  • This video explains music therapy in an interview with Rachael Finnerty - a music therapist who is accredited in Canada. It introduces music therapy interventions, identifies diagnoses that benefit from music therapy and explains the advantages of using it as part of treatment. It also looks at a study that assessed the effectiveness of music therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease.

My dream career is a music therapist, and if possible, specializing in music therapy for kids and teens with mental illnesses and neurodivergences specifically. As a mentally ill and neurodivergent person, I want to help those like me by giving them what I wish I got if it'll help them.

The problem is not the music clips themselves. Its the volume of the therapist speaking. They should have amplify the speaker volume and but the background music in a lower volume. It then would have been perfect

Are there also research opportunities as a music therapist? I'd like to create experiments to see how music can be better used to help people with cognitive diseases. Would MD in music therapy or music cognition better fit this goal (or maybe cog psych)?

When we practice and see the truth of the body and mind, we’ll see that it’s not happy sometimes and unhappy at other times like we believed. The body only has major suffering and minor suffering. The mind only has major suffering and minor suffering. When we see things in reality like this, then we can release attachment. When we see things as they really are, then we become disenchanted, we release attachment and liberate.
Do we feel that we’re happy sometimes and unhappy at other times? If that’s how we feel, then we’re not a non-returner (Anagami) yet. We haven’t released the body. We still sense the body’s something that’s happy at times and suffering at other times. When we have these two choices, we choose to make it happy and avoid suffering. There’s craving or wanting for it to be happy and not suffering, for we don’t see the truth that this body is suffering itself. We only see major and minor suffering. We don’t see the truth. We see that the body has some happiness and some unhappiness. So there’s craving because there’s ignorance, or not understanding the truth, not knowing within suffering. So craving arises. Wanting the body to be happy and comfortable forever and not suffer.
See, not knowing that the body is suffering itself, that there’s only major or minor suffering, creates wanting. So ignorance causes craving to arise. Wanting lots of happiness for long periods-forever would be great! - and not wanting suffering. As soon as there’s wanting, then there’s struggle in the mind. The mind can’t be still anymore. It will move around according to the force of wanting. So when there’s craving, becoming, realms of existence are created. Becoming is the fabricating and struggle of the mind.
So let’s practice, and when we see the truth that the body is nothing other than suffering, and the mind is nothing other than suffering… We see the body first. The body is coarser, so it’s easier to see the truth of it than of the mind. So when we practice, we encounter the body first. When we see the body is nothing other than suffering, wanting the body to be happy won’t arise, and wanting the body to not suffer won’t arise. Once wanting doesn’t arise, then struggle won’t happen because that struggle, that becoming, won’t exist. With no becoming, there will be no birth.

The requirements for musical therapy are a bachelor's in psychology, then a masters in music therapy.

@@xiav3318 Hi! I know you may have figured something out in this last month, but I got my master's in music therapy in Canada. There are a few different programs across the country. For most( except for Concordia in Quebec), they offer bachelor degree programs in music therapy. If you have a degree that relates to a bachelor in music therapy (music or psychology), you can get a BMT in two years (as long as you have the required psychology courses). So for example, I did my bachelor's in music performance, if I went to Capilano Univeristy, I would be able to get a BMT in 2 years instead of 4 (time may vary as it all depends on each university). If you wanted a master's degree, only Wilfrid Laurier Univeristy and Concordia will let you get one if you do not have a Bachelor's in Music Therapy. I believe Capilano is the only other university that has a Master's Degree Program. Also watch out for U of Toronto, they only train people to become neurologic music therapists, but they can't do anything else ethically. NMT is valuable, but one can take the training in addition to a music therapy degrees for about $600 while being a student.
One last thing you should know, only those who have completed their master's at Wilfrid Laurier University can practice as music psychotherapists and they can only do this in Ontario as part of the CRPO. This means you may want to stay in Ontario for a very long time if you want to get your master's in music therapy in Ontario.

music listening (with a therapist) is one of the means of music therapy, more specifically, receptive music therapy. Listening to music on your own is itself therapeutic, but it doesn't make it music therapy per se. Not sure what you're down voting for.
