Tender bogies and lack of a headlamp aside, I love this model. 3801 was a big part of my childhood, and I got to sit in the fireman's seat during her Riverina visit back around 2006, right before her withdrawal and subsequent 13 year overhaul when she was wearing the memorial "Grey Nurse" paint scheme. This model from ARM was a blessing, as while it may not be the most detailed, it's been the most affordable C38 class model ever produced in recent times and has allowed me to finally have a 3801 model without the need to sell one of my kidneys. Since I don't currently have a space dedicated to a layout as I'm in a small rental, she'll have to wait for a good running session outside of volunteering at local clubs, but when I finally have the space she'll probably be my most frequently run model.
Just watched this one, a good and straight forward review without any river counting nonsense 😜 I have this same ARM 3801 as well, and it’s a fantastic value model for anyone just wanting an example of this famous loco compared to other offerings!
Nice review man. For $300 its not a bad model at all. I agree it would of been nice to have seen a head light installed from factory. Hopefully we might see some Victorian locos produced by them at that amazing $300 price!
Nice layout and myself I too like the 3801 - at the moment I am setting up an O gauge NSW Layout, already 3d printed out 30 S-wagons and 10 Sheep Wagons and also 3D printed out a 3801 tender which is painted as close as possible to the original, just the pin stripping is going to be a challenge. Well done Cheers
my Great Grandpa worked at Clyde engineering and worked on the C38s (3801 specifically) and we have a builders plate and rare photos of her. My grandpa was also on her whe nshe had her accident with an electric engine.
Like your headlight, weather the whistle is painted or not, is down to authenticity. Check out the one that is still running, to see weather it's painted or polished.

If you want do good reviews then take not of Sams Trains..
Sam does good work!
He runs his trains around on the floor, if he was any good there would at least be a layout 😂😂😂😂
