Man, nothing is better then getting into pajamas and coming home to another road to 1 billion, after a day of high-level engineering classes and a 20 minute walk in the pouring rain without an umbrella. Thanks for the relaxation squirrel :)
Wouldn't it be better to come home AFTER getting into pyjamas? That way you don't have to sit around in soggy pyjamas.... and you don't get so many funny looks while walking home 😉😂🤣😂
Squirrel, you hazelnut you have connected the pax line with the track on the cargo platform. You missed the inside and outside when rotating the camera view with 180 degrees
In trams vs buses you forgot that (a) trams can take more people (especially relatively early in the game - around 1910-1920 bus will be able to take what, 8 people? while tram will take 20) and (b) traffic doesn't go fast in cities anyway. So you will need less trams than buses to satisfy intracity passenger demand.
A bit late but... 14 Passengers on a bus vs 23 on the tram, tram has less Emissions, meaning less emissions per passenger transported. Speed also doesn't really matter that much inside a city given that the city speed limits are lower anyway. so I'd say trams are indeed the better option for intracity transport, Intercity however buses rule supreme til you get to trains.
You would think that older vehicles become more unreliable and lose performance (top speed, acceleration) as they get older which would be a bigger incentive to replace vehicles or increase maintenance than emissions only. Strange that the game doesn't simulate that. Maybe in Transport Fever 3 :)
While you were explaining the emissions issue, I started thinking about something. The way you have been managing cities so far is to supply them with goods, wait until they grow, then setting up public transport once they're established and growing. It's working well, obviously, but I would like to suggest a slightly different approach as an experiment. Find a small city that you haven't yet begun to supply. Initiate a public transport system first, making sure to maximize coverage of not only the center of the city, but future city expansion. If it means building roads beyond the current city limits, that means better future coverage as it grows. This way, you can design the streets your public transport will use with minimal impact on the city structure, but also guarantee you can have the most efficient route laid out. Wide streets, bus lanes (or trams if you wish) and as the city expands, all you would have to do is make sure the stops cover all 3 types of city sector. This would also allow you to make efficient routes for the supply of goods as well as city to city transport when it becomes viable. Since the three city sectors rarely overlap, judging the expansion of those areas would be easy enough to be able to plan transport expansions without interfering with residential areas. I believe that having an established inner-city passenger route early on would make a large positive impact upon expansion once your supply of goods is in place. It just seemed logical to me to support the early growth of a city as much as possible and make it easier to further that growth later on. Let the city build around your plans instead of the opposite. Edited for silly mistakes. Removal, not added. Hopefully.
I've noticed in the route manager, that you can see the "rate". That should tell you much you're moving per cycle. I look at it to make sure a town's demand is being meant and not exceeded by too much. It's especially helpful after doing a big upgrade like you're about to do with the MAN trucks and eventually the Semi trucks. At least in theory.
Thank you again for a most interesting video and for highlighting that there is much more to this game than just transporting people and goods around a map. Excellent!
Emissions in this game are so weird. I get that trams have noise polution, but even that is smaller then buses, not to mention they're electric not Diesel powered. Also, as the vehicle condition degrades it should increase emissions and running costs, not to mention increase times, since they run poorly and start to break up. I think they should consider some of the Cities: Skylines for noise and air polution, but with a fleet management mechanic, with all the wearing down and such. This would make for such a robust and interesting gaming experience, at least for a harder dificulty.
I believe you can "train" your cities Mr. Squirrel, just delete the odd bits of residential in the industrial/commercial areas and vice versa, soon grows back and the AI seems to get the idea then. Good series and very enjoyable and informative analysis.
I think the Loughton/Mablethorpe connection should've been "underslung, like you suggested at 21:18, so the tracks wouldn't pass right by the cities, wouldn't hamper city growth & would require less tunnelling.
I'ma moderately experienced TF2 player (maybe 80 to 90 hours) and I knew almost none of that about emissions. I thought the only think to really do about them was make sure train stations and airports weren't too close. I had no idea it only affected residential areas. Great video!
18:26 you can actually see what cities private vehicles go by choosing the destination city from the button that says “all” on the destination information on the left.
Under road tools, there is an upgrade tool for adding bus lines to the existing roads without changing their width...I am sure you know about that, but just as a reminder :D
i was about to buy that game a few months ago but when i saw the trailer i was like this is a very sad and dark game nah but now its very tempting so yeah im gonna buy it now
Just curious, what do you mean by pacs as i googled it and it is for signalling control? 24:25 Pacs will just appear out of here effectively. Also what does conmat mean? I've worked for many different industries including concreting and have never heard that term..? From what i googled it is a group of people who are apart of a council of people in the concreting world..? Very confused on what your saying..
No need to go off camera when you're rerouting all the bus stops. Record it, timelapse it, speak over it. Give me my hour of therapy thank you very much.
One of the Loughton's bus stop bothers me alot lol. The right bus stop forces the city bus line to go round the block. Shift that stop on the main road so that bus doesn't need to go round whole block pls xD
I love these episodes what I usually do is let my vehicles get bad. and if I do not want to replace them yet. I put maintenance up for a period of time until they are good again. then just turn it back to normal and they are good for a few more years
ok so u say the small amount of lesser emission of trams aint worth that much... But i think they are still superior to current mc benz. less emmision, more passenger, there dont need to be taht many on the street, decreasing traffic and they dont cost much more than bus. In addition u can ignore the 10 km/h diffrence, considering they cant get up to 70 in a city anyway. Also, this might be because im located in berlin, trams are just way better than busses :P. In the end u do u, just wanted to mention it
Would be lovely, if they brought back the breakdowns because of poor maintenance/replacements, like in transport tycoon. (tycoon, wasnt it?) Great episodes, nice explanations... keep up the good work! Btw, does a depot inside the city maybe have a bigger catchment than the truckstops? If you build the road under or over the trainlines, cities will expand beyond your trainborders.
That other train at 41:10, the “mirage’, throughout the whole video you haven’t acknowledged its existence. Not when you unlocked it and not even when looking through your options. Is it just that bad that you’re not gonna bother with it?
People car dont make polution. Only yours vehicles do. (Dont make sense, but it is how designer created it.)There is another number - public transport quality - which is related to improving (reducing) number of cars on streets.
Although the ‘the game doesn’t care about emissions’ it could be interesting to consider them regardless of zoning. This would bring increased complexity and difficulty increasing costs, making a billion is going to happen easily.
Re: Airports. Haven't messed too much with aviation, but maybe start growing cities from earliest start date to get cities with large enough pop to utilize air connections. Least that's my working plan when game comes back in rotation for me.
Instead of an X (diamond crossing), try to do a \ / crossing where you just seperate the two sides. That's how it is mostly done IRL these days on higher speed lines, and fixes it from not working
What If you do the layout of all train tracks already, in prep to connect all cities together? And replace all useful roads with the high speed version? Call if future proofing Do you Have an option to prevent the city from building on places you don't want. Saves the slap lol
I am absolutely loving this series. One randomly started playing on TH-cam and then I was like I need this and following this like a guide. Is there much of a difference between the different regions you can load up or is it just cosmetic?
Handy hint - When manually upgrading your roads in the cities for your bus routes, flick 'player ownership' on. I did this in my cities a few weeks ago, cost a fortune, and then noticed the AI was changing some of them back again.
I noticed you tend to not build train stations with the street access bits at all, is that intentional? (little gray archway and clock symbol on the buildings)
Squirrel i subbed at first or second episode an man im loving it even at work ill watch 10mins of the video an try and finish it that night. i dont have a pc but would love to play this game please please please keep bringing out more episodes of TF2 and others because TF2 is why i subbed but have been watching many of your videos previously before id seen you had this TF2 challenge going.👌👌❤
Can you guide city growth by feeding supplies to parts of areas in a city and starving other areas? So like, delivering fuel to only part of the area that needs fuel, and making the city expand in a specific direction?
So we agree, that replacing a vehicle is much better, you will get a faster bus with more people inside of it. even your trucks will get a bonus. Are you sure you don't want to take Mirage?
I really think they need to change the way vehicle condition works. Having breakdowns for poorly maintained equipment should be a thing to force the use of maintenance, and to consider replacing vehicles regularly as in real life. Vehicle condition could also influence the chance that someone wants to use that service, especially for public transport vehicles. I wouldn't want to get in a 50 yr old bus covered in dirt.
run out of time? just make then two hrs long and the problem will be solved. i love these videos, and i'm thinking about getting this game because of them. thanks for your time in making these vid's great work!!!

I love how squirrel is like”sorry I got a bit distracted there”. So what you need to do is …smooth that out”
The boat pollution comment made me want a series where you have one or a few extra large cities where you can fit canals to have boats moving through.

34:02 Just make a shorter diamond. Track speed on the diamond is irrelevant when they're entering/exiting a station.
Thanks for making these a tutorial in addition to a let's play. I appreciate it.
Swapping buses with trams, would improve emission, because trams take more people and therefor you don't need as many trams as you need buses.
