My Aja was born in Basti U.P in 1889. He came to Fiji in 1911 on a ship -Mutlah #2. His name was Tamai and fathers name was Sarup. He lived to be 96 yrs old.His jahaji bhai and later samdhi was Maikoo.
This is the first and only live interview I have seen. My father was a Girmitiya who was brought to Fiji in 1911. We missed listening to any of his true stories. The countryside village where we lived in Fiji had a few Girmitiya. Today they are remembered. Thank you for this video.

This did broaden my knowledge about the hardship my people had to face in immediate past. But I would like to know more about this forced migration imposed on your people .
Raja Ram Toata Ram Sanadhaya returned to India after many years in Fiji and wrote a book which I have not been able to obtain.. The book was published in Lucknow.
I will certainly look for this book in Delhi 's Daryaganj book shops.... Krishnaji I must say that I am moved after reading the accounts of suffering ,exploitation and trauma of my people had to go because of European exploitation... We are those lucky Indians who are born in last two decades of India. Today i sincerely cherish and realize the importance of freedom and strength that we in India have now.i am working in USA with Indian passport and i see a lot of respect for Indians because of there Hard work and educational qualifications....But around 100-150 years ago Girmitiya Indians had no such respect and were balantly exploited and taunted as "coolies". i show my respect to your community, for there struggle in most arduous circumstances to rise in life through Hard work,Education ,and by following democratic conduct in Civil life of there country of residence. Girmitiya people had no support or backing of there mother country. you were left all alone to fend for yourself in foreign land ,under colonial master's and in a society completely alien and hostile to you. We in India , are tremendously lucky that we have access to good education,jobs in India and demand for our skills in Foreign Land.We have strong backing of our Nation in case of any un-towards incidents.I always know at the back of my mind that in case of any emergency i have a "Home" to fallback to... I curse the Indian elites of that time, and i feel sorry for the weakness of my fore-fathers in there inability to protect the children mother-India from such European sponsored exploitation. Krishnaji ...today's India knows little about the suffering ,struggle and problems of PIO people had to go through (and they are still going through in present time too). I feel ,that you must write to current Indian Government in center(New Delhi) to put a chapter in the Textbooks of Teenage student's curriculum ,telling them about your story. We as a society failed to protect you (and many) from the misery and exploitation of other races...but we must not fail or falter now in our duty, in giving your people all the help and co-operation we can extend.

I am not sure of the process they had for Suriname but I am sure it was the same for all the countries that received the Girmitiyas. I was born in Fiji and my first introduction was through word of mouth from the Girmityas themselves. Since then many scholars have written on the subject. One or two of them are Fiji Indians. Try and contact one Dr Satish Rai who now lives in Australia. Check him out on the net. He did a thesis for his doctorate and may be able to send you some information. If I can be of more help I would be pleased to assist.
