    The Return of 3801
3801 was built by Clyde Engineering and was the first of 30 C38 Class Locomotives.
It entered service in January 1943 and was withdrawn from service in December 1976.
In the years after, 3801 entered preservation.
In October 1988 the Flying Scotsman arrived from England and was paired with 3801 for a majority of its year long tour of Australia.
In 2007, 3801 was again withdrawn for overhaul.
After over a decade 3801 is finally ready to start testing and will soon start taking passengers on heritage tours.
This video shows 3801 under test at Chester Hill station.
The video also features other trains.

This is not the first time I’ve been given goosebumps by 3801. I was about 4 the first time I saw it at Lithgow passing on the mainline. It started A life long obsession about 3801. Thanks for posting phill. I’m really happy now. Can’t waist to put my annual leave form in and fly down to Sydney to see it pulling a train for myself. And to the one person who thumbed down go away we don’t like you.

    This is truly wonderful!
I thought that 3801 was off the rails forever.
It looks like it will be done in the express green, as it was also painted light grey and black during its working life.
Back in 1988 I was lucky enough to be invited onto the footplate by the engineman, and he gave me a personal tour of all the controls.
That was at Unanderra station and I still remember it fondly. Went up the top of Farnborough Rd many times, and watched 3801 and the Flying Scotsman double header up the Moss Vale line.

The reason for the huge delay since it was last seen is. When 3801 was withdrawn in 2007, it was decided to replace the original boiler with a new welded one as well as conducting various mechanical repairs. This was timetabled to be complete by the end of 2010. The contract for the construction of the new boiler was let to Dampflokwerk Meiningen in Germany, while the tender tank was transferred to the Hunter Valley Training Company at Maitland for repair.
In 2010, the new boiler arrived in Australia. Trial fitting of the boiler revealed a number of dimensional and technical issues which made it unsuitable for use. The boiler was subsequently returned to Germany in 2011. And the story goes on in search for a boiler.

    • @ChrisDunstall
      @ChrisDunstall 5 ปีที่แล้ว

When Transport Heritage NSW was formed in 2014, they brought the new boiler back to keep as a spare and sent the old rivetted boiler to Goulburn for repair. This was completed in 2018. The new boiler will be modified to Australian standards in the background. There were news articles on Transport Heritage NSW's website but anything prior to October 2018 seems to have been removed.

I first saw 3801 in service at Strathfield station in the early 1950's, as well as her class members, streamlined and not streamlined.
I later saw her at Kyogle in 1989 double heading with 4472 Flying Scotsman. Talking with the drivers of both engines as they stopped for water and a look around before hitting the Border Loop, 4472 was all piss and wind, whilst 3801 did all the work, explained by the huge 2.18 metre diameter wheels on 4472 - ideal for speed on the flattish East Coast Main line, but pretty useless for pulling power in Australia, whereas 3801 had 1.75 metre diameter wheels offering greater pulling power at the expense of torque. Horses for courses, I guess.
A relative worked on 3801, when in service, at Everleigh in the 1960's and he claimed it still had a fair turn of speed, they used to take them up between Hawkesbury River and Woy Woy and check their performance; he claimed a genuine 100 miles/hour on the flat, but not officially of course. Still it is a great engine and better for tour trains than the Garrett 6029, basically a freight engine.

Many having spent their whole working lives in the Railway Workshops, most starting as apprentices in boys town, 5 & 6 Bays, Eveleigh Loco Workshops And spending some time in their training in the Large Erecting Shop, where the 38 Class were repaired and overhauled. @@SydneyMetroVlogs strictly speaking the Newcastle is still open it just doesn't go as far as it did. I think the interchange is one of the ugliest excuses for a public building I have ever seen.
One of the greatest rail crimes in Newcastle is that many coal rail easements were still available until relatively recently. If the powers to be had any foresight they would have been retained for development of an off road light rail network. We seem to have an unhealthy obsession with rubber tyred transport instead of rail in this country which really annoys me.

I am not familiar with Chester Hill Station (don’t even know where it is) but clearly it has more trains than people.
As the 3801 still requires a visit to the paint shop, I assume that this excursion was purely to test work just completed. While it is wonderful that this museum piece is still able to run on the suburban rails, and it looks and sounds great, in light of the recent fires, thank goodness steam is no longer used because they would possibly start a lot of fires when it gets very dry with sparks from that firebox.

Sorry but bush fires are not a new phenomenon. I think you can rest assured that she was designed such that her chances of causing a bush fire were negligible.

David Berriman From the mid 19th century steam locomotives were fitted with spark arrestors to minimise the risk of fires generated by sparks, however, in particularly dry seasons fires caused by steam engines did occur. I haven’t been able to find any collated data on steam engine fires in general, however, there is quite a lot of Australian case law in which landowners sued the operators of railways. This includes both government owned rail, and private rail. I found 2 cases in 1884, 1 in each of 1902, 1904, 1907, and 1911, and 2 in 1948. In each case the fire started by the railway tracks after a train had passed. In one case the plaintiff suggested that the government had purchased poor quality coal that was more prone to creating sparks than good quality coal. From what I could see, there was about 2/3rds of cases where the railway lost and had a judgement against them. For every fire that resulted in litigation there would have been several more that were not litigated, some because of the difficulty of proving that the train started it, and others would have not gone to court due to the railway paying agreed compensation ahead of legal proceedings. The clustering of cases is strongly suggestive that the problem was greatest in times of drought.
As I said, it is a good thing, in the current extraordinarily dry and hot period, that we don’t have coal fired steam trains operating country services.

@@artistjoh Wow, thank you very much for that information. That is most interesting. I would have thought that back in the days of smokers being able to smoke whenever and wherever a butt out the window would be a more likely cause of fire. I am a smoker but I am very conscious of others when I am smoking.
I was aware of wood burners causing fires hence the strange structures on the funnels of those locomotives but I had not heard of such issues with coal burners. Again many thanks for enlightening me.

David Berriman I found 2 more cases filed in 1884. In one of them (Quinn v Commisioner of Railways, NSW Supreme Court, 1885) the plaintiff lost because the Railway was able to establish that the locomotive was fitted with the latest “scientific” spark arrestor and therefore, while it was proven that the train caused the fire, there was no negligence on the part of the Railway. The verdict was overturned on appeal on the basis that the jury had reached a verdict inconsistent with the law as explained to the jury by the judge and contrary to all of the evidence presented. There was another case filed that year (Cook v Commissioner of Railways, NSW Supreme Court, 1886) in which the plaintiff sued for a fire from before the fitting of spark arrestors. He argued that since spark arrestors were required to help prevent fires, the Commissioner should have invented and installed the devices earlier. In that case it appears to have resulted in a mistrial because the judge was found to have incorrectly directed the jury that if the devices were needed it was indeed the Railway’s job to have used all scientific knowledge to prevent the sparks, therefore the fire. This was found to have gone beyond the requirements of the law.
There seem to have been some interesting cases. In all cases I have seen the fires are alleged to have been caused by the locomotive and not a smoker. The spark arrestors are at the smoke stack end, but I would have thought that the firebox door would be a potential source of sparks when opened and if there is a method of poking the fire.

David Berriman The 1911 case is very interesting because it was about coal quality and the nature of the sparks it produces. It was in Western Australia (Andersson v Commissioner of Railways, WA Supreme Court, 1911). In that case it was established that the coal normally used was Newcastle coal, but supplies were running low so the government purchased “collie” coal which was known to produce both more sparks, and finer sparks. There was no contest that the locomotive caused the fire. The plaintiff argued that there was negligence because there were finer mesh spark arrestors suitable for that kind of coal available, but that the Commissioner had failed to install them. The Railway argued that to install the finer mesh spark arrestor would have meant taking the locomotive out of service for a day and that would have disrupted scheduled services so it was impossible to have fitted the device. The magistrate directed the jury that the Railway should have foreseen the need for the finer mesh well in advance and done the installation at an earlier time when schedules would not be interrupted. The plaintiff won.

    • @AussieRail

That grey is just primer. It hasn't been repainted yet. I heard years ago they were going to replace the Green Livery with the original "Wartime Grey" (Aka "Grey Nurse" livery) when the restoration was complete. I certainly hope that's not still the plan. - It was grey on delivery, painted green after the war, and then black in the 1950s. In the 60s' heritage groups successfully lobbied to have 3801 and 3830 restored to green, and it has been that way ever since, and should remain that way, IMHO.
