- Today we explore some hidden parts of Bangkok that you won't find on the usual Bangkok itinerary.
Bangkok has a rich history of canals that dates back to the eighteenth century. Starting from a few khlongs, the intricate canal network in Bangkok expanded to over a hundred at a time, leading Bangkok the name 'The Venice of the East'. However, with modernization, a lot of them have been filled up and today only a fraction of the original Bangkok canals remain. Exploring them remains one of the more fun things to do in Bangkok
We start off by exploring Khlong Bang Luang Floating Market where we check some artsy shops, cafes and art galleries. Later we opt for a canal boat tour around Bangkok’s canals (Khlongs). For today’s canal boat tour, we opt for a traditional Bangkok longboat or Bangkok tail boat which has been used since centuries along the waters of the Bangkok khlongs.
Our first stop is at a local orchid farm where the owner gives us a tour of the flowers and crops they grow on the farm. Apart from orchids, they grow a variety of fresh ingredients used in Thai cuisine such as lemongrass, chillies or kaffir lime.
We then make our way to the famous Wat Paknam (commonly called the Big Buddha Statue), and marvel at the giant golden Buddha from our boat. It is truly a sight to behold. We also come across some monitor lizards across the canals, either basking in the sun or swimming in the waters of the canals.
Finally on our Hidden Bangkok quest, we come across a boat vendor selling some snacks to locals on the canals, and we try out some delicious snacks that she cooks on her small boat.
Booking a Bangkok canal tour is certainly one of the more unique things to do in Bangkok. We hope you enjoyed our Hidden Bangkok tour! Let us know if you have any stories to share as well from the Venice of the East.
