@@uomo_nel_mirino4705 no. They are literally the same breed. Belgian shepherds are ALL the same breed. The difference is coat type, color, and length. A Belgian mal is short coat, tervuren is long coat, Laekenois is wire coat, and Groenendael is BLACK long coat. They are all supposed to behave like the same dog, have the same body structure, and all have the same purpose. Tervuren are used more for herding, Malinois are used more for police work, but where they originated, they were all used for the same thing, herding. And because we use malinois more for police work, there are different lineages and most are commonly mixed with German shepherd. But a pure line malinois is just a short coated tervuren.
@@marchflowers3304 I know the breed, I'm a Belgian shepherd addict, I'm 31 years old, 25 spent with Belgian shepherds, all my malinois males are van de duvetorre, now I have groenendael, tervueren and malinois who have given birth dozens of puppies, I don't need explanations from wikipedia .. and I can assure you that a Malinois is temperamentally a world apart that no other Belgian shepherd is able to match..How many Belgian Shepherds have you had?

I know simple hikes or walks arent enough for these dogs, and i can't do the types of dog sports to satiate them. Despite that, they will always be in my heart, and they aren't breeds to be taken lightly.
@@marchflowers3304 they are definitely not a breed to be taken lightly,especially the malin.They learn easily, but intelligence has a price.. i think she is not a right owner for a Belgian shepherd, the tervueren can be more "homely" but needs a owner who imposes rules and behaves like an alpha wolf ..but never being bad and kicking like her ,cause they will never forget it..Never..only increases the stress of an already hyperactive dog.. they are "shadow dogs "obsessed with their owner, if you don't involve them in every aspect of your life they start to have problems.. i have collaborated several times with "La Maschera di Ferro" a top breeder in Italy and he also has always repeated to me the peculiarities of the malinois above the other belgian shepherds and he was right... She's a great owner. Her dog actually seems pretty good, but she realizes there is a problem before the problem materializes in a way that makes it hard to get rid of. Great job on everyone involved.

I really hope everyone is listening to this. I have a Staffy, Shepard, Rott mix. She loves rough play with larger dogs. Thrives in it. Once play is over, she is calm and obedient. She has lost her dog aggression after we started play dates with our friends large breeds. If you can exhaust your dog once or twice a week, you will see an immense change in their unwanted behaviors. What a great vid showcasing this!

You have any advice for someone who's dog has bad experiences with other dogs. I'm trying to socialize my dog but he is still showing aggression towards other dogs and I don't know if it's because he's been attacked twice, once by his one and only other dog friend and the second by a Cane Corso. He loves interacting with kids tho for some weird reason adults scare him tho.

This is gonna be a great dog, she recognizes the problem, got help and he's got a good personality and confidence in strange environments, just going through his teens. His owner knows he's a bit nuts and is learning how to handle with it. All of that is a recipe for success, she did a great job bringing her dog here.

This lady is great for loving the dog enough to work at solving the problem. The diagnosis and therapy that Joel provides is 100% for this dog. I know because I followed Joel's advice and it's has made a HUGE difference in my 55 lb 1-year old crazy rescue Doodle. We have 3 or 4 young dog friends and we set up these roughhouse play dates almost daily. We use our spacious open unfenced dog park when other options aren't available. Plus we do training &/or loose leash patrols daily for discipline. Without both of these things, the dog becomes WAY too crazy within just a few days, especially at night when she knows she will have to go to bed w/o exercise. My 65-year old wife is having the best of times with our dog because of Joel's methods. Me too!
Here are MY reasons for why I think this video is particularly great (in no particular order). A combination of : - The visuals and videography are "prettier" or more beautiful than usual (maybe the rain helped in that respect?) - In just 10 minutes, everything, the entire big picture of why this dog is the way he is and what he needs, was made very clear - especially the explanation of how this dog neeeeeeeeds fast twitch muscle fulfillment. - It covers a topic that I think many dog owners struggle with, usually calling it "hyperactivity"...
im constantly impressed with how well trained and well disciplined prince is. almost makes me feel like prince turns into you and is teaching and helping the dog like how you help and teach the owners lol
This is exactly what I needed! Thank you. It is hard to find dogs that care about play as much as my dog. My friend has 5 dogs and not a one cares about him when we meet. They just want to see the humans and search for food. The dog park is a mixed bag. I've tried to setup doggy playdates and no one seems to be serious about it. It's frustrating.

This is the video I've been waiting for - I have a 16 month old male doberman and he is unlike any of my previous dogs. He slams into me as well as my 6 year old female. I hate when he mean-mugs her like that, every time she tries to re-enter the house especially. We now have a 5 month old male pup as well (from our surprise litter), and I can already tell the pup is going to be the dominant one in the house. I know I've got to assert myself as the leader, and this technique is going to be extremely helpful with that. Thank you so much, Joel!
Hi from the UK - popping back from the Podcast Ep#2 . I watched this because I have watched all of your videos since I rescued for the first time (18 months ago), and realised very quickly my methods from owning an English Mastiff and a Labrador (from birth) were not going to cut it with an approx 4 year old that has spent her life in a barn then Kennels. You changed the game for me as an owner and I live with the regrets of not giving my previous dogs the clear communication and developing the unbelievable relationship I have with my rescue dog. Thank you, currently have the podcast on in the background whilst "working".
I can't thank you enough for the collaring/back up method. I have a problematic newer rescue that goes off the rails if she sees another dog or scary human (any male really). I'm taller than this lady, but similar age. My dog has a harness with a handle. I turn her away from "the problem" , grab her by the harness with two hands and walk her backward. The rest of the walk is better than ever, with obedient behavior and no pulling when she gets to the end of her leash.
I have an 18th month old mix breed and I was beginning to get afraid of some of her behaviors and I didn't realize she's in her "terrible two's". This makes so much sense. I see Freddie's behavior in this lady's dog. This video had helped me be more aware that there is still more to do to help my girl transition into adulthood more balanced and better behaved. I'm so glad I stumbled here. I needed this!!!
I got a rescue malinois pup for my rowdy teenage German shepherd mix with hopes that he would leave my senior olde English bulldog alone and they would keep each other occupied allowing me to focus on other things throughout the day. Fortunately, it worked out exactly as planned. They run around and roughhouse for hours every day without bothering the older dog. She is the perfect companion for him and they wear each other out enough to reign in the craziness. For me, it's a lot easier than having to find dogs for him to play with or make extra time to exercise him outside of their regular walks and training.
Why most people insist on buying working breeds and trying to make them a pet is beyond me. It usually the dog that pays the ultimate price in the end.
Reminds me of my Berner between 10 months and 14 months. Great advice Joel! Did the same type of corrections and my boy is now a certified service dog. 6 years later and he still amazes me.

@@shortymcfox2251 my husbands dream dog is a Newfoundland! Lol that and a Leonberger. We have 2 Saint Bernards ( a 5 month old and a 2 year old) and a 10 month old Great Pyrenees. What’s the temperament like with the Saints you’ve had? My Pyr is the sweetest most gentle dog over but my older St is extremely aggressive towards people and dogs that he hasn’t been acclimated to as puppies.
@@ccap3211 All my Saints (my dogs in general) were acclimated from early on to different situations but I kept a close eye on not over stimulating or letting their stressors get too much. Had our dogs in daycare three days a week, half days since they were spayed/neutered and lots of different classes from obedience to eventual therapy dogs and K9 swimming/life saving for the Newfoundland.
I have an 18 week Mini Aussie/Pitbull Mix. I've been taking to her to the dog park almost every day since she was 11 weeks. Because of this, her social acuity, even at her young age, is off the charts compared to most dogs as a result. It's also the only way I've found to truly satiate her energy. Not just the running, but the rolling around on the ground with other pups chewing each other and play biting.
I believe i have thanked you before but incase I hadn’t yet…..thank you😁 currently raising our 9 m.o giant schnauzer and 9 m.o german shepherd and you, standard, ceasar, will, dd, tom davis, robert and a few others have been treasure troves of knowledge. Been preparing for years and years for when we moved out of the city onto a few acres. We finally did and i have over a year off work to just work with the dogs and settle into the new homestead with the kids and our other critters. Walking loose leash 95% of the time no barking or lunging at other dogs anywhere we go(squirrels are still go time for our schnauzer and accidents still happen occasionally when mom comes home from a week+ away for work🤣) pretty darn good basic obedience. Amazing pups and new members of the family all in all❤️ appreciate everything you do man!!!😊
Fantastic advise😊 my german Shepherd is 6 months old, and she stays with my daughter, who also has a dog when I am at work. This has helped my dog with releasing excess energy and socialisation. I have noticed a big difference in her behaviour.
My German shepherd needs a playmate. I feel sorry for her sometimes because I don't really trust the people/dogs at our local dog park. My brothers dogs are pass the playing age so they don't really like her (they think she is annoying) and the 1 dog that was perfect for her moved away. Luckily she is getting better. She used to be like the dog in the video but she has improved so much. I just know she loves other dogs and wants to play but they don't always want to play with her
I love when you said that's the moment you need to speed up she immediately knew what you meant and it put it into action. Not only a sweet awesome lady, but a super smart one too!
love the balance of making sure all the dogs needs get met and then doling out corrections for bad behavior - a lot of acting out in any creature, human and other animals alike, is out of feeling some need isn't met, meeting those needs both helps eliminate 90% of issues and makes sure when you do have to be more severe in corrections that you're doing it to weed out a maladaptive mechanism instead of just teaching your dog that they're not going to be taken care of
I appluad these owners reaching out for help. It's a lot to truely take care of a dog the right way. People try to humanize dogs. Although they understand us, nothing can comapre as another dog who speaks the same language. Prince is the ultimate peacekeeper and embassator of this pet.
Bless this video. Came at the right time. My 7 month old Doberman is already acting like a teenager. I was seriously considering taking her to your place (I’m like 3 hours away lol) but I had a feeling you’d tell me to ramp up the exercise. So that’s what I did. I currently have no dog friends I can set up with but until I do, I try to take her to play in a baseball field nearby. I hold out the hope someone will ask if they can allow their dogs to play with her.

Interesting and informative video - I will definitely try the pushing backwards approach to stopping the jumping with my 2 year old Irish Terrier. I’m curious to know more about your thoughts on the doggy daycare. I try to keep mine to four hours because that’s when the half day rate ends and I don’t often need longer than that. I do take him just for the socialization sometimes as we live rurally with no other dogs close by. He’s not reactive with the dogs there anymore but still is when out on a walk. He is dog selective at the daycare, apparently - if there’s none he likes in that day he will hang out with the employee instead.
Even with the dog being as „annoying“ as he was around minute 2. I am impressed with her handling the dog. And you can tell he loves her to bits. I am sure they are gonna get on super well. ❤

I got a 2 year old rescue GSD who acted like this. It didn't help that he had no consistency (I'm his 5th home). I basically did what you said here. Now he's 3 and MILES better. Also, this lady is really nice and I hope everything works out for her and her pup ❤ I enjoyed this video

I was wondering if you could speak more to why you shouldn't have your dog at doggy daycare for more than 4 hours? Personally, because I work away from home, I opted to sign up my dog for daycare to give him more stimulation and exercise vs crating for a long period or shorter dog walker situation, but it requires that be there for my entire working day (close to 8-9 hours). He does rest while he's there, but I wanted to hear what concerns you held about the subject? Thanks again!
I’d love to know also. I haven’t put mine into doggy daycare yet but have found one that looks amazing. I have a male, desexed, 15mth boxer and he’s desperate for playtime…🤷🏻♀️
We had our little girl too pampered. We got her when she was about 1 year old from a kill shelter before she got done for. She was all bones and no fur. On her recovery process she got too pampered since we felt bad about her and had to struggle with some bad behavior for quite a few years. Retraining her took more time than recovering her.
You asked in the podcast #2. Because I have a teenaged dog. That could have been me. But even though we do 90% positive training, your loose leash method was a game changer. I'm sharing this with several friends with teenaged dogs.
@@BDTraining How does a day in dog daycare look like where you worked in your experince? Here we keep play sessions short and sweet. They have several breaks in their own kennels. We mix things up with hikes, agility, nosework etc. and work on specific problems owners might have with individual dogs. The goal is a cool, calm and confident dog. We also teach the owners. I think we run our daycare a little different.
I thought I would share my experience for people who are struggling to find a solution for exercising their dog. I stopped trusting dog parks after too many frustrating encounters with owners that don't discipline their dogs, so we only go there once in a while when it's not too crowded. But he obviously still needs exercise regularly. I run my dog on a bike outside. We use a bar attachment that attaches to the base of my bike seat & has a short leash attached. It doesn't take very long to fully fatigue him, average about 20min. I run him maybe 2-4 miles max depending on the weather (less distance in hotter weather) and how active he has been and always at least 1-2 days in between runs so his paws can recover. It's important not to overdo it since he's running on concrete. His max pace is my leisurely pace on a bike - so this can easily be accomplished at all fitness levels. I take breaks every lap or two around the block to let him drink water and have a short rest. I would only do this if you have an area you can access where it's off any main roads and isn't heavily trafficked, like a quiet cul de sac or bike trail.

I'm glad to see some of the techniques for physically communicating with the dogs that I use. I was cussed out by some people in town because they thought I was kicking my dog when I was using the soft of my calf to guide his direction, and my knee to move him away from my knee. My younger Germanees/Shepnees is a jumper and I always have to use my knees to keep him from jumping. I try to teach them they have to stay at dog level
I’m a senior also. My 2.9 yr old Shepherd does same. So much anxiety. It’s not safe to let her play with other dogs, barks aggressively and pulls, was v asked to leave dog park, she shows lots of reactivity . She is taken out for long walks but it’s not enough to burn energy. I know I need to educate myself so I can work with my baby.
We love our daily rough play outside! And even though we have three dogs of our own, we still have a few great dog friends we are meeting for playdates. I love to focus my walk-training on the days they had a VERY good play. We still struggle with going on walks with all three together, but when the energy is drained it's way easier for them to succeed. Ofc I give them a few hours of sleep in between!
This helped me being a retiree and owning an adolescent med/large dog. We have no dogs to have ours rough house with. Can you discuss other ways to get that energy out that doesn’t include others? I have used techniques I know having been a lifetime dog owner and long walks, but I’m sure you have ones that more effective.
I think this would've been a perfect case for better obedience. Starting with Heels and being able to tell your dog off at some point is gonna be the best tool for this lady.
My dog isn't even 5% problematic than dogs you show on your chanell but i'm 100% sure your methods are accurate. My dog is 1yo and whole year was only treats, toys and positive methods. He learned a lot, he know what i expect him to do in different situations but he still lack discipline in some circumstances. From now I'm going to change it a litttle bit and I believe we get great results. Thanks
Cool looking dog. Looks like a Keeshond mix. Keeshonds are known for how headstrong and mouthy they can be. They do calm down eventually though. I know this because I have a 7 month old purebreed Kees and he's quite a handful.
Idk what some people are on...she loves her dog and wants to be able to handle it for as long as she can, and the dog clearly loves her. Should she have gotten a different breed? Who cares? Live your own life and love your own animals. Stop trying to be a online dog trainer for people that dont even know you exist.

I have a 6 year old rescue border collie that we adopted last August. She is great EXCEPT she goes absolutely NUTS around other dogs. Great with kids and CATS, but loses her ever loving mind when she sees dogs. We have her in a “reactive rover” class, but it isn’t having the impact we were hoping for. It makes it so hard to take her places. We have quit doing a lot of the things we love because she can’t go. It is so hard.
@@hicknopunk Been working on that. If I whistle she barks and runs to me 100% of the time, UNLESS she sees another dog. I implemented the come call just as he says. It is like a Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde when she sees another dog. She instantly becomes overstimulated and pants like she ran a mile and has the joker grin from Batman. She has two dogs that she is has been around a ton, and she acts normal, but every NEW dog… it is like a flip is switched… even her eyes change and get bigger. I don’t know if it is about finding more dogs for her to be comfortable with, but it’s hard. If we take her to a dog park to be around other dogs, even at a long distance (100 yards away or more). she starts spinning around and whining and losing her mind. She even assumes toddlers or bags are dogs and loses it until they get close enough that she can tell they aren’t a dog.
The basics of any dog ownership is that you want your dog asking you permission for absolutely everything possible. Especially in public. Their mental image of being a good doog should be rooted in asking you for permission, not in being sweet and playful.
I work at a doggy day care and see TONS of behavior problems when parents bring pups too often. I’m curious about your comment about no more than 4 hours. I agree 100% just curious how many days a week you recommend so I can recommend properly to dog owners. Different breeds will obviously have a sliding scale but any recommendation or general rule of thumb I would appreciate!
Oop never mind lol, I just watched the second podcast video and my question is answered! My pup comes with me to work (I have 2 dogs one comes with, and one stays at home) I have 2 cattle dogs and now that my younger pup is older (just over 2 years old) I will start leaving him at home some because he is telling me he doesn’t want to do the group play 4-5 times a week for 6 hours. We try to tell parents we are seeing XYZ behavior from your pup and they are telling us they don’t want to do this anymore…could be they don’t want to do it at all, or could be they are coming too much and they are overstimulated. Listen to what your dog is telling you. Trust the people “watching” your dog all day or with them with other dogs when they say your dog is overstimulated or doesn’t want to do the all day play or large group play. Joel you are amazing and I appreciate everything you do! I learn something new every video and am grateful for it!
I have an 18-month-old Belgian Tervuren who can act out in very similar ways to this one. We keep the "fast-twitch" energy mostly at bay with ball and frisbee fetch sessions, long sniff walks, off-leash exploring walks, agility class and agility work at home, nose work classes, etc. Unfortunately, he is also dog reactive, so playing with other dogs just isn't possible right now. There are no trainers anywhere on the Big Island with helper dogs who could help us work through that issue. The mouthiness is also a challenge, although with patience and calm redirection that is slowly getting better. Any ideas about how to introduce him to playing with another dog, in the absence of a helper dog and a knowledgable trainer assisting the process?
I use a chuck-it to throw a tennis ball for my pup daily. She runs back and forth till she's had enough. I find this is safer than a dog park, have seen too many irresponsible owners with untrained and aggressive dogs.
I thought you were serious about the 5 miles! Lol. We just got our first pet a few months ago. She will be 6months old soon. She jumps up when we come home. I try to crate her when anyone comes home but it's not always possible. I want to not have to crate her and teach her to not jump when someone enters the house. Is it OK for her to jump up during play time and rough housing time? Is it OK for us to rough house with her because she doesn't have any other dogs to play with.

Yes, playing and running! I have a Cane Corso about the same age, she's excellent with all dogs and we go to a park where we know people & there's never a crowd of dogs. If she doesn't get to run and play, she is a pain in the butt and wants attention all the time. I work with her on good behaviour & respect in the house all the time. This seems to have really improved her behaviour and obedience outside the house, but not enough. She loves training: we take 10 mins 3 or 4 times a day to train, and we play a lot. She's gentle on loose leash until she sees a human friend or is scared and then I can't pit my puny strength against her as I have been hurt a couple times trying to do this. I'm going to have to use a tool to even up the strength for those times - DESPITE THE BECKMAN DOCTRINE (I've tried a gentle leader). Hopefully then she won't be able to take off so easily during those times. EXCEPT for these occasions she's been the best, smartest dog I've ever had, and I now love the breed. But I really need to fix this to keep things safe. Prince is a fantastic dog.
Hi Joel. I was in a park Thursday with my trainer and my next month 18 month old golden who we are training to be a therapy dog. . We are working on leash walking And paying attention amongst other things. We had a man come up to us and lecture my trainer And trying to force my dog to let him pet her We were using a circle walking path. Each time he said something to us with one time trying to force his daughter to pet my dog . I have promised myself I will not let this happen again to either my trainer or dog. Elsie can be shy with some people

@@marchflowers3304 they are definitely not a breed to be taken lightly,especially the malin.They learn easily, but intelligence has a price.. i think she is not a right owner for a Belgian shepherd, the tervueren can be more "homely" but needs a owner who imposes rules and behaves like an alpha wolf ..but never being bad and kicking like her ,cause they will never forget it..Never..only increases the stress of an already hyperactive dog.. they are "shadow dogs "obsessed with their owner, if you don't involve them in every aspect of your life they start to have problems.. i have collaborated several times with "La Maschera di Ferro" a top breeder in Italy and he also has always repeated to me the peculiarities of the malinois above the other belgian shepherds and he was right... She's a great owner. Her dog actually seems pretty good, but she realizes there is a problem before the problem materializes in a way that makes it hard to get rid of. Great job on everyone involved.

I really hope everyone is listening to this. I have a Staffy, Shepard, Rott mix. She loves rough play with larger dogs. Thrives in it. Once play is over, she is calm and obedient. She has lost her dog aggression after we started play dates with our friends large breeds. If you can exhaust your dog once or twice a week, you will see an immense change in their unwanted behaviors. What a great vid showcasing this!

You have any advice for someone who's dog has bad experiences with other dogs. I'm trying to socialize my dog but he is still showing aggression towards other dogs and I don't know if it's because he's been attacked twice, once by his one and only other dog friend and the second by a Cane Corso. He loves interacting with kids tho for some weird reason adults scare him tho.

This is gonna be a great dog, she recognizes the problem, got help and he's got a good personality and confidence in strange environments, just going through his teens. His owner knows he's a bit nuts and is learning how to handle with it. All of that is a recipe for success, she did a great job bringing her dog here.

I’m addicted to your videos. I’ve been training dogs, parrots, cats, and horses for years and you have way better insight than most trainers out there. You’re doing behavioral work as much as training and it’s so fun to watch and learn.
This was a great vid! I love that you didn't discount an older lady from a quiet culture with a tiny build! You just taught her what she needed to do! Definitely could have extended the dogs playing segment at the end--pure joy to watch especially that bouncy Golden Doodle🐾❤️
This lady is great for loving the dog enough to work at solving the problem. The diagnosis and therapy that Joel provides is 100% for this dog. I know because I followed Joel's advice and it's has made a HUGE difference in my 55 lb 1-year old crazy rescue Doodle. We have 3 or 4 young dog friends and we set up these roughhouse play dates almost daily. We use our spacious open unfenced dog park when other options aren't available. Plus we do training &/or loose leash patrols daily for discipline. Without both of these things, the dog becomes WAY too crazy within just a few days, especially at night when she knows she will have to go to bed w/o exercise. My 65-year old wife is having the best of times with our dog because of Joel's methods. Me too!

Here are MY reasons for why I think this video is particularly great (in no particular order). A combination of :
- The visuals and videography are "prettier" or more beautiful than usual (maybe the rain helped in that respect?)
- In just 10 minutes, everything, the entire big picture of why this dog is the way he is and what he needs, was made very clear - especially the explanation of how this dog neeeeeeeeds fast twitch muscle fulfillment.
- It covers a topic that I think many dog owners struggle with, usually calling it "hyperactivity"...

This is exactly what I needed! Thank you. It is hard to find dogs that care about play as much as my dog. My friend has 5 dogs and not a one cares about him when we meet. They just want to see the humans and search for food. The dog park is a mixed bag. I've tried to setup doggy playdates and no one seems to be serious about it. It's frustrating.

This is the video I've been waiting for - I have a 16 month old male doberman and he is unlike any of my previous dogs. He slams into me as well as my 6 year old female. I hate when he mean-mugs her like that, every time she tries to re-enter the house especially. We now have a 5 month old male pup as well (from our surprise litter), and I can already tell the pup is going to be the dominant one in the house. I know I've got to assert myself as the leader, and this technique is going to be extremely helpful with that. Thank you so much, Joel!
Hi from the UK - popping back from the Podcast Ep#2 . I watched this because I have watched all of your videos since I rescued for the first time (18 months ago), and realised very quickly my methods from owning an English Mastiff and a Labrador (from birth) were not going to cut it with an approx 4 year old that has spent her life in a barn then Kennels. You changed the game for me as an owner and I live with the regrets of not giving my previous dogs the clear communication and developing the unbelievable relationship I have with my rescue dog. Thank you, currently have the podcast on in the background whilst "working".
I can't thank you enough for the collaring/back up method. I have a problematic newer rescue that goes off the rails if she sees another dog or scary human (any male really). I'm taller than this lady, but similar age. My dog has a harness with a handle. I turn her away from "the problem" , grab her by the harness with two hands and walk her backward. The rest of the walk is better than ever, with obedient behavior and no pulling when she gets to the end of her leash.
I have an 18th month old mix breed and I was beginning to get afraid of some of her behaviors and I didn't realize she's in her "terrible two's". This makes so much sense. I see Freddie's behavior in this lady's dog. This video had helped me be more aware that there is still more to do to help my girl transition into adulthood more balanced and better behaved. I'm so glad I stumbled here. I needed this!!!

I got a rescue malinois pup for my rowdy teenage German shepherd mix with hopes that he would leave my senior olde English bulldog alone and they would keep each other occupied allowing me to focus on other things throughout the day. Fortunately, it worked out exactly as planned. They run around and roughhouse for hours every day without bothering the older dog. She is the perfect companion for him and they wear each other out enough to reign in the craziness. For me, it's a lot easier than having to find dogs for him to play with or make extra time to exercise him outside of their regular walks and training.

@@shortymcfox2251 my husbands dream dog is a Newfoundland! Lol that and a Leonberger. We have 2 Saint Bernards ( a 5 month old and a 2 year old) and a 10 month old Great Pyrenees. What’s the temperament like with the Saints you’ve had? My Pyr is the sweetest most gentle dog over but my older St is extremely aggressive towards people and dogs that he hasn’t been acclimated to as puppies.
@@ccap3211 All my Saints (my dogs in general) were acclimated from early on to different situations but I kept a close eye on not over stimulating or letting their stressors get too much. Had our dogs in daycare three days a week, half days since they were spayed/neutered and lots of different classes from obedience to eventual therapy dogs and K9 swimming/life saving for the Newfoundland.

I have an 18 week Mini Aussie/Pitbull Mix. I've been taking to her to the dog park almost every day since she was 11 weeks. Because of this, her social acuity, even at her young age, is off the charts compared to most dogs as a result. It's also the only way I've found to truly satiate her energy. Not just the running, but the rolling around on the ground with other pups chewing each other and play biting.
Ill prrach dog parks to large working dogs everyday! It will change your dog for the better when they can rough house

I believe i have thanked you before but incase I hadn’t yet…..thank you😁 currently raising our 9 m.o giant schnauzer and 9 m.o german shepherd and you, standard, ceasar, will, dd, tom davis, robert and a few others have been treasure troves of knowledge. Been preparing for years and years for when we moved out of the city onto a few acres. We finally did and i have over a year off work to just work with the dogs and settle into the new homestead with the kids and our other critters. Walking loose leash 95% of the time no barking or lunging at other dogs anywhere we go(squirrels are still go time for our schnauzer and accidents still happen occasionally when mom comes home from a week+ away for work🤣) pretty darn good basic obedience. Amazing pups and new members of the family all in all❤️ appreciate everything you do man!!!😊

Fantastic advise😊 my german Shepherd is 6 months old, and she stays with my daughter, who also has a dog when I am at work. This has helped my dog with releasing excess energy and socialisation. I have noticed a big difference in her behaviour.
My German shepherd needs a playmate. I feel sorry for her sometimes because I don't really trust the people/dogs at our local dog park. My brothers dogs are pass the playing age so they don't really like her (they think she is annoying) and the 1 dog that was perfect for her moved away. Luckily she is getting better. She used to be like the dog in the video but she has improved so much. I just know she loves other dogs and wants to play but they don't always want to play with her
I love when you said that's the moment you need to speed up she immediately knew what you meant and it put it into action. Not only a sweet awesome lady, but a super smart one too!
love the balance of making sure all the dogs needs get met and then doling out corrections for bad behavior - a lot of acting out in any creature, human and other animals alike, is out of feeling some need isn't met, meeting those needs both helps eliminate 90% of issues and makes sure when you do have to be more severe in corrections that you're doing it to weed out a maladaptive mechanism instead of just teaching your dog that they're not going to be taken care of
I appluad these owners reaching out for help. It's a lot to truely take care of a dog the right way. People try to humanize dogs. Although they understand us, nothing can comapre as another dog who speaks the same language. Prince is the ultimate peacekeeper and embassator of this pet.

I was seriously considering taking her to your place (I’m like 3 hours away lol) but I had a feeling you’d tell me to ramp up the exercise. So that’s what I did. I currently have no dog friends I can set up with but until I do, I try to take her to play in a baseball field nearby. I hold out the hope someone will ask if they can allow their dogs to play with her.
Go to a dog park by yourself, spot high energy dogs with owners who know how to handle them. Ask them if they're up for a play session.

Interesting and informative video - I will definitely try the pushing backwards approach to stopping the jumping with my 2 year old Irish Terrier. I’m curious to know more about your thoughts on the doggy daycare. I try to keep mine to four hours because that’s when the half day rate ends and I don’t often need longer than that. I do take him just for the socialization sometimes as we live rurally with no other dogs close by. He’s not reactive with the dogs there anymore but still is when out on a walk. He is dog selective at the daycare, apparently - if there’s none he likes in that day he will hang out with the employee instead.
My dog is the same way! Totally fine with the dogs at daycare or at a dog beach, but very reactive when on leash.
Knew from the first jump today MOM was the one who needed training, sometimes we need permission to be the ONE! 👍😎

I was wondering if you could speak more to why you shouldn't have your dog at doggy daycare for more than 4 hours? Personally, because I work away from home, I opted to sign up my dog for daycare to give him more stimulation and exercise vs crating for a long period or shorter dog walker situation, but it requires that be there for my entire working day (close to 8-9 hours). He does rest while he's there, but I wanted to hear what concerns you held about the subject?

We had our little girl too pampered. We got her when she was about 1 year old from a kill shelter before she got done for. She was all bones and no fur. On her recovery process she got too pampered since we felt bad about her and had to struggle with some bad behavior for quite a few years. Retraining her took more time than recovering her.
You asked in the podcast #2. Because I have a teenaged dog. That could have been me. But even though we do 90% positive training, your loose leash method was a game changer. I'm sharing this with several friends with teenaged dogs.

@@BDTraining How does a day in dog daycare look like where you worked in your experince? Here we keep play sessions short and sweet. They have several breaks in their own kennels. We mix things up with hikes, agility, nosework etc. and work on specific problems owners might have with individual dogs. The goal is a cool, calm and confident dog. We also teach the owners. I think we run our daycare a little different.

I thought I would share my experience for people who are struggling to find a solution for exercising their dog. I stopped trusting dog parks after too many frustrating encounters with owners that don't discipline their dogs, so we only go there once in a while when it's not too crowded. But he obviously still needs exercise regularly.
I run my dog on a bike outside. We use a bar attachment that attaches to the base of my bike seat & has a short leash attached. It doesn't take very long to fully fatigue him, average about 20min. I run him maybe 2-4 miles max depending on the weather (less distance in hotter weather) and how active he has been and always at least 1-2 days in between runs so his paws can recover. It's important not to overdo it since he's running on concrete. His max pace is my leisurely pace on a bike - so this can easily be accomplished at all fitness levels. I take breaks every lap or two around the block to let him drink water and have a short rest. I would only do this if you have an area you can access where it's off any main roads and isn't heavily trafficked, like a quiet cul de sac or bike trail.

I'm glad to see some of the techniques for physically communicating with the dogs that I use.
I was cussed out by some people in town because they thought I was kicking my dog when I was using the soft of my calf to guide his direction, and my knee to move him away from my knee.
My younger Germanees/Shepnees is a jumper and I always have to use my knees to keep him from jumping.
I try to teach them they have to stay at dog level
My pittie does the same thing with me, I am also a senior, and I am paying lots of attention .😂
I’m a senior also. My 2.9 yr old Shepherd does same. So much anxiety. It’s not safe to let her play with other dogs, barks aggressively and pulls, was v asked to leave dog park, she shows lots of reactivity . She is taken out for long walks but it’s not enough to burn energy. I know I need to educate myself so I can work with my baby.

We love our daily rough play outside! And even though we have three dogs of our own, we still have a few great dog friends we are meeting for playdates. I love to focus my walk-training on the days they had a VERY good play. We still struggle with going on walks with all three together, but when the energy is drained it's way easier for them to succeed. Ofc I give them a few hours of sleep in between!

This helped me being a retiree and owning an adolescent med/large dog. We have no dogs to have ours rough house with. Can you discuss other ways to get that energy out that doesn’t include others? I have used techniques I know having been a lifetime dog owner and long walks, but I’m sure you have ones that more effective.
I think this would've been a perfect case for better obedience. Starting with Heels and being able to tell your dog off at some point is gonna be the best tool for this lady.
My dog isn't even 5% problematic than dogs you show on your chanell but i'm 100% sure your methods are accurate. My dog is 1yo and whole year was only treats, toys and positive methods. He learned a lot, he know what i expect him to do in different situations but he still lack discipline in some circumstances. From now I'm going to change it a litttle bit and I believe we get great results. Thanks
Cool looking dog. Looks like a Keeshond mix. Keeshonds are known for how headstrong and mouthy they can be. They do calm down eventually though. I know this because I have a 7 month old purebreed Kees and he's quite a handful.

Keeshond mix?
I have a 6 year old rescue border collie that we adopted last August. She is great EXCEPT she goes absolutely NUTS around other dogs. Great with kids and CATS, but loses her ever loving mind when she sees dogs. We have her in a “reactive rover” class, but it isn’t having the impact we were hoping for. It makes it so hard to take her places. We have quit doing a lot of the things we love because she can’t go. It is so hard.
My unqualified advice is she needs to respect you. At the very least, if they do that you can call them off every time with one command.
@@hicknopunk Been working on that. If I whistle she barks and runs to me 100% of the time, UNLESS she sees another dog. I implemented the come call just as he says. It is like a Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde when she sees another dog. She instantly becomes overstimulated and pants like she ran a mile and has the joker grin from Batman.
She has two dogs that she is has been around a ton, and she acts normal, but every NEW dog… it is like a flip is switched… even her eyes change and get bigger. I don’t know if it is about finding more dogs for her to be comfortable with, but it’s hard. If we take her to a dog park to be around other dogs, even at a long distance (100 yards away or more). she starts spinning around and whining and losing her mind. She even assumes toddlers or bags are dogs and loses it until they get close enough that she can tell they aren’t a dog.
The basics of any dog ownership is that you want your dog asking you permission for absolutely everything possible. Especially in public. Their mental image of being a good doog should be rooted in asking you for permission, not in being sweet and playful.
I work at a doggy day care and see TONS of behavior problems when parents bring pups too often. I’m curious about your comment about no more than 4 hours. I agree 100% just curious how many days a week you recommend so I can recommend properly to dog owners. Different breeds will obviously have a sliding scale but any recommendation or general rule of thumb I would appreciate!
Oop never mind lol, I just watched the second podcast video and my question is answered! My pup comes with me to work (I have 2 dogs one comes with, and one stays at home) I have 2 cattle dogs and now that my younger pup is older (just over 2 years old) I will start leaving him at home some because he is telling me he doesn’t want to do the group play 4-5 times a week for 6 hours. We try to tell parents we are seeing XYZ behavior from your pup and they are telling us they don’t want to do this anymore…could be they don’t want to do it at all, or could be they are coming too much and they are overstimulated. Listen to what your dog is telling you. Trust the people “watching” your dog all day or with them with other dogs when they say your dog is overstimulated or doesn’t want to do the all day play or large group play. Joel you are amazing and I appreciate everything you do! I learn something new every video and am grateful for it!
I have an 18-month-old Belgian Tervuren who can act out in very similar ways to this one. We keep the "fast-twitch" energy mostly at bay with ball and frisbee fetch sessions, long sniff walks, off-leash exploring walks, agility class and agility work at home, nose work classes, etc. Unfortunately, he is also dog reactive, so playing with other dogs just isn't possible right now. There are no trainers anywhere on the Big Island with helper dogs who could help us work through that issue. The mouthiness is also a challenge, although with patience and calm redirection that is slowly getting better. Any ideas about how to introduce him to playing with another dog, in the absence of a helper dog and a knowledgable trainer assisting the process?

I use a chuck-it to throw a tennis ball for my pup daily. She runs back and forth till she's had enough. I find this is safer than a dog park, have seen too many irresponsible owners with untrained and aggressive dogs.
I thought you were serious about the 5 miles! Lol. We just got our first pet a few months ago. She will be 6months old soon. She jumps up when we come home. I try to crate her when anyone comes home but it's not always possible. I want to not have to crate her and teach her to not jump when someone enters the house. Is it OK for her to jump up during play time and rough housing time? Is it OK for us to rough house with her because she doesn't have any other dogs to play with.

Yes, playing and running! I have a Cane Corso about the same age, she's excellent with all dogs and we go to a park where we know people & there's never a crowd of dogs. If she doesn't get to run and play, she is a pain in the butt and wants attention all the time. I work with her on good behaviour & respect in the house all the time. This seems to have really improved her behaviour and obedience outside the house, but not enough.
She loves training: we take 10 mins 3 or 4 times a day to train, and we play a lot. She's gentle on loose leash until she sees a human friend or is scared and then I can't pit my puny strength against her as I have been hurt a couple times trying to do this. I'm going to have to use a tool to even up the strength for those times - DESPITE THE BECKMAN DOCTRINE (I've tried a gentle leader). Hopefully then she won't be able to take off so easily during those times.
EXCEPT for these occasions she's been the best, smartest dog I've ever had, and I now love the breed. But I really need to fix this to keep things safe.

Hi Joel. I was in a park Thursday with my trainer and my next month 18 month old golden who we are training to be a therapy dog. . We are working on leash walking And paying attention amongst other things. We had a man come up to us and lecture my trainer And trying to force my dog to let him pet her We were using a circle walking path. Each time he said something to us with one time trying to force his daughter to pet my dog . I have promised myself I will not let this happen again to either my trainer or dog. Elsie can be shy with some people

Why do old folks get such huge energetic dogs?
