My friend Gordon Thomas has just written a novel based on Ethel Smyth's life, which has drawn me to listening to her music. This is a terrific piece with great melodies and excellent orchestration and deserves to be played, widely known and enjoyed.

Ethel Smyth was for me an unknown composer until I discovered her through the YT advertising. The combination of a horn and a violin solo with the orchestra attracted me, reminding me of the chamber music of Brahms ( trio for horn, violin and piano). I was not deceived. The writing is quite classical, especially for a piece written in 1927, but the dialog betwwen the soloists and the orchesra is inventive, full of surprises and appealing details. This is an intersting composition.

Can I recommend you check out her wonderful opera The Wreckers? Very dramatic and thrilling.

@@foveauxbear This work by her is better, I think, than her more famous The Wreckers. Both works merit a listen though.

Echt bewundernswert!

I first heard of Ethel Smyth recently, while reading Bruno Walter, A World Elsewhere, by Erik Ryding and Rebecca Pechefsky. Bruno
Walter was a big fan, and premiered some of her works.

She and Amy Beach (aka Mrs. H.H.A. Beach) and Florence Price were the pioneers of female composers who worked actively during a time when there were ZERO women in symphony orchestras, zero female music directors, VERY few female instrumental virtuosos - and what few there were, were pretty well in last place as classical music was not known to be a woman's 'thing'... Women at that time were destined to teach instrumental music lessons, rear children, tend the garden, and keep the home for their husband. Thankfully, a few women dared to compose - knowing that their output was not going to ever be recognized in their lifetimes.

Interesting, there is a touch of the Brahms Violin Concerto in it but quite a work of its own individuality. Probably the only works of similar conservative style were some of SIbelius' works. Unfortunately, its conservatism probably worked against it being considered a great work at the time.
But the recurrence of motives in a cyclical fashion and their ongoing variation seems informed by SIbelius with a few bits of the harmonic language of Debussy (a whole tone scale pops up here or there and harmonized). I like this work very much - the orchestration for the choice of solo instruments she chose must have been a challenge - which she pulls off wonderfully. An excellent work that needs to be heard and relieve hearers of the repetition of overplayed (though worthwhile) works.

Sadly I have to disagree with almost everything you say. I cannot hear the composition styles of Brahms, Sibelius or Debussy in any of this music.
      What I can hear is..................Smyth!
A fascinating choice of solo instruments that works very well indeed.

Does anyone else hear bits of Star Wars in this? I wonder if this influenced John Williams.

Davvero in gamba come donna e come compositrice.
