  • I built a shelter from a glow in the dark crazy fort den building kit and slept in it overnight. I used a transparent tarp to protect me from the elements and created a tunnel-like shelter from the kit. I get a fire going, cook a US Military MRE and camp out under the stars.

Constructing triangles and forming them into a geodesic dome might be the strongest structure you can make with that stuff. It would certainly be stronger than linked squares. You'd need a bigger tarp, of course.

Hey brother, next time you need to tie down a tarp without grommets take a small smooth stone, pinch it with the plastic and then tie a knot like two half hitches around the pinched part and then "Bob's your uncle" as you all say

Not sure if anyone has said this yet but most glow in the dark plastic products require some form of “charging” so to speak. Sit them in the light for a few hours and then they glow in the dark. If you pitched this straight away in the dim woods, wouldn’t have charged much to glow much.

This shelter frame system is a fine idea. A few years ago, I did something similar for my twin five-year-old grandchildren. As with your family, they LOVED it! I used larger PVC piping and a variety of PVC joints to provide a more robust series of structures. I also needed to glue some tubular joints to prevent the works from flexing and sliding apart. I found the 'tarp' or whatever was an important structural element: the edges needed to be fastened down in some fashion that would last. I used grommets and pegs. For cold weather use, I lined a fairly large welding tarp with Reflectix to make the most of a (somewhat) long fire with a back screen. MY preferred structure was a low Baker-style frame. An A-Frame style worked as well.

Dont know if you've done this but in the late 80s/early 90s we used to have this thing called a 'WendyHouse' which was basically a play tent. Made up of plastic poles and a cloth or plastic based cover/tarp thrown over it that normally looked like a house - hence the name.
I dont know if you can still get them but it might be fun to see you try spending the night in one or throwing the cover away and throwing a tarp over the frame. If you could buy two wendyhouse kits and link them together, you'd have an absolute mansion!
They used to be sold at places like Toys'R'Us and Argos. T.R.U are obviously long gone by now but Argos and other toy stores similar to T.R.U might still stock them.

You were born in the wrong era….. you need to check out 70s and 80s TINKER TOYS….. a kit of wooden dowels (pencil thickness) of 4-5 different lengths and wooden disc about an inch and a half to two inches across and about an inch thick. Each disk had either 8 or 12 socket holes drilled into its edge with a single hole at it center that went all the way through ….. with some of them having four addition holes that made it look like the number five symbol on a dice cube ….. using that concept its becomes possible to scale it up using large diameter dowels for the rods and discs made from laminating 2-3 one inch by 12 inch board material …..
Oh and instead of an army cot…… look into a military stretcher kits … it can become a low profile cot by propping the handles on both ends with logs , rocks , etc

In my experience, glow-in-the-dark material usually needs to be charged up, by, say, running a flashlight or other lightsource over it and close to the material...then it glows, but the glowing slowly dissipates. I'm curious, when making forts for the kids indoors, does that structure hold up the weight of a blanket? It doesn't look strong enough to support the weight. I'd also be curious to see how it does in heavy rain and/or wind.

The Guys at the Jolly channel reviewed MREs from several different countries: The US, UK, Russia, France, Germany, definitely Korea and Singapore, maybe even Italy, and Poland. I don't remember. I think they said that France's was the most high quality food, but that Korea's was phenomenal. Of course one of the gentlemen from Jolly is part Korean, and studied in Korea, so he loves the food. [Korean Englishman.]
Those Glow in the Dark plastics need 6-8 hours of direct sunlight to glow like the wrapper.
A Geodeisc Dome, would probably offer the most space under neath, but you would need a large tarp to cover that.

Faint glow because it wasn't charged with enough light once it was dark. Any daylight that charged it was already released over time as it got darker and darker. Needed to charge the pieces with a bright floodlight for at least 15 minutes as soon as it was dark enough to need artificial light tonsee in the dark.

I'm gonna 'map out' where stuff will go though, like eight squares for the sleeping area, four squares for the bags and stuff, then a little L shaped sitting area. 😂 Yeah i thought it'd have a really cool 'glowstick' errrr...glow. 😆 Shame! Can i recommend putting led lights inside, and using non-transparent tarps? Maybe sleep on the mat on the den floor to increase headroom? Unless you go up? But would it turn into a Jenga set? 😂

The only MRE I found to be good was ham slice. It had cherry nut cake and sometime dehydrated strawberries. Everything else since has just been made for calories and no taste. US military preaches water hydration more than comfort drinks. There's beverage bases with electrolytes and vitamins, but we're not expected to have a sit and brew up tea or coffee every meal. Some guys would bring a camping kettle for FOBs and whatnot, but starting campfires in the field just isn't something done normally. Not a cultural thing, they just don't want 18-20 year olds burning down the bivouac site or the training area 🤣

  • @Dashierez
    @Dashierez 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

As someone who was in the US Army from 98 to 06, I don't know if I recall these MRE's you've shown. Maybe just dressed up for civvy use though. The heater and stuff seems authentic enough.
You were overfilling the water btw...you put the food in before you add water and then set it up somewhere at a 45 degree angle or a bit less to cook. It's not that bad to overfill...but it doesn't heat up the same or as well if there's too much water...so with some packs it won't cook right.
You should look up the ranger cookie recipe you make from the MRE drink pouch and give that a try. I never got around to it myself, but it's supposedly an experience.

@TAOutdoors, Lots of the 'glow-in-the-dark' types of products need to be exposed to sunlight, or bright lights, for a period of time to really set the glow effect in motion. You didn't really have a long exposure in the light. Lay them out in the sun all day before bringing them to the site, might make a huge difference.

You should have brought a uv bar light with you, then you shine it all around the structure real quick (shouldn't take much)- that's when it glows but it doesn't last long or get very bright from just regular fire/torch light and it gets dark when the sun goes down so slowly that you never really get the effect from normal sunlight. Still neat though!

You would need to leave the parts out in the light for longer to "charge" them.
I would suggest a geodesic but you'd have to have some different length poles, if the ball angles allow for triangles. Some longer poles for angles and rigidity would be beneficial for the kit as a general improvement to give kids more options.
Could you recommend an alternative to the bed as one tigis don't seem to be doing them anymore?

Hello Mike. Fun video, mate. Question, can you use that onetigris cot without the leg pieces? I thought you could. It would make it much lower to the ground.

Does the British military still do the French onion soup military ration pack and the big party biscuit ? They used to be my favourite ones back when I was in army cadets years ago

Are ticks a problem there? I'm almost paranoid after finding one crawling up my leg during a walk in the woods

I decided to build one of those forts for my kids without reading the instructions and I spent an hour trying to figure out why the tube's weren't fitting in the balls correctly and having to go through them all and fix them to the correct position. Never again!

Interesting. However I enjoy your improvements on the campsite on your property more. You haven't done anything there in quite awhile.

My favorite mre is the meatball and marinara, if you try that one heat up the cheese and mix it with the meatballs. Another good one is the chicken fajitas. The US ones lol

I have the same pad, and after only a few uses, it is already going down after a few hours. I've never over inflated and only used on a ground sheet to keep it from being punctured. It is a shame as this pad is very comfortable untill it deflates.

Just to let you know…you don’t HAVE to use the legs with your cot….it IS designed to be used as a low sitting, or a regular height cot

Hows that cot working out for ya? Had one similar but shattered a leg by leaning to the side while on it, think I may be a little heavier than you though unless you are somehow more than 220.

Just a thought regarding the connections balls: wouldn't it be better to add more holes for example in those areas where there is plenty of room so you have more "void" to be utilised and less material to fill the void resulting in a probably smaller amount of material used ? 😅
