    So if anybody is wondering, the sign on the brick building is for the Scranton Gas & Water company that William Walker Scranton created to provide clean water becuase of the pollution caused by him and and his father's industries taking and dumping water in the Lackawanna River. They also created Lake Scranton at this time as well.

      Awesome history! In a little town of Hamilton, TX; 1909 began a cheap grade of track from Stephenville Texas North and South, which bought the old Gates railroad 🛤 that connected Hamilton. A 38 mile of track went from Hamilton to Comanche, TX to access the cotton gin. That line from 1919-1933 didn’t last till Hamilton built their own cotton gin. Aleman, Ireland, Levita, Gatesville, Lime City, Mound, McGregor and Waco completed the 116 miles of track till at the Great Depression, all that survived till January 1941, was the 35 miles of track from Hamilton to Gatesville... There are surviving St Louis Southwestern depots standing today, well as bridge supports and old right of way road beds.. too expensive to restore and operate.

    • @lawnmowermanTX

      This is based off prominent families in Hamilton, TX in the late 1870’s to 1907 when plans, funds were able to build a short line from Hamilton to Stephenville TX, the Leon River saw surges of water that destroyed the first railroad 🛤 attempts till the Gates families sold to then the Stephenville Texas North and South, then expansion led to St Louis and Southwestern. Based on old courthouse records, there was plenty of promissory notes to keep the railroad going till 1933, yet the last stretch of track remained till January 1941... To this day, there are “railroad dumps” or abandoned roadbeds, concrete signal semaphore bases, and surviving depots. From what I understand this was back when semaphores were still used during the age of steam locomotives 🚂. A bit of tribute to Central Texas railroad history circa 1908-1941 era of railroading.

    Exploring that Abandoned town of Greenville is one of my favorite local spots that i filmed. First building was the gas and water powerhouse built in 1910. last building was the pump house that they used for filling the old steam locomotives. At the end of that bridge was where the train yard used to be. You're a brave man for crossing that bridge but made for good footage. There's lots of other foundations and structures around. Winter time you get to see a whole lot more.

      @@samanthab1923 All the ruins are gone? The rail lines? Railroad associated buildings? The remnants of Greenville/Nay Aug Station?
      I mean I know they were supposed to have repurposed the other trestle/bridge with the SEVERELY rotted ties for construction equipment (for the upcoming 380/84 bridge replacement priject) and future development of a rail trail. I seem to recall seeing a video or two of people crossing that one after it was rehabilitated.

    Railroads are never Truly abandoned. Yes, they can be inactive for long periods of time. But, Unless the rails are removed, despite the tracks being missing in sections or maps showing as abandon. Rail Companies can Reactivate the tracks if there is a Need to. There was a section of Track(about 8 miles of track) not to far from me, about 30 miles away. that was inactive for about 70 years. CSX came in, removed bunch of trees and bushes, even a few shacks. They Repaired some of the tracks that needed. They are now actively using the rail a few time a week. So Hard to say if a Track is truly abandoned.

    • @InfraDecay
      @InfraDecay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it's fair to say it's abandoned when there's trees growing up in it and a non-profit is actively turning it into a walking trail 😂

      Once trees establish themselves the trackbed will need rebuilding; most of the ties will br rotten and useless and those timber bridges must have rotted without regular maintenance. In the case of this line for which there's no longer any freight traffic, rebuilding and reopening seem pointless.

  • @terrywhelan6651
    @terrywhelan6651 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The pipe (penstock) took water from a dam up stream gaining pressure as it dropped in height likely about 50 feet.
    It would eventually turn a turbine that was many times more efficient then a water wheel.
    I estimate it would produce between 75 to 120 hp depending on the drop.
    This system was is use circa 1865 to 1915.
    It was commonly replaced by steam power or converted to turn a generator to make electricity if the location was way off the electricity grid.

    I think you need one of these Monopod's from Amazon: amzn.to/31Ai0Hv . You'd be able to raise and lower your GoPro in hole's (basements, rafters, etc..). Plus it makes a nice walking stick

      The history! He used to tell me where all of the old switches were and where they went. He had rights to run into west P.A., all of Jersey, south into Maryland and into Manhattan. That's a lot of rails and knowledge.
