This is a medical device used for the treatment of patients having heart surgery. The innovation is at concept stage. It has a development plan in place for prototyping and testing, and a patent application in process currently at the PCT phase with a very favourable search report.
The innovation is a simple modification to the control module of a heart-lung machine which allows it to provide counterpulsation and thus function as an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP). This means that at the touch of a button, immediate support is provided for an ailing heart at the end of the operation.
The device will read the patient’s heartbeat and time the roller pump on the heart-lung machine to push blood forward during diastole thereby increasing the pressure in the aorta and improving coronary perfusion; and draw blood back during systole, reducing the blood pressure in the aorta and thus the afterload against which the heart has to pump, making the heart’s pumping action more effective.
The main driver for further uptake of technology is improved product design and functionality. Growth in emerging markets (India and China) is substantial.
