    Toyota/Lexus hit a home run with the new GX design. Love it😊. Thanks David 👍

      ...it's a great Toyota badged model, but it does not scream 'luxury' to me in its styling and I cannot wonder what the new 2024 Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser will be like in comparison. We shall see, it might be a very crowded off-road model market for Toyota/Lexus!

    • @lunamaria1048
      @lunamaria1048 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@edmundcharles5278 I have had the same concerns. Asking why would they bring the Land Cruiser version of this, when only the badge and engine will be different and the 4Runner is already North America's mid-sized "Land Cruiser". My dad said a LC Prado and GX 550 are the family oriented 4x4s and the 6th gen 4Runner will probably be more rugged and aimed at being more competitive with Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco (I sure hope so!) BTW gen 6 4Runner wont be a 2024 lol, unless Toyota has a surprise for us. 2025 probably, if it isn't being discontinued

      I agree. Put a new suit over the V8...
      ...which is why I'm tempted to wait for the hybrid version.
      I seriously off road my vehicles. My 94 80 series and 2002 100 series are built like tanks. No misaligned doors, no squeaks, no weird body weirdness after decades of good use.
      I'm ready for some new tech. The new GX fits the bill.
      If it wasn't for the new tech and the need for better gas mileage, id buy newer used LX or Land Cruiser.

    I would think the deletion of panoramic roof on the Overtrail was warranty and long term customer protective measure. Should one be actually off roaded, the car's chassis will flex and no doubt the huge roof might be prone to leaks after a while. Nice video!

    • @Superdada
      @Superdada ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Agree. And if the Overtrail is used as intended for actual overlanding, presumably there would be roof racks and gear up top. No point in having a panoramic roof to stare at your gear.

    I disagree! The best decision ever was to not put a third row seat on the overtrail! This is a offroad variation that is supposed to be a overlander vehicle, and most people that do that are a crew of one or two people, there is nocneed for a third row seat, and I will go as far as to say that it will be awesome if also you can easily detach the second row too! In what circumstances will you take 8 people off road! Lol. You will be better served with the other models that have a third row seat. We don't need a pano roof either! Pano roof and third row seats are very heavy and add complexity that you dont need in a overlander vehicle.

    • @shaneeka4
      @shaneeka4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed. I do not want a 3rd row in my offroader. I'd rather have flat storage for my fridge and other gear.

    • @edmundcharles5278
      @edmundcharles5278 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm on the rails about the third seat. If you are hauling people, 'yes' a third row makes sense; however, it you are an adult off-roader type you may not be worrying about more than 4 adults and children.

    • @12masterr
      @12masterr ปีที่แล้ว

      @Edmund Charles well,that's my point, after all, this is the overtrail model, intended for off road, you are not taking 6 people and gear off road!. If you need a third row seat just buy the other luxury models and they all have it!

    • @restarea590
      @restarea590 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point but I think either way you should be able to remove the 3rd row seat and also some people might like it with 3rd row because they’re not always off-roading plus some people might want it for the style and design it’s sportier with aggressive lines.

    • @12masterr
      @12masterr ปีที่แล้ว

      @RestArea yes, it will be perfect if they have a third row like the old 470,that you can flip to the side or completely remove, my beef with third row seats is that I donned one, and they are not only heavy but take all the space out. Look at the new sequoia and the horrible rear cargo space! A camry have more cargo area!

    I think Toyota/Lexus nailed the design. The Overtrail variant is targetted at buyers who actually take their GX off-road. So the deletion of the 3rd row seating & sunroof makes a whole lot of sense. Real overlanders, will generally fit a drawer system, incl. a fridge at the rear section. So the 3rd row seats are removed anyway. And again most overlanders will have a roof rack system on top, making a sunroof useless. And as you've pointed out the GX is based on the TNGA platform, which is the same platform used in the new LC300, thus why it's (GX) wider and also have a higher towing capacity. And because of this platform, it should be a very capable off-road vehicle. If you plan to take more than 5 people offroad, it will most likely mean a short day trip and won't be too far into the wilderness (otherwise, where will you put all your gear for 6+ people?). So for this purpose the other variants should be more than capable tackling those terrain - no need for the Overtrail. The 20"-22" tyres are targetted for the luxury buyers. Buyers considering the GX in lieu of a luxury sedan etc. and don't really intend in taking it REAL off-road. Lexus is being smart by covering all the bases.

    Dave, thank you for those 25 highlights on the new GX 550. Now, 4X4 enthusiasts have to wait what Toyota will introduce as 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado for USA. As far as safety features, equipment, trims, options and definitely, the standard equipment. Based on those vehicle parameters, I will decide between GX or Land Cruiser. However, I do not think that Toyota, itself will challenge its luxury product. So with this main factor to consider, I will make myself on the waiting list for a new Lexus GX 550 Outlander + as follow:

    I think the styling of the new GX 550 is excellent, and the increased performance at the same fuel efficiency is a welcome change. I will be looking to trade in my ‘23 Nori Green Pearl GX 460.
    Disappointed that the hybrid power train was gonna be on the turbo 4.
    My color list is Nori Green, Earth, Incognito, and Nebula Gray - can’t wait to see how Nori Green looks on the 550 😍
    Which trim to pick - that is the question for me. The overtrail seems like that’s “the one”, but at near $80k… ouch

    I was really hoping that Lexus would offer a 2WD GX. I feel there is a large sector of the market that doesn't ever need or want an off road vehicle for several reasons, but would still like a classy luxury SUV. The additional front end weight and feel, better fuel economy, less items to maintain, less cost to that market segment are just a few potential buyer attractions.
    This is coming from an owner of a 2WD 2007 Toyota 4Runner, 4.7LV8 consistently getting a average 19mpg, 7200 lbs. towing capacity that was built in Japan, side by side with the 2007 GX. I'm 68 years old and this the best vehicle I have ever owned.

    Absolute incredible comparison as always David. Thank you very much. My main concern with this new gen of GX is that, where does Lexus position this suv now. It is same size or even bigger than LX. GX in the past was positioned as a mid size SUV while LX was always full size SUV, right now with this generation, this is not the case anymore.

  • @Superdada
    @Superdada ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Absolutely love the new GX. I’ve already put down a small deposit on one at my dealer in Colorado.
    Two surprises for me:
    One is the somewhat mediocre approach and departure angles. If they are really targeting the Defender and maybe the G-Wagon, those have much better approach/departure angles. I can already foresee damage to the front and rear overhangs.
    Second: I’m new to the Lexus brand, I am fortunate enough to have several Porsche models and the premium models are just dripping in very high quality leather. The NuLuxe is a surprising thing for me. Apparently people that have it like it, but it’s still a synthetic vinyl product. (I wish the Overtrail had the option for real leather).

    • @cloudypac

  • @dysutopia4238
    @dysutopia4238 ปีที่แล้ว

    For off roading, you don't need the hybrid 4-cyl in the OverTrail trim. The realistic 17 mpg has to be based on the OverTrail as that would be line with a lifted 33-inch tire (rolling resistance and air drag) and added weight for a "truck" build from auxiliary suspension setup, protective plates for belly, rock sliders, etc. Quite reasonable, and not fudged number for a truck build. A 13 to 15 mpg range would be bad

    David I have watched a lot of other reports on the GX and I have been waiting for your take. This surprise approach is a great perspective. I was wondering if maybe the GX would come with the 6 cylinder hybrid and this would allow room for the land cruiser under this with say the 2.4 hybrid? I will want a 5 seater but I will miss the side opening door that we have on our current GX. Maybe the land cruiser will have a side opening door? I agree with most of your surprises but to me many of them were positive surprises. I would like the 5 seat option in the lower priced version as well. I also hope the lower price models get better gas mileage than the staed number. I was shocked by the towing capacity and the poor gas mileage.
