The interview has summed up the relationship between the UK and EU, the UK interviewer is completely out of her depth and in confusion while the EU conducts itself in a confident and professional manner.
@@cjstubejackofalltrade1551 so far there is a shortage of key workers in multiple industryies in the UK and the EU seems to be doing ok and just trying to deal with the Pandemic, which the UK is also dealing with very poorly.... so I think the EU is fine. 70% of the problems at the moment are to do with Covid and long term lorry driver shortages as elder drivers retire and young people don't go into them. All you are implying with muh brexit is to say let's kick the can down the road by plugging the gap with Eastern European drivers and keep the wages and working conditions deflated.
@FOR FAUXSAKE I’m a unionist and I quite agree that DUP are deluded and arrogant period. The N.I Protocol is only yet another example of why we need more middle road, less radical parties in Stormont.
@@chadchadson3894 The UK has an ageing population, more retiring than coming in to look after them. To say that hgv drivers wages are low because of Eastern European’s but in the same breadth the driver shortage is not because of brexit because there was only a few is laughable in its inconsistency
@@andrew30m I would suggest taking a comprehension skill to actually give your word salad some substance. Where did I say it had no impact? I said it is well documented by industry experts that a shortage of HGV drivers has been a long term issue since BEFORE brexit. Even Germany has a shortage of lorry drivers, so clearly its not the primary cause. The main drivers are aging work population and covid, with brexit making up about 30% of the problem. Therefore it stands to reason that had the other two factors not occurred then the brexit impact would be minor, and easily solvable with proper working conditions and wages. The 'muh brexit' argument completely neglects the fact by being out we were able to roll out our vaccines far quicker and more effectively. But 'cherry pick' all you want to make your half baked points.

Barnier has lot more respect from me after this interview. He had patience to answer on all, even very provocative and personal questions. Like it was journalist mission just to enrage other person with personal attacks. And yes, there is no way that you can have all benefits of being in the club - and in the same time pick and choose what would be your obligations. How about other members of the club? Sorry, reality does not work this way.
It is actually not hostile what she is doing, and he knows that. It is just a method of asking questions, she is in the role of the devils advocate. The questions she asks are actually good, and allow Barnier to give good answers. So the questions were not really personal. She was citing personal questions others have asked, both being aware that it is inappropriate. The situation is stressful for both, they do hard work. You are impressed by Barnier here, like I am too. But why is that? Not because Barnier was sitting in a chair holding a monologue. Or somebody wasted his time with small talk. It is her professional work to make Barnier say what he said. It is not fun, but they are not there to have fun. They do hard work.
Barnier is actually a Anglophile and supported the UK a lot during the 1970s. He wanted better terms for the UK when they entered the EEC in 1973. He rather a diplomatic man. Has a sort of attitude that creates a mutual respect for him something that most British politicians don't have at all. I wish him the best in the French elections in 2022.
Is she kidding 😳 the UK wanted Brexit and now has to face the consequences the Brits have to realize that they have been duped by their own politicians
will take a whilefor that to sink in .............even ifit does , the brits will never admit that they were conned , and gave the tories a massive majority to walk over them ..................!
Jesus..... bitter much?!? Nobody has been duped! We are finding out own path. Nobody though it would be without bumps but we’ll better for it in the end.
Read Michel Barnier 's book, and you will understand the conditions of assymetric negociations : UE representatives deeply knew the matters and the alternative consequences when British negociators were flippant and non professional. Cummings comments were insults which are not legitimate in a BBC interview.
This journalist couldn’t have put her own bias forward more obviously. Her stressing on the AUKUS is really fun: First of all everyone is still wondering what in hell the UK is doing in this agreement, they won’t take part in the building and they have no direct interest in the indo pacific. She’s not even able to give one benefit. It gives a good view on why the UK couldn’t stay in the EU. The perception of the part of the population she represents is inherently partial and inward looking. She doesn’t seem to understand that the UK and EU are not on the same ground on every level. The UK is an economical dwarf compared, yet they thought they could impose their interests. Real world doesn’t work like that, as the UK-US deal shows One thing is certain however: his decency and lack of animosity contrast clearly with the clowns composing the UK government. Man what a joke the UK became
economical dwarf compared to the likes of the US, China or India sure but you can not say they are a dwarf in the EU. In the EU is where the UK's economic might could of swayed other EU countries such as their ability to create the EU single market which is a direct result of British influence. The UK could do very well in fact if it were not for the lousy politicians we keep getting a democracy not based on truth, reason and logic but on lies, apathy and fantastical thinking. Just look at the British Press and how they convey information to the public . Listen to what the ordinary electorate regurgitates and you'll realise the profound influence of media in this country.
In fact you can see this journalist Emily Maitlis toeing the line of the British Press. I'll give you an example. "They understood exactly what the protocol meant?" . This is a common theme as of late whereby the British Press portrays Boris Johnson as "not understanding the Irish Protocol", "they could not foresee the outcome" . Now come on lets be real. This guy Boris is a Etonian and a highly educated man that is evidently a very successful politician, you don't become successful if you are stupid. He knew what was going on but the reason why the British Press says such ludicrous things as this is because they want to sow the divide between Britain and the EU by implying that the EU somehow deceived the British. There is no blame in the British Press on Boris or his crew for the mess of the Irish Protocol. That is the problem, Chris. There is a reason for that , just look at the massive connections between the Conservative party and the British Press.
@@angelicking2890 I agree, they perfectly knew what they were doing, and BoJo's government is using the technicality of those kind of matters to mislead its citizens. Nevertheless, the Brexit campaign clearly showed that a substantial part of the UK population was willing to defend a position they did not understand based on their phantasms of former imperial glory. It is a real shame, I, as a French who have been living in the UK, feel really sorry about this situation, because by doing this the UK damaged both itself and the EU. But, the fact that a majority of the population was thinking at the time that the EU was harmful to the UK, when in fact it was the exact opposite, is quite telling about the mentality that this journalist represent, and the supposed superiority of the British that those people still believe in. What is more shocking is that she's still trying to put this idea forward. When and if the UK population will get rid of it's past imperial glory dreams, which comes with the inherent feeling of superiority that led so many to believe the UK was going to do better outside of the first economic bloc in the world, I'm sure there will be a lot of progress and probably a new adhesion process. I feel sorry that this realization will have to come at the cost of the wellbeing of common British who will probably suffer from the economic hardship in coming. As of now, you guys defined your future by this act. Concerning the UK press, well, this interview clearly shows the level of mediocrity that defines it. This woman interview should be put forward in journalism school as an example of what a lack of objectivity is. The newspaper in the UK played a big part in this mess, but, let's not forget one thing, the newspaper adapts to their readers and listeners, and obviously it wasn't too hard to play on the nostalgia of the British empire to make people think they were so much better that they'd do better than the other europeans. Let's not forget one thing, there are plenty of newspaper from other countries, French, German, Spanish, that publishes both in national language and English. If the British newspaper are so bad, what is preventing British from getting a point of view from other countries to make their own opinions, apart from laziness? There is no excuses for being manipulated nowadays in a democracy like the UK. Also, your comment imply that the newspaper have the role of educating the mass. This is totally false, they just put forward informations in a way that suit they ideology. The best newspapers will try to inform objectively, but it rely on each and everyone to educate themselves and understand the information given to them. Sadly, the UK with it's education system is clearly failing on this part. In my opinion, you can't really blame people to fool others if the said others are so gullible.
@@angelicking2890 Also, you should check your facts, the UK joined the EU in 1973, when the ideals of the single market were implemented in 1957 with the treaty of Rome. So this is just utter bullshit and you guys should try not to be more novelist than you already are. The very fact that you think the UK played a role in the EU construction is telling about British nationalism and it's inherent stupidity. According to your rethorics, the UK swayed others to make a single market that was already existing, and which also was the very reason the UK left? Damn, that's some psycho stuff. If you were objective, you'd realize the UK was never a source of proposition nor progress for the EU, for the simple reason that the UK was always thinking of it's own interest and was never willing to integrate nor share too much interest.
Barnier is arguably more articulate than BoJo despite English being his second language. BoJo’s dalek-esque speech is an earsore aside from all the bullshit he spouts.
Imagine Johnson doing a similar interview in French for a French speaking tv in France, Belgium or Luxembourg, and with a journalist asking biased questions like these....
The journalist is obviously a brexiteer. She tried her best to ruffle Barnier bringing up what Cummings and Nigel said about him but did not succeed. Hats off to him. She also said that EU should be more flexible now that the protocol is not working. She also asked Barnier whether the Brit who signed the protocol understood what he signed. She's so ridiculous. Shouldn't she ask this question to Boris?
It seems there are no journalists to ask hard questions of politicians. I love Eddie Izzard and Jo Brand, but it is not their job to quote the hypocrisies of the politicians back at them! They're supposed to lampoon, not be the voice of reason.
Some extra questions Emily Maitlis style… So Emily… the whole of Europe saw that your interview was ridiculous. Are you ashamed of yourself ? Are you going to publicly say you’re sorry ??
Very poor interview indeed, whereby the journalist seems to confuse aggressive questioning with biased patriotism - going as far as bragging that the UK removed the French from the Aussie vessels' deal! Frankly expect better from the BBC.
Barnier is a very smart operator. He led a top team of negotiators, lawyers etc. The Brexit talks were an example of Men v Boys. Look at how many of our 'top' people ran off tails between their legs. He is magnanimous in total victory. When challenged on NI-'They are serious people, Non?' Brilliant.
Emily Maitlis did the British public a disfavour coming unprepared to this interview and filling the knowledge gaps with hollow rhetorical questions and content-less ad homonym attacks. It is in everybody's interest to better the relationship with the Isle's closest neighbours.
1. The AUKUS deal has nothing to do with Brexit. If the UK were still in the EU, this deal could still have happened. 2. There is nothing wrong with the NI protocol. The DUP are on their knees and have lost the vast majority of their voters. 3. Northern Ireland is working (thanks to the Protocol) just perfectly, no shortages like Britain 4. Visas restrictions - no problem, nobody's going to the "Plague Island" anyway, why would we? You have shortages on Food, Fuel, Workers (Farming, HGV, Hospitality, Health Care .....) 5. Your happy fish must still be happy as they are still alive, as your fishing industry has collapsed. 6. Your questions were not very intelligent - you seem to spend more time telling Mr. Barnier about how great Brexit was going for GB. I am surprised (and impressed) that he actually kept a straight face. 7. When are the BBC actually going to start telling the British public the truth about the real consequences of Brexit and what they will face in the future (both near and distant). Seriously, where has the objectivity gone? 8. The COVID-19 vaccination head start also could have happened if the UK were still in the EU - so had nothing to do with Brexit. Even after hogging all the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccines (keeping them in the UK), you are way behind the EU countries now - hence why Johnson no longer mentions the vaccine roll out.
She is just playing devil's advocate, she is giving him something to argue against. Also, it is very clear that the NI protocol is not working. That should not come as a surprise to anybody, Johnson threw NI under the bus.
@@tonyb9735 Yes, maybe, but whose fault was that? Was it the place of mr barnier and the EU to put together a deal that preserved the uk or the eu? Their remit was to protect the eu. mr johnson as pm and leader of conservative & unionist party was responsible for securing his country's territorial intergety. As in all things involving mr johnson he failed, and miserably. To read the press in the UK you'd hardly realise it.
@@haroldwilson8081 "whose fault was that? " It was the fault of the Tories. I think that's pretty obvious. The EU stated, clearly, all the way along through the negotiations what their red lines were. The EU were more than generous in their negotiations, they had very few ideological constraints (unlike the Tories who were driven by the ERG), they sought only to protect the single market (which is absolutely fair enough, anybody who didn't expect that is an idiot), and to ensure that the GFA was adhered to so that there was no return to violence in Ireland (which the Tories don't give a crap about, they repeatedly tried to violate the GFA during the negotiations). The Tories thought they could bulldoze past those things. They were wrong. When they failed, they signed a shit agreement that didn't, couldn't work - but it was they who demanded that arrangement. Boris specifically demanded it, and signed it, knowing that it wouldn't work and thinking he would later be able to rip it up. There really is no doubt whose fault it is. Brexit was never a good idea, but it absolutely didn't have to be as damaging, as toxic as it is. That's entirely on the Tories.
When Emily Maitliss invoked a quotation by Nigel Farage, of all people, that was the moment that it really hit me that she is way out of her depth here in this interview!
So, the BBC really thinks that it is mr. Barnier's responsibility to make sure that the UK side understands what they sign? Really? And the BBC really thinks that what mr. Cummings is telling about mr. Barnier as being lazy is important to mr. Barnier? What kind of journalism is that?
Exactly, she has just tried to play with him, to provocate with questions about opinions. Like asking him what does he think about politicians mocking him, bullying him, using derogatory language when referring to him. You really need to have a lot of strength, knowledge and patience not to fall into this miserable trap.
It's not a trap and she is not a bad interviewer. It is common in the UK for the interviewer to take the opposing stance of the interviewee. The interviewer presents opinions from the opposition as the people who believe what she is proposing can know the interviewees response. They do it to all people

What I read the other day from someone who was present there is that the EU team always arrived to the negotiating table very well prepared with lots of documents to underpin their position, whilst the UK team was very much unprepared. What a poor set of questions. Of course you want the interviewer to be tough and grill the person being interviewed when they are a senior figure in politics. But in terms of the questions being asked this sinks to the level of cringeworthy. So why , after Brexit , EU workers will go in UK to work (and perhaps after shortage must go back again in EU) if they can also work in EU . This is just ridculous. The freedom of movement of people and goods is a great asset in EU and a majority of UK citizens didn't want it . Perhaps this Brexit was a silly move for a short time perspective, but we never know how it will develop. Towards the better for UK. Myself , living in Belgium , will prefer to travel in EU countries just to not having a border hassle in UK and many EU people are feeling like that. When one is saying to one friend that he is boring or something , the friend will never go knock at your door to say hello again. Please note that I am French speaking dude and I am writing this with my poor English knowledge . How many British would be able to write this in French ???? That is the center of the problem. Many British don't understand the others (EU people) but many EU people are trying to understand British language ...

Please don’t forget that almost half of the people who voted, voted to “remain” and Brexit should never have been decided by referendum especially as the “Leave” campaign persuaded voters that there would be no negative economic consequences to leave the EU. What a lie. “Project Fear” they called it when we remainers pointed out the high price that would have to be be paid. Well, we’ll wait 5 years and then see the true consequences of Brexit. Today with the pandemic and other issues it is to early to call. Best wishes from a Francophile. (Excuse my French.)

When the person interviewed has to tell the journalist : we have to avoid any kind of misunderstanding, it's clear what kind of journalist that it!
Her stressing on the AUKUS is really fun:
First of all everyone is still wondering what in hell the UK is doing in this agreement, they won’t take part in the building and they have no direct interest in the indo pacific.
Real world doesn’t work like that, as the UK-US deal shows
One thing is certain however: his decency and lack of animosity contrast clearly with the clowns composing the UK government.

@@haroldwilson8081 "whose fault was that? "
It was the fault of the Tories.

And now , the UK Governmt is saying thet these "unskilled" workers from EU being truck drivers are welcome because there are shortages of workers in the supply chain. = that sounds quite hypocrit". The problem is 1/ to stay in UK is becoming more complicated fr EU people 2/ there is also a shortage of workers and truck drivers in EU . So why , after Brexit , EU workers will go in UK to work (and perhaps after shortage must go back again in EU) if they can also work in EU . This is just ridculous. The freedom of movement of people and goods is a great asset in EU and a majority of UK citizens didn't want it .
