The reason Nas gets GOAT status is cause he covers all grounds of being a great MC better than anybody else. He's deeper. He's thoughtful. It's not cause of Hate Me Now or If I Ruled The World. It's cause of songs like Purple, Black Zombies, Black Girl Lost, One Love, Doo Rags, Daughters, you da man, what goes around..... he speaks to and for the people. He also stood up against the greats. Never backed down from Biggie, Jay, Pac, Prodigy, 50. He does internal rhyme schemes better than anybody and his stories are the most detailed and intricate. It's really not close. And he didn't sell his soul to do it either. He didn't dumb down his rhymes. And during the most attention he got on a major label, he dropped HHID and Untitled that questioned where hiphop was going and Untitled, about literally everything that is still going on in society today. He called out Fox News years before it became the problem it is today. But he was knocked for kicking knowledge. And That's not even going over the commercial success.

Here's my take: What exactly makes Jay-Z "great"? Commercial success? Besides Reasonable Doubt and the first Blueprint, what are his classic albums? 4:44 was a grown and really good piece of work. But that's all. Am I wrong to say that Jay Z has great songs but Nas has great albums? Am I wrong to think that Jay Z has the attention but Nas has more of substance? How exactly do we define what a "great" is? To me, NAS has always been a master lyricist. Jay Z is a great rapper who has an amazing flow and knows how to pair beat with rhyme. They're both legends but Nas to me is in a different class of his own.

Gostface Killa called Nas the Chosen 1 for a reason. Hiphop is based on lyrics, flow and the ability to tell stories. Jay got the flow, but lacks lyrics and story telling like Nas and Big. Jayz gives you that club banger and radio record - definitely the go to on that. However, when it comes to hiphop.. You would agree it’s deeper than just club songs (pop corn/bubble gum music) Hence why illmatic is still regarded as the Greatest Hiphop Record of all time. When you take Nas worst album and compare it with the worst albums of Jayz or other rappers. You will realise he's still better quality and has a timeless feel, & this’s because of the content & lyrics. On the flip side when you take the Best work of other rappers... 😂🤣 it can't be compared to what this Genius called Nasir ( Real Name Alert LOL) made as a teenager. 18/19! 😄 c’mon na❗️y’all need to stop 🛑 this Nas slander it’s blasphemy❗️

Holy shit you completely missed the point of hip hop is dead. He was referring to street guys getting into hip hop.
This was a big thing. 50 Cent was bankrolled by Kenneth Supreme Mcgriff, Nas himself had the backing of Harry O, other Rappers were backed up street kingpins like Azie Faison and the mob style crew, it was about the fact that the street guys didn’t care about the craft. They just wanted profit and were willing to do anything to get it.

"Biggie's Ready to Die album came out several months after Illmatic, and Biggie was crowned king of New York in the popular culture of Hip Hop heads, Ready to Die unfairly over-shadowed Illmatic, which is truly a classic album. Though they were quite distinct artists, they innovated in analogous ways. Biggie merged language that was high and low, vernacular and vocabulary words, in a way that sounded natural. He did this with a sophisticated understanding of the patterns of black language. When a different or unusual word or phrase could be introduced while still maintaining the aesthetics of black language, he inserted it.
NaS, in contrast, merged concepts that were high and low, vernacular and metaphysical, in a manner that was whole rather than pieced together, thus presenting a complex that is unusual in any music outside of jazz. What Biggie started to do with language in 1994, NaS had already begun to do with ideas on Illmatic. He carries us through the "Righteous steps" of the cosmic, oceanic, and literal dimensions of his person. He transcends." - Imany Perry (Born To Use Mics)

New York was so hungry to win back the crown from the west coast that they crowned Nas the king , then Biggie was better so they crowned him the king , then they crowned Jay the king.
Nas is a slightly better Guru. Nas has had a great career , but mostly nobody cared. Every one (esp New York) want to crown him the king , but no one pumps his music except hip hop heads ,
Plus go read his lyrics, make no sense, not street smart , not funny ,not witty ,not conscience, did not start trends , slang , nothing , no huge hits , no storytelling (rewind was cool) he is just good at everything but not great at anything.

Soulja Boi had a point but so did Nas. Nas didn't mean hip hop is literally dead. He meant it was dying because rappers at the time ('06) were becoming more focused on making money and the industry became more about mass commercialism (like ringtone rap era) than keeping the five elements alive: Emceeing(Lyricism), Breaking(Dancing), Deejaying(Producing), Beatboxing(Producing) and Graffiti (art). He wasn't the only one to feel that way either. Then came Wayne's run. Lil Wayne was the spark that kept it alive because he made rapping and lyricism cool again. And that's what made rappers want to be better rappers again.

Isn't that what's it's about? Dude has arguably the greatest hiphop album (illmatic) of all-time going back to 1994, dropped classics in between and just released 3 great albums in the last yr and a half which got him his first Grammy 30 years in the game! The closest one to Nas imo opinion was Jay-Z up until he dropped KD. And I personally think Jay should've responded with a project at that time to stay in the convo with Nas, but with these last 2 projects and the possibility of dropping kd3 it's pretty much impossible for Jay to crawl back into the convo.

Like Em said, there's a difference between the best rapper and your favourite rapper. Just because someone listen, say, to drake more than Tupac doesn't mean drake is better than Tupac. It just means that he is your favourite rapper, because anybody who listens to Tupac and drake would come the the conclusion that Tupac is far superior with regards to his music and impact and the fact that he could defend himself against, hell, the whole New York who produced the most lyrical rappers. Subjectively you might like drake, but objectively Tupac is greater.

Nas isn’t a personal fav to me either, but he’s never been overrated. Objectively he’s top 3 dead or alive. About Hip Hop Is Dead: People ignore the literal last song of the album, that says flat out “HIP HOP WILL NEVER NEVER NEVER DIE”. That album is underrated.

Dude loves Hip-Hop and Biz but doesn’t know that the “Nas! Nas!” Is actually a Biz quote from Nobody Beats The Biz, “highly recognized as the king of disco” which Premier scratched on “Nas is Like”

Just as a point towards Jay-Z, he definitely doesn't have the hunger, but 4:44 was probably the best hip-hop album that came out in 2017

It was one of the best of 2017. I definitely played Gibbs, Roc Marciano, Oddisee, Brother Ali, Ross (that was a classic album: Rather You Than Me), and Future. It was overall a dope year. You also had Rapsody, Kendrick, JID, Joey, etc.

Damn 2017 must have been weak af for that to be the best. I thought it was good but not the best.

@@Biggbobb Definitely not weak, I had 4EVA is a mighty long time near the top, and higher than DAMN, but I still think 4:44 beats it out even if I personally enjoy 4eva more

It does make a difference whether a rapper has lived what he raps about or not. It's exploition of Black trauma when rapping about drugs and murder. But if it's what a rappers involved in then it's just his life experience. That point wouldnt apply to Rakim, KRS One, Mc lyte and other greats that didn't push that narrative. It came with the golden era

...so Jay can never be better than him....record sales and popularity dont matter...
PS check out illmatic. If you like IWW you'll be taking to a much more significant and pure moment with that album. The perfect HH album.
