Sorry, e39 m5 fans... I think the m340i is sort of a better e39 m5.

  • I drive my m340i back to back with an e39 m5.
    On one hand, I think that we haven't made much progress in 20 years. On the other hand, as long as you can think of the 3-series as a 5 series from 20 years ago, it kind of works.
    Sure, the e39m5 gives a pretty special experience with its high revving amazing sounding v8 with the manual transmission... but there aren't many cases except for cars and coffee that I'd rather have one.

    Good stuff man, really enjoying the commentary and insights you provide. Setting aside the production values(which usually comes with resources/experience), your content is really good!

    Nothing wrong with your perspective at all and I agree actually. I have owned and driven several older BMWs and the steering feel, in particular, is wildly exaggerated. The engines were definitely amazing and I liked the accessible levels of mechanical grip

    I think the E60 M5 and E90 M3 are also cars with individual throttle bodies, though I'm not sure if modern m cars still have them

    • @KitsCars
      @KitsCars  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, the e90 had them too, and technically so did the e28 m5 and e34 m5. Modern m cars don't need them because of the turbos :(

      @@KitsCars great video by the way, like the comparison
      How would the E60 M5 compare to the 340i and e39 M5 in your opinion

    • @KitsCars

      Hmmm I had an e60m5. The SMG transmission is not ideal in a big car, it felt like someone was hitting you in the back of the head with a table tennis racquet every time you shifted. Other than that, fantastic car. Definitely felt bigger - you didn't get the tossability of the m340i or even the e39 m5. Steering was better but they weren't all that fun on a twisty road. Great highway cars and the motor sounded amazing

    The first car u reviewed is how a BMW should sound like. The second car is for girls and elder people.

    m5 sounds better, has a much better response, the materials are more solid, the view from behind the steering wheel ...

    • @KitsCars
      @KitsCars  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't disagree about it sounding better! Throttle response is better but it has way less low end... the materials are hard to judge given age but the g20's dash materials are nicer. The view yeah subjective but the e39 looks great for its age and the g20 only looks good because the g80 is so ugly :)

    Better at weighing half a tonne more lmao also lets not forget that at the launch the G20 had a very noticeable deadspot on the steering which is unacceptable for a car that presents itself as "sporty" in 2019 - especially the ones with a fake M badge like the m340i

    • @KitsCars
      @KitsCars  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha. I didn't know about the deadspot, the G20 LCI I have has no deadspot but very little steering feel. I prefer the steering in the m340i over the e39 M5, but neither are fantastic. :). But yeah, if my car had a dead spot I'd be pretty unhappy about that.

      Well other than driving them back to back and finding the m340i better in every way, except sound... beats me :). The e39 m5 was awesome in its day but it's a 20 year old car - I'm glad things have progressed. And it lacks a lot of the charm older cars have (steering feel, lightness, simplicity). Anyone who disagrees is romanticizing or hasn't driven anything modern

    • @bmwm6cabrio06
      @bmwm6cabrio06 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KitsCars I've driven plenty modern stuff, that's exactly why i know for a fact that the e39 M is the pinnacle of a sports sedan. You're probably one of those types who goes with the mainstream. Simplicity? In a modern day BMW? Now I know you're trippin' 🤣🤣

    • @KitsCars
      @KitsCars  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The e39 m5 was the pinnacle in its day. I've owned an e36 m3, 2 e46s, 7 e9x m3s, 3 f8x m3/4s and an f87 m2 comp, as well as an f91 m8... i have a pretty good sense of comparison and I like modern cars better.
      That's not to say you do, I have a bunch of friends who love their older cars - I just don't love the e39m5. The steering is really what makes it feel bulky and hard to place for me - the recirculating ball steering was a huge mistake - no other m5 has been cursed with it

      @@bmwm6cabrio06 I dunno man, I have one and I feel like people are overexaggerating. It's a great car, but far from perfect. And the guy in the video makes a big deal out of something which isn't really a big of an issue. Sure, it's not a small car and it weighs 1.8 tons, but it's not huge like modern cars and for the love of God, who buys a 5 series for track racing? You just have to know the car and its limits, it takes practice but the steering isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. Aside from the 340 being ugly as s**t and not having the beautiful V8 sound, I don't really get the point of this video... Do you?
