That was when entertainment shows were actually about entertaining the audience and making us happy. Now there is a political agenda generating hate. So sad.
1930s "pre-Code" comedy was better, funnier, and more human, before censorship by moralizing blowhards came in, trying to preserve "decency" at the cost of humor. Jack Benny is fantastic, and of course got his start in radio much earlier than the 1950s, but 90% of 1950s "clean comedy" was soulless and forgettable. Be careful what you wish for, when you wish for censorship
@@CommonContentArchive Some great classics came from the Production Code era. Not all of them were entirely "clean" or "decent", but they were still generally safe for most audiences. A few theatrical releases slipped in some risque humor that got past the censors, even some WB cartoons did this. Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe had some scenes that pushed the limits for that time too. Remember this was the era when almost everyone smoked and drank very openly, so it wasn't all pristine and goody-goody.
Considering that the Jack Benny Program was not in front of an audience and that Jack knew exactly how to time where the laughs would go, well it is even more amazing. Even I Love Lucy was done with an audience (somewhat to my surprise)

Most programming of this era was awful, but Jack Benny would've been hilarious in any era. Benny started in the early 1930s and was influenced by earlier humor, which is what gives his work the sense of humanity that it has. That's why we remember him, but forget 99% of everything else from the 1950s

Such teams as Andy Griffith/Don Knotts, Harvey Korman/Tim Conway to name a couple. But nobody could match Jack Benny/Mel Blanc for Mr. Benny's deadpan look and delivery and Mr. Blanc's different voices. I live in the UK. Only recently discovered these fantastic Jack Benny programmes on you tube. I remember watching Jack on tv, many years ago as a child. Mum and dad always watched him. I’m thrilled to be able to relive childhood memories. Seeing Mel Blanc in person, instead of just a name on the credits, now that’s a real bonus.
The English horse 🐎 was a joke by Jack and the staff and Mel came up with the British dialect to create the distinctive sounds. Pure gold these two guys . Live free or Die 🇺🇸.
We of my age (77) know how lucky we were growing up with the beginning of television and the history of what I just watched and so many more. We all got B&W movies from the beginning of that as standard fare.
There's another You Tube clip from almost 20 years later with Jack Benny and Mel Blanc with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Jack says the writers put the bit about an English horse in the script to play a joke on Mel. They thought he'd be stumped when he was asked to do an English horse. Instead, Mel said nothing and just went and did the English horse in the dress rehearsal as you see it here.
That was funny when Mr.Mel Blanc imitated the Saint Bernard, ending with a hiccup, and also the English horse😊.wado for putting this on here for other people to enjoy Good, Clean Family Comedy.wado,Ann Benson.

What an honor for Mel to have the comedian's comedian, Jack Benny, trying to stifle his laughter at his performance. Happened just about every time they interacted on the show. You can tell Jack loved working with Mel. Jack was the quintessential straight man whose expertise was making other people get laughs at his expense.

That was my thought watching this as well. "Stanley" comes out and he is getting laughs just by his very presence, before he ever uses his voice. That's talent, charisma, star power. RIP Mel and Jack
