    In Australia our cancer council has a highly publicised campaign of Slip, Slop, Slap. It’s slip on a shirt slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat. We also wear rash shirts when we go swimming because they block out the sun rays. Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world because there is a hole in the ozone layer just above us and so more UV rays get through, plus we are a warm country where we all love to live at the beach. I’m 66 so lived in the sun before we knew how bad it was. I have been very protective of my fair skin since I was 16 though because I burn very easily and badly. I stay out of the sun during the middle of the day but still I have had 4 skin cancers removed. It really does matter to be extra careful in childhood to protect your skin. 😊

    It seems like blocking the sun has been more encouraged in the last 30-50 years. My dad was being treated for melanoma and he had to find a sunblock with mosquito repellent because mosquitoes are always so bad in the summer. At first it was very difficult to find that combination but it eventually became more readily available.
    Now a lot of women wear sunscreen or sunblock under their makeup.
    I remember when getting a tan was a big deal. People did all sorts of crazy things just to get a great tan. Now those people are wondering why they ever did that.
    You would think after all this time and all the danger from the sun, that someone would have come out with a better product. Reapplying sunscreen every hour or looking like a ghost just doesn't seem to be the most efficient ways of guarding against the sun.
    I've never been a fan of laying out in the sun. And the sun seems so intense these days that I can't imagine anyone doing that.
    But I know people are wearing more protective clothing now to help keep the sun out.
    Thanks for letting us know about protection provided by sunscreen and sunblock! Of course, none of us will be able to get the image out of our heads when Dr Zalzal asked Dr Weening to apply sunscreen to his back! 😩
    Hopefully some day we'll have something better than just sunscreen and sunblock! 😋
    Thanks for sharing another great video! 👍

    This topic is fascinating to me. In the last 50 years as a society we have been told to cover up and use sunscreen/sunblock and avoid exposure to the sun. We also as a society have worked primarily indoors for the last few decades. Our ancestors worked outside all the time and did not have the protection we do today. We however are completely Vitamin D deficient compared to them and have many more types of cancers. I wonder if there is any correlation to the lack of Vitamin D and the increases in diseases and cancers we see today?

      So there is for sure. Issue is the sun is different now due to the ozone layer and our bodies are different likely due to the food that we consume. So we most often need supplements. This is safer than unprotected sun to get your vitamin D

    • @ClareHarrison-qi3bw
      @ClareHarrison-qi3bw ปีที่แล้ว

      A doctor did say that he'd trade all the cancers he has had to treat, for people going outside for fresh air and exercise and those cancers avoided. Also, it is said we are now seeing the resulting cancers now of people sunbathing for the last 30 odd years. But also we may be seeing the results of 30 odd years of putting sunscreens onto our skins. And we are all individuals with a different physiological make-up, all using modern foodstuffs or potions, the whole combination of which could be cancerous to some. 'Moderation' again , I think, is the way.
      Anyway, what do I know!

    Watch the UV index, Don't be fooled by the temperature UV index tells the story. I'm currently under the care of a dermatologist due to a melanoma a year ago. So I asked the doc about a friend that was really dark as he spends much time at the lake in my high country of Colorado. She had two things to say; A. This dark tan is your skin crying for help contrary to what I bet most people may think. B. Skin cancer from sun is a cumulative thing. Who has the nicest looking skin? People in the northeast and northwest. Sun and the associated UV is not your friend. Learning the hard way isn't what you want.

    Great video! You said some very wise things during that video which were perceived as jokes yet it is worthwhile saying them again. You’re best protection against the sun is to simply not expose your bare ski to the sun. In Africa a wise man once told me you are always in the shade under your clothes. Actually heat is likely less damaging to the skin than the radiation from direct sun exposure. In short maybe there is a lot to be learned by watching how the people of the deserts dress if they have to travel during day light in the desert I doubt very much that they would rely on sunscreen lotions to protect their skin or head from the sun! Not a single piece of their skin is exposed to the sun for very long. Sorry for the people that live in hell. 🌞🌞🌞 maybe all outdoor pool should be covered so people swim in the shade with no screen lotions. The water would stay clean longer. Swimming in a public pool outdoor on a hot summer day is like swimming in oil. Once again great video thank you for producing it.

    Another great video docs, thank you. My dermatologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Toronto) explained to me that when you buy sunscreen/sunblock products look for ones that block both UVA and UVB. The UVA acronym s/b circled on the label (not sure what that means). I wear it everyday, 365 days/year on my face and have found good universal tint mineral sunscreens from Vichy. LaRoche Posay Anthelios is also good but it’s a chemical sunscreen and stings my eyes so gave up on it.
    For my body I try to cover up with UV resistant clothing cause I really don’t like the sunscreen transferring onto my clothing and furniture but if I must wear it I use Ombrelle mineral. Don’t forget the backs of your hands too.
    Gone are the days of slathering myself in baby oil, climbing into that lifeguard tower, and broiling my days away. Strikes fear in my heart just thinking about it.

    Hi guys! Thank you so much for sharing your information with us. I am fair-skinned with blue eyes, plus freckles, and as I'm in my 60's, we didn't have sunblock or sunscreen in my younger years. I've been burnt countless times in my lifetime, mostly back in those days before sunscreen was available. I was diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma on my forehead five years ago. I had to have that surgically removed, which left a sizable scar. I have an appointment with my doctor to do a biopsy, as I have another potential cancer on the side of my face near my jaw. Needless to say, I'm not happy about this, but there isn't a lot that I can do about it now, even though I've been wearing sunscreen on my face since I was in my 20's. I found your comparisons between sunblock and sunscreen to be very interesting, and I too have been wondering about the potential consequences of sunscreen being absorbed into the body. I wonder if anyone is currently researching this, as it would be good to know. I have Balsam of Peru allergy, and I do know that certain sunscreens cause me to break out into a terrible rash. I wonder if using sunblock would prevent this as it isn't absorbed into the skin? Something to think about! Thanks again guys! Julie from My Wonderful BC Life

Both chemical and mineral sunscreens would give you the same protection, choose what you would like and feels good on your skin and your budget, keep in mind the majority of mineral sunscreens (Zinc and Titanium) would give you a noticeable white cast especially if they are not tinted, and formulas that have minimal to no white cast run $$.

    No one is talking about the UVC rays which is what really brings the radiation from the sun which makes that sun feel so much hotter than in years past

    • @chrislook3395
      @chrislook3395 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      UVC is absorbed in the upper atmosphere and doesn’t reach the earth surface. The reason things feel hotter(on average) is global warming due to the increased greenhouse effect (reflection of infrared radiation back to the earth) from increased concentration of greenhouse gases (methane, CO2, etc)

    • @TalkingWithDocs

      With any sun exposure no matter what time its, you are getting multiple range of rays (UVA,UVB) in addition to the infrared, actually UV rays are the main cause of burns and skin cancers, yeah morning sunlight would be less intensive and would take longer to give you a burn than a mid day for example.

    But UV light is not visible, so even if you can't see light through your clothing, UV light may be getting through. Conversely, when you can see light, a lot of UV light may be blocked.
    And we've been learning recently that humans need some sun. Not a lot, and the amount depends on skin tone. But vitamin D and nitric oxide production, and potentially other chemicals vital to life, are mediated by sunlight.

    • @TalkingWithDocs

      So the shirt test is a guideline in light of where visible light is on the spectrum. As for vitamin D most specialists would say it's safer to take a supplement than the cumulative risk of skin cancer.

    Gone are the days of baby oil. My parents brought me a bottle of coconut oil for suntanning from Hawaii. I was about 20/21 in 1974/75 and a group if us went to the beach for a few hours and I slathered it on. Drank beer from bottles that were partially buried in the sand and cold ocean water on the bottles. That night i was covered in blisters from shoulders to the waste. Was in agony for over a week. Mom kept slathering on Noxema, but I think it made it worse. Never used that coconut stuff again! Aaah...to be young and stupid! 😂 this was long before the sun protection we have today
