He sounds very professional and like he knows how to talk to the press. But I'll believe this movie is happening once I see they have completed production.
I definitely agree with you, Thor. It seems directors no longer view Star Wars as "top tier," and can get to a Star Wars project when they feel like it.
From my perspective it doesn't really matter what they say. Any Star Wars movie or show centered around Rey or the sequels might as well not exist as far as I am concerned.
Lip service and appeasement. That's all this is. The sequel trilogy doesn't even "respect the lore" and this movie will no doubt double down on it, and it and has been given an obvious mandate to follow that every other writer before this guy couldn't.

Honestly, yes. If someone wrote an unbelievable story about Rey that addressed all the flaws with her characterization to date (made her fail, struggle, be truly tested), and told a compelling narrative in its own right, that would matter.
Honestly, the fact that this guy is even answering questions about this movie is part of the problem. Lucasfilms and everyone they hire needs to SHUT UP about any project that’s not actively filming. They have gotten themselves into so much trouble talking about stuff that’s barely in development. The director’s line about being glad “the Star Wars galaxy is finally in the hands of a woman” sparked a firestorm 2 YEARS AGO about a movie that doesn’t even have a completed script and may never happen. Completely unnecessary; this studio can’t stop stepping on rakes.
If they wanna just avoid controversy, sure, and maybe that's just the better approach to take. Having involved creators share things like this can be part of a wise media campaign to not just build interest over time but to monitor reactions to each batch of information as helpful feedback. Weird thing to me, though, is that Disney just doesn't seem to respond in an intelligent way to fan feedback that would evidence this kind of approach to sharing such information during development. The drawback to Disney taking your approach is that we'll hear little next to nothing about a project until it's too late, then end up with another production that's mediocre at best.
@ I agree with you that this kinda of sharing COULD be part of a wise media campaign but time has clearly shown that not to be the case with LF as currently structured. I think what you’re describing could work if Disney cleaned house and started off fresh with a new studio head. James Gunn over at the new DC Studios is very active on social media both teasing new projects and shooting down rumors, and it’s working so far; there’s a great deal of excitement for the new Superman movie. But the sharing is only be received positively because WB hit the reset button and the current DC Studios hasn’t burned fans year after year.
There use to be a time where we got a trailer and a few interviews on talk shows and that’s it. Now people want to know everything before a movie even comes out.
I remember at last Star Wars Celebration, Tony Gilroy did seem very enthusiastic about Star Wars so I wouldn't be surprised if he did some more after Andor.
Yeah, I seem to remember that the original plan of like five seasons for _Andor_ was scrapped due to the time commitment required of the cast being overambitious, and that's fair though I love the concept, but hopefully this didn't mean that Tony Gilroy also wants to just leave _Star Wars_ after the show.
Its important to remember that they are not looking for someone who is just a "good writer" they are looking for someone who is a "good writer for Kathleen Kennedy". Sadly it feels like the more people seem to get Star Wars the less likely they are to get the green light from the higher ups at LucasFilm.
This is why apathy is the worst thing to set in for any fandom, nothing the IP holding does short of deleting everything they've done will ever bring back the old feeling of greatness.
7:59 This. Thank you. They’ve not been promoting talent that’s proven itself within the brand, they’re just throwing creatives at it to see what sticks, and it’s killing the story. There’s an entire batch of writers and directors that’s been working in either the animated shows or the Mandalorian. Why doesn’t Bryce Dallas Howard have her own project yet? Heck, Dave Filoni had proved his chops before Disney even bought Star Wars, and he’s trained at the feet of the master! What about some of the actors? Sam Witwer and Ashley Eckstein have a deep grasp of the lore. John Favreau has proven himself as well. I know Filoni’s been elevated, but they need to turn the whole thing over to the folks who love the story, not people who just want to inject their own ideas, or tickle nostalgia to make a buck.
Honestly, if it weren’t for KK and others still being in charge, that would be EXACTLY what I want to hear and MAYBE I’d have faith in that movie being good. But it’s just one writer. So still no faith.
I stand by my speculation that Disney’s only allowing Lucasfilm to hire writers, and they’re not happy with what was put forward. They know there’s people waiting to tear this movie to shreds, while bragging about staying home when it releases.
LucasFilm feels like that sitcom trope when someone just makes something up and hopes the rest of the group catches on. LF: Yeah, we’re making a movie. It’s about Rey. And…uh…Phil’s making it. Phil: I am? I mean…of course, I am! I’m making a movie. A Star Wars movie…about Rey. Yes. That is true.
Theres good writing and then there's good writing in spite of studio meddling/interference/limitations. Gilroy was very good at sidestepping whatever could've hindered his story, but it feels more herculean to do that for a single movie starring a prominent heroine.
I want to see Rey yelling at her padawans “Damn it! This was so easy for me! I just did Jedi mind tricks and lightsaber duels with NO practice! You guys suck!”
Another problem is that Kennedy is the one the drafts are going to, and she is has shown to be a poor lead of the franchise. Maybe the other writers stories would be great maybe not but as long as they have to get the green light from Kennedy then I will continue to question and doubt if it will be good movie and faithful to the lore.
You guys mention why they wont use some of the Andor and Skeleton Crew guys, Bryce Dallas-Howard as a director has directed some of the highest acclaimed episodes of the shows. Get her on as well!
Speaking of McDonald’s, that food franchise has a specific standard, today’s SW writers and directors should emulate the tone, pacing, editing, angles, and especially writing of course of Lucas and Kirshner. Stick with that standard that’s your forever template. Mood. Atmosphere. And what George always intended. It’s a galaxy far far away, if new movies feel like your watching their universe stay on pace with trends on earth you have a problem. P.S. I’ll write my own Star Wars at this point
At the rate things are going, do not be surprised if they drop this new writer. Its to the point that KK might as well write it herself with aid from a Ghost Writer and/or AI as well.
He sounds like a good candidate for a Star Wars project. Just a shame he's being taken on board for the sequels and not a more interesting time period like pre-TPM / Darth Plagueis era or another Andor-esque show
Forgetting whether or not this will translate to a great story, it is nice to hear someone who actually understands the philosophical underpinnings of George Lucas' work, its better than the Sequel trilogy which was clearly scared of alienating audiences with star wars' politics/philosophy
Hey Thor, I just thought of something. Maybe the reason why LucasFilm seems to hire creatives before getting script ideas is due to the exclusiveness and secrecy of Hollywood business. For original ideas, scripts are usually shopped around by agents and representatives to executives and producers. Whether the creator gets a green light or denial, the script says with the creator until it is sold. This is why we occasionally get news reports about creatives suing studios for stealing ideas that were allegedly submitted earlier. For major intellectual properties like Star Wars, maybe the studios hire creatives first because whatever scripts are drafted become immediately owned by the studios. If a studio fires the creative, then that person cannot sue if the studio uses the drafts or similar drafts in the future. What are your thoughts? 🤷
Speaking of how directors get hired in hollywood my favorite story is the pitch dor the sequel to Alien. James Cameron wrote down on a paper towel or something "Alein$" and slid it to the execs. Automatic green light.
How to write a Rey movie that respects the lore: Rey wakes up and says "I had the worst three-movie-length dream!" You say it's good to get rid of unsuitable writers, but don't forget who the person is that is deeming it unsuitable!
This sounds great, but I think I can speak for most of the jaded fans when I say, I'll believe it when I see it. Or better yet, I'll believe it when the fan reviews are overwhelmingly good.
@ Haha, no worries, man. ;) I've learned a couple of foreign languages myself but am *_much_* worse at them than you are in English, and using the right preposition is, for me, _one of the hardest things_ to remember. And yeah, rooftop screenings are pretty sweet.
There is, at this point, no possible way to respect the lore. If they started now, the new movie wouldn't line up with the other Disney properties. And, for those who still believe Disney's statements like this, when are you going to learn? How many times do these people have to say "We're going to respect the lore and characters" before you finally get it through they're head that they don't care about the lore, the characters, or the fans? This line of "respecting the lore" has been said since before Disney even acquired Star Wars from Lucas. Kathleen Kennedy promised George Lucas, to his face, that they would respect the lore. Ever since then, they've bounced between three statements for every product that's come out. Two before release, one after. Before release, it's always the same two talking points. "We love the characters and the story of Star Wars" and "Product will be diverse." After? "You're racist, sexist, and evil is you don't like it." Every. Single. Time. For near a decade now. If you believe anything these people say, you are a fool. That's not me being mean or throwing insults around. I mean you do not think for yourself, thus making you a fool. How many characters do they have to ruin or kill before you get it? How many terrible stories do they have to make before you stop watching? How many times do they have to be caught lying before you stop believing them? When real, fundamental change happens, THAT'S when you should MAYBE start listening to what they're saying again. But not a moment before.
I’ve been saying it since Mangold spoke up is that he doesn’t want to be chained by the current law because the current law sucks and his broken. what about the possibility that he wants to write Star Wars without being chained to skywalkers?
It doesnt matter what they say, lets see what they DO. they SAY theres liek 10 movies in development ove rthe last like 6 years but where are they?? they say a lot but they dont DO.
I always though an interesting take for Star Wars would've been something that has happened in history numerous times and even to a degree in modern day. Where there was major political upheaval/war only a short time ago (a couple of generations) and a new generation doesn't learn/understand/grasp it. The sequels could have contained a movement amongst galaxy civilians whereby there was mass support for the rebuilding of the empire thinking that society was organised/better under it. Similar to how there are sentiments today towards communism without fully understanding the brutal reality of soviet russia and seemingly naively saying that they just didn't do it properly. BTW i'm not criticizing anyone who is a socialist (you're entitled to your views) and know that modern disney/hollywood would never go for a story line that. Just putting it out there.
Like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Rey just doesn’t work. She’s not popular, she’s associated with an unpopular series, she’s a girl boss who can do no wrong, but disney is just going to just keep trying to force this thing despite it all. But that’s par for the course with this company.
He may have great ideas and say the right things...but as a writer he and his vision will quickly stop being that when the director and Kathleen decide its not what they want.
There were stories that Disney might sacrifice Star Wars by selling it, and their genuine concern is saving the Marvel MCU. So, if Star Wars is for the chop, you may disguise that lousy news with rumours of new movies to save face and share value. Star Wars being sold on is unlikely to be met with resounding cheers by entertainment markets since Disney appears to have botched the once-golden franchise, and it's contaminated everything associated with the IP's name. Even Disney has become a byword for failure, a 'Shadow Empire' conspicuous for bloated budgets shot through with jaded political posturings. When the comedian becomes the joke of the act, it's time to get off stage and rethink a better winning formula.
《LORE WARS: Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow》 ~imo, the word "CANON" has become a JOKE~ ...Kathleen Kennedy discarded Han, Luke & Leia (aka "George Lucas's STAR WARS") in favor of Rey Skywalker (aka "The Force is Female: A STAR WARS Story")... ...& Kevin Feige discarded Iron Man, Hulk, Thor & Captain America (aka "The MCU") in favor of Ironheart, She-Hulk, Jane Foster & Captain Falcon (aka "The MSheU")... ...& James Gunn discarded Henry, Ben & Gal (aka "Zack Snyder's DCEU") in favor of Peacemaker (aka "The DCU")... ...Tearing Down the Foundation of "What Came Before" instead of using that Foundation to Build Something New upon it is the "Brave New World Order" of the day... ...i Agree that Current Studio Heads are Not Obligated to "Respect the Past" in Order to make New Content... ...but i Also Agree with Thor Skywalker (who has Said Something Similar) that as "Fans of the Franchises" we are also Not Obligated to Consume the New Product... ~also imo, there is a HUGE Difference between HATE & Indifference~ 👽 🖖 🤖 ~PS~ a note to Lisa Henson & Brian Henson: _A Very Muppet STAR WARS Movie_ _A Very Muppet AVENGERS Movie_ & _A Very Muppet PIXAR Movie_ ...would All be Awsome??? ...please & thank you Very Much!!! ✌🐸👍
Elevation is a movie that attempts to be smart but ends up meh. If they can do a movie that's "Andor lite" it could be fun. But the anti-Rey sentiment is a HUGE handicap.
They had Lindeloff hand in a script. Then they wanted him to rewrite the bantha poodoo out of it to make Rey into an ultra messiah. Clearly he bailed because the idea itself is trash! MTFBWY
You assume Darth Kathleen is good at hiring competent people and not that her underlings (or higher-ups) somehow convinced (maybe even tricked) her to give some good people chances.
It sounds great. But how would I not have trust issues that LF won’t tamper this talk and continue to push agendas over story? Override this guys thoughts / idea to make another feminist statement movie? It ain’t like they haven’t done it multiple times times. The lore is already jacked. Anything leads to a tie with the ST is no way to “restore” lore. The lore is messed up already.
Can't believe I'm writing this, but it IS possible for them to redeem Rey & make her a compelling character & also write a good story about the New Jedi Order. It's possible. This guy is making it sound like he gets "it." Whether or not he does, we'll see. I think everyone will be a lot less miserable if they just accept that the Sequels are sticking around & just deal with it. Would I prefer them to be decanonized? Of course, but I live in the reality that's it never going to happen.
Yeah, I agree. As much as I want the sequel trilogy to be de-canonized, it's at best a pipe dream (though something like what _X-Men: Days of Future Past_ did but with the World between Worlds seems like a barely plausible possibility). And yes, I do think really good writing can end Rey's stay in the franchise in at least a satisfying way. I actually wrote a summary for a Rey movie trilogy that could do this, but it involves all-out war with the Yuuzhan Vong. Conflict as epic as that arguably deserves a miniseries, though. Anyway, I shared it with Thor months ago, but he didn't respond to it, probably cuz it's so long for a TH-cam comment, haha.
@@6.H.0.5.7 the Yuuzhan Vong need to remain part of the decanonized EU, imo. I hated that whole storyline & the idea of them. I'm probably in the minority in that opinion. I did not enjoy the New Jedi Order book series. I hope we never see them or any copy of them in canon. No beings should be outside of the Force.
I really like his perspective, the historical connections and his view of Star Wars as a way to explore timeless themes of the human condition, of human civilization; the bit about the balance of order and chaos over time was particularly intriguing. That said, he's one man -- one man facing a whole institution that is thoroughly infested by activists and incompetents. Even if he manages to not get fired by Kennedy for not being a yes-man, he is unlikely to overcome the massive pressure and interference from the various execs and egotistic peers. The effects of his tenure will be nominal, and I hope he doesn't let it bother him too much because he seems a good sort, at least in regard to his creative impulses.
He sounds very professional and like he knows how to talk to the press. But I'll believe this movie is happening once I see they have completed production.

Lip service and appeasement. That's all this is. The sequel trilogy doesn't even "respect the lore" and this movie will no doubt double down on it, and it and has been given an obvious mandate to follow that every other writer before this guy couldn't.
Anything connected to the ST immediately loses credibility with a sizable part of the fandom. The writer won’t change that.
He's saying all the right things, and because of that...I feel bad for him because a lot of people don't care about Rey or anything related to the sequels.
Unfortunately it is still about Rey, instead of following Luke having an academy, something anyone else with a brain cell would of done except Disney before killing him
Respecting the lore and making a Rey movie is a contradiction in terms.
Does it really matter who they have writing for a movie no one wants?
Facts
Honestly, yes. If someone wrote an unbelievable story about Rey that addressed all the flaws with her characterization to date (made her fail, struggle, be truly tested), and told a compelling narrative in its own right, that would matter.
Well, if they’re making it anyway, it may as well have whatever it can working towards its success.
You can't make a Rey movie and respect the lore. Her story, the sequels, breaks the lore.
It's an impossible task.

When the comedian becomes the joke of the act, it's time to get off stage and rethink a better winning formula.
What he is saying sounds great. But will that director work with him?
《LORE WARS: Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow》
~imo, the word "CANON" has become a JOKE~
...Kathleen Kennedy discarded Han, Luke & Leia (aka "George Lucas's STAR WARS") in favor of Rey Skywalker (aka "The Force is Female: A STAR WARS Story")...
...& Kevin Feige discarded Iron Man, Hulk, Thor & Captain America (aka "The MCU") in favor of Ironheart, She-Hulk, Jane Foster & Captain Falcon (aka "The MSheU")...
...& James Gunn discarded Henry, Ben & Gal (aka "Zack Snyder's DCEU") in favor of Peacemaker (aka "The DCU")...
...Tearing Down the Foundation of "What Came Before" instead of using that Foundation to Build Something New upon it is the "Brave New World Order" of the day...
...i Agree that Current Studio Heads are Not Obligated to "Respect the Past" in Order to make New Content...
...but i Also Agree with Thor Skywalker (who has Said Something Similar) that as "Fans of the Franchises" we are also Not Obligated to Consume the New Product...
~also imo, there is a HUGE Difference between HATE & Indifference~

~PS~ a note to Lisa Henson & Brian Henson:
_A Very Muppet STAR WARS Movie_
_A Very Muppet AVENGERS Movie_ &
_A Very Muppet PIXAR Movie_
...would All be Awsome???
...please & thank you Very Much!!!
MTFBWY
Groundhog Day...
"I have altered the script, pray I do not alter it any further."
This franchise is getting worse by the minute!
You assume Darth Kathleen is good at hiring competent people and not that her underlings (or higher-ups) somehow convinced (maybe even tricked) her to give some good people chances.
Too late to respect the lore
They already killed/ruined every main character of the original trilogy (except maybe Lando) so there's nothing left to respect
All hot air. Same overseers, same results. Good scripts don’t make it past testing a Disney. Just look at the cancelled Kenobi story
I don’t wanna get too political or anything but come on. We’re all thinking it.
2 weeks into Trump’s term and we’re getting quotes like this.
Rian Johnson and Abrams said good things too. Meaningless.
Pfff! How can you reapect the lore....when it is ALREADY violated😆
Rey is LITERALLY a walking violation of lore😂
@ Hey, fair, you might not even be in the minority, haha.
@@6.H.0.5.7 I like the Vong, but I'd prefer if Lucasfilm stopped recycling the EU if they're not going to continue it.
@@mudman619 shut up sequels never exist
Great News! Thanks to you both. You two Rock! 🤟🤩
Just temporary lip service until he leaves the project just like the rest.
I have no interest in this movie. Can we just move on from this disaster
Yeah no, guys save your money, vote with your wallet. Go watch Skeleton Crew and Andor, ignore this Rey slop.
It's never going to happen
I won’t be watching this movie regardless
They can say all they want, still aints watchin it!! 🥱
