VW Golf Mk7 2.0 tdi oil change. How easy? Very messy!

Regular oil change on Mrs Clutches 2015 2.0 TDI golf. I always make a mess doing the oil filter on this.
We usually change the oil at 9,000 mile intervals. Went to 10,000 this time. Am thinking of dropping the intervals to 6,000 as the miles are getting high.
Any thoughts on oil change intervals at these miles?
Car is now on 173,000 We purchased it at 3 years old with 52,000 on the clock.

What did they do in the few years 😮 my passat has the oil filter on top it's so handy to pop off
