I personally believe there are certain breeds of dogs that should not be sold/adopted to people who don't meet certain criteria. It would be better for both the humans and the dogs.
Here in Germany the breeder dont give their Malinois away unless you Show that you can handle their high Energy. Like you have to be in an Agility or Mantrailing club or Something Like that. But thats the responsible of the breeder of course
Siberian Huskys must be way up there. People only getting them for their beauty who have no clue how to handle a high energy sled dog and complain about their Husky nature (that many either didn't research or ignored)
Agreed. Certain breeds aren’t for everyone. In the right hands they’re great, but some breeds are more intense than others. They’re not for the faint of heart.

Thanks for all the great content and dog education. Started watching when I began pet sitting a couple years ago as a side hustle and my clients would always be surprised when their pets were returned better behaved than when they were dropped off haha That's all thanks to you! (sorry, no commission fees)
This is a nice dog. He does have the mal fixation, but can be worked with. He generally looked great but you can see the switch in his brain flick when he gets hyper focused on something. It's interesting to see a dog with a good base personality where you have to push them a bit to see what's going to cause them to have a reaction. Much harder to find the problems and address them. Especially enjoyed seeing this dog with the Cane Corso.
I have 2 female Belgian Shepherds. My Malinois is well-behaved, while my Groenendael can be annoying due to her extreme energy drive. She can be a fur missile, too, but only with submissive and anxious dogs. She knows when not to be too demanding, as she has learned from other dogs that this behavior is unacceptable. I love your videos very much; thank you for putting them on TH-cam.
I just got the gentle leader last week. I’ve been using the Halti this entire time and didn’t realize how superior the Gentle leader is! Feel dumb I’ve taken this long to go with the right brand

I had thought i tried everything with my malinois a couple years ago and almost had to rehome...and i went down the rabbit hole many times with training philosophies and dog trainers putting on a show... your videos actually show and explain practical dog training for the real world for free... no gatekeeping no pretentious BS... you simplify the training enough so a normal person that didnt study animals in college can understand...

My dog LOVES to rub his face on me when he has the gentle lead. I never thought about it as "don't rub your face on the boss" till now. Yes he does not always like the gentle lead and it is funny cause I also tell him "Luca I don't care. We are putting this on."
@2:10-2:22 this stuff is pretty damn normal for male dogs that are dominant. Male dog enters, other male dogs like "uh uh, you ain't getting up on me" so he bounces in a circle to eliminate the possibility of it happening. Prince then goes to pee, then the other dog is like "oh he's not trying to stand over me or mount me" and let's it go for a bit. Keep in mind this is a young dog. If left to rehearse these behaviors it WILL get worse.You can't stop nature you can only manage it and tamp it down with training. My dog has done this his whole life, he's not having that, he stands his ground and let's it be known and I watch. If it's going to be a fight I intervene. This was mainly when he was young and now he has the confidence and recall that I can pull him from these situations if needed. If not, I go get him and intervene again. Not because of my dog usually because of the other and it's owner. Dominance is a thing! As far as the fur missile goes, these dogs were bred for certain things and this shows exactly why. They have drive even untrained to do something that is likely a problem for a novice owner. They did good by bringing him to Beckman
Shepherds tend to work from top down in a fight (they have long necks and can arch alot so its just jaws coming down along the neckline) so they can be intimidated by taller dogs. They think a deerhound or great dane can do the same thing they do, so its a good method of teaching by using a dog. Unless they start to learn they can dominate those dogs (prob not the irish deerhound, but def a dane), then u may have a problem... but for linking an out motion with a verbal command it works great.
You are so blessed having all those stable practice dogs! Too many people are scared of Mals, it's hard to find other owners that will allow play, and they really do need it to learn.
Joel catching that malinois is crazy. I did not and would not have seen that coming at all. Also, I want to point out, this malinois is a bully. You can see it at 6:55 not allowing the doodle to pass through, until he decides when? Also at 7:12, that is a very bad behavior. I wish Joel would have caught that at the time. It seems excessive and bullying a doodle that is absolutely not doing anything.
There’s just something about a BM I’m drawn too!! energy, intelligence,agility, manipulation, although they are up there but not for me obvs!! They do make great service dogs though, they need hours of exercise and a job imo!! Great video Joel!! 😊
I have a one year old Malinois chase my 16 months old female GDS on a off leash beach recently, my dog was in stress mode screaming while I told the owner to call his dog but he never did! This is a great video to show those owning Malinois for the first time and must train your dog!
I have a male malinois mix and another shepherd mix (BTW I'm working with a professional trainer in my area) and I agree with Mr. Beckman's observations. One thing I do to keep peace in the household is to discourage a lot of intense running type activiity (when they are together) because of their prey drive

When the Mal slipped, could it be that, in the presence of the ladies, he felt that he had to prove to Prince he still had what it took to physically lead, just in case Prince noticed that slip-up and saw it as a sign of weakness to exploit? Maybe the Mal was over-compensating for the flub!
Holy shi!! I have this exact Malinois, same exact coloring except my model has a lot of graying. I've never seen a Malinois with as close a match on color. Mine's older, age unknown, different problems, rescued from a neglect situation. Holy moly is mine willful. Edit: mine goes missile mode *for sure* (said in Beckman voice.)
This mal is SOO much like mine. Mine is neutered, but other than that, they look nearly identical. Mine is much more docile with other dogs, however. He can be a missile though. It's crazy to see how similar they are.
i have a 3YO intact male Malinois. i have noticed this "sudden turn" they do that Joel mentions at dog parks etc. we are lucky as the parks we have, are more like reserves, 3 empty football ovals, a creek, dams, small access road. even empty / closed golf courses. i think it has a bit to do with everyone being 'stationary" for to long. of course he is moving around, running playing etc. but the owners are generally chit chatting etc. but after a while things start to get tense. maybe they get a little bored? now i try and keep the group moving if there is one, walking and talking stopping every once and a while. when i do this, nothing seems to happen. for your pool area this doesn't work as its to small, but your back paddock, you could do diamonds and figure 8s etc. i dont think this is what happens in this video, but it was getting pretty close. i can see some frustration building before he slips , maybe those few slips upset him a little. you did a pause on the one that happened on your flank but before that on the other side of the pool he also got caught slipping into a 180 spin slide twist thing, then what happened behind you. just some stream of thoughts.
ive been watching all your videos recently, i do doggy day care from my home and have a new rescue, when outside she growls at other dogs with her hackle raised but her tail looks great! im sure her hackle being raised is due to being over stimulated, when i bring any dog inside the home she is amazing with them all!! no growling just tail wags and wanting to play, this confuses me because ive always made any dog meet my clients outside on neutral ground however its the complete opposite with my rescue she is a american bull dog x rottweiler
Not so sure Doodles are paragons of politebess either. It's an odd mix of temperaments, I suspect they have trouble regulating umpulses regarding other dogs too.
How's that meme go? "Malinois - The dumbest smartest dog you'll ever know." Basically their drive & predisposition to amp up conflicts with their super high intelligence and clarity. Clarity is probably the big difference maker in this session. Not every breed can get amped up to that level & clearly understand the sudden correction that followed. That Mal understood what he was being corrected for.
I read somewhere that coyotes will act playful to lure domestic dogs (ie. prey) to their pack who is lying in wait. Maybe this is something similar to the malinois using playfulness as a tool in it's arsenal.
It looked like play behavior to me. Tails and ears still up, hackles down. Some dogs play rough, and it’s hard to get Princes’ attention. Malenois are mouthy also.
I’m so sad Joel and his team never got back to me on training my Mal girl. My Mal needs someone like Joel. She’s dog aggressive but is fine with her husky brothers. I had to go with a local trainer but I was willing to drive 7-8hrs to SD to board my girl with Joel. Hopefully this local trainer with help 🤞🤞🤞
I tried to use a “head halter” AKA (the G.L.) on my standard poodle but he puts on the brakes, stands and grinds his teeth. I’ll drag him to walk, and brakes go on even more and grinds even harder. Any suggestions? He’s dominant, stubborn and leash reactive….3 trainers, I’m managing him, barely.
This Malinois seems a great dog. He has a high energylavel, which is normal at that age, but all in all I find his behaviour not over the top...for a Malinois. I agree 100% with Joel, that they have to meet and interact with other dogs in a controlled environment ( not a dogpark), with a leader that will take control when needed. A young ( between 8 months and 2 years) male Malinois will often be "to much" for a lot of other breeds. My 1 year old German shephard can sometimes show the same behaviour. He has met and I let him meet as many other dogs as possible, Never any agression but I will always correct firm when he gets a bit rough, which he does. But when he meets his sister from time to time, they are on the same energy level and the playing can be rough, but none of the two has the upperhand in the play, and they can go on for a really long time in the garden. They did that since they were pups. Still they really like each other and will behave inside the house when we meet its owners (friends) from time to time. I never ever would consider letting him play on this energy level with just any other dog.
Should the owner of the Malinois shorten up on the leash a little more? Not saying to be too tight, but it might give him more control. Kind of like when your fishing, you dont want too much slack in the line. I hope to take your class one day Joel, I'm just trying to get my self ready to be a good student. I volunteered at the local shelter and am taking a short training class Tuesday. Thanks for these videos, they're inspirational for me and surely others! 🙏😊
Gentle Leaders are the same as flat collars and leashes. Puppies aren't born being totally conditioned and comfortable with wearing a flat collar or being walked on a leash. We've all seen puppies freak out a little the first few times you put a collar around their neck, just like we've all seen them try to hunker down and buck and thrash around when you first start adding a little pressure with the leash. It takes time to teach them what those tools mean and for them to get used to wearing them. Gentle Leaders are no different. The dog will fight against them until you teach them otherwise.
One of the smartest dogs I ever had was such a brat. I had to be a hardass with her and people would feel sorry for her. They would be like " Why are you so mean with her shes a good dog." She was a good dog cause I was stricked. The smarter the animal the more you can't let things slide IMHO.
I'm reticent ro interfere with dogs where there's no physical damage occuring. I feel I'm meddling with their ability to establish a hierarchy - like helicopter parenting. Something I trust dogs to be able to do is sort out pecking order and profit from forming a pack. Had two cats for ten years who just could sort out their 'issues' with each other!
your dogs, your house, your rules. Someone elses dog in someone elses houses, their rules. you may be cool with your dog dom'ing and humping, other people may not be. These dogs get training so they can function in someone elses place. and, no i am not suggesting that your dogs are not behaving, just making a point.
our mid-sized missile (hungarian mudi) hurt himself on the gentle leader :( I believe I conditioned him enough, then took short walks on our street, but the main problem is the 5th house's big GS dog, who is unsocialized & barks from inside the fence, & that's the ONLY house we can not pass without our dog also barking- lungeing-whineing to that fence from OUTSIDE :/ if they are let loose they just run up & down along the fence without barking.. anyway I wanted to use the head halter for this, to walk beside that fence without the misery, but he got "out of his mind" frolicking full force, me trying hold him back, and the gentle leader slightly cut into his muzzle on one side :/ he's great with other dogs outside, on & off leash, in our yard..

What's crazy is my friend has a blue pitty...she can't walk her...vacuum with her around is impossible for HER and the dog doesn't like ANY other dog...with her...I walk her vacuum and do what I want..she respects me but not her owner I tried to teach her and her heart is too far in it
To better word your “bit” on why a dog is attacking; If a dog is attacking other dogs it’s due to a lack of rules, boundaries and limitations. “NO” is the primary way we enforce the aforementioned.
6:05 Well no ish you got two males with two females which means one has to take dominance & claim the females for themselves. Whether it be by play or aggression. It may be the easiest way to get them around dogs but its also the easiest way to force them to be territorial.
Next level like needing an ecollar to ensue they are controlled in an open situation. Still can’t fathom your hate for e-collars overall. They give us so many abilities on the end goal
I haven’t always been clear about what I don’t like about ecollars, so here goes. When a high level shock is administered while a dog is looking at another dog and already doesn’t like the other dog, I’ve seen many many dogs become much worse.

The gaps in those retaining blocks always give me concern about dogs paws getting in them and twisting or something. Gentle leaders are crypotnite to dogs. Did I get that from you? I sometimes use a half hitch with the leash on my dog when she gets rowdy, works just like a gentle leader.
They’re probably police preferred dogs for a reason. Still, a dog is only as good as it’s trained…despite genetics. Every dog can be a sweetheart, but as I’ve said about my newest rescue, “You can’t take the terror, 😅out of a Terrier.” She was bred to kill varmits, I’m not going to discipline her hard for that inbred instinct. My other dogs are large livestock guardians, big doofus boys who only wake up when coyotes are on the property. My little terrier, she gets all upset over squirrels. 😂. She still watches the big boys, and does what they do when they’re out and patrolling.

There's a reason Mals are called "fur missles" and why they are not for 99% of humans. I don't want to get into the whole thing about mals being their owners whole personalities and being cool dogs. They ARE called "fur missles" and "maligators" because of these behaviors.

Can you please do a video on this horrific thing I just saw pop up on my feed- its about this horrible person Tina Frey, her since shut down business Cypress Arrow, and just some horrific abuse she inflicted on dogs there, one being a Cane Corso…. And I saw a comment under it mentioning you & actually went to bat for you 😝 It seems not everyone understands there is a HUGE difference between discipline/corrections/consequences and actual ABUSE. I was saying Im SURE you would not condone that kind of treatment not just bc its abusive but bc its not productive or effective and it could lead to a dog becoming fearful/reactive/aggressive and hurting someone, especially a powerful dog like a Cane Corso. I was truly horrified by what I saw. She had this dog cross tied, they were choking it, while she was whipping it in the face! The poor thing!!!! She did face some charges & im not sure what ended up happening with it…. It made me SO mad… if only she could be taken out back and….. Im not allowed to say that so I’ll stop there but you can probably guess where I was going…. 😐🫢 There’s a special place in hell for people like Tina Frey 🤦♀️

The gentle leader is the key tool! Transformed my 6mo Rhodesian Ridgeback from a raging bronco to a showdog. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Joel!

Instead of instinctively catching a flying ball like most sports, Joel catches flying dogs. 😆

the thing about malinois is that they can go from zero to jerk in the blink of an eye.
I have 4 Malinois, would not let them play with just any other dog, they play too rough for most other dogs.

This mal is SOO much like mine. Mine is neutered, but other than that, they look nearly identical. Mine is much more docile with other dogs, however. He can be a missile though. It's crazy to see how similar they are.

i have a 3YO intact male Malinois.
i have noticed this "sudden turn" they do that Joel mentions at dog parks etc.
we are lucky as the parks we have, are more like reserves, 3 empty football ovals, a creek, dams, small access road. even empty / closed golf courses.
i think it has a bit to do with everyone being 'stationary" for to long.
of course he is moving around, running playing etc. but the owners are generally chit chatting etc.
but after a while things start to get tense. maybe they get a little bored?
now i try and keep the group moving if there is one, walking and talking stopping every once and a while.
when i do this, nothing seems to happen.
for your pool area this doesn't work as its to small, but your back paddock, you could do diamonds and figure 8s etc.
i dont think this is what happens in this video, but it was getting pretty close. i can see some frustration building before he slips , maybe those few slips upset him a little.

ive been watching all your videos recently, i do doggy day care from my home and have a new rescue, when outside she growls at other dogs with her hackle raised but her tail looks great! im sure her hackle being raised is due to being over stimulated, when i bring any dog inside the home she is amazing with them all!! no growling just tail wags and wanting to play, this confuses me because ive always made any dog meet my clients outside on neutral ground however its the complete opposite with my rescue she is a american bull dog x rottweiler
Not so sure Doodles are paragons of politebess either. It's an odd mix of temperaments, I suspect they have trouble regulating umpulses regarding other dogs too.
That's because doodles aren't a breed, it's a glorified mutt, you have no clue what genetic roulette you get. There is no standard for them.🤷🏽♀️
How's that meme go? "Malinois - The dumbest smartest dog you'll ever know." Basically their drive & predisposition to amp up conflicts with their super high intelligence and clarity. Clarity is probably the big difference maker in this session. Not every breed can get amped up to that level & clearly understand the sudden correction that followed. That Mal understood what he was being corrected for.

I read somewhere that coyotes will act playful to lure domestic dogs (ie. prey) to their pack who is lying in wait. Maybe this is something similar to the malinois using playfulness as a tool in it's arsenal.
It looked like play behavior to me. Tails and ears still up, hackles down. Some dogs play rough, and it’s hard to get Princes’ attention. Malenois are mouthy also.

I’m so sad Joel and his team never got back to me on training my Mal girl. My Mal needs someone like Joel. She’s dog aggressive but is fine with her husky brothers. I had to go with a local trainer but I was willing to drive 7-8hrs to SD to board my girl with Joel. Hopefully this local trainer with help 🤞🤞🤞

I tried to use a “head halter” AKA (the G.L.) on my standard poodle but he puts on the brakes, stands and grinds his teeth. I’ll drag him to walk, and brakes go on even more and grinds even harder. Any suggestions? He’s dominant, stubborn and leash reactive….3 trainers, I’m managing him, barely.
This Malinois seems a great dog. He has a high energylavel, which is normal at that age, but all in all I find his behaviour not over the top...for a Malinois. I agree 100% with Joel, that they have to meet and interact with other dogs in a controlled environment ( not a dogpark), with a leader that will take control when needed. A young ( between 8 months and 2 years) male Malinois will often be "to much" for a lot of other breeds. My 1 year old German shephard can sometimes show the same behaviour. He has met and I let him meet as many other dogs as possible, Never any agression but I will always correct firm when he gets a bit rough, which he does.
But when he meets his sister from time to time, they are on the same energy level and the playing can be rough, but none of the two has the upperhand in the play, and they can go on for a really long time in the garden. They did that since they were pups. Still they really like each other and will behave inside the house when we meet its owners (friends) from time to time. I never ever would consider letting him play on this energy level with just any other dog.
Should the owner of the Malinois shorten up on the leash a little more? Not saying to be too tight, but it might give him more control. Kind of like when your fishing, you dont want too much slack in the line.
I hope to take your class one day Joel, I'm just trying to get my self ready to be a good student. I volunteered at the local shelter and am taking a short training class Tuesday. Thanks for these videos, they're inspirational for me and surely others! 🙏😊
The dog was battling the GL, I like to give some slack until the dog gets used to the GL or it’s a constant fight.
Gentle Leaders are the same as flat collars and leashes. Puppies aren't born being totally conditioned and comfortable with wearing a flat collar or being walked on a leash. We've all seen puppies freak out a little the first few times you put a collar around their neck, just like we've all seen them try to hunker down and buck and thrash around when you first start adding a little pressure with the leash. It takes time to teach them what those tools mean and for them to get used to wearing them. Gentle Leaders are no different. The dog will fight against them until you teach them otherwise.
One of the smartest dogs I ever had was such a brat. I had to be a hardass with her and people would feel sorry for her. They would be like " Why are you so mean with her shes a good dog." She was a good dog cause I was stricked. The smarter the animal the more you can't let things slide IMHO.
It would be very helpful if you put a mic on your clients.
I'm reticent ro interfere with dogs where there's no physical damage occuring. I feel I'm meddling with their ability to establish a hierarchy - like helicopter parenting.
Something I trust dogs to be able to do is sort out pecking order and profit from forming a pack.

your dogs, your house, your rules. Someone elses dog in someone elses houses, their rules. you may be cool with your dog dom'ing and humping, other people may not be. These dogs get training so they can function in someone elses place. and, no i am not suggesting that your dogs are not behaving, just making a point.
our mid-sized missile (hungarian mudi) hurt himself on the gentle leader :( I believe I conditioned him enough, then took short walks on our street, but the main problem is the 5th house's big GS dog, who is unsocialized & barks from inside the fence, & that's the ONLY house we can not pass without our dog also barking- lungeing-whineing to that fence from OUTSIDE :/ if they are let loose they just run up & down along the fence without barking.. anyway I wanted to use the head halter for this, to walk beside that fence without the misery, but he got "out of his mind" frolicking full force, me trying hold him back, and the gentle leader slightly cut into his muzzle on one side :/ he's great with other dogs outside, on & off leash, in our yard..

What's crazy is my friend has a blue pitty...she can't walk her...vacuum with her around is impossible for HER and the dog doesn't like ANY other dog...with her...I walk her vacuum and do what I want..she respects me but not her owner I tried to teach her and her heart is too far in it
To better word your “bit” on why a dog is attacking; If a dog is attacking other dogs it’s due to a lack of rules, boundaries and limitations. “NO” is the primary way we enforce the aforementioned.

6:05 Well no ish you got two males with two females which means one has to take dominance & claim the females for themselves. Whether it be by play or aggression. It may be the easiest way to get them around dogs but its also the easiest way to force them to be territorial.
Next level like needing an ecollar to ensue they are controlled in an open situation. Still can’t fathom your hate for e-collars overall. They give us so many abilities on the end goal
I haven’t always been clear about what I don’t like about ecollars, so here goes. When a high level shock is administered while a dog is looking at another dog and already doesn’t like the other dog, I’ve seen many many dogs become much worse.

The gaps in those retaining blocks always give me concern about dogs paws getting in them and twisting or something. Gentle leaders are crypotnite to dogs. Did I get that from you?
I sometimes use a half hitch with the leash on my dog when she gets rowdy, works just like a gentle leader.

Still, a dog is only as good as it’s trained…despite genetics. Every dog can be a sweetheart, but as I’ve said about my newest rescue, “You can’t take the terror, 😅out of a Terrier.” She was bred to kill varmits, I’m not going to discipline her hard for that inbred instinct.
My other dogs are large livestock guardians, big doofus boys who only wake up when coyotes are on the property. My little terrier, she gets all upset over squirrels. 😂. She still watches the big boys, and does what they do when they’re out and patrolling.
My dogs a fricken faker for sure, plays nice for 15 min then when he wants to be the boss he missles at male dogs that he thinks he can take lol, just 7 months old but I gotta be on top of the little fucker

Can you please do a video on this horrific thing I just saw pop up on my feed- its about this horrible person Tina Frey, her since shut down business Cypress Arrow, and just some horrific abuse she inflicted on dogs there, one being a Cane Corso…. And I saw a comment under it mentioning you & actually went to bat for you 😝 It seems not everyone understands there is a HUGE difference between discipline/corrections/consequences and actual ABUSE. I was saying Im SURE you would not condone that kind of treatment not just bc its abusive but bc its not productive or effective and it could lead to a dog becoming fearful/reactive/aggressive and hurting someone, especially a powerful dog like a Cane Corso. I was truly horrified by what I saw. She had this dog cross tied, they were choking it, while she was whipping it in the face! The poor thing!!!! She did face some charges & im not sure what ended up happening with it….
It made me SO mad… if only she could be taken out back and….. Im not allowed to say that so I’ll stop there but you can probably guess where I was going…. 😐🫢 There’s a special place in hell for people like Tina Frey 🤦♀️
