  • We've all seen it before. You set up a new tactic, win every friendly, then - first game of the season - you get absolutely thumped.
    That's about to change!!
    It's easy to miss significant, structural issues during preseason, with wins glossing over weaknesses, and facing opposition who themselves are not fully fit and are unable to take advantage. I take a look at the process I use for tweaking my tactic during preseason, with focus on identifying a style, and analysing individual performances & partnerships to inform changes.

    This is part of the One Shots series - A set of single-season challenges, where we try to upstage real life managers by outperforming them in the 22/23 season. We've outperformed Unai Emery, and made Dejan Stanković look a fool. Next up, we set to correct the course for an Ajax team who looked lost under Alfred Schreuder.
    In a change of approach, I'll be looking at specific scenarios through the season and exploring how I handle them, both good and bad. At the end, there'll be a full on documentary to cover my storytelling cravings.

      Genuinely, I don't think you need to make big changes each season, just minor tweaks. If you notice a player is suddenly less effective, watch him throughout the game. He might be being marked more effectively, or not doing the things you expect, and it's just a case of adding an instruction or two. Or it might be that teams are being more cautious against you, and you need to increase tempo to help move the ball forward before they can regain their defensive shape fully, etc...

      You most definitely can do this, too! It obviously helps to have a firm idea of what you expect your players to be doing at any given moment - but just focus on one thing at a time. I often find clicking on a player at the start of the game, so I can track their movement through the whole game helps. (Note: if you Ctrl + Click, you can select multiple players to always have their name above their head). Then just pause it periodically, and ask yourself...is this what I expect from this player. If you repeatedly say no...see if there's a pattern.

    • @mustermannfm
      @mustermannfm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For this save, I used comprehensive. Earlier in the game cycle, as I'm getting familiar with how things have changed since the previous version, I will play on full.
      That said, all the observations in this video would've been caught on extended. Whilst I make a mental note as the games are playing, I watch back the extended highlights and pause each twice. Once at the start of a highlight, and once just before the main action. This is where I can look at structure, and see if players are in the positions I would expect them to be.

    cant beat a bit of poetry, I like how you worked to get the mez moving wide more, I also found the hold up ball often allowed time for them to get wide. in your game with the defensive issues on the left, would you think a cover CB would have stopped all them issues you had, my only worry is that space the cover allows in front but maybe your 3 defensive mids you have who set up might cover it? I have found the PF annoying so nice you settled on DLF, the PF chases to much so when your team does get the ball back, they are not in the position to be available for a pass. top top video, you gained a new sub

    • @mustermannfm
      @mustermannfm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you 🙏
      With re: defensive issues on the left; changing the inverted wing-back to support and adding Trap Outside helped close that gap that seemed to form. As for in possession, we accept that the 2-3-5 build up shape is vulnerable on the flanks, hence the aggressive counter press to prevent issues at source. That said, that's also why I was very keen to get the outside midfielders in the 3 to sit in that space between the flanks and half space as it allows us to be a little more covered in that respect.
      With my Villa save, we opted for a 3-2 build up shape, partly because we didn't have the same quality compared to the league as Ajax do, but also because of recovery distance. We needed the wing-backs to provide width on both sides, and so they had a lot of ground to cover when we lost the ball. Subsequently we need that extra width in the first line of defence to help cover the flanks. With Ajax, we've got more quality, but also don't NEED to push both full-backs high, so when we're in possession are players are also a lot closer to their defensive positions. That helps with both the pressing aspect and regrouping into our eventual shape.

    This is great! Definitely something to refer too every time something doesn't work in my tactic. Do you make any notes of what to look for? Do you change something immediately or do you wait to happen repeatedly? Do you... I have so many questions. How long does it take you to analyze a game?

    • @mustermannfm
      @mustermannfm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you 🙏
      I'll try and answer everything:
      - No, I don't take notes, but I do have a firm idea of my expectations. I shouldn't, but I often have preconceived ideas of where weaknesses might be - for example I went into the first game concerned about the spacing of the midfield 3, so I had something I was looking out for.
      - I am definitely looking for patterns rather than single occurrences. I honestly could've made a 20 minute video on the movement of the mezzala in that first game and how in some circumstances I don't want him to drift wide 🤣 During preseason especially, I am happy to watch it play out and not make adjustments until the next game. I will also check other previous games as well to verify if something is a tactical issue. The analytical chalkboard is very useful for this.
      - Not long. Most of the analysis is done during the game, and then maybe 10 minutes or so after it. In friendlies, I tend not to follow the ball that much - I don't really care if we score against AFC, so my eyes will be looking out for things that seem wrong.

    Nice video, mate. I've been wanting to use 2-3-5 formation in my save with the composition of attacking five of Winger - Attacking Mid - Striker - Winger - Attacking Fullback (or mirrored) to make it multidimensional. I use a bit more conservative formation rather than asymmetrical and it indeed works, but not that consistent. After watching this video, I think asymmetrical is the way and really looking forward to implement this in my save. A question tho, if I want to put my DLP (Def) on the defensive pivot rather than on central positions, what do you reckon a position I should use for the another central mids? I think of BBM to perhaps make a nice combination between the SS and CWB, or Carrillero to cover that flank of attacking CWB. I'd love to hear your perspective. Cheers mate.

    • @mustermannfm
      @mustermannfm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I will often only recommend asymmetrical if the behaviour you want from a player can't be got from a more symmetrical shape. Symmetry can be very handy for maintaining defensive structure and marking responsibilities.
      As with anything tactical, it will depend on your players - so it's difficult to say without knowing your team; but generally you want players in the midfield 3 to be able to provide support between the defence and midfield. For this reason I wouldn't recommend players who are likely to get too involved in the attacking game. You don't want them completely uninvolved, but you want them to be in position to help keep the ball moving and link play. BWM, CAR, CM, DLP are great roles for this, but if you have a player with traits that see them abandon their position, it won't matter either way!

    • @mustermannfm
      @mustermannfm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you're set on the 3-1-3-3, then you're going to have to accept that your vulnerable on the counter. It's an accepted trade off - you play with the intent of dominating the ball and the adage of "the best form of defence is offence" - and there isn't much you can do structurally. Your best option is to press intensely to prevent counter attacks before they develop.
      There is, of course, no point me going into detail when there's already a fantastic video on this released only a week ago by @CoachRoan: th-cam.com/video/O4FmOGkzLzo/w-d-xo.html

      The way I see it, it's much better to look at the ideas & principles and how to apply them rather than focussing on the answer. If I can do just a little to demystify tactics, then I'm happy!
      My initial reaction to the formation you described is that I'm not sure where your creativity is coming from. Whilst Shadow Strikers have Take More Risks, they join the attacking line quite early during attacks, so you'll end up with quite a flat front line. This is likely to make it easy for teams to defend against.
      If you have someone who is a good dribbler or passer you might want to consider a more creative role for them that will see them sit a lot more frequently in that space behind the strikers. Should help with breaking down the opposition a bit.
