      @@loganreads90 Rotten Tomatoes rates great movies as shit and terrible movies as amazing. After all, they somehow rated Godzilla 2014 as higher rated than King of The Monsters, the latter giving us Godzilla's theme, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, and had Godzilla kick ass, whereas the former didn't even have an hour of Godzilla and had some side content that had no big impact on the main event. What do Godzilla fans ask for? Godzilla, big monsters fights, and awesome. Humanity is an afterthought at best.
      But yeah, Rotten Tomatoes suck. If they actually cared, people would actually take them seriously. Huh, sounds like another company that rates things… it couldn't be related to something called IGN.

    • @MythicSuns
      @MythicSuns ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My view is that it's passable for a straight to VHS/DVD film but at the same time, for me at least, part of what made Bionicle work for me was the neutral designs of the characters; The Toa Mata and to some degree the Toa Nuva never really looked heroic and could've just as easily been the villians, but in the film the way they emote instantly informs you that they're the good guys. Same goes for the Matoran and the Turaga.
      Also, a lot of the promotional Bionicle stuff as well as various moments in the Mata Nui Online Game had a way of letting your imagination run wild whilst making sure not to tell you too much too quickly. One of my favourite moments which I also consider a brilliant example of visual interactive storytelling is finding the telescope in the Mata Nui Online Game before anyone tells you what it does; not only did the game designers give you everything you need to figure out what the telescope does but they also added in this beautiful yet haunting ambient music that plays when you approach it.
      Admittedly I need to give this film another watch as I've forgotten a lot of the dialogue but from what I remember from the other times I watched it I thought it was alright; nothing to write home about but nothing offensively bad either. Given that it was trying to play towards more mainstream audiences without offending the diehard fans I think it turned out alright.

      If I recall correctly, Bionicle _was_ starting to see diminishing sales and profits when the Glatorian/Mata Nui arc was released. I think there were also concerns regarding newcomers being able to really get into a story 10 years in the making, especially if a lot of the characters getting referenced in the stories don't have "modern" sets kids can easily get. Don't get me wrong, I wish they kept going because some of the story beats that were getting set up after Mata Nui's "retirement" were really interesting. I also wish we got a proper send-off range besides that wet-noodle Bionicle STARS wave, but I can see why LEGO thought it was time to wrap things up.

And that Jaller was literally scared to death. I’m trying to think of others but nothing is jumping out at me.

    Coming back to this movie after spending almost 20 years(!!!) in my memory. I used to watch this movie almost every day - back when I was nearly blind to the concept of media production - because I was such a huge fan of bionicle. Now I appreciate this movie for what it really is. I can look past the franchise and see a straight-forward and rock-solid script, killer CG animation for a children's movie from 2003(!!!), genuine and skillful voice acting that brings life and individuality into each character's admittedly-cliche archetypes, and a totally solid score that is high quality and compliments the atmosphere perfectly. But not only is the quality of the multimedia suite really high, as others have stated the lore is on-point. The terminology and story doesn't cut so much of a break towards the uninitiated that it leaves young bionicle fans deprived like a spec script with a bionicle veneer might have. From every angle, Mask of Light is a totally genuine product that still holds water when revisited as an adult, no nostalgia goggles required.

    Still a great movie. Call it nostalgia glasses, but I believe it.
    I always loved the spiritual aspect of Bionicle movies. If they weren’t mechanical, this would be like other fantasy stories. They are united by their duty to their creator and his world world, who guides them to meet their destiny. Even the Makuta realized that in the end.
