day, would not think I was pregnant because I have zero symptoms. So now I get how some people wouldn't know. And a lot of women have a symptom where the placenta sits at the from of the stomach making to where you cant feel kicks much if at all.
I didn't learn that i was pregnant until i went to ER thinking I was having a heart attack or stoke; and then they didn't tell me how far along i was. It was until i saw my OB/GYN; that is when I learned that i was 22 weeks along. I was SHOCKED both at the ER and my doctor's office. I was having my normal HEAVY cycles every month from 7 to 14 days. Gained no weight, had no sickness, no sore breast, etc. I was tired but i at the time was working 16 hours shifts 5 days a week. Who wouldn't be exhausted. But my son was a total surprise and a BLESSING.

I actually had a friend that didn’t know she was pregnant and had her baby in the hospital parking lot still inside the sack. Absolutely crazy. She didn’t gain weight, have any other symptoms, and she had a baby about a year before.
My mom had 0 symptoms when pregnant with my brother and also when she was expecting me. Like, if it weren't for the extra pounds and the lack of period she wouldn't had notice. And I know of people who don't gained any weight.
Besides heartburn and a bit of round ligament pain, I didn't have any symptoms with either of my pregnancies either. No morning sickness, cravings, or mood swings.
This is absolutely amazing to me. My mother in law is like this - no symptoms and 6 kids 18 months apart! Me? My life is upended, most of my time is in bed nauseous, and everyone asks if it’s twins by 5 months in bc I am HUGE. I couldn’t miss a pregnancy if I tried!
I'm a mother of 3 adults, and suferred so many menstrual problems (complete hysterectomy at 27yo). My daughter's both have many of my issues and more. The lack of care and frustration because there is no quality care available is depressing. My girls and myself suffer through so much because it is overwhelming to try to find/get good care. You have taught me more about my body in 4 episodes than I ever knew! We need more doctors who are willing to teach, explain, empathize! Your patients are so incredibly blessed!
I breastfed all my children fully, had my period everytime after three month. In Germany they Always say, that breastfeeding is never an Option For contraception
With all those stipulations on breastfeeding being a contraception method, it seems like it is better just to play it safe, and stick to other methods.
@@joywebster2678 The problem is that you ovulate first then have your period. So you breastfeed and don't have your period. All good. But then that first egg comes and you have no idea. But up till that point it works. So it's natures way of protecting the women's body. And before birthcontrol it was all women could do.

So why not educate patients how the body works. Women can track their ovulation with devices even when breastfeeding. Why not encourage that instead of an IUD or the Mini Pill. In my experience health care providers are often scarred of natural family planning and have a peace of mind when they prescribed you something.
If the newborn was that premature I can see why she didn't feel it moving. If you're not actively trying to feel the baby kicking, the movements can be very light at that stage. I'm at 35 weeks now and didn't really start to feel strong movements until like 30/32 weeks. Before that it was just flutters and if I didn't know I was pregnant I probably would have thought it was gas.
When I was a teenager, I only experienced nausea and pelvic pains when I had my period. But now as an adult if I didn't sleep well, I get nauseous in the morning. A lot of the pregnant symptoms can be ignored if you don't think you're pregnant
My first, third and fourth pregnancies had very active babies that I could feel and even watch move inside of my belly. It was a completely different experience with my second one. I had all the regular symptoms, including missed cycles, but my little boy moved so infrequently, that I sometimes thought it was just a nerve jumping under my skin. I would feel him move once, and then not again until 1 or two days later, And the kicks/punches would always be so light, that it's possible I actually slept through a few of them. Some babies are very inactive, and when people ask me what the kicks feel like, I always described them as a hiccup/nerve jump combo.
My mother knew she was pregnant when I was coming, and she's told me that she'd get scared because I wouldn't move as much as my sister would. I mean every pregnancy is different.
Thank you for touching on miscarriage. I would love to see a whole video on it. I miscarried earlier this year and we decided it would be best for me to go back on birth control pills for now as we have a few changes that began in our lives (for the better!) after our miscarriage. But it's such an important topic to discuss and I made the decision to post about it on social media because I know it's more common than it's discussed. I am mostly at peace with ours but it still catches me off guard how deeply it still affects me when my emotions creep up on me say, on Mother's Day recently. Please please please, make a video about miscarriage though, I can't imagine how many women it would help. Love you and your content so much Dr Jones, keep it up!
My own mom had an extremely rough pregnancy with my older sister, and was sick to the point of being hospitalized because she just threw everything up. She couldn't even keep water down, and on top of that the labor process was a long and hard one for her. I remember seeing pictures of her after that labor and she was just completely pale from how hard it was. think she was also sick with me, but not as bad and the labor actually happened so fast the doctor didn't even make it to the room on time, so she got a break there lol. I just think it's an interesting example of how pregnancies can be different.

Highly doubt it, I for one can not stop throwing up for the life of me, currently on my second pregnancy and last one I threw up for 7+ months... so far now I'm on prescriptive medication for it and I still throw up a few times a week (at 5 months) that's not a symptom you can fake or ignore :/ it's just that some people have more diffuse symptoms, and yes ofc to some extent awareness will help you understand what you feel rather than dissregard it.
Maybe for some but definitely not for everyone. I only found out I was pregnant because of the symptoms. I was sick 24x7 for the first 15 weeks, it was pretty miserable but it was what made think "oh, maybe I'm pregnant" and lo and behold, I was.
I found out relatively early on in my pregnancies and for 2/5 of them, the only symptoms I had were missed periods. I feel like a lot of the most common symptoms can be dismissed as something else if you're not paying attention to them a whole instead of focusing on them individually

There is SO much misinformation circulating on using breastfeeding as birth control, so many people literally think that just breastfeeding is enough, ignoring the fact that there are specific circumstances that must be followed inorder for it to be effective. Thankyou so much for not disregarding it or saying that it doesn't work or exist as a temporary valid method of birth control post baby. ❤️

My boyfriend and his brother are only 11 months apart. I always assumed this was probably down to their mum assuming she wouldn't get pregnant again from breastfeeding. I know it wasn't intentional!
I have a friend couple who have boys 10 1/2 months apart. Both wife and hubby had protection when she got pregnant with the second. They were utterly shocked to say the least.

I've been pregnant 8 times. Five babies and three miscarriages. I had my first child on my 19th birthday. My second child was born two weeks before I turned 22. My third child was born when I was 24 and I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma when I was 8 months pregnant during that pregnancy. I had to start chemo 2 weeks after he was born and I did chemo for 5 months followed by 15 days of radiation. 2 1/2 years later, I got pregnant again. I actually took a pregnancy test a day before I was expecting to get my period because after already having 3 babies, I just had that feeling that I was pregnant. So, I found out I was pregnant pretty early. A week later I started bleeding and had a miscarriage. I went to the hospital 3 times during the first 72 hours after the miscarriage started so that they could keep checking my hormone level to make sure it was going down like it should. I had a follow up appointment a few days later just for a checkup. I had another appointment 4 weeks after that to get on birth control. The day before that appointment I had that feeling again so I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. I went to my appointment the next day and told them I needed a pregnancy test. It was also positive but the dr didn't believe I was pregnant because he said I wouldn't be fertile so soon after having a miscarriage. So, he decided to do a blood test and sure enough I was in fact pregnant again. That baby was my biggest baby and the only one that I wasn't induced into labor with early. She was a week late and I went into labor on my own. I got pregnant again when she was 9 months old. When I went to the dr at 8 weeks for an ultrasound, there was no heartbeat and I miscarried on my own a couple of days later. Fast forward 7 years and I got pregnant again. Once again I went to the dr at 8 weeks for an ultrasound and all they could see was an empty amniotic sac. I miscarried that pregnancy on my own again a couple of days later. 10 months later I got pregnant again and that baby was born a month after I turned 37. He is 6 years old now.

My mom is a 911 operator and she said her team gets probably one home birth call a week? And they love them. “99% of the time you get to hear the baby cry at the end and it’s amazing”
I'm not sure which videos (I've watched so many at this point!), but thank you so much for showing it is okay as a medical professional to not have an immediate answer for everything. There is so much power in using evidence-based medical journals with current research to best answer questions. That is what I always taught in school (Speech-Language pathology), and it is so refreshing to see in videos!
I'm a SAHM now, but in my "previous life" I was an L&D nurse. I love your videos. They're entertaining and very educational. I enjoy "calling it" before you get a chance to pause the video and do it. I fall squarely into the breastfeeding as an incredibly effective source of birth control group. Even after my babies start on solids, I don't ovulate until about 9-12 months after giving birth. Knowing that, I would still never tell people that breastfeeding is 98% effective and to not worry about the other 2%. That seems so irresponsible of that provider. It's the job of those in healthcare to educate patients in all aspects and all possible outcomes.
My mom claims that she almost didn't feel me move at all. If she hadn't known she was pregnant with me, she probably wouldn't have noticed. Meanwhile, I'm 8 months along now and my baby is crazy active. I don't think there's any way I could mistake her kicks for anything else, bar an actual alien growing inside me.
parvanaturalia yeah, my daughter (who is now 4 1/2 months old) kicked me like crazy, one time I was resting a plate against my belly and she kicked it so hard it sent the chips flying off of my plate onto the floor, I have actual video clips of my belly moving, it looks like she was about to burst through my skin! Not to mention that even though I only gained 9 pounds my entire pregnancy, my belly got absolutely enormous, people kept thinking I was going to have triplets or something! LoL

From the very first time I felt movement when I was pregnant with my son u called him a face hugger. He was crazy active and I kept playing scenes from the alien movies over and over. I swear he squirmed like he was jacked up on mountain dew from the time I was 17 weeks to today he's still super wiggly! He's 5 months old and I still call him face hugger. It blows my mind when people say they felt hardly any movement!

Doctor here, though I stay as far away from OB/GYN as possible :D I have always had low blood pressure. With 90/60, I worked 36 hours in the hospital. In my first pregnancy, it went even lower 😂 My second pregnancy, I got covid in the very first weeks. Then I had a dental emergency that required dental surgery - my upper right third molar was messed up pretty badly and was causing trigeminal neuralgia - pain worse than contractions, C-sections, kidney stones or broken toes - worst pain of my life. In the hospital they provided only epinephrine anesthesia. All of this lead to a partial detachment of the geatational sac. Since I had one miscarriage before, I was put on bedrest, along with dysrogesterone, spamolitics and magbesium . After a few weeks, everything was fine, I was finally calm and enjoying my pregnancy. My blood pressure was so low, around 70/40, since it was a hot summer. But then, at 17 weeks, I started having a real bad headache that felt different from my migraines. Good thing I am a doctor who is married to a doctor and with mom who is a doctor, so we caught early on that I was rocketing on 160/100. They started me on methyldopa and magnesium. One thing I noticed later on was my blood pressure was high only when I sat. While I was laying down or atanding up, it was normal. Over the course of the pregnancy, they lowered my dose of methyldopa to the bare minimum. I was very closely monitored, the baby was growing perfectly, the doppler was great, no blood in my urine, perfect bloodwork except a little anemia, no swelling. I was carrying the baby very, very high on my body, it was practically in my diaphragm. I could barely eat. I gained a total of 4 kg. till I delivered a 3,5kg baby at 37w5d 😂My BP after delivery was my normal one, 90/60. Looking back at it, me and my husband think the little guy was putting pressure on something when I was sitting down, and I did not actually have preeclampsia. As a kidney girl, I am thinking about renal arteries, my husband thinks another blood vessel, my mom thinks it was something related to the adrenal glands. Anyway, I was so, so lucky that I only got high blood pressure and easily managed it, instead of full blown preeclampsia or eclampsia. It would be really great for me if you could tell me if you, as an experienced obstetrician, think our theory about why I had high blood pressure has some merit.

One of my friends had her 3rd child and didn't know she was pregnant until around 23 weeks. She was breastfeeding her 2nd baby and never had a period. One morning she woke up feeling like she had the flu or something and the doctor decided to run a test. It came back positive.
This is very interesting....I had severe ADHD when I was younger, and I had a ton of energy all the time which made it impossible to sit still, and I used to get a surge of energy every evening and have to exercise before bed or I wouldn't be able to sleep and would be up all night, hyper. (I still get that way sometimes now, at 31, but not as much as I used to.) My mom told me that I was like that even before I was born, that when she was pregnant with me I moved around like crazy, especially at night. Then when she was pregnant with my brother two years later, she said she wondered if he was alive because he hardly moved around at all. We were both born full-term and alive and healthy. lol I think it's funny now because I hear people saying that boys are more active...but my mom tells me I was way more active than my brother. She didn't know I was more active than normal since I was her first.
When my mom watches these she's always floored because when she was pregnant with my siblings they were like, the most active babies in the goddamn world.
I am a grandma from Australia, my son is 27 now and my baby. i had placenta praevia grade 4 and was lucky with Gods Grace we made it through i never bled out till my c section and had 7 blood transfusions and they lost me during surgery and again in recovery, they said it was 2 code blues and they had taken me into hospital 3 months prior the birth, you are way to young but your the sort of person i would love to had around, you are lovely. It was terrifying.
Honestly, a lot of pregnancy symptoms would be masked by having a newborn. Tiredness? Check. Sore breasts? Check. Extra belly weight? Check. Irregular periods? Check. Hormonal shifts? Check.

Not only that but when your told its normal to have symtopms like that and that you defiantly won't get pregnant. You don't watch for other signs. Movement could be attributed to gas. Especially if the baby does not move that much.
Plus if your placenta is at the front (like mine was for both my pregnancies) it can mask the baby's moments a fair bit. In this case I can completely understand how she didn't know.
@@jamieharrison4142 And then there's me. I am an RN and have had a bunch of kids (I'm pregnant with the 5th). I know exactly what early fetal movement feels like. I swear that I have "phantom baby kicks" in between kids. It legitimately feels like a baby early on, and it super messes with me haha
I agree too! Fun fact: One of the ob doctors on this episode of "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" addressed the fact that pregnancy symptoms can be masked in women who have given birth less than a year before becoming pregnant again. Doctor Jones did not show that part of the episode.

I think if there's ever a time you would miss pregnancy, it's post partum. I lost weight initially then gained, my periods returned after 9 months but I had aches and pains like period pain before that. My hormones were all over the place and I was exhausted. With a newborn, you don't have time to think about yourself as much so you definitely could miss any of the normal symptoms.

The parents seem nice, but the heartwarmingness was kind of ruined for me by the fact that the child probably has some kind of permanent damage (either from the mother unknowingly having such a terrible diet while pregnant and then giving birth so prematurely, or the treatments they had to give the baby for months to keep her alive, and/or from being dropped on her head at such a young age) which all would have been prevented if an OBGYN hadn't given out misinformation to a patient.

As someone who is newly pregnant I definitely can’t miss the fact that I am. The nausea (which ironically is the least pervasive in the morning) is unreal, I would be convinced I was dying if I didn’t know.
However, my sister in law had no idea she was pregnant. She had milder but seemingly regular bleeding, which she assumed was her period. She did gain weight, but she carried towards her back so she didn’t get the belly at all, and him being so far back cushioned a lot of the movement, so she didn’t feel him move. (Apparently her mother carried her the same). Her hips widened and that was the only physical change of her being pregnant, but even it was so minor that no one thought anything of it. Near the end she started to have swelling of hands and feet, seemingly when she had caffeine so she went to doctors who ran tests and everything came back normal so they said just avoid caffeine. She did experience some back pain, but she has chronic pain in her back already, so her pain was actually lessened by being pregnant. And then finally, on March 28th, she started getting cramps and back pain that just kept getting worse. She tried to run a bath to soothe her back and her roommates cat literally lost its mind when she was alone in the bathroom (we’re convinced Taz was the only one who knew), at 9:30 pm they went to the hospital and did an ultrasound in her lower abdomen where she was having the worse pains and saw NOTHING. They told her they thought a cyst was bursting, switched to a more sensitive device to find it to make sure it wouldn’t get infected/go septic, when the device registered a second heartbeat. They returned to the ultrasound and looked higher than where her contractions actually were causing pain, and realized there was a whole ass baby in there. Problem one of many was this hospital they were at no longer had a maternity ward, so they had to be taken by ambulance to the next closest town to even have the baby. Problem two was of course no prenatal care and ensuring he was healthy.
My spouse was asked to go babysit my sister in law’s younger siblings so her mother could go to the hospital with her (her dad was working well out of town and was coming home but took a couple hours). I casually slept through all of that. Didn’t find out anything until 4:30am when my spouse returned from what I thought was just going to the bathroom but was actually several hours of babysitting. She explained what was happening, and after the initial “what do you mean Liz is in labour? She’s not pregnant! I saw her 2 weeks ago!” Then fearing she was having a premie, only for her to have the baby 15 minutes later and my mother in law to message me that a baby boy was born at 7lbs 10 oz (so not a premie!). The doctors ran tests and checked him over and they cleared him as a healthy miracle baby who was okay to go home. It was incredible to watch how the family and friends rallied to provide everything they needed within 2 days.
Unfortunately though, the doctors missed something again. Our miracle baby was not healthy. To their credit, it’s usually safe to assume that babies are born with brains. Especially when the cranium is not caved in. But, our ‘I didn’t know I was pregnant’ story did not have a happy ending. My nephew was born with hydro anencephaly, meaning both his head was filling with fluid, causing ridiculous pain, and his brain had not developed. He had a brain stem that kept him alive for 12 weeks and 3 days. To me, he is still a miracle, his birth is the most amazing story, and I am grateful I got to know him even if it was far too short. I miss him everyday. And I know my sister in law still blames herself for not knowing, and not being able to help him. But he still had the best mom and dad for his short life. He is still loved beyond all measures.

After having our twins, my husband and I had to attend a short class before being discharged from the hospital. In addition to talking about safe sleep practices and basic infant care, the nurse repeatedly told us "breastfeeding is not a form of birth control". She must have said it at least three times. We figured they had to have seen quite a few unplanned pregnancies to emphasize it that much.
It happens a lot more than we might think! My period didn't come back for 18 months after having my daughter. After I have this baby I really don't want another for at least 3 years and I'm already paranoid about it hahaha. How am I going to know when I need to start avoiding it?!?!

Pregnancy after multiples is really hard on the body a pregnancy back to back is hard on the body. After my twin my OBGYN and other doctors pushed me to get any kind of birth control. Was limited to non hormonal and local birth controls due to a benign liver tumor I developed from the pill. IUD was not the way to go...
Yep. Or more accurately, it is until it isn't. This mother likely got pregnant on her first ovulation, no period to tell her she was fertile again!

Yes this is the logic I used after I had my daughter. When she was 7 months old I was still nursing, no period. Felt a little funny so I took a pregnancy test just to rule it out and low and behold I was a pregnant not only that but went to the gyno that week and learned it was twins! My daughter and my twin girls are 14 months apart..... had 3 in diapers, 3 in car seats, 3 in the stroller 😟 so it was basically like having triplets. It was very hard that first year or 2 but I wouldn’t trade it for the world! They are all healthy and 9 and 8 now 😊

My sister had twins (kids 6 and 7), then got pregnant with kid #8 before the twins were one. I think the last kid was a planned pregnancy, but the twins were not.
Me and my younger twin siblings are 16 months apart! My grandpa got me a personal nanny because he didn’t want my parents to divorce. Luckily my parents baby potty trained us, so I was out of diapers by the time the twins were born.

And I thought my mom had it rough with 3 kids age 2 1/2, 19 months, and a newborn and often thought about how much harder it would have been had my twin survived (he died in utero after a beating from my dad. My father in law had a vasectomy back in 1979. Apparently his dr. Decided it would be a good idea to take a phone call during the procedure and left the room to take it and came back to finish up. WELL.. about 6 moths later my in-laws had a follow up appointment with the doctor and my mother in law passed the doctor a confirmed positive pregnancy test from her doctors office. That was when the doctor came clean about the phone call and fix my father in law right up.. free of charge this time. Thank God for that doctor because without that botched vasectomy and unplanned pregnancy, I wouldn’t have my Husband or two amazing daughters! 😂🥰

So you do know that a sample needs to be checked to see if the tubes have healed properly to prevent sperm from be released. Don't go for the check up then its not ever to be considered done
STORY TIME : I delivered a baby at 15 , I am now 18 and when I look back on it I kinda feel freaked but proud of myself that I didn’t run away the first chance I had. My cousin was pregnant and no one was home except me , my 6 year old brother and my 11 year old cousin .......I remember my older cousin (the mother of my 11 y/o cousin) cousin having pain and I was so confused, I immediately called for and ambulance but as I was talking to the operator he told me that I was going to have to deliver the baby as the ambulance was too far out and the contractions were less the 5 minutes apart. I was freaked and panicky as was my brother and cousin I remember shouting at my cousin to get towels etc she was scared and shaky but did it anyways...my brother hid under the sofa lol he was so scared. But just remember telling myself to focus as I had a baby that depended on me. Everything was so fast one minutes my cousin is screaming the next there’s a baby in my arms , like I had just helped deliver a whole baby.....freaky. The ambulance came soon after that and congratulated me for helping and being ‘brave’ . My mother now keeps telling me that I should try for a career as a ob as I have more experience than most do 😂😂😂 but I don’t know if could go through that stress again lol

I've been watching Doctor Jones react to this show for a very long time now, and I always thought "there's no way this would happen to me". Well, guess what? I just found out that I was 14 weeks pregnant (I'm lucky I didn't find out at 9 months! haha) and I had no symptoms, was on birth control, had my periods until this month (which is why I did a pregnancy test, expecting to be like 4 weeks pregnant max) but no, I'm already in my second trimester! Baby is healthy and my boyfriend and I are super happy but still shocked! My baby bump showed immediately and now I'm experiencing about every symptom in the book!
It makes me so happy to see people who adore their children. Totally teared up a little.
These parents are the more heartwarming bunch that I've seen than some of these videos.
I've heard the whole "you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding" when I was younger before but never heard the detailed explanation behind it. Great info!
I give these lessons to my patients too, but I specifically say that breastfeeding exclusively means every 2hours, including midnights, no excuses, for contraception to work. And yes, no pumping and if you gave birth less than 6mos ago.
@@lestatlouis47yui my obgyn also told me no pacifiers. It's a lot of work to use breastfeeding as a form of birth control. I wouldn't risk it even if I was exclusively nursing. I don't like to say exclusively breastfeeding because pumping and giving expressed milk is breastfeeding.

I didn’t know I was pregnant with my youngest and delivered him myself in our bathroom, unwrapped the cord from his neck and clamped and cut it myself.
I never understood before I had him but you can absolutely not know you are pregnant before having a baby.

We used condoms and I asked my husband not the other way around.

A normal pregnancy is 40 weeks (counting starts from the start of the last menstruation), but this baby could also have been premature, so it might have been weeks after the birth or months.
PS- I do want to note that my first son was almost 10lbs, 28 hours of labor, 4 hours of pushing and 14 stitches I ripped from my v to my a and was induced at 41 weeks.
My daughter was 6lbs 2oz, born at 37 weeks one day, no ripping, no cutting, no tearing, no stitches, five hours of labor and 25 minutes of pushing so I was in a much better position to want to have sex because she was extremely easy on my body when I delivered her.
It so much depends on your birth and your body and your sex drive.
I wanted to put that out there to be fair because there were reasons I was wanting sex two weeks after delivering- no one should ever compare to each other or their pregnancies because I didn’t have sex for about 4 months after my first one- it’s just all about the circumstances and what you are okay with.

I'm a teen and I have a 1 year old son. I played soccer through the pregnancy, but my parents never knew I was pregnant. I was so scared to tell them, but then I did and we found out my son was growth restricted. It took only 3 weeks to get him from 3 pounds to 6 1/2 pounds at birth. He's perfectly healthy now. This is my story.
The "going into labor in the middle of the night" is for sure a thing 😂 my poor mom went into labor with me (only child) at 5AM and woke up because her water broke; tried to smack my dad awake saying "I'm in labor!" .. in which my half-asleep father responded "oh that's nice" then went back to sleep 😂 but I was born just 6 hours later!

Gotta say, this is the first "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" where I could wholeheartedly understand how they missed it. Really, her weight gain seemed to be her only pregnancy symptom, and even that had a reasonable explanation (thanks, grandma!). And I guess the reason she never had a period because that very FIRST post-partum egg got fertilized right away! :D
This one brought me to tears... I can't imagine having gone through so many miscarriages, and then nearly losing a baby that you didn't even know you were carrying! I'm so relieved baby Abigail pulled through-- any loss of an infant is tragic, but for a couple who'd been through what they'd been through already, I imagine that would be devastating. That old shoe probably saved her baby's life!
Mama Doctor Jones, Is cord avulsion a common thing, or was this likely a side effect of the fall? My understanding was that the umbilical cord was pretty tough and stretchy.

@@SaraS-jq1ln besides the fact that periods are often very erratic after birth, breastfeeding can also stop your period for a while. That's where the misconception that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding comes from, just because you haven't had your period yet doesn't mean you haven't ovulated. Which is exactly what happened to the lady in the episode.
I didnt know until I was almost 5 months and went to urgent care for what I thought was a bladder infection. I hadn't had a period in 3 years due to being on the depo shot, and I had previously lost over 100lbs and had a lot of loose skin on my stomache. I didn't feel kicks, didnt swell, and didnt have morning sickness AT ALL. My husband and I had been together for years and we had a spare room that we talked about becoming a nursery someday. There would have been no reason to keep it a secret if I had known. People still had doubts, and that hurt for awhile. Pregnancy feels different for EVERYONE. Even with my 2nd pregnancy (twins) I had ALMOST no symptoms. I had 2 days of flu like symptoms with vomiting and then NOTHING for the rest of the pregnancy. I delivered 2 breech baby's via c section weighing 6lbs, and 6lb 12oz. NO swelling ever, no Braxton hicks (sp?), and no morning sickness after the 2 days I felt like I had the flu after I conceived.
Omg when she said the baby fell into her shoe my heart stopped. So happy the baby survived!

My oldest 2 are 1yr 11 days apart I fell pregnant second child 3 months after had first. I must admit was horrendous pregnancy I was in hospital twice week from 30 weeks. She was born 39+6 but measured 2 weeks behind i had high blood pressure hence monitoring they never confirmed pre eclampsia but I had high protein in urine at 30 weeks and overnight stay and meds
started. She was fine and healthy just me that had issues haha.ooo she was a super fast labour o shocked the midwives who didn't think I was so far in labour we never made it to delivery room she was born in the room I was put In on admittance.

I was still breast feeding my daughter when I got pregnant with my 4 th child.
I never had any periods after my daughter's birth, and we were using contraception - I didn't know I was pregnant for sure until the 20th week because I had been to my doctor with my suspicions and he dismissed them and told me that I wouldn't be pregnant because my baby was still fully breastfed and my periods hadn't returned.
I eventually went to see the midwife I had had for the births of my other babies and she confirmed that I was 20 weeks+/- 5 days.
There's only 10 months age difference between my daughter and youngest son - they have their birthdays in the same year!
My pregnancy and birth with my son was completely normal and he weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces.
This was in the 1980s.

My mom's french and my dad's english and I was taught that it takes a newborn baby 2 hours to learn to distinguish between two different languages. As soon as I started saying words I always used the correct language with the correct person.

I had two miscarriages before my oldest was born, three between him and his little brother, and another two between my younger son and the litter girl my husband and I are currently expecting.
It's hard... But absolutely worth it, because in the end, you appreciate your children that much more because it was that much more work and perseverance to have them.

Wow, you've had 7 miscarriages? That's rough. I had 3 miscarriages and 5 babies. My first miscarriage was in between my 3rd and 4th child. Then I had 2 more miscarriages between my 4th and 5th child. It's physically and emotionally painful and my sympathy goes out to everyone who has gone through that.

I got pregnant while exclusively breastfeeding. My doctor told me the same thing about breastfeeding being very effective but when my son was 5 months old I got pregnant with my daughter! I did have a regular cycle that returned 6 weeks after my 1st was born. No one told me that I could get pregnant if my period had returned to normal 🤦🏻♀️

Regarding the labor at night: I do remember my water broke with my daughter at about 1:30 am. We had literally just gotten home from a NYE party and I was standing at my vanity taking off my makeup.
with my second pregnancy, my water broke at 7:30 pm.
A W I had a very similar situation with my daughter, my body was stressed out and I had my daughter a week and a half ahead of schedule, she was very jaundice and starving because I have really flat nipples and she has a receding chin, between the two we couldn’t get a decent latch and she cried around the clock and never got enough to eat, her skin and eye color got more and more yellow, finally we took her to the emergency room and they told us she was starving since she had blood tinged urine and not much wet or and no poopy diapers, so we had to start feeding her formula and work with lactation consultants on latch, they gave me nipple shields and that helped a lot but for some reason because we had to feed her formula from the beginning and had so many problems with latch, I never established a good supply and now 4 months later I’m all dried up, so I would very much agree with getting help from the get go and not waiting to resolve your issues

My mom was still breastfeeding me when my sister was conceived (also she was on the pill, but she did have a stomach bug shortly before my sister was conceived). My second nephew also was conceived when his older brother was still breastfeeding. (In fact my mother suspected my sister-in-law was pregnant before my SIL, because my 10 month old nephew suddenly completely refused to breastfeed anymore and my mom said I'd done the same when mom was pregnant with my sister)
I never really thought about it like that, but my two oldest are 19 months apart and my son weaned himself right about when his sister was conceived! That's interesting!

@@ladyrepunsel4567 It isn't uncommon for a child to self-wean during a subsequent pregnancy due to changes in the mother's milk brought about by the change in hormones. My youngest daughter continued to breastfeed up until about a month before my youngest son was born, likely due to the milk changing to prepare to switch back to colostrum for the new baby.

I’m surprised her OB would recommend it. None of the doctors I’ve ever had have said that breastfeeding is an effective form of birth control.
I think these episodes are rather old. My mom got that recommendation, too. (And immeadiately got pregnant again.) There was probably some kind if research at some point that made it seem easy and safe and nobody questioned it. A bit srupid of course: There used to be no other option than breastfeeding and people still kept getting pregnant all the time with kids just years apart.
The Deco Cottage I think a lot of people think that because some women don’t have a cycle during breastfeeding. However, I always got my cycle back like 7 weeks PP even though I was nursing.

There are young girls who get pregnant without ever having had a period, because they had sex and got pregnant their VERY FIRST time ovulating.

Certainly if exclusive breastfeeding is the only birth control available to a person it can't hurt to try. But everyone should understand how it works and the risk involved, and consider using other forms of protection.
I have always been that one person to say "how could they not know?" But I am currently pregnant with my second baby after trying to conceive for a little over 3 years, dealing with secondary infertility and one potential miscarriage (it was different from my regular cycles and later than usual).
With my son I knew I was pregnant because of symptoms and a positive pregnancy test at about 5 weeks. This time I knew because of some of the same symptoms and a positive pregnancy test at 4 weeks. However I only had morning sickness until i was 6 weeks pregnant but was never sick.
From then to now I do not feel pregnant at all. I am 14 weeks pregnant now and if I had not taken a test or knew my cycle I, to this day, would not think I was pregnant because I have zero symptoms. So now I get how some people wouldn't know.
And a lot of women have a symptom where the placenta sits at the from of the stomach making to where you cant feel kicks much if at all.
I didn't learn that i was pregnant until i went to ER thinking I was having a heart attack or stoke; and then they didn't tell me how far along i was. It was until i saw my OB/GYN; that is when I learned that i was 22 weeks along. I was SHOCKED both at the ER and my doctor's office. I was having my normal HEAVY cycles every month from 7 to 14 days. Gained no weight, had no sickness, no sore breast, etc. I was tired but i at the time was working 16 hours shifts 5 days a week. Who wouldn't be exhausted. But my son was a total surprise and a BLESSING.

I actually had a friend that didn’t know she was pregnant and had her baby in the hospital parking lot still inside the sack. Absolutely crazy. She didn’t gain weight, have any other symptoms, and she had a baby about a year before.

My mom had 0 symptoms when pregnant with my brother and also when she was expecting me. Like, if it weren't for the extra pounds and the lack of period she wouldn't had notice.

Besides heartburn and a bit of round ligament pain, I didn't have any symptoms with either of my pregnancies either. No morning sickness, cravings, or mood swings.
I lost weight when I got pregnant for my first trimester cause I had such a hard time eating. My nausea was all day.

I'm a mother of 3 adults, and suferred so many menstrual problems (complete hysterectomy at 27yo). My daughter's both have many of my issues and more. The lack of care and frustration because there is no quality care available is depressing. My girls and myself suffer through so much because it is overwhelming to try to find/get good care. You have taught me more about my body in 4 episodes than I ever knew! We need more doctors who are willing to teach, explain, empathize! Your patients are so incredibly blessed!
I breastfed all my children fully, had my period everytime after three month. In Germany they Always say, that breastfeeding is never an Option For contraception
With all those stipulations on breastfeeding being a contraception method, it seems like it is better just to play it safe, and stick to other methods.
It was told by mothers to daughters mainly. Sometimes nurses passed on old wives tales too. Best to say it isnt effective as b.c. to every patient.

But up till that point it works. So it's natures way of protecting the women's body. And before birthcontrol it was all women could do.

So why not educate patients how the body works. Women can track their ovulation with devices even when breastfeeding. Why not encourage that instead of an IUD or the Mini Pill. In my experience health care providers are often scarred of natural family planning and have a peace of mind when they prescribed you something.

If the newborn was that premature I can see why she didn't feel it moving. If you're not actively trying to feel the baby kicking, the movements can be very light at that stage. I'm at 35 weeks now and didn't really start to feel strong movements until like 30/32 weeks. Before that it was just flutters and if I didn't know I was pregnant I probably would have thought it was gas.

Yeah, but you also know that what the doctor tells the patient and what the patient hears and retains are two very different things.
When I was a teenager, I only experienced nausea and pelvic pains when I had my period. But now as an adult if I didn't sleep well, I get nauseous in the morning. A lot of the pregnant symptoms can be ignored if you don't think you're pregnant

My first, third and fourth pregnancies had very active babies that I could feel and even watch move inside of my belly. It was a completely different experience with my second one. I had all the regular symptoms, including missed cycles, but my little boy moved so infrequently, that I sometimes thought it was just a nerve jumping under my skin. I would feel him move once, and then not again until 1 or two days later, And the kicks/punches would always be so light, that it's possible I actually slept through a few of them. Some babies are very inactive, and when people ask me what the kicks feel like, I always described them as a hiccup/nerve jump combo.

My mother knew she was pregnant when I was coming, and she's told me that she'd get scared because I wouldn't move as much as my sister would. I mean every pregnancy is different.
My mother in law said the same thing. My husband moved constantly and his sister apparently barely moved and scared her to death.

I miscarried earlier this year and we decided it would be best for me to go back on birth control pills for now as we have a few changes that began in our lives (for the better!) after our miscarriage. But it's such an important topic to discuss and I made the decision to post about it on social media because I know it's more common than it's discussed. I am mostly at peace with ours but it still catches me off guard how deeply it still affects me when my emotions creep up on me say, on Mother's Day recently. Please please please, make a video about miscarriage though, I can't imagine how many women it would help. Love you and your content so much Dr Jones, keep it up!

My own mom had an extremely rough pregnancy with my older sister, and was sick to the point of being hospitalized because she just threw everything up. She couldn't even keep water down, and on top of that the labor process was a long and hard one for her. I remember seeing pictures of her after that labor and she was just completely pale from how hard it was. think she was also sick with me, but not as bad and the labor actually happened so fast the doctor didn't even make it to the room on time, so she got a break there lol. I just think it's an interesting example of how pregnancies can be different.
Just discovered this channel and I love it. Whenever Dr. Jones is giving us useful information, I sit there shaking my head yes like I'm in class taking notes😂

Could it be the self fulfilling prophecy that “I know I’m pregnant hence I’m having these symptoms”?
Highly doubt it, I for one can not stop throwing up for the life of me, currently on my second pregnancy and last one I threw up for 7+ months... so far now I'm on prescriptive medication for it and I still throw up a few times a week (at 5 months) that's not a symptom you can fake or ignore :/ it's just that some people have more diffuse symptoms, and yes ofc to some extent awareness will help you understand what you feel rather than dissregard it.

Maybe for some but definitely not for everyone. I only found out I was pregnant because of the symptoms. I was sick 24x7 for the first 15 weeks, it was pretty miserable but it was what made think "oh, maybe I'm pregnant" and lo and behold, I was.
Currently pregnant, I have no symptoms, apart from absence of my period. 🤷🏽♀️ Sorta happy about it so knock on wood that it stays like this!
I found out relatively early on in my pregnancies and for 2/5 of them, the only symptoms I had were missed periods. I feel like a lot of the most common symptoms can be dismissed as something else if you're not paying attention to them a whole instead of focusing on them individually

There is SO much misinformation circulating on using breastfeeding as birth control, so many people literally think that just breastfeeding is enough, ignoring the fact that there are specific circumstances that must be followed inorder for it to be effective. Thankyou so much for not disregarding it or saying that it doesn't work or exist as a temporary valid method of birth control post baby. ❤️

I have several friends that have used breastfeeding as birth control. We had a long talk explaining how things work after they got pregnant again “unexpectedly.”
Well it is an effective form of birth control, as said in this video, as long as certain conditions are satisfied. More effective than condoms.
My boyfriend and his brother are only 11 months apart. I always assumed this was probably down to their mum assuming she wouldn't get pregnant again from breastfeeding. I know it wasn't intentional!
Same with my two older brothers. I think it's 16 months.

I have a friend couple who have boys 10 1/2 months apart. Both wife and hubby had protection when she got pregnant with the second. They were utterly shocked to say the least.

I have a friend who’s kids are almost exactly 12 months apart who also believed you couldn’t get pregnant while breastfeeding.

I did breastfeeding as a birth control worked for a year and only reason I’m pregnant now after a year is because we tried for a baby

I've been pregnant 8 times. Five babies and three miscarriages. I had my first child on my 19th birthday. My second child was born two weeks before I turned 22. My third child was born when I was 24 and I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma when I was 8 months pregnant during that pregnancy. I had to start chemo 2 weeks after he was born and I did chemo for 5 months followed by 15 days of radiation. 2 1/2 years later, I got pregnant again. I actually took a pregnancy test a day before I was expecting to get my period because after already having 3 babies, I just had that feeling that I was pregnant. So, I found out I was pregnant pretty early. A week later I started bleeding and had a miscarriage. I went to the hospital 3 times during the first 72 hours after the miscarriage started so that they could keep checking my hormone level to make sure it was going down like it should. I had a follow up appointment a few days later just for a checkup. I had another appointment 4 weeks after that to get on birth control. The day before that appointment I had that feeling again so I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. I went to my appointment the next day and told them I needed a pregnancy test. It was also positive but the dr didn't believe I was pregnant because he said I wouldn't be fertile so soon after having a miscarriage. So, he decided to do a blood test and sure enough I was in fact pregnant again. That baby was my biggest baby and the only one that I wasn't induced into labor with early. She was a week late and I went into labor on my own. I got pregnant again when she was 9 months old. When I went to the dr at 8 weeks for an ultrasound, there was no heartbeat and I miscarried on my own a couple of days later. Fast forward 7 years and I got pregnant again. Once again I went to the dr at 8 weeks for an ultrasound and all they could see was an empty amniotic sac. I miscarried that pregnancy on my own again a couple of days later. 10 months later I got pregnant again and that baby was born a month after I turned 37. He is 6 years old now.

Imo I think that's just kind of a rule of thumb about anything during the day there might be something crazy or big but only once everything; everywhere is closed does the world somehow catch fire and it's all going down fast.

My mom is a 911 operator and she said her team gets probably one home birth call a week? And they love them. “99% of the time you get to hear the baby cry at the end and it’s amazing”
I'm not sure which videos (I've watched so many at this point!), but thank you so much for showing it is okay as a medical professional to not have an immediate answer for everything. There is so much power in using evidence-based medical journals with current research to best answer questions. That is what I always taught in school (Speech-Language pathology), and it is so refreshing to see in videos!
I'm a SAHM now, but in my "previous life" I was an L&D nurse. I love your videos. They're entertaining and very educational. I enjoy "calling it" before you get a chance to pause the video and do it.
I fall squarely into the breastfeeding as an incredibly effective source of birth control group. Even after my babies start on solids, I don't ovulate until about 9-12 months after giving birth. Knowing that, I would still never tell people that breastfeeding is 98% effective and to not worry about the other 2%. That seems so irresponsible of that provider. It's the job of those in healthcare to educate patients in all aspects and all possible outcomes.

My mom claims that she almost didn't feel me move at all. If she hadn't known she was pregnant with me, she probably wouldn't have noticed. Meanwhile, I'm 8 months along now and my baby is crazy active. I don't think there's any way I could mistake her kicks for anything else, bar an actual alien growing inside me.
parvanaturalia yeah, my daughter (who is now 4 1/2 months old) kicked me like crazy, one time I was resting a plate against my belly and she kicked it so hard it sent the chips flying off of my plate onto the floor, I have actual video clips of my belly moving, it looks like she was about to burst through my skin! Not to mention that even though I only gained 9 pounds my entire pregnancy, my belly got absolutely enormous, people kept thinking I was going to have triplets or something! LoL

I barely gained any weight, and I still have a bit over a month to go and people keep asking me if my due date is next week or if I'm having twins! I just have this giant, pointy belly that moves all the darn time.it's kinda funny. I wonder if my next pregnancy (if all goes according to plan anyway) is gonna be completely different

Placenta placement can affect this. If the placenta is in the front, you won't feel much.
From the very first time I felt movement when I was pregnant with my son u called him a face hugger. He was crazy active and I kept playing scenes from the alien movies over and over. I swear he squirmed like he was jacked up on mountain dew from the time I was 17 weeks to today he's still super wiggly! He's 5 months old and I still call him face hugger. It blows my mind when people say they felt hardly any movement!
I've never been able pick what I wanted to be when I grew up, it went from Archeology to Architecture to Law Enforcement, but since fining your videos I've decided that I want to be an OBGYN. So thank you for that💜

Doctor here, though I stay as far away from OB/GYN as possible :D I have always had low blood pressure. With 90/60, I worked 36 hours in the hospital. In my first pregnancy, it went even lower 😂
My second pregnancy, I got covid in the very first weeks. Then I had a dental emergency that required dental surgery - my upper right third molar was messed up pretty badly and was causing trigeminal neuralgia - pain worse than contractions, C-sections, kidney stones or broken toes - worst pain of my life. In the hospital they provided only epinephrine anesthesia. All of this lead to a partial detachment of the geatational sac. Since I had one miscarriage before, I was put on bedrest, along with dysrogesterone, spamolitics and magbesium . After a few weeks, everything was fine, I was finally calm and enjoying my pregnancy. My blood pressure was so low, around 70/40, since it was a hot summer. But then, at 17 weeks, I started having a real bad headache that felt different from my migraines. Good thing I am a doctor who is married to a doctor and with mom who is a doctor, so we caught early on that I was rocketing on 160/100. They started me on methyldopa and magnesium. One thing I noticed later on was my blood pressure was high only when I sat. While I was laying down or atanding up, it was normal. Over the course of the pregnancy, they lowered my dose of methyldopa to the bare minimum. I was very closely monitored, the baby was growing perfectly, the doppler was great, no blood in my urine, perfect bloodwork except a little anemia, no swelling. I was carrying the baby very, very high on my body, it was practically in my diaphragm. I could barely eat. I gained a total of 4 kg. till I delivered a 3,5kg baby at 37w5d 😂My BP after delivery was my normal one, 90/60. Looking back at it, me and my husband think the little guy was putting pressure on something when I was sitting down, and I did not actually have preeclampsia. As a kidney girl, I am thinking about renal arteries, my husband thinks another blood vessel, my mom thinks it was something related to the adrenal glands.
Anyway, I was so, so lucky that I only got high blood pressure and easily managed it, instead of full blown preeclampsia or eclampsia.
It would be really great for me if you could tell me if you, as an experienced obstetrician, think our theory about why I had high blood pressure has some merit.

Also spinach isn’t a particularly good source of iron. That myth was developed as part of the Popeye advertising campaign, even though the relatively low amount of iron in spinach was already well established by science back then.

And yes...miscarriage is truly awful! I lost a set of twins and a single pregnancy back to back...and sadly, i still haven't been able to carry a pregnancy to term. It makes me very, very sad....
One of my friends had her 3rd child and didn't know she was pregnant until around 23 weeks. She was breastfeeding her 2nd baby and never had a period. One morning she woke up feeling like she had the flu or something and the doctor decided to run a test. It came back positive.
This is very interesting....I had severe ADHD when I was younger, and I had a ton of energy all the time which made it impossible to sit still, and I used to get a surge of energy every evening and have to exercise before bed or I wouldn't be able to sleep and would be up all night, hyper. (I still get that way sometimes now, at 31, but not as much as I used to.) My mom told me that I was like that even before I was born, that when she was pregnant with me I moved around like crazy, especially at night. Then when she was pregnant with my brother two years later, she said she wondered if he was alive because he hardly moved around at all. We were both born full-term and alive and healthy. lol I think it's funny now because I hear people saying that boys are more active...but my mom tells me I was way more active than my brother. She didn't know I was more active than normal since I was her first.
When my mom watches these she's always floored because when she was pregnant with my siblings they were like, the most active babies in the goddamn world.
I am a grandma from Australia, my son is 27 now and my baby. i had placenta praevia grade 4 and was lucky with Gods Grace we made it through i never bled out till my c section and had 7 blood transfusions and they lost me during surgery and again in recovery, they said it was 2 code blues and they had taken me into hospital 3 months prior the birth, you are way to young but your the sort of person i would love to had around, you are lovely. It was terrifying.
