  • I explain why I think the Barbenheimer phenomenon is a "once in a blue moon" situation that will have difficulty being replicated, despite the best efforts of studios.

the crazy thing is this could have started with Child's Play and Toy Story 4 five years ago (even the Chucky advertisements got into it but they didn't exactly have the equal box office numbers)

Going to be honest I thought it was very weird. After all they were very different movies. And I'm surprised I got paired up together like that.

Now one thing I wonder is if we're ever gonna get like a triple freature seems very unlikely but it could happen never know and that be neat and totally something

Do you think Transformers One and The Wild Robot could be considered a double feature because they came out in the same week with everyone praising about it.

I think the reason the “Barbenheimer” meme exploded in popularity was that the Barbie franchise and Oppenheimer’s life had a lot more in common.
The Barbie doll came out just after the Cold War started (1959) and nuclear weapons were a constant threat to the world and the revolutionary idea of giving women a “voice” through a doll was something that could speak to many different people.
Oppenheimer’s life revolved around technology and the tech surrounding nuclear weapons brought about new advancements in warfare technology. Also, his relationships with women are also mentioned in the movie that play a major part in his life.
I think those interesting themes allowed those movies to speak to the audience in a fairly specific and nuanced way.
I think it was lightning in a bottle. You can’t really make a phenomenon like that on purpose. Sometimes, these films have nothing in common.
A similar phenomenon happened around the time of the writers/actors strikes. Godzilla Minus One & The Boy and the Heron have a lot in common with WW2. They became smash hits and the fact they are both Oscar winners says a lot about their incredible quality. Had the strikes not happened, I doubt those movies would’ve been released overseas or been as big as they were financially.
It’s an interesting case but I do appreciate a fun media sensation.

I think Boy and the Heron and Godzilla Minus One would have been successful regardless of the strikes. Miyazaki's fanbase had continued to grow since the release of The Wind Rises and particularly found a large audience after Ghibli allowed the films to appear on streaming a few years ago. GKIDS's re-releases of Ghibli films also do well on a regular basis. Meanwhile, Toho themselves handled much of the international release of Godzilla and it had strong word-of-mouth everywhere.
The only different outcome had the strikes not happened was Godzilla Minus One wouldn't have won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, since Dune Part Two would have stayed in its original early November release date and likely win that category.

@@MrCoat I can see that being a possibility. Either way, I’m glad things turned out the way they did.
The strikes gave other studios a chance to show off their movies so instead of a crowded schedule, we got two iconic movies releasing close to each other and they could be appreciated in isolation to the rest of the industry’s biggest films.
