I try to do three things for exercise. When I am working, I try to get up and walk frequently through the day, go on a treadmill for 30 minutes, and I lift weights twice a week.
Another great video. That fifth pillar shook me a bit. Spirituality? My brain immediately thought 'religion'. I had to look up spirituality just to get a better understanding. I stole the following from the interwebs and it suggests what to strive for regarding spirituality (for other dummies like me). 1)Very humble and doesn’t feel superior to anyone. 2)Strives to work his or her duty or task faithfully. 3)Not attached to the material things. 4)Not afraid of losing anything in life. 5)Never looks at the imperfection of others. 6)Happy.
Love this episode! It all makes so much sense. Our bodies absolutely respond to the food we eat and how we live in general. Since I started watching your channel, I have made some huge changes in diet and lifestyle. And I really do feel better. But, there is always more to do….. one day at a time. Thank you for bringing Dr. Steyn in on this very important & informative video, and thank you for all that you do to keep us informed. You are appreciated! Have a great week! 😊
Hi, been following for a bit and your clips have been very helpful. Long post here but hopefully this help others realize there is a way forward. 1) I hope you bring Dr. Steyn back periodically to talk about more specifics. 2) in Nov 2023, (I'm 60 years old), I weighed 28slbs and at a dinner party and "playing" with a blood pressure monitor I was at 149/110. Our host who is a RN, pulled me aside and told me I need to deal with this. I told her I was dealing with energy spikes and lows, very lethargic when I got up in the mornings, woke up 2-3 times during the night. It wasn't good. Fast forward to now, my blood pressure has dropped to 130/95 (not great but better than it was), I stopped skipping breakfast (now I eat 1/2 cup oatmeal with a handful of walnuts, with a banana or twice a week sub in frozen fruit), use the "plate method to eyeball my dinner plate so that I have 1/2 plate of veggies, 1/4 plate of carbs (rice, sweet potato, or white potato) and 1/4 plate of meat/fish/shellfish. I also upped my water intake (not incl coffee etc.) to 6-8 cups pr day. Happy to say that this has resulted in higher energy levels (and it took time to adapt, so not over night or event after a week or two) and I now weight 269lbs. I just got a blood pressure monitor so will have some stats on how that continues to improve. I also incorporated a nutrition tracker into my changes in the past couple weeks and WOW, that has been an eye opener . Caution: you don't want to get hung up on that (learned this from some top fitness people out there), but it will help you understand what your decisions mean to help you adapt your changes and as you make lifestyle changes. What I've experienced sine making some minor changes as I start are: not lethargic in the morning (took about 2 months), feeling full **less reaching for a bag of chips or something in the evenings because I felt full), in fact my tracker has told me I am not eating enough calories during the day for safe weight loss in the past week and I need to find ways to compensate for this. Over the past few weeks my energy level has increased and I find myself "wanting" to do "something" because I have this new found energy to want to go do something. So now I am starting to incorporate daily walks + minor weight lifting into my weekly schedule. CONCLUSION: I work from home and have a very sedentary lifestyle. What I've earned is that lifestyle changes do not happen immediately, small steps are the key to sustained success. I still enjoy my pizza, potato chips, even a slice of carrot or chocolate cake once in a while, but its much more moderated now (+ I find with my changes I often don't feel the want or need to have it) and physiologically liberating which is a win too! I'm not a nutritionist/dietician, just a guy making what I think are more sensible choice to improve my life. END NOTE: If this resonates with you reach out, maybe we can form a group on facebook or something to create a group to help each other...
Got it... veggies and 'Alita de Pollo', exercise, sleep, community, spirituality, no tire slashing. Absolutely a super video, informative and LOL's! All the best!
Great video hope you bring her back. Exercise is tiring but after you have completed it you feel a sense of accomplishment that makes it worthwhile. Being proactive in your life defeats depression.
Grateful for internet as all my health knowledge has come from this forum along with talk back radio, books.... Wow Dr Daniel Styne I will be following. I am sure being raised by parents in the medical arena must provide these pillars, knowledge to their family members. Without you Docs sharing your advice many of us would not know how to improve our life, thankyou.
When I was battling depression many years ago, I came up with 5 pillars of mental health. Amazing how close they were to these. Mine were healthy diet, exercise, good sleep, sunshine in the optic nerve, and prayer.
Wonderful conduit of information! Diet is my downfall. I make no excuses, I like to eat! Rest would follow. If I sit still, I feel guilty for not working. My prayer time, meditation time is never compromised. One's life is a marathon journey, not a sprint. Learn, make adjustments but keep a grateful heart.
Great video so true you become who you hang out with !!!!!!!!! The most used appliance in most houses is the micro wave to cook unhealthy food . A lot of us need life style changes so many things that folks do that lead to premature cemetery nap . You all stay warm some nasty weather up there take care . (great guest doc)
Excellent! 5 PILLARS OF HEALTH Nutrition & food variety Movement & exercise Community & friendship Relaxation & sleep Purpose & accomplishments You become the average of the five people you hang with. Choose wisely.
My entire career has been a sitting job but when the pandemic started I changed my focus on my health journey, it’s been hard but I lost some weight & still working on it, great encouraging info…thanks docs yup North America rocks! 😊
Loved the video. I had never heard the topic before. I knew nutrition, exercise and sleep are very important to health. But I was very surprised by Community and Spirituality as being two other Pillars of Health. Fascinating. Thank you!
"Where did they find 3000 nurses....if you are out there" best line 💜funny, sad, but so true. Looking forward to the chicken wing video😉 For me the Pillar of Relax & Rest when it comes to sleep. I'll listen to something to help me fall asleep (guided mediation, sleep story, sounds etc.) but it's staying a sleep is the real struggle - between the hours of 2am-4am are the worst. Sound asleep at 5am-6am just in time for the ⏰ to go off!!
Hi Dr. Zalzal and Dr. Weening. I need to find a group of friends I guess. Lol. They love to drink and to smoke. I had these wonderful people in my life for over 40 years. I went to high school and Grammer school with them and I wouldn't change that for anything. I think if you do your best everyday than what more does anyone else need except a friend with chocolate, and that's me!!!!! Lol. Thank you for sharing
One of your best videos to date. I’m happy I can truthfully say I can check off all of the boxes here. Movement is critical, I heard on tv a long time ago that being sedentary was WORSE than smoking. That’s incredible. Again, very excellent video.
YOU guys are my favorite part of the internet. Well, actually, you are my favorite part of any given week. If I had a bewitching nose, I would move to Canada and become your patient!
Thanks for this. I’m doing well with all 5, but the hardest one for me is Movement. Pain in my knees makes sustained exercise quite painful so I get easily frustrated. In the past 6 months I have made major changes in my nutrition in order to address high cholesterol and inflammation.
Great topic I broke my ankle two years ago and the isolation I experienced was devastating. It made me realize I need to make friends that llve close to me. If I had friends that would have visited I'm sure my recovery would have been better even if it was only the emotional aspect of it all.
Great video. Very good advice... always make healthy choices..if you slip up every now and then..so what . keep on the journey..I recently have beat diabetes..no more meds..lost weight and healthy lifestyle. now working on blood pressure..which is better now too...always room for improvement..on our health journey..👍💯❤️😃
Chicken wings. I was vegan 25 years, I ran half marathons, ran 3-6 mi a day in heat and snow, and bike commuted 14 mi r/t to work every workday for 12 years year-round during my 40s. My hip went real bad (which brought me to this channel) and I had a THR but my activity levels never returned. It’s snowing and I just baked a vegan chocolate cake and frosted it with real buttercream frosting for dinner. Because pillars of a life well-lived includes real butter. I’m rambling. It’s the sugar. But I’d love to have my athletic lifestyle back… 🤷♀️ Chicken wings. Thanks Docs!
What a great topic, and another charming doc! I’ve periodically drawn a wheel of life, where things like these are measured on the spokes; once you connect them, you see how lumpy the wheel is, whereas a more balanced life makes a smooth round wheel. I’ve never included spirituality or community as an agnostic loner (lol) so my wheel always has a divot - or in this case, my building would definitely be canted due to wonky pillars! May need to consider some improvements!
Well another home run!! Fabulous VLOG. I don't know of any docs. that do what you do. I'm so enjoying the topics that you discuss. And all your guests. Keep hitting them out of the park. You are my 'besties'.
It all sounds so simple and so difficult to do! I had a big-time health scare, and that made me a total believer in positive lifestyle choices, I changed a lot of habits for the better. The one pillar I could still work on is spirituality, there's always something....
This is why I have no friends, that way they can't be a bad influence on me. Great video guys and lots of info except when I look for Dr. Steyn info you didn't include it in the description, maybe we should revisit the episode on the memory improvement. Thanks guys.
Another excellent video, the “hits” just keep coming. Interesting to hear the issues people face in other lands. I had the opportunity to live in Central India during the 60’s. I returned to the USA with a deeper appreciation for life in my home country. Thanks!
I've been just sat around isolated and also not exercising and smoking tobacco excessively for about a year or a bit more and my mental and physical health has drastically changed I used to be super fit and healthy before but I'm trying to get healthy again and this helped massively thanks your the best 😁
First, I love all your videos, so glad I found your channel, The point about a ship changing angle and ending up far away in the end is great, Small changes can help people who are discouraged by having to make drastic life changes. I'm 65 , been healthy all my life, never been to a doctor except for a few years ago when I got hit by a car and just a couple months ago a total knee replacement. Later I want to write a comment explaining how your videos actually saved my knee replacement recovery.
I'm lacking in the community pillar. I have many animals that give me daily purpose and keep me healthy and happy. Two dogs, two horses, 9 chickens. I miss riding with friends and going to the barn. Riding my horse in the forest...I always say this is where God lives It's my spiritual place for sure. This year I will be boarding my horse out and not keeping them at home any longer. I find it too lonely. At 61 years old I will be starting my 3rd young horse. God help me !! LOL
Thanks so much. This is so timely coming out of the COVID fog over the last few years. Helps me to see what I need to work on. I particularly liked the concept of it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I’m going to make a little spread sheet and put the 5pillars down the left side and days across and see how I do in a month.
Could you bring in a cardiologist to explain amolydosis. I have never heard of this but my husband had symptoms for a year before he was diagnosed. It may help viewers.
Great video on the Pillars of Health. I loved Dr Weenings wink after Dr Stein encouraged us to eat more vegetables..😉 (sorry if I misspelled your names)
"sitting is the next smoking" yet I guess that makes sense in way. (lack of exercise). Did not think she was from Africa wow! Seems to know a lot and her comments are good to know. thanks for the info!
Nutrition, good. Exercise, good. Rest, good. Community, BAD! Dealing with people is stressful and stress is bad. I had to laugh when Doc Paul said she had a "slight" accent. Like being "a little bit" pregnant! Hahaha. Love the videos.
I love this vlog. My primary activity is partner dancing that really covers pillar 2, 3, and 4. I also think that resistance training should be mentioned in the 2nd pillar. I’m doing my best with number 1 but I need help there. As for number 5 I’m not much into spirituality. I do have a purpose in life to be a good friend, father, grandfather, and treat all folks more kindly.
Very interesting and informative. I try to follow most of those pillars but the only one I have a problem with is Community. I’ve always have been a homebody and worked many years in an ER so I found solace in quiet and calm at my home.
I use the 4 pillars of health. 1. Nutrition: you are what you eat. 2. Exercise: Your body is designed to move, you should move it in a significant way every day. 3. Stress management: Stress is a killer. Learn to manage it. Prayer, meditation, etc. 4. Sleep: Sleep is when you body repairs itself. Get the right amount of sleep.
I agree about the social aspect, but the quality of the people you spend time with is huge. I let my department chair cause me so much stress that I had a stroke, and then, ignoring my doctors’ orders, she pushed me into having a seizure, telling me I wasn’t working hard enough. I came within inches of dying. It is better to be alone than to have a bad social group. Bad friends and coworkers are at least as dangerous as smoking.
This is a great video! Movement seems to be my hardest area to incorporate!! Knee and joint issues due to inflammation that I am trying to deal with by adjusting my diet.
I just happen to see this come up and I guess it has only been up a few minutes. Anyway, another great video. I think the social isolation one is the hardest for me to control in my life and it really does have a huge negative effect on my health. It's interesting about social media because in a way it makes you feel connected but that also is kind of misleading because all the people are inside of the computer, not right there with you. But it also is helpful, and I think this channel is very good for making lonely, disconnected people feel better because it is positive and health oriented and it's pretty cool to get a comment every time you post. I guess that is kind of pathetic but just that can mean a lot to someone who is alone. Sorry for another long post. I tend to go on too long. Thanks for being out there docs. 💗
I appreciate your comment and the comment of the doctors, but I don't think it's strictly a one-way cause and effect. In other words, though I agree that social isolation can contribute to or exacerbate poor health, it's also true that poor health can lead to social isolation. The better I feel the more apt I am to socialize. And if I don't feel well, socializing often makes me feel worse.
I found volunteering helped to a cause that's important to me. I've met like minded people but it's easier to connect since we all are there for the same base reason.
Rewatching this I am surprised the lady doctor did not mention pets! Studies have shown havibg a pet increases cognitive function as well as providing companionship (community), making you think faster, and dogs help with exercise. (Not sure about whether my darling bunny🐇 helps in that score, but I am doing a heckuva lot more vacuuming, bending down to get to her level.) Plus the unconditional love (ok 1 condition, my 🐇is a foodie) is absolutely over the moon glorious!
A huge factor of 'eating right' and 'exercising' enough is to *make it attractive*! To almost entirely eliminate fried foods in my diet (I cook for myself) is learning to make incredible soups. Have those chicken wings (or drumsticks), but cook them in a soup, along with whatever veggies you can find on clearance at the local stupidmarket or grocer. Some veggies you can afford regular price: Carrots, yams, bagged potatoes, onions, cabbage, etc. Experiment with it, and don't be afraid to add some bouillon or tomato paste (a little goes a long way) and spices (Oregano, pepper, etc). Cheap, wholesome and incredibly delicious. And highly digestible! The downside? Well, inevitably it ends up tasting great....errr...and you can eat too much because you can't leave it alone. But even there, at least it's highly nutritional. And exercise? Get a dog, a bike or both. The bottom line for all of these things is to find out how rewarding it is. Dr Steyn mentioned 'endorphins': God's reward for doing what the average person isn't driven to do. The best drug I've ever found.
Really enjoy this channel. Because it is so informative while being light hearted. PS Steyn is really pronounced "Stain" 😜 Found this channel while recovering from a stoma reversal after colon resection caused by complicated diverticulitis....ah maybe idea for futur e episode.
Watching talking with docs is now the 6th pillar.
😃😃👍
Yay ME!
Thanks Tory

Great conversation! A positive mindset and laughter would be a great addition to the five pillars. You three set a great example!
I try to do three things for exercise. When I am working, I try to get up and walk frequently through the day, go on a treadmill for 30 minutes, and I lift weights twice a week.
Shout out to Dr Steyn from a hot and sunny South Africa.💝
Very cool Paula!
She's so sweet and pleasant to listen to.
For sure
Another great video. That fifth pillar shook me a bit. Spirituality? My brain immediately thought 'religion'. I had to look up spirituality just to get a better understanding. I stole the following from the interwebs and it suggests what to strive for regarding spirituality (for other dummies like me).
1)Very humble and doesn’t feel superior to anyone.
2)Strives to work his or her duty or task faithfully.
3)Not attached to the material things.
4)Not afraid of losing anything in life.
5)Never looks at the imperfection of others.
6)Happy.
Great summary. For some that is religion. For others it’s much more generic. All the best
Love this episode! It all makes so much sense. Our bodies absolutely respond to the food we eat and how we live in general. You too Jan!

Very true!
She is a delightful.
Yea Bob
Love the flat tire analogy. Thank you for this.

You’re not “your”
@@bobbybeasely6915 They didn't say they wanted better grammar/spelling!! lol
Time to turn it around
Agree with every point. You earned my sub. Thank you!
Welcome aboard!
Great video! I agree with all the pillars!
Thanks!
I loved the thought about community. Thinking of the isolation during Covid this makes a lot of sense.👍🏻
Absolutely!
Please do! Glad you like them.
All great advice! Thanks for sharing. My 5 pillars need some help, for sure, except for relaxation-I have that one down pat! 😊
You got this!
LOL
Good luck!
You can do it!
Could you bring in a cardiologist to explain amolydosis. I have never heard of this but my husband had symptoms for a year before he was diagnosed. It may help viewers.
We can add it to the list for sure
Great video on the Pillars of Health. I loved Dr Weenings wink after Dr Stein encouraged us to eat more vegetables..😉 (sorry if I misspelled your names)
Close Steyn. Glad you liked it!
The 5 most important I believe in are:
Clean nutrition
Exercise
Fresh air
Adequate sleep
Stress management
Pretty close to hers
Great video! It’s so true that little steps add up over time to help us feel/be more in control of our own lives. Thanks. I love chicken wings ❤
So true!
Thanks!
Welcome!
Another great video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
"sitting is the next smoking" yet I guess that makes sense in way. (lack of exercise). Did not think she was from Africa wow! Seems to know a lot and her comments are good to know. thanks for the info!
Very welcome Joseph
You guys are great.
Thanks David!
Nutrition, good. Exercise, good.
Rest, good. Community, BAD!
Dealing with people is stressful and stress is bad.
I had to laugh when Doc Paul said she had a "slight" accent. Like being "a little bit" pregnant! Hahaha.
Love the videos.
Glad you liked it Tom
What a great list!
Glad you think so!
Nice work michael!
Very interesting and informative.
I try to follow most of those pillars but the only one I have a problem with is Community. I’ve always have been a homebody and worked many years in an ER so I found solace in quiet and calm at my home.
Thanks for sharing!
My main pillar is the one I sleep on. Seriously though, another entertaining and informative video. Great to have a variety of guests.
Glad you enjoyed!
Nice David
Great info, great to have laughs. Food for mental health seems to be more important now which makes sense
Probably true.
This episode just sounds so interesting and it makes sense. These 5 pillars are simple you should have 10 pillars 😊
Yes more pillars!
@@TalkingWithDocs thanks docs!
Yet another helpful and entertaining video from the Docs, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is awesome! Thanks docs!
Glad you like it!
Awwww just love this video- my weekly dose of funny and education 😂😊🤓
Glad you liked it Lynn
This is a great video! Movement seems to be my hardest area to incorporate!! Knee and joint issues due to inflammation that I am trying to deal with by adjusting my diet.
You can do it!
Great video, Thanks! Very informative and fun 😂
Glad it was helpful!
@@chaz6399 Very true.
I found volunteering helped to a cause that's important to me.
I've met like minded people but it's easier to connect since we all are there for the same base reason.
Nope Words. We are here with you!
Agreed Chaz!
Well said
I wish I had learned earlier about sitting. I have paid the price for sitting 22 years at my job.
Never too late Barbara
Purpose is very important. I think.
It sure is Bren. Underestimated
Love to watch your videos
Thanks so much
Really enjoy this channel. Because it is so informative while being light hearted. PS Steyn is really pronounced "Stain" 😜 Found this channel while recovering from a stoma reversal after colon resection caused by complicated diverticulitis....ah maybe idea for futur e episode.
Ok we can add it to the list
I love this channel.
Thanks Prof Ray!
