My drum mentor/friend and I used to watch and study your videos since 2010. We had fun and really excited to try all the new learnings from your videos. I just turned 29 years old last OCT 31. And here I am, still watching your videos and discovering even more cool stuff. Sadly, my mentor passed away last year. And I always remember him when I see you upload. Thank God for you life, Sir Mike. God bless you always.
I don't miss any video of yours, and the are several reasons why, but this is the ultimate: you really know how to teach and how to make us understand what you are teaching. Thank you, Mike!
Oh c’mon Dirty Mike, that fill is pushing on being indecent. 😂. Bring back my G rated, Pat Boone - Debbie Boone family friendly fills. Killing it buddy.
Mike! Always a fan of your playing and teaching but always love the quality of your videos! If you don’t mind me asking, how do you get the transparent look of the notation at the bottom when you’re playing? It’s a great look! Best to you, sir! Thank you 😊
Hmmm. Intriguing. I’ve been padding around, working on my balance. Perhaps my missing element is to land … differently. I’ll suppose I’ll await the final vote count. 🤔
Thank you Mike for always providing us with new ideas! I found a fun way to remember and get a feel for the pattern. Use this fill with 16th notes as the main beat of this Latin feel tune: th-cam.com/video/qONyBhdSZ8Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VXg1vLE42hHmgM9o It also helps imagine variations as I tend to add the bass drum on the first beat or put in four bass drum kicks before the first beat. Once you run through this song a few times you can try to MJ it as 32nd notes.
I’m an intermediate drummer I say that with both pride and humility. Some of the chops & grooves I can never play completely or up to speed but the pieces, partial phases are very cool and fit into my playing and abilities, also some the the 32nd stuff sounds great as 16th’s.
How can a drummer thats very good at keeping time when having personal practice with a metronome but losing time when rehearsing or performing with a band get better and have something like an internal metronome/pulse in himself
@mikeslessons I mean I know you are joking but fk it would be funny if you switched again after I wrote this 😆 🤣 DW have that far richer tone that sings and suits your linear/ modern playing style imho. Gretch is great for Jazz or Orchestral bass drum tunings like Carlock etc. Generally speaking ofcourse
@@ajdrums8075 I totally get what you are trying to say, and I really do want to respond in a kind way, yet text can be difficult at conveying tone so PLEASE take this in the way it's intended, which is with empathy and a desire to help you out in the future. What you are referring to, the "DW tone," is actually just clear heads, mixing, and a fully mic'd kit. What you are calling the Gretsch tone is just coated heads (top and bottom), less processing in the mix, and only two mics. I can easily make a DW sound warm and vintage and a Gretsch sound focused and modern. I'm not saying that the two brands don't have subtle differences in their sound, but it's nowhere near as much as you might think. So, what you are really saying here is that videos like this one (licks and chops) sound better to you when the drums are super focused and present instead of warm and natural. That is something that NO ONE can disagree with because it is your opinion, and I 100% respect that. I just hope this helps you understand what you are hearing through your computer a bit better in the future - Mike J
@mikeslessons I fully appreciate what you are saying. It is interesting then that you must have changed recording and head preferences immediately after switching from DW to Gretsch as the difference was fairly significant. Ofcourse heads play a big role but I note when I owned a DW kit I could never recreate the same richness on a different kit. I also not that Lang for example mentioned he switched from Sonor to DW because of the horizontal grain on their shells which other companies don't offer it was his opinion/ explanation on their extra richness and depth. I'm a big Gretsch fan, love the Broadkaster but to my ears atleast you have tried to deepen your sound on Gretsch but never recreated DW. I also note that I think you used to play clear on DW so that is an obvious big change as you said. Too much analysis though and it really doesn't matter haha. I play a Tama Starclassic Jazz Walnut/Birch with a 16" bass drum though sooooo 🤣. Your content and playing is always high quality and of course the Gretsch still sounds great so that's all that matters.
Hours = powers is going in my practice journal right now. 😂 Killer fill. Definitely rated R.

Absolutely! ALL the 32nd notes stuff can and should be played as 16ths. You got this Brian :)
You are not alone. Just do your thing. Internet drumming is not real life.
Hours are Powers, people 😂 💪🏾⏳️💪
you can also augment this stuff - I can't do double kicks that quickly (due to a physical limitation) so I substitute floor toms and it sounds great!
Very Naz

Long time watcher. I know I shouldn't say this but man I miss the DW tone, way better for your playing style. There, I said it 😂😅
