    Bringing prince into the mix definitely changed things, that was so interesting to watch. Almost like it gave them the same hardship to bond over. Not sure about the protecting his brother thing tho, it’s possible but it looked more like he just got a little tripped out over the excitement of the 2 playing to me.

    I see it as Keba protected his brother. 10 y ago I had a female American Bulldog she was called the 'police' among owners in the flock 20 dogs daily meet up. those who messed or was rough to anyone, she literally rolled them out the the flock even away from their owner to. All the other dogs always seeking her as their protective mother. She opened my eyes to dogs communication and behaviour. She was amazing, just like Prince.

    A mix of both. Cattle dogs are known to "cheap shot" from behind. Also seemed like instinctive herding/mediating behaviour, typical for a cattle dog as well trying to tone down the energy. Prince raised the arousal level, encroached in his space, being insecure he didn't like that plus being restricted/frustrated on leash/muzzle, might have been resource guarding of his brother, not so much "protection" more "jerky" in an insecure/unsure way...funny though, Prince can bring some comic relief, maybe lightening the mood a bit, setting a better tone for the brothers to bond again. Nice correction Allison! Lol

      As an ACD owner for 13 years. I have had “hard” herding dogs for 6 decades. ACDs are NOT for everyone. Period. They were bred to deal with WILD cattle. They won’t back down( Thank goodness for me) M boy saved my life while losing his. I have had an ACD who wants my dog yet, put his body in between a rattlesnake before he was my dog. He made it 2/10ths mile down the road before I could walk down the stairs.
      At 8 yo he jumped my fence to grab a tweaker trying to pull me in a truck. They are very picky about who they like. They have incredible long memories.
      You may not believe this, I have a rare poultry farm and they are the protectors of my free range poultry.They will jump into 400 pounds of Tom turkeys quarreling, and “pet” sit bantam chicks. They alert me to doves that fall from trees.
      They have taken on rogue Great Pyrenees who didn’t get the message they were LGDs.
      People see my dogs from the road and are so impressed with a peacock laying next to them.
      I will talk 99.9% of people out of getting these dogs.
      They live to please their owners, but I personally wouldn’t do same litter of pups.

    I have cattle dog litter mates, but they’re sisters. They go through phases where they’re annoyed with each other. Making sure to give them alone time with you is so important! It’s like having two kids. Imagine ALWAYS having to spend time with your mom WITH your sibling. I’d wanna fight nonstop too

    • @Christopher-vf6kx
      @Christopher-vf6kx ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great analogy. Have boy/girl sibling austrailian shepherds and the same is true. They each have their individual safe place they go to themselves now to chill and it makes all the difference in the family. Boy watches out for and kindly, via body position or chest bumping, protects the girl when she indicates stress in mixed dog situations though.

      @@Christopher-vf6kx thanks! I learned this idea from Stonnie Davis. It totally made sense. I have two daughters (10 and 8) and they start acting out if I don’t give them one on one. Why would it be any different with the two dogs?! My only gripe is taking both out on walks together. One bullies the other one and picks fights with her. if we go to the dog beach, they feed off each other and tag team herding dogs. I just kinda gave up being out in public with both for the moment. 😮‍💨

    • @Christopher-vf6kx
      @Christopher-vf6kx ปีที่แล้ว

      @Austyn. I get it. My 12 yr old daughter trains one when I train the other independently. It took about a year honestly until I can walk them in heal on both sides without them bouncing each other. We control when they can roughhouse at home, how they are able to, and make sure the rules still apply even when outside. The break command is important, without it, they need to be paying attention to the person holding the leash. With fair breaks for them to be dogs and do dog things during the walks. We are also just weaning each off the sprengers rather easily (which we needed with them from 9mo-14mo because their thick double fur made communication with a flat collar almost impossible for them to understand)...at 1y they are 70lbs and 60lbs each, yet my 8yr old can keep one or the other in a tight heal without issues.

    • @austyn5004
      @austyn5004 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@broragnarok146 the family dynamics in a pack of wolves and dogs is the same as humans. You have the alpha female and male (mom and dad) and then the rest of the pack (their pups). Wolves were easily domesticated because of the similarities of pack/family dynamics. So anthropomorphizing your relationship with your dog makes sense. On top of that, anyone who has raised kids and puppies at the same time can easily see the similarities.

    I think the 2nd dog got excited with all the fun watching Prince & his bro & actually wanted to join. The growl almost happened as soon as he was whiplashed backwards when he reached the end of the leash; so it seemed like a instinctual frustration - like why do they get to interact & I get yanked back (because he was on leash). I think you both could’ve dropped the leashes right when Prince & the bro simultaneously bounced down into a play bow. That was a game changing moment 🙌🏽
    Secondly - looks like these dogs started getting along once an authoritative dog handler (Joel) took over. Says a lot about how things are handled back home w the owners. Likely very little structure, calmness, rules etc. That’s when dogs get out of hand & attack one another. Hopefully the owners make the right changes at home to keep the peace & harmony back home 😊

  • @Chasenhaws
    @Chasenhaws ปีที่แล้ว +6

    So, I went back and watched Keba's little charge at Prince like 10 different times. To me, it looked like Keba was protecting his brother. You see Prince and the brother (can't remember his name) play bow, but then the brother gets a little frightened, a little unsure and quickly backs up in a lowered, submissive position. He ends up right beside Keba. When this happens, Keba starts smelling his brother. Prince runs up to the brother to keep trying to play, but he's positioned over him. He backs off just a smidge, then takes a couple steps back towards the brother, which positions him right over him again. This is when Keba goes at him. Keba was kind of interested in what they were doing at first, but then his brother became unsure and tried to back off. I think, to Keba, it just registered that his brother was uncomfortable so he stepped in. Also, many ACDs are very big on "keeping the order". Anytime a commotion starts, they see it as their job to step in and shut it down. I think this could have played a part too.
    Also, this is definitely my favorite video so far....just because 2 Cattle Dogs, am I right?!

    • @RubixCubed81
      @RubixCubed81 ปีที่แล้ว

      The two additional things I noticed were that Prince jumps back prior to Kebo lunging at him and the leash on the brother also being in Kebo’s way, not sure how much that impacted the lunge.

    • @Chasenhaws
      @Chasenhaws ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RubixCubed81 I also noticed, though, that Kebo growled before he lunged. Joel questioned whether the lunge was to protect the brother or whether it was the same herding type instinct that the brother showed in the first video. That growl is another reason why I think it was a protection thing. Most cattle dogs don't growl before they nip while herding. It's a very instinctual thing for them. They see something running and their bodies just react before they even have a chance to think about what they're doing. A growl, on the other hand, is a warning, which goes against the instinctual nature of a herding nip.

    I watched it on super slow a few times and its actually 50/50, but what I deciphered was that Keba was puzzled by the situation, keba got close to his brother as if to assess the situation, you could see a little stand off between all three, one relationship was friendly but to Keba, it seemed like he didn't know if it was friendly or not, its this unfamiliar dog getting very close to them. So either it was Keba being defensive, like yeah, this is my brother, could have been some biological response, or it could have been fear based entirely for his own protection, thinking that the situation was worse than it was (OR, it could just be him not knowing how to act around another dog in that situation) the interesting thing though was Keba's head inspecting the situation, getting close to his brother's face, and investigating what was happening, instead of reverting back to hiding and keeping distance, there was a moment of "are you okay?"/ "Are we okay right now?" Unsure of what play is with another dog

As the owner of a “formerly reactive” Aussie, I’m always interested in learning about other methods and how successful they are in the long term. I think Keeber was protecting his brother. They were previously bonded from birth and slowly that bond was being built again. Just like an owner is seen as a resource by a dog, I think in Keeber's head, that resourceful friendship of their early days, was coming back in his mind. If you notice the sniff of Keeber on his brother, that was important I think in the attack. With Prince being over the top of the head and neck of his brother, that sniff (And maybe also, a lack of understanding of this 'dog play'?'), reinforced this resource reminder and Keeber decided to guard this resource. (Edit: Just to add, he may have just been jealous? 😆).
    I could be wrong, but if Keeber was not sniffing his brother and was half a foot back, he may not have attacked? Great video Beckman, so interesting.

      Cattle dogs are the toughest breed I have ever worked with, but, one good thing is, once you have dealt with a cattle dog, there really aren't many other breeds that you can't handle! (At least I keep telling myself that, I swear the dog distribution system better send me a sweet little basset hound next round!) I'm glad I went with Joel's methods' too! They are like magic for stubborn cra-cra dogs! I equate Joel's methods to boot camps for Marine's, some dogs just thrive under this structure and are the better for the "no-nonsense drill srgt vibe". I always remind myself: Drill srgt's are tough on their recruits, because they want them to be safe in the long run, a little bit of sweat now, means less "red stuff" later. It's just as perilous for these more "difficult" dogs, if there weren't trainers like Joel, I know for a fact that it would not end well for a lot of dogs. His methods work, we are the poorer for not all trainers being well rounded in multiple pedagogies. Not all dogs are the same, not all people are the same. I wouldn't expect a super sensitive easy going sweetie to thrive in the marines, and I wouldn't expect a high energy extrovert warrior type to flourish as a preschool teacher, therefore, I think all trainers should have his methods at their fingertips to be part of their tool-kit, depending on the doggo (or demon mutt in my case) :P they are working with!

    It did look like he was being protective to me, Prince had JUST started playing with his brother, he smells his brother's ear (who was still a lil unsure) and Prince was RIGHT there still being very forward. He wasn't even looking at Prince until he lunged at him.

    I've just found your video training sessions. We have adopted to rescue chihuahuas. They are sisters and 8 yrs old. We are presuming they were used as breeding dogs. OUR vet has said they've had litters for sure. Before we adopted them they had mammary tumors and were just desexed. They still had sutures in.
    We were told they got on well with other dogs and cats.
    Well when they get agitated (other dogs or strangers) they severely attack each other! I think the mussels are a great idea. One girl actually has bitten a gentleman on his ankle. Just because he was there and she was agitated with a person walking by. I'll be watching more videos and trying to use some of your strategies. They haven't had much training. They're still happy to pee in the house. We're working on that at the moment. We adored them and want to help them be more calm and friendly.

    Had to pause this video just to comment! This is absolute gold! I own a cattle dog mix and those subtle tense stares are the signals he does. He made me a better handler and I can read sketchy dogs better because of him. He doesn’t even growl. Just tension and all in the eyes. I knew exactly when the cattle dog was gonna strike Prince. Trainers should see this video and reactive dog owners. So educational to see this body language. Cattle dogs man, they just ain’t about other dogs. The majority of them seem to have issues with dogs and I joke it’s in their DNA to bite twice, once as a dog and second as a cattle dog.
    Thank you for sharing these videos! I love it! I’m a dog trainer and love learning from everyone but love your approach of using your helper dog. I hope to raise a great helper dog to assist dogs like this. Some great helper dogs helped my reactive dog but he still requires management. My new dog isn’t as confident or bold so I can’t put her in a situation with dogs like this. So I’ll just use her for the super nervous or fearful but none bitey dogs. Not all dogs have the confidence and ability to bounce back like Prince, you picked and raised an excellent dog!

    This is a good example of how heelers need strong leader/trainer at home. They also need lots of positive reinforcement to build their confidence and relationship with you, which was not illustrated here. You can't just steam roll them and end up with a well balanced dog.

      So true, had what we believe was an acd/shepherd mix and she was quiet and intentional. Needed firm yet fair direction on not what to do when young and lessening positive reinforcement and snuggles as she got older and her confidence was solid. Kind and focused yet never really submissive/reactive to anything. Greatest dog I personally have ever seen. :)

    Forget to say, the lunge towards Prince at the end looked like protection but equally looked like a continuation from their last meeting, very hard to tell but he looked like he was more stand offish with his brother than Prince so maybe it was protection or maybe even jealousy!!

    I think Keba was annoyed by the play running into him and he decided it was Prince's fault. I've had dogs that didn't like high energy play, especially in their space. Prince loves to play, even rough, and I feel like Keba doesn't like it. Keba needs to learn he isn't in charge of the energy in the area and needs to be less reactive if it gets close. I'm wondering if at some point Keba's brother gets to high energy there will be a fight.

  • @K8-BB8

    Love it! This is a total "my brother, only I can beat him up" moment. Keba smelled Choji on the neck to check to see if he was hurt. When Keba saw the "whale eye" of his brother, I saw the change in Keba. Keba stood up straight up and looked Prince right in the eye. "I'm the only one who can take shots at my brother, and the "son of a b" (excuse the pun), is gonna learn today!" Very sweet, and very inspiring, I'm glad they worked on finding their way to rebuilding their relationship and trust! Only Joel could find a happy ending in such a short time!

    The playbow and the shake ( removes stress) are incredible they are making huge progress. But they seem timid around each other, which is probably trauma from their fight. the reason I think and what i could hear from Keba is kinda dominant/boss around his brother who showed submission to Prince which other dogs can take as fear unless socialized with a lot of dogs. If i were to guess Keba has a higher position in the litter than the other one. Keba seems to be avoiding Prince more than the other one, probably because prince is dominant, calm, and a awesome boy!

    Yeah, healers are up there with Malinois. Lot of dog. Need training early, need a lot of it and needs a lot of exercise. More than likely not dogs for everyone. You and Ceasar are among the few that will take something like this on and know what to do. Much respect.
    I think the one going at the end is dominance or something but it's aggression. Not sure it can be fixed. One's over the badness ready to play the other same litter same sex is not. It could be left over apprehension from their little tiff but I remember the owner saying one is more the aggressor and doing the damage.

    • @pyro226

      The dog only turned away after hitting the end of the leash. He didn't leave due to fear. It was avoidance because he realized that he couldn't go further and couldn't get between the two of them. If he had more leash, he would have stayed between them and kept barking. If he was fully off leash, he would have done the same with it turning into a fight if he actually managed to bite Prince. I don't think he would have given chase if given the chance, he would have stayed with his brother at his back until he could circle back to the brother.

    My mate took on two brothers, they were a bit of a nightmare when they were young and a dog trainer didn’t want to take them on because they worked as a pack?
    Now they are older they get along but the one always mounts the other for dominance.Both neutered.☺️

    that was an attack on prince by keeba when price backed away. keeba was watching them play so it wouldn't have been for protection. will be interesting and more apparent when they get off leash, with muzzle on of course.

    took in a puppy and pretty much let my 3-4 yo rottweiler raise it. big mistake. puppy grew up getting pummeled and became a beast. He started all the fights even though it never ended well for him. Rottweiler avoided picking fights with him but once there was a fight i had to physically put myself in both of their faces and took damage too. The rotty dished out nasty damage but once the dog healed up he was up for a rematch. EVery week or a few times a month spread out theyd get into it. THey'd be best buds the rest of the time. We did eventually rehome the young dog even though i was making progress with him. I think it was good because we didn't just give him away at the worst version of himself. He was a little scarred up looking like a pro fighter but on the inside he was a good happy dog.

    I have a dog who will lash out if two dogs are playing right next to her like the one dog did, though mine isn’t really bonded to dogs. She’s more stimulated by the excitement near her and overreacts. These guys are much younger and have known each other their whole life so I’d tend to think It might be protecting the other if a new dog comes into the group.

    replaying the video in .25 speed definitely makes it look like he was protecting his brother. prince was still playing and didn't have his back turned. when prince nudged his head a little too rough brother stepped in and said back off. also you could tell that the brother who was playful was still uncomfortable to a point with prince hovering over him, and maybe the other picked up on it.

      It usually needs to be “fixed” away from the home, and the bond is so strong that it holds even when they get home.
