Michel Barnier on Peston: Reaction as new report shows whether people regret Brexit

- Brexit refuses to go away. Over seven years since the referendum, and over three and a half since the UK finally left the European Union, the issue continues to generate headlines and spark furious debate. One reason for this is a sense that public opinion is still evolving. There has been much talk of ‘Brexit regret’ among Leave voters.
Given this, Public First and UK in a Changing Europe decided to talk to Leave voters to hear from them what they thought. In a survey carried out in May and June 2023 and a series of focus groups held between May and September, a series of questions were posed to them about what they think about Brexit, how it has gone, whether they have changed their minds and what they think the future holds. This report describes the findings.
I'd have thought that Michel Barnier's reflections on Brexit would be worth more than 7 minutes in a three-way exchange with Peston and Davis. Barnier's dog could have explained yet again that the Single Market is indivisible. It's either all the way in or all the way out.
Out of his depth Peston being repeatedly reminded he is dealing with an EU politician, not a UK one.

The Interview tell the viewers 1 thing.
That the UK is clueless about the workings of the European Union
£300 billion in exports in 2016 with inflation should be £420 billion (not £340 billion) so trade with EU by value has fallen by 27% since the referendum. Not good.
A fkin lot better than we have got now with the Mars deal !
That was weird, It's almost like they didn't schedule enough time to actually get any coherent questioning done. Gotta remember EU politicians are a lot more likely to give the whole picture than UK politicians right now.
4:12 So strange that the UK, after +45 years of membership, still don't know how the EU and the Single Market works.
I see a lot of british youtubers promoting PR voting system despite the fact they clearly dont understand even 4% about how this system actually works
thank God we got rid of this insane people...
We know that the Single market is outperformed by every comparable economy . ... What more do we need to know?
The whole Brexit vote was won on people not knowing what they were voting for no matter how much they may protest otherwise. Ask them a few questions about how EU membership actually works and they won’t be able to answer basic questions.

David Davies is such a waste of space - he could start an argument in an empty room and lose the argument
The UK is now Europe’s top destination in start-up venture capital, new research has indicated - with Kemi Badenoch hailing the news as a “massive vote of confidence” in Brexit Britain. Not only is Britain outstripping every nation in the EU27 - it also comes in third in the world, with only the USA and China attracting more cash.
Ms Badenoch commented: "We know the UK is the best place in Europe to invest, and today’s news is a massive vote of confidence that reaffirms this fact.
“The HSBC data shows that - contrary to the voices of doom and pessimism - post-Brexit Britain is leading the way in attracting investment into start-ups, growing our booming tech sector and creating jobs. The EU is a complete failure and we are doing far better out.
@@garyb455 Funny, is that why companies are moving from the UK to the EU. You’re a third country worthless.
@@garyb455oh dear, this one buys everything they feed him.
The best thing that can be said about Mr Peston is that he apparently shares the massive ignorance about what the EU is, and how it functions, which prevails in Britain.
As for Mr Davies, he was being more than a little economical with the truth.
At the end of the day, it does NOT matter what anyone in the UK thinks or wants.
The decision making power regarding the UK's EU relationship and putative future membership is in the EU's hands....
Well said! I was almost reduced to tears when I learned of the anti-British sentiment that pervades Europe right now. Learning that there were some individuals that would veto any application to re-join took the wind right out my sails I don't mind confessing! That said, they only seem to be averse to our Britishness (read, arrogance) as opposed to any real economic or political issues. It follows, there may be just as much ignorance in Europe about the Union as there is here. We'll all get it right...one day. 🙏🏾

Enjoying your pearl clutching?
Back in reality, the rest of Europe had more than FORTY FIVE YEARS to observe the antics if the British while they were members of the EEC/EC/EU.
Not impressed, generally, as the UK was always the whining foot dragger demanding special treatment.
And then there was the whole Brixit debacle, and the Irish could sit back and watch as the rest of Europe suddenly understood what we had to put up with for so long....
"...there may be just as much ignorance in Europe about the Union as there is here."?
No, there isn't.
False equivalence.
For starters, no other country in the EU/EEA suffers, as the UK did and does, from the effects of more than SEVENTY YEARS of relentless anti-Europe propaganda pumped out by most of the British.more specifically English, media.
@@Elst07896 The EU has realised that there are only relatively poor countries left so anyone joining now will not be net contributors to the EU coffers. Norway is unlikely to join since the EU will no doubt find a way of prohibiting sensible policies like accumulating an oil fund, and Iceland is a relatively small economy.
@@peterc.1618 Understood. Good point Peter. 👍
Inflation not taken into account with exports, they are actually down in real terms
Keir Starmer cannot renegotiate the Trade Agreement because the UK is a Third country and will be treated as such by the EU. Why should the UK get better treatment as a Third country than say Brazil or Japan or any other? One thing is certain is the UK won't get the same benefits when it was in the EU!!!
What benefits? Chronic underemployment, decades of Piss poor GDP growth or UK fishing grounds being fished to the point of collapse by EU factory ships?
that's what the UK is seeing post brexit!!

I suggest you consume once in a while reports on fisherfolks complaining about their unicorns not having been delivered.
The TCA review, not renegotiation, in 2025 will be, according to EU sources, a check/audit on the implementation status of the the TCA and the compliance to it of the parties involved. Barnier's current position is that of special adviser to Von der Leyon regarding the ratification of the TCA under new arrangements that had the responsibility for TCA implementation handed over to Maros Setcovic. This means Barnier has nothing to do with any renegotiation even if there was one, which there isn't. This is all hot air. We'll have to wait and see the results of the review in 2025 before anything else.
I've got news for those who thought that Brexit could be made to work:
- for leavers that none of you have ever shown a credible policy of deregulation that would work in the real world produing benefits above what you had in the EU - And if you did vote for being poorer, then stop denying the British decline.
- remainers that your assumptions only depend on the EU sacrificing its interests just like the Brexiteers did think until 2021. That is, not going to happen.
The best you could have was freedom of movement, that was goods and people. That is lost for good i believe. No negociations can be achieved on that.
300 billion to 340 billion, no accounting for inflation.
For obvious reasons, no deal between EU and Brexitannia can be as good as EU membership (no club offers member benefits to non members, at least if it wants to survive). Nor can it be as good as EEA membership, given that UK doesn’t want to follow EEA rules.
It seems many Britons still don’t understand this basic principle after seven years.
Ignoring inflation etc...The EU now has a trade surplus thanks to Brexit and Johnson turning Britain into a vassal state of the EU where we have little to no checks on goods coming in
Just remember David, your quoted £340 million now does not take account of inflation against the £300million value from 2016. Factor this in & the value has fallen as has the volumes & the businesses actually doing trade. May be next time Davis, try a bit of maths using a pencil & paper..... oh forgot, you don't take such simple items to important meetings. Perhaps you believe important details, note taking & financial mathematics worthless?
We should employ Barnier to negotiate our trade deals, hes actually good at it
Are the figures about the British exports to the EU told by the English gentleman corrected by inflation ? It in not said and it makes a huge difference
A majority is a majority.
A super majority of 66%
Why not make it 95%?
Whats the difference? If a super majority is required but not achieved but a majority is achieved, what says that about democracy.
How about a Potential MP being required to get 50% of the vote to be elected.
Now that would be democracy.
Starmer apparently also believes in unicorns, or at least tries to sell those to the electorate.
He won't get any renegotiation.
Listen carefully to what was said. Barnier questioned what Starmer has said because he and the EU have had a number of discussions with Starmer and Labour about it, rather than what the right wing British media are 'reporting'.

No doubt ....brexit has failed
Leavers rather liked unfettered trade with the EU, but passionately disliked the "political" union (that Keir Starmer now intends to rejoin).
Well, now you can see that leavers got anything but unfettered trade with the EU. And Keir Starmer hasn't said anything about "rejoining" a non-existent political union. Kind of difficult anyway if you've ruled out rejoining the customs union and the single market at least in the short term.

We've signed trade and pact deals that will last decades and cant go back so all of this is irrelevant.
Of course you can. If you couldn't go back the UK would have forfeited its national sovereignty and become a vassal state.
You can tell Peston was a remainer, you can see it a mile off. Crawler.
Well - he even admitted it in an interview he gave to Iain Dale on his LBC show a short while after the referendum result, where Peston then claimed that the Brexiteers were probably on the right side of history.
This is the third time barnier has been on our TV I've seen him twice on peston do they think we can't see through the undemocratic remainers.
The doomsday scenario never happened
Think there is always ways to achieve improvements, the EU is pragmatic rather than ideological and a Labour government will be the same. UK will need to improve its ability to export to the European continent and that would benefit EU consumers (but not EU companies). UK made a mistake and it will be a long winding road to restore its position.
" the EU is pragmatic rather than ideological"
What does that even mean? Did you listen to what Barnier said? It is not his personal opinion.
What has the UK's need to improve its ability to the export to the European continent ot to do with the EU?
"...the EU is pragmatic rather than ideological..."?
I am sure you thought that this claim was very clever.
Back in reality, it is just pointless noise.
Back in reality, the EU is, firstly and foremost, a peace project. It is the largest, longest and most successful peace project in the history of this world.
Secondly, the EU is a community bound and defined by its foundational treaties and its laws.
The EU will not, because it cannot, compromise its treaties and laws.
Especially when such compromise would only benefit a Third Country...

I am still waiting for Brexit. The problem is people voted but the politicians never did as they were told. The EU and our quisling MP's just ignored the referendum and bided their time to take us back into the failing EU superstate. Furious!
Don’t worry. The EU will eventually evolve into a proper federal state, which would have been impossible as long as UK was a member, but UK will not be allowed to join for at least several decades. You will be able to enjoy your beloved Brexit in full.
There are plenty of options to improve the operations without changing the basic agreements.
E.g. Paperwork can be digitised, electronic documentation, digital population of forms etc.
Possibly sampling options for checks.
Obviously all standards of production of product that will be marketed in the EU has to meet EU standards. Just as any EU products need to meet the UK standards ( which happen to be much the same) of course the UK needs to implement it's checks and compliance systems which it has been holding back due to other global and local problems.
Starmer can improve operations, can.work more with non contentious opportunities. But that is all.
But there is a lot that can be done to improve operations.
I'm sure you're right that some things can be "tidied up" BUT what many forget is that the UK "financial sector" got a very generous interim "deal". That is going to be addressed in the EUs favour in the next few years. That is going to be a huge issue for the UK economy.
@@fintonmainz7845 it is not certain it is going to be issued in the EUs favour, they probably won't have the capacity to take it over for a decade, and if they do it will add extensive risk and cost to EU business.
UK,USA businesses that are already operating in the UK already have companies in the EU that will look to take up some of this business and have been working to automate a lot if this anyway. These companies already work across the globe in cross national teams, and share resource using intra company charges.
This is one aspect of services that are performed by knowledge workers. They can move a smallish amount of staff and keep operations where they are, some of which are probably in India or Pakistan anyway.
Big EU firms are already warning the EU commission that their proposals have considerable risk, and considerable cost to EU business. These are very powerful lobby groups.

I'm utterly convinced the US numbers are cooked. Economists don't do field work, they just take the data the government provides. Back in 2007 I saw a TH-cam video which explained how under Clinton the way of measuring inflation had been changed, and since then inflation has been underreported. This makes GDP look bigger, the dollar stronger and interest rates lower than they should be. But after 25 years of this, living in America has become unaffordable for most Americans, as their wages have not kept up with real price increases at all. Every European who goes to America is shocked with how expensive everything is.
