- South of Sydney there is a bridge to nowhere, built in the 1980s as part of the never-completed Maldon - Dombarton railway line. Intended to cross the Nepean River near the township of Maldon, only the approach spans on each side of the gorge were built before the project was cancelled, where they remain today.
Sure to see this muddled Ozy rail infrastructure on Abandoned Engineering a TV program showing some of the worlds interesting and sometimes unworldly / wierd /crazy /engineering projects. BTW thank you steven hamer for sharing!

The premier of the time was lobbied my "clutha" transport company to abandon it ...to keep the coal trucks in business.

to get to this side you need to turn into wilton airport road when you getto the fork in the road turn left that go around the back of the air port i did find a gate that had a chain on it but was not locked good spot for picnic

Greiner cancelled this because his mates from” Cluther” truck company lobbied against it. Needles to say Cluther trucks got the contract for coal transport.

ive been on the wilton side of the railway bridge its pretty easy to get to it just have to cross a bridge above the highway that is used to connect land and transport animals.

Wow I have never heard of this project.
Thatcherite free marketeer Nick Greiner did this. I read it cost more to can the project than to have finished it off. Neville Wran started a great project only for that despot to come along.

The railway is 70% complete apart from the completion of few tunnels and laying track.
Always wanted to take a closer look at this bridge. How did you get access to the eastern side?
Shows the stupidity of the State government that paid out the contractors and never completed this link. I have been told that it would have been cheaper to complete it.
They should've fully constructed the line instead of abandoning the project half way
it cost more to leave it than finish it off , all the contract companys had to be payed even though they didnt do the work .good for them but waste of tax dollars
I literally just discovered this on maps while following the railway line from Hill Top to Campbelltown
They even put the overhead wiring supports on it - pity they don't have any electric locos now. I wonder how they planned to span the gorge?

That's the issue isn't it? Governments of today wanting to privatise everything.
If this link had been completed thirty years ago when it was commenced it would provide a great asset for linking the Western Sydney Airport (under construcion) to the Illawarra region including Port Kembla. Logic would tell us that it would remove a lot of truck movements from western sydney also. Could also provide a link direct to Campbelltown for hopefully a fast train on the east coast.
An earlier comment hit the nail on the head. The project was abandoned as a "mate's deal" by the Greiner Liberal Govt four decades ago. Had the project been completed the Illawarra region would have a link to the Western Sydney airport and a freight line to the western reaches of Sydney. It would have given the opportunity to save lives by removing some of the heavy vehicle transport that rolls along the M1 and on through Wollongong.
A classic example of small minded government giving the middle finger to the community.

A disgrace to see how private enterprise with vested interest can override what would have been a far more efficient an far more environmentally friendly way to move the coal. Let’s hope all the coal trucks moving through the region clogs and destroys roads.

not sure , drove down a dirt road which follows the rail corridor , no signs that say your trespassing

But seriously, this needs to be finished and duplicated. Great line for commuters Wollongong to Campbelltown. Too many University educated bozo's stopping it. University should go back to producing QUALITY. Not quantity graduates.
grl8862 Nowhere near enough traffic to justify finishing this line. The Western Coal Field is down to one mine and passenger traffic from Western Sydney to Wollongong is not enough either.
dat581 Lets disagree to agree. Build it and commuters will come. New Suburbs, Coles, Woolworths, traffic jams, it’s progress. Though we could stop all migration if you think too many new people?... Stop the invasion as Aboriginals call it since 1788. Lots of countries have non-immigration like Japan or China. Try buying land there. Food for University thought/debate.
grl8862 A massive cop out answer if ever there was one. No, the commuters won’t come and Wollongong is not the jobs market it once was. Traffic is minimal and won’t increase enough to justify finishing the line.

Great panoramic view of the Nepean Valley. This project was Neville Wran's baby intended for the transportation of coal from Tahmoor and Glenlee Washery to Port Kembla via a four kilometre long tunnel that hardly had any progress made on it. The construction period ran from 1983-1988 when the Greiner Government pulled the plug on it. Most of the time was spent on the duplication from Farmborough Heights to Dombarton with staunchion masts installed apart from what you see here. Nothing out here except cold temperatures, a mill relocated from Summer Hill and Maldon's Blue Circle Southern cement works 6:13 - 6.40.

For goodness sake, turn down that volume! Otherwise a bit of voice over and explanation would've been nice. It's good to see taxpayer money so well spent on brilliantly conceived, well-planned public works projects! With such beautiful scenery, maybe some enterprising soul can set up a zipline there. Just have plenty of those release forms handy.
