Sportster S First Ride Review

  • Harley Davidson has a sport bike and it's the Sportster S equipped with mid-controls. It's an exhilarating riding machine. It's not the sportster of old. That old EVO sportster and the S have nothing in common. Compare this bike to a Ducati Diavel, a Triumph Rocket III, a Yamaha MT10 for comparison. This week I take a Sportster S around the track at Daytona International Speedway for a quick thrashing of the gears. Have you ridden the Sportster S yet? Let me know what you think about the Sportster S rides and handles.

    At age 51 this is my first Harley (and motorcycle), and its worked out great. Only riding about 9 months.. Yes, used rain mode the first few months and liked the electronic 'helpers' to keep me safe. No complaints there. The stock exhaust is 'meh'... .But I heard a Jekyl&Hyde system at Sturgis and its definitely got some bark in there to uncork. I just want a non-switchable less pricey exhaust to come out... Its still a newer bike so the exhaust options are limited. And the looks are killer. I also ditched the rear scaffolding bumper for a nice underseat light and side plate.

      Nice. It’s good to see some customization options coming. May I ask if you kept the stock forward controls or not and your height?

    I was getting back into after years of hiatus. i'm a metric guy, but wasn't too happy with the modern "bug" bikes. Test rode a few Harleys, but wasn't impressed. Then I rode this one. It is a sport bike pretending to be a cruiser. I've put almost 10,000 miles on it in two years. Love it, here are my thoughts: THE BAD - It is a sport bike and has expensive sport bike tires. They wear out fast. ECU and display software on 21 and 22 models had lots of bugs, but they fixed most of them now; Battery didn't make it two years (yes, I kept it on a trickle charger); Fuel pump didn't make it two years. I'm hearing they've corrected most of these issues on newer models; Don't risk low octane in this high performance engine, it revs high and you'll risk damaging the valves. THE GOOD - Warrantee covered the glitches and my dealer was great; Optimal power and torque band is stupid-broad, she pulls hard all the way to about 7000 rpm! 6th gear is optional because you can get stupid fast in lower gears; Maneuverability is fine - the tires are fat but they are peaked sport tires, which allows them to cut a turn. Slow speed handling is fine, especially when properly counterbalancing. Its light, just under 500lbs; The ride comfort is fine, even with only 1.5" of suspension play, if you take 15 minutes to set the suspension to your weight; Price - for a "Harley", you get a lot stock for the price. Practically everything comes stock except heated grips, that includes ride modes, cruise, bluetooth, traction control, ABS, basic maps, etc. The display is excellent and works great in bright sunlight. Aftermarket is beginning to offer great customization options. Bottom line - Harley should be commended for this machine. Haters need to understand there is plenty of room for heritage to coexist with innovation in the product line.

      Thank you for sharing your experience with the Sportster S. I’m glad to know the bugs have been worked out. It’s not uncommon for the first couple years of a new model to be buggy, we’re over that hump in 2024.

    Hey Kenny. I love the bike. If you keep the RPM at 4000 and shift from that point you're hitting the peak HP/Torque band every shift. It's not your tradition Harley. This bike loves RPMs... Also I have the front foot pegs and yes it tough to stay on with the power this bike has..... I will post a video on my bike and the mods in couple of weeks and share it with you....

    yep and the weight is just right too if you're looking for a light bike to ride. Test rode 2 of them during sturgis last year and it's just sad how much hate it actually gets by those that haven't ridden one which would quite possibly change their mind. It's one of the contenders for my next bike.

      That’s a good point. The weight distribution is fantastic. Much like the Vrod this new approach is polarizing to the traditional Harley base.

    it sounds like a refrigerator. I maybe prefer the good old 883...

      Hands down my 883 sounds better with an exhaust. Originally it sounded like a sewing machine. The S needs to be uncorked too

      For me the S, Nightster and Panamerica are a caution buy until the electronics issues are sorted out, then once that’s confirmed add a couple years to be certain.

    This bike should come with mid controls but Im sure the old Harley heads would’ve been upset 🙄

    • @KennyQuestShow
      @KennyQuestShow  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It should, I agree. Tho’ the bike isn’t made for the old heads. HD calls it a cruiser. So Makes me think the Bronx will be marketed as their sport bike and come with proper mids.
