    I'm also in awe of what he does with his voice; those growls; the high notes he can sing/scream; the length of a note he can hold. There is no one song where he shows all his repertoire of abilities as it is impossible to fit them into one piece. I liked the original of this quite well. His rendition nearly creates a different song just by the different vibe he gives it with those growls, whispers and that ending. Yes there is extensive training involved; he has emphasized that and that there are important things to do to protect the voice so that the vocalist can continue to produce this sort of work. I just love what he has done with this. He is an incredible artist.

    Dan Vasc has found a very healthy way to sing these growls and distorted vocals. Metal music touches us, it embraces us physically. Fans welcome this embrace, respond positively to it, and feel stronger afterwards, while others reject it, get stomachaches, or simply want to get away. Metal is either loved or hated. Women in particular will be attracted to Dan's Metal Voice, because there's nothing wrong with getting a hug from Dan.

    love the growl that doesn't seem to effect his throat at all. he makes it look so easy. gotta be a secret to it.

      It's not that hard. You don't really do it through your larynx. You kind of have to drop the back of your throat down into your chest and then kind of pull your whole head down, as well...that's not saying it right, but it's kind of that effect. My singing range (I've been singing all my life since I was tiny) had always been (until about 2007) way down into the low bass range, and all the way up into the highest soprano range. Then rheumatoid arthritis hit HARD, and doubled me over, to where I couldn't stand straight, and I lost pretty much everything (which was SO hard, because all I EVER wanted to do was sing), except my bass range. So "growling" became even easier for me. My grandkids all love to hear Grandma sing bass, and do this kind of stuff.
      In 2017, both of my hips were replaced, and since then I've been working to get back at least a goodly part of my range, and get past the two difficult register changes that used to be "a piece of cake" for me (sigh). Since Dan and his "Amazing Grace" came into sight, I've been watching him very carefully, and realizing how much muscle memory I had lost. Watching his stance, and the way he uses his throat and upper body muscles has given me back more and more of my range every day, for which I'm EXTREMELY grateful!
      Recently, also, I had commented similar to the above (not the growl part...the losing my voice part), on one of his reels on Facebook, and a few days later, I got a surprise e-mail from him, with the link to download his ebook called "HEALTHY VOICE," which is one of his teaching tools. It's FANTASTIC, easy to understand, and once again, brought back memories of healthy singing that I had pretty much completely forgotten while battling the RA so hard for so many years. Dan is a blessing, all around! 😀

    Dan has perfect posture, and amazing breathing techniques that support his ability to do these kind of things with his voice without hurting himself. I have always been in awe of all the amazing things he is able to do with his voice. He has very quickly become my favorite singer of all time, he is extraordinary…💕🎶💕

    Your reaction made me smile. I do like this song but I know it will not be for everyone. I think it is a great example of some of the unique sounds he is capable of, the highs, the lows, the whispers, the growls, etc. He is not afraid of trying anything. In one of his songs, Wurthering Heights, he sings as the ghost of Cathy to Heathcliff and pulls it off very well.

    He’s doing a metal growl not a metal scream. You may enjoy all of Dan’s Christmas songs and opera covers. They are absolutely beautiful. No metal screams or growls,if that’s not your thing.

    Thank you so much for sharing your reaction to this epic cover from Dan. When I heard you say that you were going to listen to this song I was wondering what you would think of it. My first time hearing it I wasn’t quite sure what I thought of it but after listening to it a few times I have grown to love it. It’s like vocal gymnastics and I am in awe of the versatility of his voice. With so many different ranges of notes and techniques I find it difficult to comprehend how he was able to sing it. Looking forward to hearing your reaction to “Bohemian Rhapsody” which he sings so beautifully. 🎶🌟🎶

    • @GrandmasGoneGamingLW
      @GrandmasGoneGamingLW ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This one isn't done in a single take or track. As with a lot of his songs, he records each harmony track separately, and then they are mixed. Also, he doesn't do any lip-syncing. He makes several recordings of each track, then chooses the ones that are the best (and the recording is visual, as well as vocal). Once he has determined which ones he likes best for each part (melody, harmony, background, rhythm, etc.) he mixes them--usually himself.
      He has three videos called "Ask Dan Vasc," that will tell you a LOT about how he goes about all of it, and what type of equipment he uses (which includes him upgrading some things before his second one of those three videos). They're very well done.

    I love how he does this song. To me, it's spiritual, to Evenescence its a dream/fog of love gone missing, I have no clue what Dan intended, but wow, he sounded like inner demons praying like hell for deluverance.
    I liked your descriptions a lot too.
    Right on! Looking forward to your upcoming reviews.

    I watched a vocal coach react to one of Dan's metal songs and she was saying how all of the different positions that Dan puts his face in create the sounds he's after. The jaw, the cheeks, the teeth, and the eyebrows/forehead all allow the resonance that he needs. Dan has said that after singing like this he doesn't do much speaking with people for awhile in order to give his vocal chords a rest. And yes, Dan's years of training, part of which was with a metal coach, have put these skills into his vocal arsenal. Thank you for this reaction!

    Well what a way to start the day (7am here) I LOVED your reaction, apologies for not including 'growls,' along with frys and screams! I think the word 'awe' is absolutely the best way to describe it and it shows yet another side to Dan and what he's capable of doing. His musical interpretations and the way he communicates a song is incredible. I think that's why he won't sign to a label as he likes to have total autonomy over his work and he seems to be doing pretty well without one! Looking forward to the next one! Thanks again!

    The angry scowling look is actually part of the tecnique used to produce the grit or vocal fry used in most of this song. (Not the screams or deep growls) It is produced in the front of the face/sinus cavity... not in the back of the throat, so, that is why the scrunched up face on metal singers. If it causes pain or irritation it is not being done right and can damage the voice. Done right, grit can be turned on and off at will ... David Draiman of Disturbed is another master of this tecnique. The deep growls are done a bit differently from deeper down, i think, so dont affect the shape of the face the same, nor does the screams. After hearing Dan's metalizing ... i really want to learn to growl, too. 😂
    If you want to hear another vocalist releasing the demons, 😅 check out Jinjer - Pisces, a woman that will blow your mind. 😊

    I was watching his throat and I saw no sign of any strain. And, I think someone, on another of his songs that you did, pointed out that he was trained by Ken Tamblin, who certainly has trained his share of metal singers. If you listen to vocal coaches who react, they will tell you, certainly better than I can, what techniques are used to produce that sound, without damaging the voice. A few i have listened to will tell you that it involves using the false cords, instead of the true vocal cords, and that altering the shape of the face can alter the resonance, thus the sound, that is produced. Whatever it is, vocal fry is really cool, though there are so many variations of it, and I will admit to not being fond of vocalists who use a deep growl all the time. Dan, I thought, interspersed throughout the song.

  • @GrandmasGoneGamingLW
    @GrandmasGoneGamingLW ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's "growling," not "screaming." He's actually closer to "screaming," in other parts, as when he says, "Frozen inside, without your touch..."
    If you think that held note was long, you NEED to listen to "Black Wind, Fire, and Steel," and be SURE to go ALL the way to the end (including the outro). If you don't, you'll miss something VERY awesome!!! 😀
    As for this one, there's a REALLY good WIKI article about how this song came about. It was written by Amy Lee (the leader of Evanescence...which you have been saying correctly). There's a VERY poignant and moving history to this song.
    You have picked up, though, on how Dan actually interprets this. You said it right, about getting rid of the demon (knowing the song's history). Also, it also affects me as the person asking to be awoken, not knowing HOW to wake up, even with help. The growled words are, "Wake me up. I can't wake up!" There's a desperation there, that I KNOW. If you were to go and see my latest video (from 08/23), there's a part just after midway, that tells a very condensed version of my life testimony. The video is called "The Beginning, The Middle, and The End." What I do is read out loud, things that I have written. I'd just link it for you, but I've found that sometimes when I do that, my whole comments disappear--depends on your settings. Also, I used this song as a "bonus" link on my video called "08/01/2023-A Strange Dream Sequence (Documented 07/28/2023)."

    Dan explained last week on his and Beardo's Bro Science chat, that the deep throat growl doesn't actually come through his voice box or throat rather he uses his upper chest & esophageal area that's why his voice doesn't get damaged, I guess too just lots of practice. It was hilarious watching the other 2 guys trying to achieve it as well as Dan, nah not gonna happen! Also he said he has to train up prior to singing these types of songs and stays away from air conditioners, they are a no no for that beautiful voice!
