Honestly session horns has been such a godsend - I find it's mostly the saxes that sound weak in it, and if you record even one of the instruments properly and use session horns to fill in the rest, the result is a tonne more natural :)
Wanted to say massive props for the videos dude, you've been a great help I don't know what your plans are for next ones or anything but a video on reggae fills would be amazing, there's next to nothing on youtube that gives a good overview of the concepts behind them, there's a couple drum ones that have a couple examples and explain how to play them but they don't really explain the general concept if you know what I mean? :3

@@DMKahn I liked how you illustrated the velocities, and the importance of the nuance, in making it sound more real. I learned music in high school band, and played with different sized gangs of horn players, in jazz bands, marching bands, pep rally bands. I was obsessed with drumming, so I hadn’t yet began to love horns, but I was paying attention best I could. So I understand how they sound up close, and you did a great job of getting it to the best it can be. I watched the horn video like a hawk!

I would maybe choose to use the lower octave trumpet but also the higher octave one for variations or progression of the horns in the song. Am I making sense? Love the sound of your finished brass section! And a solid sforzando/crescendo! So I like the first two sections and the crescendo best, the third part, just before the crescendo sounds fake to me. Maybe because of the note choice of that melody? Thank you for this tutorial Kahn!

Everything on this track sounds great! When you changed the internal tempo on the Kontakt Plugin, didn't that change it for everything on that track? Not just that 1 midi note?
I'm just looking through your videos now, but some ideas I had would be more videos on how to get the sounds you get on any of those instruments would be great: bass, guitar, drums, keys. This was super helpful in terms of talking about the midi parameters, EQ, saturation.
Maybe a deeper dive into 1 or 2 of those areas like compression or reverb on specific instruments? How do you set your project up....did you create a track stack with all your horns or something else? When you process the tracks, any reason you don't use the processing in the NI Kontakt...are their controls inferior in quality...? their built in reverbs, compression, etc.
Just thoughts! Anyway, great video! Thanks for sharing!!

I have a request could you do a Clavinet tutorial on how to create and mix it for reggae ? your mixing skills are impressive. Cheers.
I can try to help answer... I've had best results with the clav by just mimicking the bassline but making it a bit busier for flavor. And once in awhile treating it like a percussion instrument can sound neat. Mix it in the ~1.5K band, or whatever sounds good to your ears. I've heard the best clav samples on high-end Yamaha workstation keyboards, the samples make a huge difference with clavs'.
I was just about to request for a clavinet tutorial. Just yesterday I downloaded a free clavinet plugin called Ticky Clav. I have struggled to find a really good sounding Clav. The Ticky Clav seems to be working for now, but I need to know how to program it.

When people say things like "it doesn't sound real" -- it baffles me. They are real. The reason it doesn't "sound" real is down to programming. When you use a single articulation and no nuance, it won't sound real. For downbeat short notes, you could choose an actual marcato/staccato articulation to give it a proper attack and release sound vs. one that isn't meant for the particular sample being triggered. Programming MIDI horns isn't quick or easy when you want them to sound realistic. You're paying hundreds of dollars for a ton of fidelity and you're basically just using a tiny piece of it and then saying "it doesn't sound real". Come on. If you only ever played one pluck style on a guitar, would it sound real? No! You need up, down, strum, pick vs. finger, mutes, etc. For drums, you can't just bang away on one drum with one stick at one velocity and expect it to not sound robotic. You need to build in the human element. Fancy AI scripts will help, round robins, velocity layers... sure. But that's not all we do as horn players. So it shouldn't be all your virtual horns do either. This is touched on in this video, but I think it's fairly understated, and I hope people learn not to just stick to the most basic option, never programming in any nuance.

Hey Kahn, you should check out Audio Modling's SWAM instruments.
It's expensive physical modelling stuff but it really is lightyears ahead of sampled intruments. Really close to the real thing.

You have to turn on the internal BPM and also check “time stretch” in the plugin. Shouldn’t matter the DAW. Bless
@@DMKahn Yes but if i do a time Stretch on 100 BPM how can i do a longer note aftere that One, i mean if i set the internal BPM to 100 how can i set a different BPM for the second crescendo for example 90 bpm
Within the plugin you can set the tempo to 80bpm and the crescendo will be longer

What does a typical reggae horn section look like live? How many horns? Mic choice? Recording size?
The typical reggae horn session from what I have heard is a trumpet, an alto or tenor sax, and a trombone. Not sure on mic choices, depends on the instrument. I’ve seen large diaphragm condensers like u87s to dynamics like sm57s.
Many times it was who is available. For example I just did a song with a single trumpet that did about 5 layers. Sounded amazing

It depends on the song. I usually do trumpet on the root, sax on the third and trombone on the lower 5th. But I don’t know if that’s “the right” way to do it. I just play around until something sounds good

I disagree with your answer to the question: "How do you make good sounding horns for Reggae music without real horns?" You said "You can't..." but your answer should actually be "LIKE THIS..." because you just did it!! It sounds perfectly great, and let's not forget that in some song mixes the horns are even cooler if they are way back in the mix as opposed to being so up front. Even some old VI/rackmount horns from 20 years ago can do the job well if properly composed and mixed.

Hey man! Thanks a lot for this tutorial (and all of your turials!) . I've watched it a few times and just can't get a good sound happening. I'm using Session Horns (not the Pro) version. This does not allow for selecting and recording each instrument separately unfortunately. I've tried using the chord split mode and drawing the separate instruments on the 3rd and 5th but it sounds terrible - maybe I just don't my music theory well enough. The best I've been able to get is playing single notes and letting the plugin create the chords (again in chord split mode). It's really disappointing and disheartening. The demos on the NI page sound so good, I had high hopes! I also have the non pro version (I started with that one) but found it super frustrating. My advice is wait for the pro version to go on half price sale (usually happens yearly) and grab it. The pro version lets you record them all individually.

@@mysticrhythmmusic the best thing to do is chord split and do just 2 instruments. Like root third (say trombone trumpet) and fifth high octave (alto and another trumpet)

I am no hater but your production is limited and for one that is not from of a reggae background yes for someone like me that is elevated you need more variety in your production ....it's only dubb you do ...you do good for folks that are not new or not reggae producers
