    I’ve had one of these Generation Nex consoles for many years and primarily bought it because its unique ability to play both Famicom & NES without adapters plus it’s sleek & cool looking. Since getting an Analogue NT It’s become a discussion piece.

      Yeah eventually I want to do a video on nes-on-a-chip game systems it's an essential part of the history of it. But I don't really recommend it to anyone unless you are a nerd in 2005 that actually had one back in the day and that's me.

    Is it me or the sound are more high-pitched than usual in SMB 1 ?! The other game looks ok that's weird !
    I totally forgot about the existence of Gen Nex ! Nice vid !

      @8bitjoystick  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yeah, it is not the most accurate way to play NES games. It was one of the first major NES on a chip systems but not the best. The systems by hyperkin are better in almost every way except for specific nostalgia. They actually have HDMI output also

    I really liked the way it looked as a console. I had their wireless SNES controllers for a while. They worked really well with USB adapters.

      @8bitjoystick  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh man. My brain completely forgot that they also made wireless Super Nintendo controllers and the fact that they sold them in metal lunch boxes. I looked it up and dusted off that part of my brain where it was kept.

    Remember when they said it had a high compatibility rate, that only applies to commercial games (actual games that were released for the NES and Famicom at the time). After market games, bootlegs, homebrews, repros, and fan made games are not counted towards that rate.

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well that's right up to when they said that it wasn't going to be based on a NES-on-a-chip and then people opened it up and found in NES-on-a-chip.

    I've been debating getting either a Generation Nex or a AV Famicom. To go with my recent pickup from the FB CRT TV PNW listing group. So your review was perfect timing! Love see your cat in videos.

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Well I regard the AV Famicom as Nintendo's greatest achievement so I would get the AV famicom with a 72 pin to 60 pin adapter so you could use US cartridges on it.
      I need to make a video about how amazing the AV famicom is. But it's not even close. With the AV famicom you can use everdrives, famicom disk systems, expanded audio, everything. I even got my system modded so I can use the zapper.

      @8bitjoystick good to know, thank you! I completely forgot that some NES emulator consoles have trouble with everdrives.

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Troysef This is a clone system, not an emulator. It is re-creating a NES compatible system with alternative hardware, not done in software. Everdrives work best in original hardware, FPGA systems or really good clone systems (basically only the latest Hyperkin clone systems)

      Like with a lot of clone systems, they're really more of a historical oddity. But I used to have one and had mixed feelings about it. But we're at the point where you can be nostalgic for deliberately retro things and this qualifies. I'm not quite ready for 2004 to be 20 years ago, but this was around the time where people started talking about retro game systems being retro and so this system was a big part of that

  • @WhatsOnMyShelf
    @WhatsOnMyShelf 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I remember wanting one of these at the time of their release. I saw them at Pink Godzilla as well and I recall them being expensive. I later looked at reviews where they were trashed them for technical issues, so I passed. It does look like a pain to insert / remove NES games. Does this work with a Game Genie? It makes me wonder whether you could leave that plugged in and insert games into its butt.

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well the cleaning cartridges are a little bit bigger than regular cartridges so it's bad but it's not as bad as it looks in the video.
      Honestly back around 2004 there really weren't any cartridge adapters on the market, so this was one of the only ways that you could really get into famicom cartridge collecting.
      I don't think the game genie would fit.
      It's a hard system to recommend unless you actually have a reason to be nostalgic about it. But I totally need to do a video on NOAC systems

    The Japanese Zelda II rewarded skilled players. I can beat the game straight through without game over it and it is so awesome getting the sword to level 8 right away and kicking everything’s ass.

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, as soon as I got an everdrive I played through the Japanese version of Legend of Zelda 2. And it really made me fear death. I mean, the English game doesn't really have a lot of consequences for failure, but when you're trying to level up in the Japanese version and you screw up and jump into a pit by God that is painful. I often think that the modern conveniences of rewind and quick save takes out the sense of accomplishment that you get by having real consequences for failure.
      It was cool that I could get an IPS patched version of the famicom disk system game with the English translation

      Not only does the Japanese version not work, but the US NES version that doesn't use any special chips doesn't work. That's sort of appalling. But hey, this was one of the first clone systems to really make note of itself but not as good as older clone systems that used real chips

      I purchased mine for $70 online. Previously there was only one sale on price charting at $150 which is ridiculous because you need more than one data point, in statistics class they taught us that you really need data points. But with anything collectible you need a seller and a buyer and an agreed upon price and if you don't have that then you just have unsold merchandise. Initially they were asking $100 for but then they didn't have any takers so they lowered the price to $70 and I got it.

      If I ever open it up, I'm tempted to take a Dremel to some of the bits of plastic on the inside to see if you can make it go in and out any easier, but it does seem to have quite the death grip.
      The famicom cartridges are not that bad. But for the NES, you need to basically grab the back of the system with your other hand and then yank. The cleaning cartridges were a lot worse than the actual games, but still there is quite the death grip on the actual carts.

  • @OkieOrganix

    For most clone consoles you need a Chinese everdrive. Krikzz is ok but only seems to work on original hardware, or fpga AVS or NT mini. Chinese ones work on a lot of clone consoles. 🤷‍♂️ $200+ for a drive that only works on very few consoles vs $40 that plays on most. 🤔

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is a bit of an overkill. I'll probably stick in a bootleg multi-cart and call it good once I am done with my next video on it. I wish you could have a NES and Famicom cart inserted in the same time but it will only work with one cart inserted at a time. I hope this video shows just how bad the DEATHGRIP was.

      You are absolutely right. The color is not right with the sky, there's a little bit of the screen showing on the left. It's not cut off in the right place. And of course the sound is not the same. Still this was pretty impressive around 2005 which is almost 20 years ago.
      But the only people who should have this system are people who had one back in the day or people who are weirdly into video game history. I am both

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Well many of the first Dendys back in the day used actually used legit clone hardware of each check before mushing it all together, but they probably moved to NES on a chip systems. Dendy started off importing clone systems from Taiwan. Messiah what's the name of the company that made this and they claimed that they were not using an NES on a chip but they totally did.
