I watch your You Tube Videos and saw your wonderful Bengal cat Harness.
I purchased your Outdoor Bengal Houdini Harness 3 weeks ago, but my first time putting it on my cat ( named Yams) was a somewhat scary and stressful experience for Yams. I did everything you recommended . I set the harness in Yams bed in our living room. Yams was purring and laying on my chest when I buckled the harness on him. He did not seem to mind or notice the harness for the first 10 minutes. *But when I took Yams outside for the first time in the harness, Yams became very scared. He ended up going back in our home and hiding under the bed. He came out from under the bed soon , lay down briefly on the floor next to me while I took the harness off. Then he ran under the bed and would not come near me for 2 days! 🥲
I was worried that Yams thought I was not as trustworthy as before the harness experience. But after 3 days of trying to speak gently to Yams and not attempting to pick him up, things blew over. But I am hesitant to put the harness on him again after the first attempt.
See, 2 months ago, I noticed an 8 month old regal kitten living in the parking lot of my hotel while I was away on a work trip. Hotel was near apartment complex , and I feel someone purchased him then abandoned him. Guests and staff at hotel would show him affection and inconsistently give him food. Everyone liked him, though he was cautious. He was sleeping on the roof of the hotel and would let one hotel staff briefly pick him up. Despite earlier humans not being reliable , this beautiful kitten who I later discovered after I adopted him was a Bengal Cat .
I was led to research cat breeds with amazing athletic ability, long full tails, back lags that are longer than the front legs, and distinct marbled patterns on their backs after I had successfully incorporated Yams into my home. Yams is very loving rescue Bengal. He sleeps on my chest, or my husband’s at night. Yams has been gentle and incorporated well with my 2 small dogs.
But needless to say, he was a cat who was easily afraid and jumped when a car started. I have owned cats my whole life, but honestly was completely ignorant about the Bengal Breed. But there were ere were many exceptional qualities to this parking lot cat. However it took me 4 hours to play with him with toys, give him cat treats and coax him into my hotel room.
I know Yams wants to go outside. He first tried to file in line and go out with my dogs and my husband when the dogs took bathroom treks to our backyard. That is why I purchased your harness.
Now several weeks after the one negative harness trial, Yams goes over all by himself to our back door and he swipes at the bells we mounted on a large ribbon to ring them! Yams is imitating our dogs saying he wants to go outside! (Years ago when got our dogs, we put the bells on the ribbon next to our back door. Our dogs walk over and ring the bells with a paw when they want or need to go outside.)
But we live near a street with traffic and it is not safe to let Yams outside without a harness.
Do you have any suggestions for me to allow my former stray parking lot Bengal Cat , Yams, go safely outside? Should I put your harness on him again and let him wear it inside for several weeks first? Would a softer coat like harness be better first inside, before moving up to your harness indoors, then outdoors on your harness much later? ( I truly feel the fit and design of your harness is the safest design for a Bengal cat.)
Or should I put any harness on the back burner for now, and say invest in a secure Catio for Yams?
I am thinking “outside” is possibly both very appealing to Yams but also bringing up a kind of Cat PTSD ( post traumatic stress disorder) to be outside and on a harness(?) Possibly when he lived in the hotel parking lot, it was so stressful and frightening for Yams and he had to be constantly on his guard to survive , that the containment of a harness in when outdoors makes him feel very vulnerable (?)

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this already as I haven't seen it, but an extra tip(s) if you're still struggling with getting your cat used to the harness and/or have a particularly fearful/anxious cat: you're going to want to start from the *very* beginning with the introduction to the harness. As in the first time you bring the harness out, you click and reward them for even looking towards it. If somehow they aren't looking towards it, see if an ear flicks in the direction of the harness; any slight sign that their attention is shifting towards it. As your cat goes on, gradually increase your criteria for reward; if they're looking at the harness, let them move physically towards it, whether that be taking a step, or simply shifting their weight toward it. Do this for a couple sessions, or however long it takes for them to understand and be comfortable with what you're asking of them. Continue this process with every slight progress; from moving towards the harness, to touching the harness, to putting their head through the harness, to feeling the harness around them without it buckled, to eventually having the harness fully on, and they're comfortable. Keep the harness fully on for 5 seconds, 15 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes; again, increasing your criteria as you go, but taking steps small and easy enough for them to process clearly. Break it down as much as you need to to help your cat. When adding the leash, make sure to not put any pressure on it at first, so they don't immediately feel restricted and as though they need to escape. As they get more comfortable with that, you can start to apply pressure, but keep it light, and never aim to apply very much. After all, we want to keep them responsive, not completely desensitize them to our cues. A last tip for anything that you teach through clicker training is to keep your rate of reinforcement (how often you reward your cat) as high as possible/necessary. As you increase your criteria for rewards, there might be longer pauses depending on what you’re asking of them (i.e teaching them to sit/stay for extended periods of time), but especially when training completely new things, reward them at any chance you get, for any stability and/or improvement in their actions. This is how I initially started to train horses to wear halters, bridles, etc.; it takes some extra learning and a lot of patience to fully understand and get good at, but you should be able to train any animal through positive reinforcement.

This is so helpful! I'm in the process of introducing my cat to harness and leach and she's sooo anxious. She hates being held or when I restrict her movement so I've been having a lot of trouble with the harness part, but I think this might help!

I had a stray cat that adopted me. He leash trained easily and I would let him off the leash when on walks away from people. He followed me everywhere day and night. I gave him room to roam and he always stayed within site nomatter what I was doing. I grew up as a dog person but have converted to a cat person. They are smarter than dogs and just as loyal when given the chance. I am excited to see others make cats more than a house ornament. I love your videos.
You said the magic word PATIENCE! My cat is 7 yrs old so he's older.. today after one week he walked 10 feet. I was over the moon happy. He has a cystitis condition and the vet recommended walking him to help with stress. Now I'M STRESSED HAHA ..thanks for the vid will try it 2 to 3 times a day now...baby steps LITERALLY!
one of my cats is also 7 and quite obese. luckily he's evaded severe health complications so far, but I've started to get really worried as he's gotten older. you comment gives me hope that this could work and help him.
@@ErieRosewoodfocus on a wet food diet then transition to a raw food diet! Will cut the weight help him a lot. You want to avoid diabetes

My cat never walked on a leash till we moved to a suburb where we were no longer in the country. I kept him indoors so I wanted to let him out for some fun. He slipped every harness I tried within seconds and I had to run around like a nut trying to find and catch him. Even had a neighbor call cops because I was in their bushes looking for him panicked. Very frieghtening. I got a very small dog collar, and three regular leashes hooked together. I would have to pull him a little stop wait, eventually after a walk or two he could not wait to go out. He never wanted to walk during the day with cars around he would be scared to death so I never pushed it. I only had to say "wanna go for a walk?" He would run to the door. When we would go outside he would KNOW I wasn't just latching him out to the porch rail but would start running down the drive. We would actually jog for a bit. He had places he liked to stop drop and roll around putting his scent I'm sure and to stop and smell some of the plants alone the way, and I would let him have fun. Times had to pull him a bit to get him to budge. He would decide he was staying and would spread out both front paws and dig in. No slipping there...I never pulled hard. It's like a child if he got too stubborn I would stop pick him up and move him and then put him back down in the direction I wanted to go. I always walked him in the opposite direction of a busy road around us. Watch leaving the leash out to long coming up on trees as they might decide to jet up them and definitely don't pull them out of the tree, just slowly caox them down. you have to really watch out for neighbors who leave their dogs unleashed because twice I had a dog run at us! I miss my best friend and our walks.

I have a Sphynx cat and I’ve started training him after watching your videos. Because he’s an indoor cat he’s quite anxious when he is initially outside but recently he was comfortable enough to wee outside. #proudmum

I got the harness you recommended for kittens in your harness review video and he’s doing great! Seems pretty secure, it’s a lot like your escape-proof harness except that it goes over his head (like putting on a sweater) instead of fully opening and buckling, and it’s super light so he’s comfortable. I haven’t tried taking him outside yet but expect to be able to do that soon. This week, I’m just letting him get really used to wearing it 😁🐈⬛❤️

This video really helped and my cat is ready to go outside! Although I've been doing the harness training things with her for quite a bit I never really new if she was ready and although I've heard people say animals don't understand you since I've started anything with the harness Ive been just saying "I know right know you may want to gut me for putting this on you but if you work with me I can take you outside eventually." And I can tell she knows what I'm talking about because she seems more excited and will go to the backdoor or front door and meow or just sit by it. And we tend to leave it on her for a while so she can get used to it for the sake of maybe taking her on road trips and camping so she doesn't get stuck alone anymore. But she really enjoys it and hopefully he first outside journey to the backyard maybe the front goes well! ^^

Im pretty far into harness training my cats at this point and got them used to wearing harnesses, and coaxed them outside and have been showering with pets and treats, but my chunky boy almost got out his harness and scared me.
This helped me know better, and so Ill no longer be trying to teach him to accept the direction I want to go and just go at his pace.

You can do it! You'll see that they can get used to it rather quickly. Also, try to avoid rush dog hour! that will make even a greater impact in her comfort! :)

I've just started my kitten on a leash in my back garden. On his 3rd try he totally got the hang of it and is enjoying exploring the outside world for the first time. He will eventually be allowed out on his own like my elderly cat but the leash is a great way to acclimatise him to the outside in the mean time. We are both loving it! ❤
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I am not a fan of leaving cats wander on their own, it's safer for them and the ecosystem to leash walk them, I'd encourage you to keep doing that if you have the time!

Where I live (the Netherlands), cats just go outside and walk around freely, but the thing is they don’t follow you and basically act like they don’t know you. So it’s nice to have a way to go outside WITH your cat (:

my cat is 5 years old and he has always been an indoor cat. i tried to take him out once years ago but didn’t really think about having to train him so when i put on the harness and carried him out, he freak out and ran inside so i assumed he just didn’t want to go out and gave up. he’s a very nervous cat around new people, loud noises, etc. but i’ve also always called him my littler predator. he loves playing with anything that moves, exploring new places in the house, he likes chasing, hunting, and watching. he starts chirping and crouching when he sees a leaf falling outside the window. so i feel like he would love being able to see all of that stuff outside. and i feel like maybe starting to learn new skills and trying new things might help him feel more comfortable around new things. he is also VERY food motivated so i feel pretty confident he’ll wear anything or walk anywhere as long as he gets a treat after so i don’t think training with the harness indoors should be too difficult at all. (sorry for an entire biography on my cat haha. he’s just my best friend). thank you for the video !! hopefully following these tips i’ll be able to help him start adventuring out and feeling more confident !

This one (above) explains how to get the cat accustomed to the harness, but not how to do the lead-walk training. ie you mention in another video that we should train our cats to walk next to us or behind, not ahead... how do we do that? Excellent advice! I have a flame point Siamese mix and she is an absolute sweetheart. Could not have asked for a better cat. She can play for hours on end, is an absolute purring machine, and loves cuddles. She loves being held like a baby and will accept no other way of holding her. Although I have only had her for two years now, I am now convinced that I will never be able to not have a cat. That is saying something for someone who was once only into dogs. At this point, I'm even willing to give up my love for dogs if it so happens that she does not tolerate them (though thus far, she has only ever shown aggression towards cats, and has even gone as far as to be interested in the chocolate lab that resides in our neighborhood). Thrifty is the best friend that I've always imagined and I would have it no other way. I want to share this world with her and show her all that it has to offer: the adventures, the breathtaking landscapes, the fresh air, the open fields. I want her to live the best life that she can live. That's when I found your channel. Though she was nervous about the harness at first and refused to so much as walk, much less jump or run, after two weeks of consistent training she can now walk, run, jump, play, and explore. We are yet to add the leash or incorporate an outdoor area besides the backyard, but progress is being made. Thank you for your videos and tutorials. They have helped us greatly. Without it, we would not have found a good harness (we chose the black escape-proof one shown in the video - she is 7 lbs and wears the size medium and it fits perfectly) or ways to get her comfortable with wearing it. Thank you for your help! Keep doing what you do.

Albert...this is wonderful. I adopted a Bengal who had been abused and neglected. She made a ton of money off of him though breeding until he started rebelling at age three. When she wasn't breeding him, she threw him in the basement so he had very little people time. So, now I have a Bengal with a lot of energy and anxiety but one year later he has settled in a lot of gets love enough for ten cats. ANYHOW, as you know Bengals need exercise. I take him around my building but want to get him (and me) outdoors. I am worried about putting him in a harness due to his anxieties. I love your toy idea.
I also see you use a lot of treats. Toby is not treat oriented. He can take or leave them. He is only about his wet high protein food.

Love your channel!! I had a question about your pet safe harness-I noticed in another video that you secured it with something to keep it from loosening too much. Could you explain what you used for that-and how “escape proof” it makes that harness?

Tootie is 10, and a MUCH loved fluffy bag of whiskers. Bean is about 6 months of age. EXTREMELY food oriented and loves being alive and with the rest of us. He is 'naughty' but very cute 😍 he will receive a decent amount of your training and I can't wait 😊

Absolutely lovely my cat is a ferral cat born on pur property and roams around freely and often brings me wildlife presents i am moving in 12 months to start nomadic van life and want to train him for that i will continue to watch all your other videos but was wondering if there is anything specific that i need to know hes just over 2yrs old now

I watched a video about two weeks ago I have three cats one Siamese, One snow bengle, and one brown bengal all of them really got used to the harness right away. They don’t even fight when I try to put it on they nap in it and everything. I plan on taking them to a little walk today So just re-watching to make sure I did everything right

I have a RobbitGoo harness and leash and so far my cat likes it at first he just flopped over and laid there but not 5 days later after just wearing the harness he seems to really like it

My cat is a outdoor cat since she is little ( she is 4 know ) we are currently living in Germany and it’s very safe here for her. But next year I’m moving to Thailand and I’m scared to let her go out on her one so I want to try and leash train her. I will have a lot time when I’m there and can take her with me 80% of the time. I hope everything works out. Thanks for the tips. 🙏🏻

Hey Albert. I really love your videos! I'm on a mission to clicker train and harness train both my cats. Question tho. What's your opinion. Neither one of my cats door dashes. Well one of them has but it's not a habit. And the other will walk outside but not run off. If I start taking them out I'm worried they will learn to door dash. My question is if I clicker train them to sit and stay at the door when taking them out do you think it will be ok? I think it might but I wanted your expert opinion.
Also. In those opening clips your cat is wearing a voyager harness. Coincidentally I just ordered one on amazon. Is it a good harness as well? Thanks

You are so cute and your kitty is adorable!!😭 Great video - I am going to try this to get my two babies to walk on a leash. Also, quick question. Did you train her to get on your shoulder? If you did, how did you do it?
I'm so happy you are going to try! :) Shoulder training is a quite long process:
1) Get them comfortable there (they usually feel scared at the beginning, not trimming their nails and and wearing a think sweater can help at the beginning)
2) Finger Targetting (and clicker training, there's a tutorial about this in this channel) - To get them touch your shoulder
3) Get them to hop on your shoulder while sitting in bed or the sofa.
4) Get them to jump from the floor.
